the back of the book reads a comment of some other faous person who says 'to read "Lex" is to be his friend' and that kinda sums it up. Even though being a girl, I too recognize the Lex story: not being the most popular jock of the school, being into music very much, being uncertain about life and what you want and fantasizing about stuff you want to do or have, but in the end find out your life is better with it. For me this book was a precious little gem and i really think it is a bit sad it doesn't get rater higher...

It was ok,a quick way read, that should maybe have just cut out the whole festival thing, because it was far more believable to read about the radio nerd, the exam anxiety, the school boy crush, yet highly unbelievable that there wasn't any more detail on the organising of a big festival.....same with Davey's mother and get funeral, it was treated as just another trip to pub.....

"Lex" feels like one long stream-of-consciousness, in a good way. He has big dreams, calls himself a narcissist, and can be a bit pretentious at times, but it's mostly to fit in. That's the thing about Lex; he wants to stand out, but he wants to fit in too and have people like him. And, honestly, who didn't feel like that at 17? It's a story grounded thoroughly in reality, and ends in reality.

Lex is a 17 year old boy from a small town in Ireland called Clifden. He lives like a normal 17-year old but he isn’t the person who likes sports. And if I say he doesn’t like I mean he really doesn’t like it. So he’s kinda a special teenager.

The book is set in the time where we live. He has his own radiostation in Clifden. People listen to it. Maybe because it’s only playable in Clifden. Lex has a lot of people around him, not his friends but people in the story.Lex wants to study in London but on the way there are more adventures.

The book is exactly letting you see that the problems some 17-year olds have aren’t strange. The book is all about adventure and they are zooming in on a teenager his life. It’s an adventure because he is going to organise the biggest music festival ever in Clifden. This way Clifden will never forget Lex.

Explaining the title of this book isn’t that hard. The title is Lex because the story is about a boy called Lex and no other person is close to having a main role.

To be fair. I think the book was very boring. You can split the book in 2 pieces. 1 piece about the first 80 pages and 1 about the rest of the book. Because after those 80 pages it is all about the festival. The first piece was kinda intresting. You are meeting Lex. You find out what his hobby’s are, you find out who his crush is and find out what he wants in the future. After that it’s all about the festival and you have a hard time to get through the book.

Unfortunately the book jacket promises rather more than the book itself delivers. A fairly standard coming of age story that is limited in the issues faced and nowhere near as humourous as it cl aims to be. For a young man growing up in Ireland today, he actually faces rather humdrum and inane set of circumstances; the plot (the failure to arrange a concert for his hometown before he leaves for University) is Ok but not much more before that. The narrator / protagonist doesn't come across as particularly insightful or likable, and given that the book is really all about him is problematic.

Perhaps suitable as a YA reader, where avoiding larger controversial topics is considered important but there are much better other options available.

I don’t think this is one of my favourite books. There just happens nothing. It’s not a book I would recommend to someone. I think it would be better if there would be adventure in the book. I mean, it’s nice to know something about someone, but it started to get boring for the last 100 pages. At the begin I thought it was just the introduction of the book, but it slowly started to look like a biography. If I would be aware of the topic and quantity of adventure of the book, I think I would have chosen to not read the book. If you like biographies, you’ll maybe like this book, but in my opinion, it’s too boring

I stopped reading at chapter 40 it was just WAY too boring, the main character is just so plain the plot is almost nonexistent and I just couldn't care enough to read the end

James Mylet ist 36 Jahre alt. Nach seinem Studium hatte er eine Reihe von Jobs, bei denen man regelmäßig versuchte, ihm seinen letzten Nerv zu rauben. An manchen Tagen ist dies gelungen, an manchen nicht. Love is on Air ist sein erster Roman.

Rezension:
Lex lebt in dem kleinen irischen Ort Clifden und betreibt dort seit einiger Zeit neben der Schule einen Piratensender. Er steht kurz vor seinen Abschlussprüfungen und möchte danach nach London gehen, um die renommierte London School of Economics zu besuchen und seinem kleinen Dorf zu entfliehen, wo jeder jeden kennt.

Bevor er sich jedoch nach London aufmacht, hat Lex noch einiges zu erledigen: Einerseits ist er seit Jahren in Michelle verliebt, die ein Jahr älter als er ist, und der er endlich näher kommen möchte, obwohl sie seit längerem mit Liam befreundet ist, den Lex nicht ausstehen kann. Andererseits organisiert Lex ein Musikfestival in Clifden, zu dem er auch seine von ihm angebetete Lieblingsband Toots & the Maytals verpflichten konnte. Ob ihm das alles gelingen wird?

Mich konnte Love is on Air leider wenig begeistern. Die Geschichte um den jungen Lex war mir in vielen Stellen einfach zu langweilig, es passiert bis zur Hälfte des Buches so gut wie gar nichts aufregendes. Man erfährt stattdessen, wie Lex' Alltag verläuft und welche Träume er hat, doch tritt Lex einfach nur auf der Stelle.

Erst zur Mitte hin wird es etwas interessanter, als das Musikfestival immer näher rückt und Lex sich sogar mit Michelle trifft. Trotz allem konnte mich der Roman dennoch nicht überzeugen, da er sich wie eine Alltagsgeschichte liest, in der einfach nicht viel passiert und der Protagonist irgendwie nie so richtig zu Potte kommt.

