Hidden Courage A short novel with adventure and suspense… Inspiration comes in many forms and for Jack, a single photo in a magazine becomes his life’s greatest inspiration. The photo is of an unknown mountain in the Andes Mountain range of South America. Striking, dangerous and beautiful, Jack is drawn to it. He makes up his mind that he must climb it.
The story follows Jack’s adventure, as he flies his own plane from New England to South America. Battling cold and exhaustion, Jack struggles though one crisis after another as he attempts to climb the rugged and dangerous mountain… Alone.
Christopher David Petersen (1963 – 20??). Born and raised in Connecticut. As a child, I was always daring and reckless. Never one to let common sense stand in the way of a great adventure, my bold feats of stupidity were legendary… Huckleberry Finn would have been proud.
“Surprisingly”, that same spirit carried over into adulthood, as I sought out entertainment that included: scuba diving; ski Mountaineering; mountain biking; Rock, Ice and Mountain climbing; flying planes; golf, motorcycles, the stock market and of course, experimentation with various alcoholic refreshments.
Later in life, writing became an extension of my deep desire to experience “new and exciting worlds”. I have written several books, but none have been published through any formal channels… I’ve heard the process is long, painful and laborious, the thought of which sickens me. My foray into e-publishing came after a friend suggested my works could fetch dollars instead of dust inside my sock drawer… a righteous observation. My recent publications are the result of this advice.
An Engineer by trade and Writer by passion, I have worked all over the U.S. and usually write in my spare time… that is when I’m not enjoying a bottle of Scotch and a quality cigar. I am a naturally long-winded individual, so writing is what happens when I can’t get anyone to listen to me anymore…
I love all kinds of genres but gravitate more towards suspense. There is nothing like the build up to a great climax… What a rush!
With my new discovery in self-publishing, I have become focused and more determined to produce far greater works. Further adventure/suspense novels are soon to be released.
Having read a number of Chris Pettersen’s books, including the superb Tear in Time, having spotted this story, I couldn’t resist reading it.
The author’s writing style is both accessible and engaging. Whilst up beat, the tension is there when you want it and he always makes you wonder about what is going to happen next.
The story of a young man in search of adventure, is one that is not uncommon. However, the author has made this one particularly engaging, by combining mountain climbing with aeronautics. There is a good deal of technical detail in this book that covers both the flying and climbing aspects of the story. Whilst I know something about flying light aircraft, I’m less knowledgeable of the technicalities of mountain climbing, so I was pleased with the descriptions of the techniques and equipment used, which were helpful without being tedious.
The story moves along well and this really is a book in three parts: the journey to the mountain, the climb and the return home. There are times when you are carried along with the hero as he battles to keep his plane in the air and also when he is climbing. The author successfully manages to convey the feeling of claustrophobia caused by flying in mountain passes and the heights of the glaciers.
If I have a criticism of this book, is that it ends at 65% with the rest of the volume being taken up by the first chapters of Tear in Time.
There were very few typographic errors in this book, always good to see from an Indie writer.
I wasn't certain what to expect from this book since it didn't sound like something I would normally pick up and read. I loved every word in it. I spent the entire time reading it worried sick. Christopher Petersen is an excellent writer. He makes you care about his characters. That takes real talent.
This was a really interesting read, the author certainly knows his subjects, in the case flying and climbing which are covered in great detail. I will certainly look forward to reading the sequel and find out what the shining object is!! A great first novel.
An easy read following the exploits of one boy on his travels. Quite refreshing for a change to follow just one person and look forward to reading book 2 of the 3 book series The Tomb of Atlantis.
