-اگر او در خدمت جمهوری است، چه چیز او قابل سرزنش است؟
+من او را به خاطر این سرزنش میکنم که برای خدمت به جمهوری حکومت روحانیان یعنی ننگ آورترین رژیم را برگزیده است، رژیمی که باعث آبروریزی است و بشریت را خرد می کند.
- فکر میکنم درباره ی او اشتباه میکنی.
+من به کسی که روحش همیشه در دهانش است، از قدرت مطلق سود می جوید، نقش ستمگر عادل را ماهرانه ایفا میکند و به هر کاری که دست می زند ما را متقاعد می سازد که کار خلق است و خلق خود اوست، اعتماد ندارم....

نمایش نامه ای که به وقایع دوره ترور و وحشت در انقلاب فرانسه طی سالهای 1793~1794 و زندگی ماکسیمیلیان روبسپیر رهبر ژاکوبن ها و با نفوذترین فرد این دوره می پردازد
روبسپیر در خانواده ای تهیدست از طبقه سوم (رعیت) متولد و در رشته حقوق دانشگاه پاریس تحصیل نمود در جوانی تحت تاثیر نوشته های ژان ژاک روسو به انقلابیون پیوست و نماینده منطقه آراس در مجلس مشروطه گردید
رومن رولان در این کتاب روبسپیر را به عنوان نماینده واقعی طبقه رعیت و مردم ستم کشیده فرانسه و مخالف بورژوا و طبقه اشراف و قهرمان ملی فرانسه معرفی می کند که در نهایت به علت نقشه های دشمنان، همکاری دوستان و بی تفاوتی مردم اعدام می گردد

Robespierre by Romain Rolland
A very generous subject, but I am not altogether satisfied with (at least the adaptation of) the play…7 out of 10
Robespierre presents quite a few complicated issues for this reader.
As a leader of the French Revolution, we are expected to honor his legacy and be grateful for the progress brought to mankind.
Or maybe not…
As a cruel man with dictatorial tendencies, a negative mindset and suspicious nature- to say the least- he decapitated thousands, many innocent.
- The revolution devours its own children
Jacques Mallet du Pan has said that and it is probably true, since both Danton and Robespierre, together with other revolutionaries have been killed.
If I were to choose between Robespierre and Danton, I would not hesitate to vote for the latter, albeit I need more learning of the subject.
But whereas Danton is in my perspective a figure animated by a passion, with let’s say human characteristics, Robespierre appears to be the opposite.
Cold and calculated, Robespierre is the epitome of a tyrant, corrupted by power as soon as he has got a taste of it.
I could be dead wrong and the play by Romain Roland has another look at the French leader and it is a kind description.
If Robespierre were played by George Constantin, my view could probably have been very different, depending on what the giant actor could have chosen to portray.
Alas, the interpreter of the role was far from up to the task on one hand, but on the other the character is not someone I like.
- Would I have tea with Robespierre?
- Not really, no
- If on an island, or as the Last Man on Earth (a comedy series- so and so) I would have to socialize with anyone, even with Robespierre.
Why did they have to kill the king, Danton and so many innocents?
I guess one answer would be to look at this from their perspective, considering the times and the morals, values that were in place...
People will wonder years from now- why did people kill so many animals in the 20th, 21st centuries and it will appear barbaric.
But we do things now and always that seem so cruel with hindsight, for those who live in a later, more civilized age.
Revolution can be an ugly thing and I can say that from personal experience, as someone who is quoted in Newsweek on the subject.
We had our own revolution in 1989 and I took part in the events, enjoying the initial enthusiasm, running scared when there were shootings.
Like the French mother of all revolutions, ours gave birth to factions and ended up with innocent blood spilled on the streets.
Most important, after 26 years, there are people who still enjoy the spoils and the opportunity they got then to take the reins of power.
As a conclusion, I end as I started, not sure how to rate this play-
It is worthwhile and deals with such a generous important historical character and event.
On the other, I’d venture to say that Romain Roland is not an author with whom I share the same values.
After all, he called Stalin the greatest man of his time…
