A difficult man to love but Leah does it well.

Leah is from England and has moved to the United States. She’s following her dreams and has taken a job with a top soccer team, but there is a catch. The job she has taken involves working directly with Radleigh. There is a reason this job was vacant. Mr McCoy is a difficult guy to get on with. He’s self-involved, arrogant and doesn’t understand how anyone can resist him. He is a pain in the head for Leah but she has her foot in the door and she’s willing to make it work. Mr McCoy just wants to get her into his bed. This is a hate to love relationship. It’s full of drama and disaster but turns into so much more.

Looking at the cover one would think cute fun sports romance, right? Wrong! More like romantic drama and a disappointment. Kyra Lennon is a new author to me and this bk evidently is the first in a series. I had no problems with the writing or editing, I even liked most of the characters, just had no love for the H/h.

The Hero, Radleigh, is the star soccer player for his team. This guy is such a womanizing, arrogant, conceded jerk that other than his roomie/buddy, there's no one on the team that can stand him. His soccer playing abilities and being the fans favorite are his only saving grace. One of the comments from a female side character is that she's sure he screams his own name during sex. (Endearing, right?) Because he's such a jerk and so confident in his position on the team, he's run off several people employed by the team. Not a pretty picture.

The heroine, Leah who I had high hopes for, is a feisty little (5'2") transplant from England who works as a physiotherapist for this American soccer team. She shuts down Radleigh's come on's at most every turn. Radleigh is more than disappointed that Leah doesn't fall for his bullying charm. So disappointed in fact that he reports her to the owner of the team for attitude hoping to get her in trouble. I want you, I can't have you so I'll get rid of you - such a prince of a guy, not only is the guy a jerk but an out and out liar as is demonstrated more than once in the story. Feeling the love for this Hero? Radleigh/Leah fight during the bk right up until the last few paragraphs. It's when the fighting starts to turn Leah's thoughts into "oh, but he's hot, I want him" I wanted to throw the bk.

Early on in the story Leah falls for Miguel, one of the coaches on the team, and they trade I love you's. Sweet guy and I was rooting for him the whole way. Needless to say, he gets screwed over by the little heroine because she has the hots for jerkface Radleigh. Unbelievable! Miguel is such the nice guy that he continues to be Leah's friend even after she cheats on him.

It was totally mindboggling by the end that the reader was supposed to believe that Radleigh/Leah would actually fall in love. Difficult because if they're not fighting there's not much of any bonding for the reader to form the opinion that they might actually have a future. Radleigh glares and ignores Leah a lot throughout the bk. One of the h's friends wonders "Leah, how can you care about someone who looks at you that way". Leah responds, "He doesn't mean it. It's what he does when he isn't' getting his way." A charmer huh? UGH!

Lots of drama sandwiched in between all my eye rolling. Here's another unbelievable situation, Will and Freya part of Leah's posse are actually in love with each other but acting just as friends because neither is aware of the fact that the other feels the same way. When Leah actually leaks this info to Will and he agrees he loves Freya he's just not sure when he'll have the nerve to tell her. WTH!?!?!?! It's a done deal, the guy's already won and he's STILL hesitant. Was this an eye rolling moment? Uh, YEA!

Not sure who will star in bk 2 of this series, I know I wish it would be poor sweet cheated on Miguel who certainly needs to find love by someone worthy. This is one of those bks that's a head scratcher wondering how others gave it such great reviews that convinced me to actually buy this bk. I just wish the author had written a story with a loveable hero/heroine, ones that you want to cheer on and are happy by the end of the book that they found each other.

Writing/Editing - 4 stars.
Story - 3 stars.
Hero/heroine - 1 star.
Side characters - 3 stars.
Overall rating = 2 stars.

Compelling Love-Hate Relationship

I love sport romances, and Game On by Kyra Lennon is one of the best. I met characters Leah Walker and Radleigh McCoy during the A to Z Blog Challenge, when Kyra posted vignettes written by them. Then I was intrigued, and now I'm happy I know these characters better.

