"All Shivers books are equal, but some Shivers books are more equal than others"-Me, just now.

We return to the very mixed world of Shivers with one I've been curious about. This is another ghostwritten by Bob Knotts, see my review of Ghastly Shade of green for details on that. After that one, I was interested to see how this plays, along side this one having some decent reviews.

This one follows Winston as he is visiting his cousin Brad and Uncle Bob on their farm. As a city kid, he doesn't quite fit in but does actually get along pretty well. But soon things go sour as the one nice animals start to act up. Could this possibly lead to an animal rebellion.

Based on the premise, there's some mild Animal Farm influence but the comparasion ends there. I was hoping for references or winks but not so. Outside of that, this one brings us back to the better end of Shivers. It's still got the usual flaws so it's nothing /that/ good but it's about on par with Ghastly Shade of green.

The writing there was on the better end but here it's more eh. Some decent bits but there's a few too many choppy sentences early on. Not the worst we've seen but not ideal. They remind you a bit too much that Winston is a city kid and a computer geek. He's likable enough but can be slightly annoying but thankfully it doesn't get as bad as some others.

There's annoying prank fake outs early on, which annoyed and worried me. It stops soon enough but this book does have a rough start. Once things get into gear early on, it's still a bit mixed with some bits but gets more consistent in the latter half.

It really kicks into gear at a certain point. There's some blood and a lot of action later on. It's non stop and is one of the more intense and fun ones. In a series that isn't the best at delivering on the horror, this was welcome. It doesn't too repetitive either, just a tiny bit.

The reason this is happening is a bit odd. There's a computer game, on a very 90's computer, that seems to be cause. It's weird as they state it was bought a while ago yet only now is it causing things. There's no explanation for this when it would have been easy to do it. That said, it's kinda clean how it's tied to things and how they use it to end this. Plus, the way it works is a bit unique.

The ending is pretty abrupt, but not horribly so. There was less to this one so it wasn't as bad. I wish we got a wrap up so it docks points but not a ton. Also, despite some pranks, the cousins getting along was nice and at least the computer geek thing is important.

Overall, this one suffers some of the usual Shivers problems and kind of sums up the series. There's some solid and sometimes dark and fun stuff here, you just gotta wade through clumsy and annoying bits to get to it. This one is more consistent and simple and not to a big fault. It could be better but it's not bad.

It doesn't feel that ghostwritten, maybe Bob played a part in the more intense plot, I don't know. Maybe Uncle Bob was a nod to him. Either way, it's a bit frustrating early and not a big win but it being a light Good is a decent win for these.

Next time we finish off this round, finally. We go to Bone Chillers for an entry with rather unique origins. See ya then.

The story was interesting at the beginning, and I liked the bond between the two relatives, despite their different personalities. I cannot deny that the plot was good, and the atmosphere as well, but in the last pages, I began to feel a bit of dragged in the events.
#VERDICT: (6.5/10)

Winston is a computer geek and a city kid that is sent to spend two weeks of summer at his uncle's farm.

On the truck drive from the airport to the farm Winston soon realizes that his uncle and cousin love a good prank.

Winston helps Brad set up his computer and his games and all of a sudden the kids realize that the animals are turning violent against humans.

Will they be able to stop them on time?

This was so far my least favorite from the Shivers books because it dragged a little bit in the middle for me. I did appreciate they tried to do something integrating technology into the story but again I felt like the fear was not as intense as I expected.

A visit to his cousins farm turns evil when a boy starts to learn the animals of the farm will have their turn at terrorising the humans.

Good - however plot felt pretty isolated until the action started.

Basically a well-done, coherent and actually scary version of Say My Name x2 from Goosebumps. So far, Shivers has impressed me… though I have a feeling it’s probably because I have been picking rather mythically. The story is surprisingly tense and there’s even some blood shed, plus the characters—Winston and Brad—are very likable. The book has an interesting plot, and it has confident pacing throughout its page count. It’s fun and quick, and it overall is inoffensive nor awful. However, I’ve got a major gripe: the lack of explanation. There’s absolutely nothing given to us as the reader as to what truly went down within the story. We know what happened from a basic standpoint, but we have no clue why and how it came to fruition. It’s frustrating, and it leaves us confused. Whilst one could argue it works better in its mysteriousness, that’s just bull. This kind of story needs explaining, unlike books like Ghost in the Mirror. Yadda, yadda. The first twenty-five pages are rather annoying simply because of the absurd amount of fakeouts slammed into them. It’s unnecessary and exhausting. Also, ending could’ve been better; it just kind of ends abruptly, even if it is charming. Overall, 8/10. Quite good, and probably my favorite Shivers so far. Almost kind of wish the ending was a “it was a game the whole time!” type of left field maneuver.

