Ezinne is dismayed when her mistress presents her to Prince Emeka as a concubine to cater for his every need for a few weeks. She’s a slave whose previous encounters with men make her fear their brutality.
Yet the more she gets to know the powerful yet honorable prince, the easier he breaks down the walls around her heart. She soon comes to want him more than she wants anything else, even freedom.
But Emeka is the heir to the throne and Ezinne is a woman with secrets that threaten not just their budding relationship but a kingdom.
As a lover of romance novels, Kiru wanted to read stories about Africans falling in love. When she couldn’t find those books, she decided to write the stories she wanted to read.
Kiru writes sensual stories featuring African characters whether on the continent or in the Diaspora. When she's not writing you can find her either immersed in a good book or catching up with friends and family. She currently lives in the South of England with her husband and three children.
Kiru is a founding member of Romance Writers of West Africa. In 2011, her debut romance novella, His Treasure, won the Book of the Year at the Love Romances Café Awards. She is the 2015 Romance Writer of the Year at the Nigerian Writers Awards and 2017 Author of the Year at the Ufere Awards.
Admit it, historical romance in an African setting is rare, so I was very eager to get my hands on Kiru Taye’s books when I first heard about them.
His Princess is book 3 in the Men of Valor series by Kiru Taye. The hero of the book, Prince Emeka features in the first book and even with the one scene he appears in, he made enough of an impression that I was eager to read his story.
And he (read: the author) did not disappoint. From the first page, the reader is thrust into the world of pre-colonial Nigeria with vivid descriptions of tradition and culture, and men and women at a time when freedom as we know it now didn’t exist. What makes this story stand out for me as an African reader is the richness of historical setting that makes one both appreciate pre-colonial culture – and even for a moment wish for some aspects of those times to return to contemporary Africa.
I enjoyed the descriptives and the author’s choice of words, which I feel really root the story in its setting. I loved the hero, who in a land and time of male dominance, chose to be a man without reproach – a man worth losing one’s heart to.
The heroine, a slave/servant and handmaiden to the hero’s wife, is a girl with a difficult past shrouded in secrets, which bind her to her mistress and prevents her from ever gaining freedom. As each secret unfolds the heroine becomes even more lovable. What struck me most about the heroine is her combination of pliancy and defiance, which the author is able to balance well to create a well-rounded character.
More than that, I think the author created a platform for a potential book four in the series, which I personally can’t wait to see come out.
MY RECOMMENDATION If you like sweet romance, forbidden love, royalty, African culture and tradition, then you definitely need to check out this story.
His Princess was the longest of the series and in my opinion it was the – I won’t tell you, I’ll let you formulate your own opinion. This book was fantastic. Throughout it I kept wondering how the hero and heroine would end up together. When the major revelation came I said, “Hot holy crap” out loud because I didn’t see it coming. And then Ms. Taye brought forth more surprises and all I could do was shake my head at the awesomeness of the story she had woven. Just like the other stories in the Men of Valor series, I whole heartedly recommend this book.
I'm ENJOYING this author's VIVID imagination...once again I'm CAUGHT UP in the INTRIGUING suspense surrounding Prince Emeka, his wife Princess Nonye and her servant girl Ezinne...the UNEXPECTED and destined romance between Emeka and Ezinne is HEARTWARMING...but it all concludes ENTIRELY too soon...however I'm still EAGERLY anticipating the next book in this ENGAGING series!
