Meh. Average “one person is aware of their feelings, the other is completely clueless” trope, with the one who is self aware trying desperately to get the unaware one to become aware.
One character is the one with one parent, who is trying her hardest to be reliable for her mother, causing her to get the attention and resentment of the inevitable rich, parents exist but not in this story, love interest.
Add in the fact that about half of the manga were two completely different stories to pad it out and I’m left shrugging and slightly annoyed.
2, trope filled and too fluffed up to me to enjoy, stars.

It's like reading a show in book form with nice characters, amazing graphics and a rom-com storyline. I had a good time reading this one (although, I have only finished the first three volumes in this series till now).
Since elementary school, Yanagi has been dogged by the quiet and gloomy Kujou, who beats him at everything at every turn. But now, finally, he’s figured out a way to take her down a peg - get her to fall in love with him, so he can just dump her. Which would be pretty evil on the face of it, except some games really don’t have any losers… right?
After all my recent griping about three volume manga series that can’t seem to figure themselves out, here I am being proven right by this first volume that has a complete and perfect story in three flipping chapters.
This is one of the best openings I’ve read in a while and I do not know where it will end up going, except it doesn’t technically need to go anywhere for me to be very happy with it. The tone and the style feel a bit older, but the writing is aces.
Kujou is the perfect foil for Yanagi, who has a very inflated sense of himself that she punctures brutally in elementary school simply by being honest (and accurate). She’s incredibly taciturn and doesn’t have much by way of emotions, she just kicks his butt constantly.
Their back and forth is very early 00s shojo, but it doesn’t feel dated. Partially this is because Yanagi has a pretty awful plan, but he’s about as threatening as Cobra Commander (kids, ask your parents). And his obsession with winning quickly starts going in a whole other direction, allegedly against his will (allegedly).
The three chapters hit memorable moments from elementary school, high school, and university respectively and also do some switching around between perspectives that helps sell it. This is simple, but with a depth that some multi-volume series don’t manage.
It kind of blew me away what a complete little package these chapters are, with the emotional breakthroughs and highs and lows and misunderstandings and everything else and the promise of more to come that makes for a delightful ending in and of itself.
I love their dynamic, the way they’re there for one another or realizing things at different times. It beggars belief that Kujou doesn’t get her own feelings and that Yanagi doesn’t do anything but mutter about his own, but whatever. Then again, Yanagi is pretty much ruined when his feelings completely scuttle his plan in roughly the first attempt.
Kujou is very focused on her mother and doing well for them both, and getting there under her own power, so not letting anything else into the frame makes a little sense. In that respect they both have a little too much pride for their own good. There’s nothing new here, but the speed and precision at which it knocks these story beats out while being funny, sweet, and delightful is just the quietest, biggest flex ever.
Of course, the mangaka is apparently known for bittersweet and tragic endings, so the last two stories go in some other directions to make up for the syrupy opener. The last one about the adopted kid with a crush on his deceased mom is fine (despite what that description would have you believe), but certainly the least remarkable.
The other story involves a pretty brutal case of two people who are in love with one another and their two friends who are complicating things. This one’s pretty good just because we rarely see a shojo with this much melancholic longing in it and, slight as it might be, it gets across the pain of unrequited feelings.
Man, those first three chapters though. Seriously. Is this really just going to continue being about them in university playing their titular last game? I am so here for that if that’s the case, just to see these two bouncing off one another again.
5 stars - yeah, the last two chapters are okay, they’re interesting bits at least. But man, I haven’t enjoyed three opening chapters of a manga like this in a long time - it just popped for me in the exact right way.
This book reminded me that sometimes it's important to give books a second try because I absolutely loved this!! I don't know if it was the timing when I first attempted to read it or what, but this story was funny, and I was surprised by how much I laughed!
Apparently, one of my newest discoveries of tropes I really like(??) is rivals-to-lovers and this one has it in spades! I think this trope is more engaging than an enemies-to-lovers because as someone who can be deeply competitive with my husband in games, I find that I REALLY relate to that in a love story when a character just wants to beat the person they are falling for.
However, this manga is different because the main perspective is from the hero, Yanagi! And boy, is he a hoot! He's got the looks, the smarts, and the money that make him very likable romantically and platonically, but he can't seem to get his rival to see him in any kind of way BUT as someone she just happens to run into often or talk to on the way home! LOL!
What I loved about their friendship is the fact it continues up to the point of COLLEGE! I didn't really think about it until a random side character mentioned how they're childhood friends, but it's totally true! Yanagi and Kujou have been "competing" (really it's only Yanagi though LOL) since elementary school and while he's wanted to dethrone her winning streak by getting first place in his grades, he gets this CRAZY idea that he should make her fall for him FIRST and then break her heart by rejecting her. Because then, and ONLY then, will he be the ultimate winner despite the uncountable amount of times she's beaten him at sports AND academics.
