Actually, I never read the whole thing.... I was disgusted that my father would write such nonsense and I wanted nothing to do with it (I was about 16). But I googled it one day several months ago and discovered a couple of people had left reviews which I thought were very interesting. One fellow focused on the psychological state of my father while he was writing this book - something I had never really considered.... considering we don't realize our parents are people too, until they're old and start telling telling their stories, and then you can't get enough of them....
He didn't like the book cover.... it wasn't his choice - that's about all I know.
This book is about contemporary Christian music, and why it was/is a bad idea. I read it as a young person and agree with much more of the author's points now than I did then. Although a great many churches have already caved to the "contemporary format", a lot of the information in this book is still relevant. And, yes, the author does answer (and quite well) the age-old arguments in favor of "Christian rock" including: "Luther, Wesley, and other hymn writers all used drinking songs as the basis for many of their hymns" (they didn't); "See how many young people are coming to the Lord as the result of listening to gospel rock" (they truly aren't); and "You'll never reach unsaved young people with traditional church music" (The New Testament does not teach that music is a tool for evangelism. That is one of the functions of preaching; see Romans 10:14). Even though this book was published in 1981, if your church leadership is considering adopting or including "contemporary music" into their services, you might benefit from the information in this book, along with WHY I LEFT THE CONTEMPORARY CHRISTIAN MUSIC MOVEMENT (2002) by Dan Lucarini (see my review).
It's very much outdated, and I expected that but read it anyway. I didn't love his writing style, and he felt too legalistic sometimes. But he did have some solid points, valid warnings, and vital reminders.
This book was ridiculous. I actually got it on a whim because I thought it was going to be this hilarious account of how rock and roll was ruining the youth of America.
But no. It was about how CONTEMPORARY CHRISTIAN music was corrupting Christians. How insane is that?
Also the arguments the author uses... also not very sound. All in all, it was just a waste of time.