Leah is a physiotherapist who has fled her past of bar hopping and one night stands in small town England to accept an exciting job with a Major League Soccer team in Los Angeles.

The best player on the team, Radleigh, is a womanizing cad. He really irritates Leah (hmm, is this hate-hate or love-hate?) and she's one of the only people who dishes it right back to him.

"Your dad was a soccer player too, right?" I asked.
"Yeah, and my grandfather too. One day I'd like to have a son following in my footsteps."
"After all the woman you've slept with, you might already have a whole soccer team you don't even know about."

Ouch! One thing I like about this story is that Kyra never leaves the characters stewing for long with conflict or misunderstanding. Here Leah takes a small step toward detente with her unplanned confession:

"A quickie in some groupie's hotel room might satisfy you," I snapped, "but that's not my thing."
"How do you know if you've never tried it?"
"I have! It made me feel cheap and dirty, and that's why I don't do it anymore!"
He stared at me in surprise. He'd been trying to get under my skin, he hadn't expected me to confess the sins of my past.

Leah is quite a likable character due to her spunk and humor. I cracked up when she has this conversation with her bff Freya:

"Was I even right?" she asked, dryly.
"About what?"
"Did he call out his own name when he reached orgasm?"

Leah starts dating one of the coaches, Miguel, who's kind and handsome. But she never really stops thinking about Radleigh. When Radleigh suffers a bad concussion, Leah feels strangely worried about him.

This was a fun and playful romance until Radleigh shows a deep perception of who Leah really is, increasing the emotional intensity of the story.

"I've seen it a thousand times before and you're no exception, Leah. You're feisty, and independent. I'm sure Miguel was very nice and all, but he wasn't right for you. You need someone who challenges and excites you."

At this point Leah (and the reader) start to see Radleigh in a different light, and I was fascinated by the development of his character (Leah's too).

The chapter titles were fun, like "Chapter 6: There's a Teenager Inside Every Man"...amen! I did notice a few inaccuracies, like calling the team's athletic trainers "medics" (I'm guessing that's what they're called in England?) and a little confusion about flying across time zones in America, but these were very minor.

This was an excellent read and I'm hoping this will start a series exploring some of the side romances in this novel. Great job, Kyra!

I must have read this book at least 50 times, as I critiqued it for Kyra, and it hasn't lost it's magic. In fact, with each new read, I pick up on a detail I've missed, or find an new dimension to a character.

Leah is a compelling protagonist. Witty, friendly, genuine and most importantly flawed. It would be so easy to make her the perfect woman, but Kyra didn't, Leah is entirely human, believable and relatable.

Radleigh McCoy is the bad boy every woman wants to tame, but once you scratch the surface, you discover he's a deep guy full of human intricacies. Finding out what makes him tick is almost as intriguing as discovering if he and Leah get together or not.

Supporting Leah and Radleigh, are a background cast of wonderfully real secondary characters, all of whom could easily walk right into everyday life, and each add something special to the story.

Game On is a moving, emotional, very real contemporary romance filled with fun, friendship, laughter, and a look on the human condition. Discovering why these characters act the way they do is an incredible part of the journey.

There's twists and turns throughout that will leave you guessing where Leah and Radleigh will end up, but an ending that leaves you completely satisfied.

One of the best contemporary romances I've read in years, and a story I could read over and over again.

I really enjoyed this book. While I would not typically pick up a book in the category of chick lit, human relationships are fascinating to me and this story deals with some heavy emotions which feel very raw at times. Leah is an eminently likeable protagonist and the author draws us in to share in her conflicting feelings as she undergoes various trials and tribulations at the hands of her arch nemesis, star footballer Radleigh McCoy. Will they? Won't they? Well, I'm not going to give anything away but I will say that you're going to find it hard to tear yourself away. Lennon has a sparky and engaging voice and there are many one-liners that had me laughing out loud. A perfect holiday read!