I honestly can't even with that premise because how in the world does that make him the winner and make up for all his losses?? Hahahaha! But regardless of how outlandish that sort of sounds, it makes for a super entertaining first volume!
I really liked Kujou despite that she was consistently considered/labeled gloomy and friendless. I don't think she is either personally. I think she just doesn't reflect much emotion and prefers to be alone. Since it was a scene at one point in this volume, I will say that she may not have a lot of money, but MAJOR respect for how she wouldn't let Yanagi buy things for her simply because he had the money. SHE wants to do it on her own and work hard so she can make her mom's life easier one day.
I also really appreciated and loved the moments when Yanagi sees into the emotional moments of Kujou's life where she DID express emotion because it was in those times that he realized how he felt about her and that maybe he's losing after all anyway. (Yanagi, you just need to accept defeat on this. LOL!) But what I mean by that is that she is working so hard not to get anyone's respect or appreciation like Yanagi is, but simply so she can be there for the person she cares about the most.
One more thing that I want to mention is that I super enjoyed seeing these characters in college! It was short in this volume (because brace yourself for a quarter of this volume having TWO one-shots at the end) but I am hoping and eagerly anticipating it will be in the next volume! Yanagi's final "declaration" of let's "play a game" was a fantastic way to end this volume and has me very excited for what's to come!
Overall, I didn't "click" with this story the first time I tried it, but this second time I absolutely had a blast reading it! I'm already pushing it up on my list of manga I MUST get that release because I predict it will have plenty of fun shenanigans that will continue to make this a very enjoyable reading experience!
Definitely recommend checking it out if you like humorous love stories with a main male character perspective!
That was difficult to read since my Japanese isn't near this level. I managed to finish it though despite having a hard time comprehending some passages. It was super cute though and is a shojo from boy's pov. I recommend!

This is one of my all time favorite mangas. I swear, the moment I started it, I loved it. No joke man, this was amazing. The story was enjoyable and just funny adorable, and although most people go for the the stories that are really sad or happy, I just liked this one for it's simpleness. He's rich, she's not. She cares about working hard in life and getting somewhere, and taking care of her mother. That does not leave much room for anything else. When Yanagi first meets her, he's at the top of everything, and likes it like that. So when she comes up and takes away his first place title, she also shows him what it's like to work hard for things. It's also pretty funny because it's obvious he likes her, but he's so used to getting everything(And most girls) that he just won't admit it. She's unattainable, because she doesn't care about dating. So whenever he gets rejected, it's really funny. Kujou's smart, or else she wouldn't get top scores in everything. But she just doesn't get most signals, she's pretty straight-forward, which can lead to problems. She's not the usual type Yanagi goes for, which is why he's so clueless as to how to approach her. I love their relationship, even with so many miscomunications, they are always there for each other. This is a cute manga that I, personally, just loved. If you're for more actiony/andventure type manga, this isn't for you.
I thoroughly enjoyed it! There’s an independent, smart female lead, Kujou, and then you have Yonagi, a rich kid that is mad that Kujou beats him at EVERYTHING in school. Kujou doesn’t have any friends but Yonagi gets all the girls’ attention except for Kujou. It just eats him up inside. It’s a notice me Senpai situation but it’s the male trying to capture the attention of the female. 😂 It’s really fun and endearing. I love the dynamic that is happening between these two. Even though Yonagi is trying to get her to fall for him in order to “win” I think he is in love with her already! I think this will be an adorable slow-burn romance.
The only thing I was disappointed by was that 2 short stories took up half the volume. I wanted to read more Last Game! I cannot wait to see where this revenge story takes us!
I truly can't tell whether I'm too old for this kind of story, Kaguya-sama Love is War ruined all rivals to lovers stories, or whether this story is just that boring.
I don't like either of the main characters, the pacing and flow are slower than molasses, and the story/drama is so cliched my face imploded from cringe.
I imagine if I was in middle school or high school I would have really enjoyed this, but this was unbelievably boring. I'll read the next volume just to give it a chance, but I'm not holding my breath.
Skimmed the first chapter like the big cheaty cheater I am. Basically biggest pro: the fella is the protagonist and thee gal is thee love interest. Biggest con: I'm not wild about the fellas cute and tiny appearance and the writing didn't grab me. But it seems like a decent manga so I'm marking it as read because I think other folks would like it and I want to put it on your radars. Plus I might give it a second shot one day.
Oh, happy day! I did a book swap with a friend and went in blind not knowing anything about this 3 chapter serialization and it was just pure kick-your-feet giddiness! Rich boy meets poor girl, but girl outdoes boy in everything and he can’t stand it. A cute case of he falls first made this so enjoyable and worth the read! ❤️❤️
At this point, I'm just re-reading the same mangas I've read when I was in college! I remember reading Last Game and enjoying it so i decided to have a re-read.
