Please stop with the clumsy current day references

Entertaining enough to continue with the series, although I'm surprised there isn't a placeholder for the 5th book here on Goodreads. I put those placeholders on my "want to read" list so I don't lose track of a series.

I suspect my ratings may be inflated by very good narration of the audio book versions, as the there are numerous mistakes within the story itself that keep dropping me out of it. Things like the characters being able to see a laser beam coming at them, so they can react before they arrive. Another weapon issue was a reference to the "ricochet" of a laser beam. Most annoying is the continued attempts to tie the story to our current culture or history. Apparently nothing of note happened between now and this future setting. People are even still watching reruns of today's TV shows, instead of having developed their own.

None of these issues are deal breakers, but they interrupt my immersion in the story. It's never a good thing to have the reader focusing on why the author would ever write that last sentence, instead of being swept up in the story and wondering what happens next.

This is a series I started reading a while back, bought this book and then forgot I had it! I got it on my reading list and I'm certainly glad I did. While at the start of this series had the main character, Miles Hunt, was mostly in trouble with the Republic Navy. He had found a gateway into another part of the universe, had done some exploring and then, eventually, encountered an alien force. They had battled which really mad those back on Earth mad because they were hoping to have a peaceful relationship with the first aliens humanity had encountered. Yet, these aliens, the Zodarks, didn't want peace at all.

Now, move way ahead and we find that Miles Hunt has been recognized by the Galactic Emperor for his military skills. He was called to the capital of the Empire and bestowed with the title of Viceroy! He is now the overall military commander of the Empire to the chagrin of the Altairians. Those same Altairians have been running the Empire's military for thousands of years and they have been at war with the Zodarks and Orbots. The Altairians just can't seem to find a winning strategy, so the Emperor has appointed someone new, a human, as his military expert. With that, obviously, comes some great responsibilities. The first challenge Viceroy Hunt has is the battle going on at the planet Alfheim.

Alfheim is an ice planet with nothing spectacular about it, except for the fact is does have one single very unique mineral that is used by the Altairians and the Zodarks in strengthening their starships. The Republic Navy along with the Primords have managed to land on the planet and have successfully taken it from the Zodarks. There are still Zodarks on the planet and the human troops on the ground are fighting to eliminate the last of this Zodark threat. Now they are preparing for what they expect to be a counterattack by the Zodarks. Since this planet has the attention of the Orbots, also. They have decided to provide forces for that counterattack.

The problem with this counterattack is that the Republic and Primord naval forces aren't going to be able to counter it. The counterattack is massive! There are over one-hundred ground forces on Alfheim and they are soon going to be on their own! The naval forces are getting destroyed and have to warp out with what they can save. Hopefully, they can regroup and come back in time to save the ground forces. That problem is what Viceroy Miles Hunt has to face immediately. He has to find additional Naval forces to throw into this new battle, one that he believes will result in both sides losing so much that they will have to agree to a peace treaty or at least cease fire.

This book though isn't just about the Naval engagements, although you do get to read a lot about that, but you'll also read about what a soldier on the ground is going through. You'll also run around with a medic on the ground as she does her job treating the vast number of wounded from the initial ground invasion to the new counterattack which was eventually stopped. This gives you a really far ranging perspective of the fighting. At the same time, you'll read about the actions of Viceroy Hunt as he tries to gather more forces to ensure he keeps Alfheim. He's also making plans for the future, far ranging future. Some how he's going to have to find a way to make all the different alien militaries to work together and do the right things when needed. He is the strategic expert which has been lacking in this very, very long war.

So, we're now to the point of reading what's going to happen when the combined power of the Zodarsk and Orbots come back to Alfheim. Can't the Empire under new Viceroy Hunt stop this counterattack and keep the planet under the Empire's control and therefore control the unique mineral found on the planet? The fifth book, "Into the Fire", is available on Amazon and I've added to my reading list.

Another good installment in a great series

Overall, I'm super happy with this series. It is obviously written by someone who is, or was in the military and it shows. It ads a level of realism to the series that is hard to find in other space operas.

Overall, the writing is good and I am really enjoying the plot and expanding story. It is a new take on a very old plot line in Sci-fi, but the author pulls it off with enough new angles to make it work.

My only complaint is in the editing of the individual books. There are a few hanging plot lines and there are several places where the author gets some fairly important factual items wrong, like misnaming characters, ships and at at least one point has incorrectly placed characters in situations and in places from earlier books in the series.

These are things that should have been caught in final editing by editors and/or proofreaders, but for some reason have been missed.

However, they are minor enough to be merely annoying and immersion-breaking as opposed to ruining the series.

Overall, a great attempt by the author to spin a good yarn and I look forward to reading the rest of the series. I would recommend this series to anyone interested in military Sci-fi.

rise of the Republic when is the Republic going to start rising?

