Saucy calzones Shasta and Ulyssa have earned an honorary spot in the mafia with their wetwork, but the girls are ready to leave the crazy mob life behind and return to Nitro. They’ve got one foot out the door when a desperate Nicolo makes them an offer they can’t refuse.

A fat paycheck to take his daughter on a vacation far, far away from New Jersey.

Still skittish from their last job, the girls are reluctant to sign on until he promises - no killing required. They quickly learn that being assassins was a helluva lot easier than protecting the mobster’s spoiled teenage daughter, Princess.

Paranoia fueled situations keep the girls on their toes, but they’re caught flatfooted when attackers kidnap Princess and disappear without a trace.

The only thing worse than guarding Nicolo’s daughter...is losing her.

Not thrilled with the prospect of new designer concrete footwear, the girls scramble to find Princess and bring her home before anyone discovers she’s missing. Armed with plastic guns and southern charm, they set out on the most perilous adventure of their lives.

They may be the worst bodyguards in the world, but they’re planning the rescue mission of a lifetime.

While this was more action packed than book 1, it still has humor and the actions of the characters are more thought out and what happens to them less comedy of errors. This is not a bad thing by any means. This shows how well developed Fowler's style is becoming and that is a VERY good thing. Again, start a letter writing campaign to your local bookstore, stage a picket line, read in,something until they carry the books. Buy several copies, read one set, give the others as gifts so that others will stage their own protests so that we will have these books in EVERY STORE IN AMERICA! BWHHAAAA! Sorry, carried away there.

Seriously, read the damn things. You won't be sorry.

Fat Bodyguards by Marita Fowler is the follow-up novel to Fat Assassins, which I loved. At the end of the previous novel, Ulyssa and Shasta head to New Jersey to get their money the mob boss for a job well done. But the big boss isn’t done with them. He convinces our fat protagonists to take another job: accompany his teenage daughter and her friend on a cruise, which he’s booked for a birthday present. The bodyguards and their snobby rich charges all set off! The only warning: never get off to sight see if the ship stops in Mexico (cruises often make stops for a brief time so people can engage in activities on land). The mob boss has some stank in that region and doesn’t want his precious daughter to get kidnapped.

She and her friend get kidnapped. Of course they do! There wouldn’t be a story if they didn’t.

While Fat Bodyguards definitely has Fowler’s writing flavor in it, setting the story in Mexico cheats the reader out of all the magic made in Fat Assassins. It’s really the setting and secondary characters that made the first book so great. Staples of the first book, like Deputy Hodde, cousin Tater, Ulyssa’s Italian parents, and all the people who live out in the woods and partake in “don’t get caught season” and “tourist fishing,” gave Fowler’s protagonists something to respond to, and that something confirmed their identities, setting Shasta and Ulyssa apart from other action characters.

Without those amazing characters from Fat Assassins, the plot really needed to hold its own. While easy to read and follow, I discovered the story was action-driven and didn’t balance that with characterization. There are so many big moments that the plot is shaped more like a Nintendo game with mini bosses that lead to a big boss than a traditional story arc. That made it less engaging for me because my emotions weren’t built up through connection to the characters.

Finally, because I recently read a memoir set largely in Mexico, I have to comment on the way Fowler portrays the country. Unfortunately, the descriptions were largely cliche: tortillas, sombreros, tequila, ponchos, etc. Not that Fat Bodyguards should be compared to the memoir I read, but not once in 300+ pages did Reyna Grande mention any of the cliches Fowler used repeatedly. I think we all must be careful about how we represent other cultures so that the people depicted maintain their dignity and humanity, even in a comedic novel.

Though I wasn’t as impressed with Fat Bodyguards, I was happy to support Fowler’s work as she continues to write about fat women owning it. This novel didn’t write about size quite as much as the the first, but it was still present. I hope that when the 3rd novel is finished, Fowler gets her girls back to Nitro, West Virginia, and with the characters I grew to love.

This is another incredibly fun book from Marita Fowler. Shasta and Ulyssa are back to continue their accidental dominance of the criminal world. This time, they're tasked with protected a mob boss' daughter on a Caribbean cruise. Things don't necessarily go as planned, so what started out as babysitting quickly turned into a rescue mission.

This book has slightly less humor than the first (although there is still quite a bit), but there's more action and adventure. It's an incredibly quick and fun read. It does literally start exactly when the first book ended, and it does reference quite a few events from the first book without much explanation. Therefore, it's a good idea to make sure you're familiar with the first book before you begin.

Loved, loved, loved this book. These poor girls can get themselves into "BIG" trouble and then out of it. If you haven't read the first book of this series you need to. You will be laughing until you cry. I started reading at 8 pm and closed the book at 12:50 am. I could not put it down until I was done. Thats what I call a great book.

Okay this one wasn't as funny as the first. But I still found myself laughing. It was face paced to make up for the lack of humor in some parts. I loved it. Still think it would be a great movie or series or something. The ending though I hate cliff hangers. But I will be reading it when I can get my hands on it.

I love this series. Fast paced, hilarious and down to earth. The girls are new to the scene, but not bumbling idiots with no common since. They don't make excuses or try to change themselves for not being the "American standard" of beautiful they handle there own and still get the men and the job done. I can't wait for the next one!!!

Fat Bodyguards was as hilarious and fun as Fat Assassins, but with a cliff hanger leaving me wanting more. And just like Fat Assassins it's a quick and easy read, I tried taking my time reading it but it was hard to put down. Can't wait for Fat Spies!

I think it was better then the first book it is still hilarious and well worth taking the time to read. I can't wait for the third book.fat spies. my only complaint is we dont know what everyone is up to back at "home." it kinda leaves us in the dark about the previous characters.

Good follow-up to the Fat Assassins book, however, this book didn't have me laughing as hard.
Good story and very well written, I read it from start-to-finish in a few hours.

Funny! Laugh out loud and snort funny. Great characters that bumble their way through trouble in the South and Mexico. Read Fat Assassins first to understand all the characters.