Ein bisschen aufgelockert wird die Erzählung durch die Einstreuung verschiedener Perspektiven, aus der Lex' Schwester und Bruder oder auch mal ein Freund von ihm berichten. Lex selbst blieb mir zu ungreifbar und uninteressant. Von seinen Träumen für die Zukunft zu erfahren, mag ja in Ordnung sein, aber diese wurden ständig alle paar Seiten wiederholt, ohne dass sich Lex in eine bestimmte Richtung fortbewegt.

Love is on Air kann ich als nettes Zwischendurch-Buch betiteln, leider nicht mehr. Einen 18-jährigen, der denn Sinn des Lebens und seine Zukunft noch sucht, hätte man durchaus spannender schildern können und somit kann ich James Mylets Buch leider nicht so richtig weiterempfehlen.

Fazit: Love is on Air ist leider nur ein Roman für zwischendurch, der mir auch nicht länger im Gedächtnis bleiben wird. Dafür war die Geschichte um Lex einfach zu uninteressant.

In der Kurzbeschreibung hört es sich so an, als wäre ‚Lex‘ ein weiteres Jugendbuch dass sich nur um einen Jungen dreht, der vor dem Ende seiner Schulzeit seine Jungfräulichkeit verlieren will um nicht als Loser auszuwandern. Das ist jedoch definitiv nicht der Fall und ich bin froh, dass ich das Buch gekauft habe!

Lex ist also 17 Jahre alt, schreibt gerade seine Abschlussprüfungen in einem verschlafenen Dorf. Nach dem Sommer will er nach London auswandern. Was Lex so besonders macht, ist sein Musikgeschmack. Er hat nämlich einen recht speziellen und aus Liebe zur Musik hat er in seinem Nest Clifden eine eigene Radiostation ins Leben gerufen, die er alleine von seinem Zimmer aus betreut. Neben automatischen Playlisten (während er in der Schule hockt) spielt er auch absolute Geheimtipps ab und will zum Ende des Sommers hin nicht nur die Frau seiner Träume rumkriegen sondern auch ein kleines Festival mit seiner Lieblingsband veranstalten, welches eben von Radio Clifden veranstaltet wird.

Man kann sich vorstellen, dass es da allerhand Probleme und Chaos gibt. Lex ist einfach liebenswürdig, wenn auch ein bisschen Ich-bezogen. Es geht in dem Buch wirklich nur um ihn, aber das kann man sich laut Titel schon denken und es macht wirklich Spaß ihn kennen zu lernen. Die Kapitel sind eigentlich nur aus seiner Sicht geschrieben, ab und an kommen aber kurz Familienmitglieder und Freunde zu Wort und sagen ein paar Sätze zu ihrem Sohn, Bruder oder Kumpel.

Womit wir bei den anderen Charakter wären. Lex‘ Familie besteht aus Mutter, Vater und noch zwei Kindern. Fiona und Sean sind die kleinen Geschwister. Sie sind eine mehr oder minder normale Familie, die mit einer hyperaktiven Tochter, einem viel zu schlauen Sohn und einem kleinen Raufbold zu kämpfen haben. Auch die Freunde von Lex (der übrigens eigentlich Alexander heißt) sind ziemlich witzig und sofort sympathisch.

Zum Englisch ist noch zu sagen: Es ist relativ einfach. Lex benutzt ein wenig Umgangssprache, aber da kommt man schnell rein. Normales Schulenglisch sollte für dieses Buch ausreichen!

Mehr möchte ich eigentlich nicht dazu sagen. Es gibt Höhen und Tiefen, man leidet und freut sich mit Lex, aber je mehr ich jetzt sage, desto mehr spoiler ich. Also belasse ich es bei folgendem Fazit:

Der Protagonist ist absolut herzlich und verständlich, ich hab meine Ängste während des Abiturs wieder erkannt. Auch die anderen Charakter sind ziemlich liebevoll und authentisch ausgearbeitet, genau wie der Rest der Geschichte. Alles wirkt so real und so zerbrechlich, dass man wirklich das Gefühl hat, die Geschichte von Lex ist nicht erfunden sondern einfach nieder geschrieben. Sehr empfehlenswert!

I read this book over a couple of days, and I really liked it! It was fun, sweet, and I loved the main character, Lex. This is for all of you people who have ever been seventeen.

I was a little bit disappointed in the ending though, and I never quite figured out what all the chapters written from his family's and friends' point of view was about. I wouldn't have minded them being left out, because I didn't really understand their purpose.

The book is basically just one long flow of thoughts, sometimes completely random but still very funny, and I really enjoyed reading about Lex and all his troubles. I will gladly recommend it. :)

It's a book about that period in life when everyone is growing and flies out from the "sweet home" nest. A story about a teenage boy, who has his dreams, fears and explores the big world around him. The world as seen by every teenager - exciting, and the point where you learn life lessons the hard way.

I found the narrative style of the book to be a bit difficult to read, it's more a dairy style, some other diary books I've read went quicker. But once you get used to it, it goes easier and you can emerge in the story.

I don’t like the book, but I don’t dislike it very much. I think it’s really a book for people who really like reading and who like stories without action. And when i read a book i really want it to have action in it, but this story is just really monotonous and uneventful. I don’t recommend it to people, because it is really monotonous and there are better books to read.
