Set in the late 1970s, a period of great personal freedom and exploitative working arrangements.
A young doctor, Richard starts his first job and immediately finds himself skating close to the edge of his competency. He is on an emergency call, when meets a young nurse giving first aid at the scene. It takes a while, but eventually he recognises that the much more worldly-wise nurse can do more for him than just pass him a scalpel, mop his brow and say "Well done Doctor, you saved his life ..."
Thus begins a journey that will test not only the brakes of a 1973 Austin Maxi but the strength of their relationship as Richard gets close to the edge of his skills and mental stamina.
I was born in London in 1956 and lived most of my life in the south of England, now I live in the sunny South of France.
For three fun-filled summers I ran a holiday resort for naturists in Portugal. Then I discovered what I really wanted to do., and retired. After spending two years searching Ted and Mrs Bun found L’Olivette, our little paradise in the South of France.
Teachers always tell you to write about things you know about. So, that is what I did!
During the long evenings of the darker season, a series of novellas and short stories started to take shape, one letter at a time
The first book in the Rags to Riches series, in which the central characters first meet and the romance starts, “The Uncovered Policeman” was published on Valentine’s Day 2016.
Richard has a plan - having reached that moment when specialized medical training is needed he has some time to fill. He takes on a role as a locum for the Accident and Emergency at a busy hospital. Immediately catapulted into long hours, crazy busy times making instant decisions and undertaking emergency surgeries. Encountering Sian, a nurse, a number of times in frenetic circumstances he can't quite recall the whole of, he finally gets up the gumption to meet for drinks. They spend time together, and their future takes a number of surprising turns that they work out between them.
In all of the twists and turns of the next few months, Richard's plan remains, but Sian makes a comment about life that keeps reappearing - that life is like a Breaking Wave, you are either carried by it or crushed by it.
So... every time the future seems certain, well, suddenly it isn't...
Loved these two characters warmly and richly fleshed out as they deal separately and together with the dramas of lives in the British Health sector.
Like his other tales, the author has done a nice job relating the story of two "regular" young medical people becoming a couple, dealing with the stresses of the profession, learning about each other. Initially a little tough going due to my having very little knowledge of the British medical system and terminology, but quickly drawn in. As usual, the author brings in the naturist lifestyle as just part of life.
In all, enjoyable start to another series, with a bit of a cliffhanger ending.
