Yoji's missed a semester of school due to his poor health, but now that he's back he can’t help but notice classmate Tetsuo’s piercing gaze. The boy’s hard-to-read expressions and seeming lack of emotions give Yoji the creeps. Yet, when Tetsuo suddenly touches his neck, feelings of unbridled lust well up inside of him! What’s behind these ever intensifying urges making Yoji writhe like a cat in heat whenever Tetsuo’s around? It's the manga version of the popular boys’ love game, sweet pool, complete with never-before-serialized pages! Don’t miss out on this dark and twisted tale of mystery!
While I found the story extremely confusing, I liked the art enough for it to be three stars total. Although I have to say that I always complain about the boys looking too young, but in this case the opposite is true - these guys do not look like high school students to me. But well, it doesn't exactly hurt to have hot men to look at, so.
This manga is based off of a PC Visual Novel game by the same name, and while it skims over some things and adds new scenes, it's still an amazing read. For being what it is (yaoi) it has a lot of story. I immediately fell in love with the characters all over again. It's worth the time to read.
I decided to read these because I love the VN (I think it has some of N+C's better writing filled with lots of suspense and oodles of body horror) and wanted background information. I thought it was nice that we got a little more information about the Free People/Liberated in this and a little more info on Youji's sister. I do think this is confusing if you haven't already played the VN. This was written for the fans of the VN, I don't think it would entice many who haven't played it.
Sweet Pool has an enticing, grimy, and nauseating premise, but the content itself falls short of greatness. While it offers a unique horror experience that distinguishes it from other Nitro+Chiral projects, many BLVN fans consider it the weakest in their lineup. The IP as a whole—including the game, stage adaptation, and especially the unfinished manga—struggles to fully reach its potential and never quite pushes the boundaries that their other projects like Dramatical Murder and Slow Damage successfully do. Given that this adaptation was never fully completed, it’s best read as an optional companion piece to the game rather than as a standalone venture into the universe. The artwork is true to the game’s artistic style, which I like, but the pacing feels off, and the story somehow becomes more confusing on the page than it is in the game.
Where to begin.... I hate to say it, but this time I found myself quite literally stumped; how do I write a review when the book I've just read is decidedly strange. I mean close encounters of the fifth kind strange. Sweet Pool Volume 1, written and drawn by Mayu Kurumazaki and Nitro+Chiral is without a doubt at first glance an interesting yaoi. The synopsis and somewhat attractive characters are a lure, but once you get past the lust, you'll soon discover Sweet Pool is a slow read with a plot that doesn't make much sense. Yoji Sakiyama returns to school after a long absence due to poor health. Once in class, he's reunited with a fellow classmate and friend Makoto. They talk then the morning assembly starts, and while the teacher brings everyone up-to-speed another student, Tetsuo Shironuma stares at Yoji, making him feel uncomfortable. The assembly ends and the pair pass one another, leaving the room. From that point on the plot transgresses into the realm of just plain freakin' strange. Yoji notices a weird smell, he meets another student, Zenya Okinaga who rambles on about nonsensical things, and he becomes almost delusional and starts to see what appears to be blood and blood clots. Then, Yoji finds himself attracted to Tetsuo in yet repulsed; he experiences uncontrolled sexual urges whenever the guy's around. By this point, you'll be scratching your head. Then you find out someone else is pulling the strings. A group of people—possible aliens or scientists—have done something to him, and call him the female host. Host of what exactly...who knows, but there is some type of alien life form inside his body, and that is why he finds himself sexually attracted to Tetsuo, who is also a host, but the male counterpart. From there the story goes on and on, leaving the reader baffled and asking a lot of questions. Even after reading Sweet Pool Volume 2 I'm no further ahead in understanding the plot. The characters are appealing, but the sex is gruesome and quite the turn off with the blood. Sweet Pool has the potential to be a decent yaoi, but that's it. I give it 2.5 stars for the art.
