Kate began reading romance in 1979 when she picked up a copy of Kathleen Woodiwiss's Ashes in the Wind. She read the book from cover to cover in one very long night and was immediately hooked on the genre.
The next morning, she was standing at the door to her local Waldenbooks and when they opened, she hurried inside and asked for everything else written by Woodiwiss. At the same time, she found wonderful books by Rosemary Rogers, Laurie McBain, and Jennifer Blake.
Nearly 10 years later, while working as an advertising copywriter, Kate decided to try writing a romance of her own. After a history of interesting jobs in teaching, retailing, advertising, and nonprofit work, she was determined to add romance author to that list.
After numerous failed attempts over three years, Kate decided to forget writing historical romance and turned to category romance. Six months later, her first story, A Vagabond Heart, was finished. A year later, Harlequin bought the book after Kate won the national 1992 Harlequin Temptation contest. The book was published in 1993 as Indecent Exposure.
Her dream of adding romance writer to her resume came true and in December of 1993 she turned off her alarm clock, shredded her pantyhose, and became a full-time writer.
Since then, Kate has written numerous books for Temptation, Weddings by DeWilde, Harlequin anthologies, Love and Laughter, and Duets. Her new Duet, Three Babies and a Bargain (July 2000) will be her 24th project for Harlequin and All Through the Night (August 2000), a Temptation Blaze, will mark her 25th.
Kate lives in southeastern Wisconsin in a cozy little house in a picturesque village. Two cats also live with her—Tansing, a grumpy Himalayan, and Tibriz, a tortie Persian mix that she rescued from an animal shelter. She enjoys gardening, golf, reading, and romantic movies.
Firefighter Dylan Quinn is a love 'em and leave 'em kind of guy, but seeing Meggie Flannigan again makes him reconsider his approach to women. Meggie has never forgotten Dylan, the childhood crush who broker her heart. Now that they have crossed paths again, Meggie seizes the opportunity ... for revenge.
Kate Hoffmann is skilled at putting a lot of information into a limited number of pages. Dylan and Meggie's story is well-paced with a solid backstory and an engaging romance. They have great chemistry and their banter is fun.
The only problem is the revenge trope, which is not a favorite of mine as it often entails annoying keeping secrets and silly misunderstanding issues. Thankfully, Hoffmann keeps these to a minimum and the story is light on the drama and angst.
Overall, a quick and cute read for a Friday evening at home.
Theme: Revenge, teen embarrassment, being real, acceptance, love
Characters: Fiona Quinn – Seamus Quinn – mother and father… mother loving, up until she disappeared – why did she disappear? Unhappy in Amerca? An affair? Sickness? Hmmmm Seamus schooled his boys to not trust women (through his Irish Quinn ancestor stories).. Unknown, yet familiar, woman – I’m guessing a sister or half sister to the boys… Conor runs into her outside the bar in the last book, Dylan buys her a drink in this book – and she disappears quickly – seeming nervous, watchful, and familiar… hmmm Dylan Quinn – 2nd son… charming, ladies’ man, fireman… when it was his turn to tell the famous Quinn stories to the younger sibilings, he always had the Quinns rescuing the fair maiden. Became a fireman to rescue fair maidens… Kinda at a point where he doesn’t think anyone knows the real him… Meggie Flanagan – in high school she had a terrible crush on Dylan, her brother’s friend… he was 2 years ahead of her… she had braces, and ponytails, and no breasts… and when she shanghaied her brother to ask Dylan to take her to the sophomore dance, her brother misinterpreted and asked Dylan to get a brother to take her… she had told everyone Dylan was taking her, and was quite embarrassed, especially when brother who took her was shorter than her… 13 years later, she’s rounded out, no more braces, an accounting degree, saved money, and is opening up a coffee shop with her best friend – a shop with an atmosphere inviting one to sit awhile, computers, music, poetry readings, etc. Lana Richards – Meggie’s college friend, fellow dreamer, and business partner – she’s very comfortable with men, and gives meggie love advice. Sean / Brian / Brendan / Liam / Conor & Olivia - Brothers and wife -
Summary: An electrical fire with one of the expensive expresso machines (where Meg and Lana are setting up) brings Dylan and the fire dept … and Dylan carries Meg out of the store, when she is trying to insist that the firemen don’t destroy her machine with their axes… and then they realize they know each other… Dylan had many dinners over at her house, when he was hanging out with her brother… and Meg still remembers he was the cause of the worst day of her life… So with Lana’s encouragement and plan, Meg is going to play hard to get, then dump Dylan when he’s in love… Lana does this so that Meg has a way to overcome her shyness and insecurity – believing that there is a good chance both will fall in love… and Meg doesn’t follow too much of plan – allowing kisses on the first date, and sex on the 2nd… it’s sweet that after they make love, Dylan knows he will never make love to another woman – A bit of a hiccup when Meg wonders if it’s the plan or her that Dylan is responding to… and Dylan finds a printout of the plan and wonders how much Meg is playing him… their actions show the love and caring… just not the words and gifts of understanding/explaining… But Dylan’s brothers encourage him to follow his heart, and put it out on the line – and so he decides to go back and start over… sending over her sophomore dance pink dress (that mom dug out and looks so much better on her now that she’s filled out) and arranging to rent the gym with music… and he wears a tacky burgundy tuxedo… brings a corsage… and asks her to go steady (with his class ring) and then gives her an engagement ring – telling her to hold onto it until she’s ready – and when they attend Conor and Olivia’s wedding… she decides the time is right… ahhhh Memorable scenes:

The Mighty Quinns: Dylan by Kate Hoffmann was a good book. The second in The Mighty Quinns series. None of the Quinns believe they would ever fall in love because of stories their father told them about women. Dylan is a firefighter. He carries Meggie Flanagan out of her coffee restaurant when a fire is in one of the coffee machines. From there it's a hot relationship between the two. A good read
In the second book of the Mighty Quinn series Dylan the firefighter discovers you can go back and start all over. Love between him and Meggie makes the perfect end to this story in this enchanting family series. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to reading about the next Quinn to fall in love.