Leah Walker leaves her miserable past behind her to find a new life in the U.S. She lands a fabulous job and gains some even better friends. She happier than she's ever been until the gorgeous Radleigh McCoy propositions her. He might be a big soccer star, but his ego is even bigger. Leah doesn't want any men like that in her life. She's determined to not let him get under her skin, but he manages to get in a lot further. When her happy world crashes down around her, Leah has to find the strength to face the truth within herself or let mistakes from her past come back to defeat her again.

GAME ON is a contemporary romance which isn't a genre I usually read, but Kyra Lennon won me over. It was a fun story that made me laugh out loud. The biggest draw of this novel for me is the characters. There's a cast of vivid personalities, and I feel I now have a new group of good friends in them. Leah is a smart and strong protagonist. She's stubborn and witty, a lot like many other heroines, but she has a past that is full of mistakes that I know several real women make. It was easy to sympathize with her and get pulled into her life. I was caught up in her whirlwind of emotions, feeling every heartache, embarrassment, and joy with her. Radleigh is the egotistical alpha male. And yet there's something about him that draws you to him. It's in the little details that Kyra adds in so well. The secondary characters - Jesse, Freya, Will, Bree, Bryce, Josh, Christina - are just as memorable. I can't wait to see what Kyra has in store for them!

On top of the awesome characterization, there's great writing. Kyra makes it look easy to spin an engrossing tale of romance. Friends, family, and love. You'll find yourself quickly wrapped up in GAME ON, and you won't be able to put it down until you find out which team wins at the end.

A wonderful summer beach read!

Here's the rest of the review...

A fun summer beach read. Which I actually read on a beach. It took me a very long time to understand why Leah would ever be interested in Radleigh because he spends a lot of time being a real jerk. A major jerk. And while I love a bad boy, he didn’t seem to have a lot of redeeming qualities and it made me feel that much worse for poor loveable Miguel. I liked Radleigh a little better by the end. Overall, this book offers a great character voice with a nice combination of drama and laugh out loud moments. I will happily read the next book in the series.

This Book is so hard to review because on one side it was a good story, on the other side it could have been so much more.
The developments in this story were quite surprising but unfortunately it did not really Show us the developments between Leah and Radleigh. I wanted to see more of These two together. Additionally the ending was really abrupt. I wanted to have a real conversation, some more happy time of these two together
Nevertheless I enjoyed it more than I thought I would with some of the things going on. So 4 stars

Fun book that sucked me in right away. I had to keep reading to see if Radleigh would turn around :) It happened but not in the way I was expecting which was pretty cool. Really vibrant secondary characters. Loved them. And loved the closed door bedroom scenes (thank you, Kyra).

My only complaint were the f-words. They pull me out of the story every time--like getting doused with ice water. But I hope you know I still love you, Kyra :)

I loved Game On. Lennon's writing is funny, fresh and an absolute pleasure to read. I found myself laughing out loud and smiling in so many different places, I lost count. I also lost track of time, while reading this on the beach! I didn't even realize I had been sitting there for hours, my skin burning in the sun.

Check this book out if you love romance, hot soccer players and a good time.

I was lucky enough to get an early copy of Game On, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. It was gripping, emotional in parts and very funny. I particularly enjoyed Leah's witty thoughts and comments, and I'd take Radleigh McCoy over Christian Grey!

Some spoilers.

I have liked other books by this author, but I could not connect with this one. I just did not like Leah. I love fiesty heroines, but not when they come off as b****y.

I love banter. I love the MCs first hate each other, but you can still feel the chemistry. However, Leah was exhausting.

Radleigh, is the star soccer player for his team. He is a manwhore. I am fine with that in the story, but then Radleigh goes and report Leah because she does not like him?!?!? Seemed childish. Nonetheless, I never understood why Radleigh wanted the very moody Leah except that she kept saying "no" to him, I guess she was hot. I really don't know. Her attitude and behavior made her unattractive. I guess a manwhore overlooks things in women when he is horny. Maybe he covers his hear so he does not have to hear all her whining. This book just left me in a bad mood. I wanted a nice sports romance, but if I do not like the heroine, I can't connect.

