Really 2.5, but conceded the extra half point because I could not stop reading this train wreck until it was over. This is the definition of PWP with WTF and it would have been a great great smutty manga, but as prose it leans more towards ridiculous with random moments of 'that actually made me laugh'.
This was really short and not all that satisfying, so I'm giving it 2.5 stars. It actually would have been better as a yaoi (art and all) than as a written story, in my opinion. It's not that I didn't like it for what it was, it just wasn't all that substantive. The characters had no depth because there wasn't enough time to give them such. The whole of the story is two young women color commentating on a Sexual Tetrathalon (one event for each year of university) between 3 schools, with the slightest of backstory for a few of the competitors, and a completely useless 'intro' with one of the female commentators on the phone with her grandmother just before heading to the games.
There were a couple of good points. The names of the universities were fun. (For example, I know the intent was to read "Henty University" as "hentai" and not "hen-tee".) The images of some of the competitors were nice, and it was a fun read for what it was. It just wasn't anything deeper than surface level, and not even titillating as a read.
The last 25% of the mobi file was a preview for a different story, too. That was ridiculous. Not many typos, but for a story that short, there shouldn't have been any.
This was a great little read. No non-con despite the tendency for Yaoi to head that way (there is one instance where it's implied, but actually turns out not to be)
Team Yaoi is an original, clever concept, told well. While it might have been great as a comic, there were just way too many characters, intricacies and scenes that I think it might have felt messy as a graphic novel. Instead, this is a great story, told like a sports commentary, through the POV of two "official commentators" who are girls. They kind of represent the huge female readership of Yaoi, IMO. Cheering on their favourite ships and ogling the men. ;)
The story itself was both clever, sexy and intriguing. There was A LOT of team drama, which was fun and gave a lot of character development, despite only seeing them through the eyes of the two girls. It's a solid 5* for me, for being able to deliver an entertaining read, a great new sport, and an original plot, while still giving each player a personality, despite the challenging POV. I would definitely read another Sex War story with the same or new players.
Read, as in I didn't finish it. It was a the Olympic sex version. The premise was a world where all the guys from different schools participated in these smutty sex driven competitions. I just couldn't finish it. It was just an excuse to write about sex. And it wasn't even that interesting on top of that. Plus, it involved some non-con. Total. Waste. of. Money. I don't see myself going back and finishing this.
I like my yaoi smutty, and this is just as smutty as I expected, yet it does have a good storyline behind all of the sport, sex and kink that's thrown into it. What can I say, I'm a sucker for most of what Yamila Abraham writes, and think there's still a whole bunch of stuff of hers I want to catch up with.