I used to love all of the books in the 'Shivers' series when I was younger. Writing in the vein of R.L. Stine's 'Goosebumps' series, M.D. Spenser does a good job of writing an enjoyable story with a good amount of scary moments in this book.

'The Animal Rebellion' was one of my favourite entries in the 'Shivers' series when I was young. Maybe it is because a computer game called 'Animal Killers' plays a pivotal part in the story as I used to be a computer geek like the protagonist Winston in this book as well. Whatever the reason, having just finished re-reading it for old time's sake, I believe it is a great horror story for children in its own right as Winston has to overcome a lot of his personal weaknesses in order to survive the living nightmare he had found himself in in his cousin's farm (I don't want to spoil too much of the story for those who want to read it for themselves).

Highly recommended for children. Not only does 'The Animal Rebellion' has a very enjoyable story it also makes its readership aware we all have to grow up at a certain point in our lives.

I have not read this book since my elementary school days, but I remember thoroughly enjoying it. I initially laughed at the blatant, unabashed, shameless attempt at cashing in on Goosebumps, but I couldn't believe that it was about as interesting, or even moreso, than its flagship franchise! I remember vividly fantasizing about a live-action counterpart, a big-budget studio horror film about livestock turning against their owners. A moment where hundreds of cattle careen over the plains to murder our protagonists will forever stay fresh in my mind.

I wonder if it still holds up.

Never a favourite as a child, but I found this in a second-hand bookshop and it fits in with my nostalgic reads this year. I didn't like the writing much, but I still think kids would like it. I always much preferred the female-led Shivers books.

It was alright. The pacing is a bit off and everything gets wrapped up in a nice bow in the last ten pages. Maybe the best one of the series so far

I actually love animals and the rural place isn't bad for me, but this wasn't that scary of a story. Even if I read it when I was young, I don't think it would have scared me. So yeah, 2 stars only.

The book Shivers by M.D. Spenser is about a murder that happened in a very old house many many years ago, Amber and her family moved into that house after her dad almost got robbed in a late night coming home from work. They moved from New York to this small town called Jackson in Georgia, where Amber's mom used to live there in that house when she was small. On the way to town, Amber starts to see strange and unnatural stuffs, which frightens her. The family found out that Amber’s mother’s aunt, Helen, died in an accident. And after that nobody ever lived in that house, the people in the town believed that her sister Hannah killed her. One day Amber was exploring the house, she discovered a trunk containing some very old letters, and she accidentally drops one of the letters in the mailbox. The next day she gets a reply from the ghost about the murder, and clues that will help Amber to solve this horrible crime. Will Amber finds out who is the real murder that killed Helen?
The theme for this book will be bravery, because the protagonist Amber and her brother David were trying to solve a mysterious crime that happened many many years ago. They encountered many scary and unnatural things on the way solving the crime, they had to be brave and face those things in order to solve the mystery. Bravery is needed when you want to do something where you might encounter scary things, being brave can help you solve mysteries.

Amber's family decided to move to Jackson which is a small town in Georgia, because her father got robbed in a late night when they were still in New York. The strange things happen one by one after they drive to the town, a face of a girl appears in the window, the lettle that says help me, and the email that with the moving picture. The accident that happened in fifty years ago, the mystery about her great aunt Helen's death her sister which is the suspect Miss McAfee.
I really enjoy to read this book, those horrible images in Shivers make my heart pumps. I start to feel there might be ghost surround me too while I went to the bathroom. And Miss McAfee had taught me that the important of love and people. Fifty years are not a short time, I can't image that I can live by myself for fifty years, even 5 days. That will make me crazy!!!! The misunderstanding makes Miss McAfee suffer all her life which makes me so sad. :(