The reader gets an explanation that Leah used to like to flirt and hook up, but it left her not feeling so great so she stopped doing that. I did not care about her history. Then while Radleigh was "pursuing" Leah, she starts a relationship with Miguel, one of the coaches on the team. That was it for me.

There is also a side story with Will and Freya. It all felt like too much.

This is my opinion. You may love this one. The author has written other good books. This one just did not work for me.

Story:
Leah is from the UK and has moved to the US to work as a physiotherapist for an LA-based soccer team. She's good at her job and focused on it, but she has one very exasperating distraction in Radleigh McCoy, a serial womaniser who is determined to "get" her simply, she believes, because he can't handle rejection from anyone, and she's got a serious habit of rejecting him. Radleigh drives her nuts, but she starts to realise it's not just 'cause he annoys her - it's 'cause she has a crush on him.

General thoughts:
This is my second Kyra Lennon read and I enjoyed it as much as the first. Radleigh McCoy is a great "bad boy" character, though of course he has a sweet side you only see very rare flashes of at first. I was greatly entertained by heroine Leah's feisty attitude, and it was lots of fun reading the scenes in which she and McCoy clashed. There were also a host of supporting characters who kept things interesting - either by being fun friends, very likeable characters, or troublemakers.

I love reading Kyra's books with the fun English slang, even if sometimes the "British"-isms are also Australianisms (in particular the word knob ;) ). Look forward to reading more of her stuff in future.

I really enjoyed this book!! Like many other reviewers, I wasn't sure I would ever like Radleigh, but he is very redeemable. And truthfully, I actually started to like him even more than Leah, whom I really liked from the get go. While he seems like such a jerk, ok a big jerk, I really actually understand him a lot more as the story goes on. And Leah is just a fiery, independent woman who isn't afraid to say exactly what she means. I think Leah and Radleigh are perfect for each other no matter how much they fight it. And really who wouldn't want a best friend like Freya and Bree. Bree is so bubbly and kinda ditzy but that totally makes her character great. So all in all a very good read. I really have no complaints with this one and the only reason I am not giving it a full on 5 stars is because while I throughly enjoyed it, I am not sure I will reread it again and again. But I will most definitely recommend it to all my friends. This one earns 4.5 AMAZEBALLS stars!!

When I started reading this, I didn't know how I was going to end up liking Radleigh McCoy by the end of the book. He's everything I normally despise in leading guys: arrogant, mildly obsessive, and short-tempered. In all, mostly a jerk. Yet somehow by the end, I wanted more. I wanted to know more about him, and I definitely wanted to see more of his relationship with Leah. I loved the relationships between all the characters, especially Leah and Freya and Leah and Jesse. The characters were all wonderfully complex, and I like that there are things we clearly don't know about all of them, even the main characters. I'm definitely looking forward to reading more set in this world.

Now this is a mature book for sure, but my goodness did it have a fun dynamic.

I met the characters via the author's blog, and I totally fell for them. They had such a fun dynamic that I couldn't wait to meet them in story. Let me just say, I didn't like Radleigh initially. In fact, I was right with Leah about wanting to smack, maim or otherwise hurt that jerk. And he deserved it. BUT knowing what I did about how he would change, I enjoyed the ride and sighed when things settled into place.

This was a great romance read that keeps you engrossed in conflict until the very end. Highly recommended.

Kyra did a great job with these characters.
At first I found Radleigh a womanising and arrogant jerk. But as the story grew and his love for Leah, was so blantantly obvious he grew on me.
This story is well written and I was lucky enough to be able to read the book as well as listen to the audiobook. So I was able to enjoy the written word along with the narrator.
I really loved it, and I will be reading book #2 as soon as I can.
I cannot wait to meet this author at a signing in July 2015.
Great job Kyra xx excellent work xx

This is a great book and a fantastic read - the story between the two main characters, Radleigh and Leah, is full of more twists and turns than the average romance, and keeps you guessing. There's a great supporting cast - who wouldn't love a best friend like Freya, or bubbly distraction like Bree?

