1 out of every 3 submarines deploying isn’t coming home. Will Alex Coleman’s boat beat the odds? No one expected war, and the U.S. Navy has paid the price. Once the greatest Navy in the world, by 2039, American submariners find themselves outnumbered and outgunned by an alliance of France, India, and the enemy lurking in the Russia. It’s not their fault that the politicians back home didn’t expect war as the world expanded into underwater territory, but now sailors like Commander Alex Coleman are left facing the consequences.
Alex’s boat is old enough to drink and his crew is a few beers short of a six pack. But he’s got to pull them together before embarking on a dangerous mission into the undersea wild west to rescue scientists working on a top secret project. If he doesn’t, no one will miss the U.S. Navy’s oldest attack submarine. But if he does…he might just change the world.
Can Alex and his fellows overcome enemy submariners with newer boats, quieter technology, and faster torpedoes? Or will more submariners rest on the ocean bottom on eternal patrol?
Fire When Ready is the third book in the series War of the Submarine, also published as Season 3 of the War of the Submarine serial on Kindle Vella. The book version has been expanded with additional scenes and chapters not available in the serial.
R.G. Roberts is the author of fantasy, military science fiction, and alternate history novels and serial fiction, currently publishing on Amazon and Kindle Vella.
This is a fine addition to the series. Good action and fine dialogue. There's a lot of superfluous filler material though. So it makes for some tedious sections. But overall, the continuity is good and the story gets better. The characters are compelling and relatable. Moving right into the next entry.
I am loving these books by the author. They mix enough energy, skirmishes, battles, geography, and characters to make an exciting tales. If you love adventure, I highly recommend these books. These stories are like a favorite shoes or slippers. Kudos to Ms. Roberts!
Ms. Roberts tells the future Navy tale with skill and knowledge gained by having walked the walk. Seemingly realistic tactics are used to great effect for the unexposed reader, a task more daunting for writers who have to keep the DOD happy by not revealing the really secret stuff. I can’t wait for book next. Well Done!
Characters aren't flat and still seem natural. Story continues to be captivating and entertaining. Unlike a lot of series this is not going flat and being dragged out to make more books. Officers and enlisted seem accurate and not everyone is a glittering war hero; appreciate the authenticity.
It is a go thing this scenario takes place in the future. How else do you account for women admirals in the Indian Navy? Or the incredible number of female flags in the American navy.
The War of the Submarine series is an action-packed series with a great cast of characters Alex Coleman and his crew of misfits get the job done. Can't wait for book 5@
I usually read one book in a series and then go to another author before coming back to the series. This one has me reading them back to back. Love the overall.plot with the many focus'. Author is very good, the editor has missed spellings and words but not enough to throw you off.
An entertaining sea rides for sure. Easy reads that capture the spirit of a potential WW 3. Always look forward to having a chance to sit down and continue the adventure!
I was "Old NAVY" Joined in 1959 Spent my time on a Essex class carrier and later on a P2V hunting subs. 6 Navy then 25 years in the Air Force. The series brings back many memories for me and I have thoroughly enjoyed them all.
For an old veteran like me, I truly enjoy a reading experience that combines great action, inside humor and an author who knows what the fuck he is talking about!!!! All here folks, ENJOY...its.a rare experience worth your time!ll
It was a good book, never read one about submariner’s life in combat, I am a retiree spec/ops officer so it was kind of boring and too, long. But don’t get me wrong I really enjoyed it. I don’t think I would enjoy a submariner’s life
R.G.Roberts has provided us with another exciting installment of this fascinating Naval tale. Characters are easy to like (or not) and the action is exciting. Look forward to the next!
An exciting story of trying times and poor leadership in the US Navy. The pages will fly by as you read thru the battles and trying situations faced as the Sub war progresses.
Great series highlighting the possible difficulties in a future war with multiple countries involved yet un united…. Technology will certainly play a role……
Enjoyed the story and I've finally got used to all the characters involved; That's taken a while! Looking forward to getting into the next book in the series 'I Will Try'.
I am continuing to thoroughly enjoy this series. Its characters become more engaging with every page and the naval details and action are superb. Highly recommended.