It's a fun enjoyable book - great for rainy days when there's a box of chocolates and a glass of wine at your side.

This was the first book that I've read by Kyra Lennon, but I really enjoyed it.

You would think football stars and hot women would be the typical norm. This book was so much more than that. Leah and McCoy had this love/hate relationship going on. They wanted each other but they didn't want to admit it. They have this game of cat and mousse until their feelings for one another are real.

I look forward to seeing what happens in the next book.

This is the first book I've read by this author and I can't wait to read the rest of this series now! I hated Radleigh McCoy at the beginning of the book but that is the sign of a great author because by the time I was half way through the story I was rooting for him to win over Leah.

I'm a little addicted to sports romance stories at the minute and this one really didn't disappoint. Its a fab read.

Kyra is a new author to me, and I’d never read soccer or NA romance before either.
When I first met Radleigh I honestly wanted to slap him, he was such an ass. But as the story progressed and I came to the end, I loved him. Leah and he were more alike than either wanted to admit. The will they, won’t they had me on the edge of my seat, desperate to see them together.
Loved this book so much that I downloaded the rest of the series!

I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.

First off, I loved this book so much! I haven't read a book quite like this before and I don't think I will again. Kyra has such a wonderful writing style and technique that I could help but read the whole book in one session. Kyra made sure that the reader was engaged in the story and felt all the emotions each character felt. I loved Leah and Radleigh, especially the arguments.
The story was a beautiful plot of going from a hate relationship to a love one. Most of the time you hate someone for a reason that could be a reason they're Portraying and isn't the real them. Radleigh was a perfect example of this and I could help but love him whilst wanting to smack him. Being an athlete can come with a lot of stress, a big plot line but I'm not ruining it, and it can be hard to see the truth in all the fiction. Leah was that reality Radleigh was seeking and yet you couldn't help but be frustrated at his stubbornness. His backstory is stunning and there were times when I thought he was guilty and was proven wrong. (Thankfully)
Leah is a beautifully strong young woman who moved to LA to escape the past and ended up working as a physiotherapist to Raeleighs team. I loved the dynamic you got to view between Leah and her colleagues/friends, but also her relationship with all the members of the team. You can understand all the frustration you red about, as Radleigh seemed to treat her like an easy 'target', but oh how wrong he was. You get to know Leah and fall in love with her work attitude, her morals and her all round caring nature. As so would any man, Radleigh likes to push her buttons and get a rise out of her, but some of the scenes between them broke me heart as I couldn't help but think that they'd be perfect together.
This book just highlights how close love and hate are, but it's beautiful when you fall for the one person you think you hate.
This book is a must read, as it's a fantastic romance book with drama, heartbreak, family and secrets. Plus, sexy soccer men who seem to be true romantics at heart. The supporting characters were written amazingly and you can't help but want them in your own life.
Well done Kyra on such a lovely book.

I got this book in the morning, and I finished it before I went to bed that same day! Kyra's writing was captivating from the start, and the humorous moments felt genuine and left a smile on my face. The characters were well-developed, and the interactions between them felt real. As the drama unfolded between Leah and Radleigh, I had to keep reading so I could see how it all played out. The secondary characters were also engaging and likable, so there were no dull moments in this book. I also have to say that Jamie was one of the most adorable characters I've ever encountered. I wanted to hug him through the page! So cute!

There were some bumps and bruises along the way, and I ached for poor Miguel, but in the end, I felt satisfied. Life isn't always sunshine and roses, and it's good to read a book that doesn't gloss over that fact while also offering hope that there can be second chances. I'm also a fan of falling in love while fighting, so that aspect of things naturally appealed to me.

Overall, this is a fun read filled with wonderful character moments and fun writing! It's definitely worth your time.