I had stopped reading, military sci-fi, because sometimes I believe they go off tangent. Take this book for example. The world building is great. The characters are likable, but there are too many. Sometimes too many story threads are not a good thing. You have researchers engineers, pirates, special forces, Rangers, and different naval captains and commanders and admirals. There are too many characters, too many threads, and not enough of the Republic rising. I am four books into this series, and all I see is a stalemate between the good guys and the bad guys. So far the Republic has only had one decisive victory. That’s it in four books the claiming of one planet. When is the advanced technology going to come in to play for the rest of the Republic. The authors need to tighten up the series a bit boiling down to an essence, the republic which means the movers and shakers of the story. Like I said earlier in my review, too much of anything is not a good. thing. even with all these caveats, I enjoyed the series and will probably read it to its conclusion.

A masterful story of Sci-fi Military

Just like every other James Rosone novel you’r in for a rollercoaster of a story has the events of the first three books take us into new plotlines and intensive combat ideas from the military mind of TC Manning to make a sci-fi novel on the Lv of Star Wars or Expanse series.

Also a word of notice if you read the author notes at the end this series is going to get even bigger then an MCU storyline has with the sharing of the story content is going to make an expanding story-verse with other authors writing there own novels to expand on events from past novels and show where the story has hinted on secrets of the star gates and humanity’s place in the greater Universe.

Great Read but Losing Focus

Love the authors and their style of writing. With that said, the story has now been divided into so many sub plots and characters that its difficult to follow and enjoy what is an excellent main plot. Heck towards the end of this book the authors slam on the brakes and now we have both space pirates and an archeological mystery. Pacing has been seriously compromised as has my interest in reading a 20 book series, not counting the two announced spin off series. In my opinion a little more focus would greatly improve the enjoyment of the series.

Good series doesn’t quite make sense

I’m torn because I like this series but I feel like it’s being too drawn out and some of it does t make sense. For example the humans now have a wormhole generator ship that came be used as reinforcements at any time but they don’t use it to reinforce the fleet? I thought that was the whole point. Also the ground batte didn’t make sense. Why drop in combat droids when you can drop bombs? How does a battle for a fort get so easily overwhelmed my enemy troops with all the advanced weaponry. Still so much potential I was to read the rest

Into The Chaos. James Rosone. TC Manning

The struggle for survival continues. The soldiers from Earth combined with their allies are getting pummeled by the Zodarks and the Orbots. The military personnel from Earth and there allies from other planets are taking tremendous losses but they refuse to yield. A major battle is on the horizon which will decide there fate. Another excellent read in this series. My highest recommendation!!! Enjoyed immensely!!

Cosmic Armageddon!

This series of books has been the most interesting sci-fi series I have read and I encourage everyone who enjoys good sci-fi military and political issues to check this series out! As a Viet Nam era Naval Aviator attack pilot, combat veteran, I really appreciate the details of the plot and technical details! Can hardly wait for number 5!

Loved all so far

This an excellent story. Takes us humans from a collection of idiots that fought and killed each other in WWIII to becoming space explorers. During our exploration of space we met other species of beings that welcomed us others that warred against us. Read the books in order to get the full enjoyment.

Excellent

And I don't need to read more death and destruction. I'll assume that our hero, his wife and son live happily ever after and hope that the two buddies live to enjoy their wealth. I know they'll save the universe, the bad guys will go to their hidey holes and I'll have the pleasure of moving on to, hopefully, less bloodshed. 🙂

This story is getting BIG.
As the story gets bigger though, understandably, more and more characters, and more and more sides of the war are added. And if you blink, you miss it. I did grt confused as to who’s who for a little while.

ıt does come together nicely but I do need break from the series after each book.

Woah book 4 ramped up the misery, the urgency and yeah... the chaos. Things are so intense now that it's getting close to not enjoyable. I tend to avoid subjects that invoke memories of my experiences in war and here we are. Damn it... if I wasn't so in love with this story. I can't quit now. War is hell and we're starting to feel it now.

It's getting to be a burden to read. Space operas are one thing space soap operas another. Using one supership when it's in eyerybody's best interest to use all 7 or 8. Being treated like a dumb, dummer, stupid reader... I'm soooo glad to be one of the chosen Terrans. Sheyet can #5

The Stakes keep getting higher

Rosone and Manning raised the stakes with the new alloy that would make Earth's ships more powerful. There are new revelations about humanity's origins. Then suddenly it flips back to the campaign on Alfheim. Too many threads can ruin a plot.

4th book into the series, and it just even better

Into the chaos takes the story of the Terrans and expounds on their picking up the reins and taking the lead to ending this centuries long conflict with the Zodarks and the Orbots.

Good series. I recommend it

Space battles, and more space battles. This reads like a history channel documentary in some ways. I am rooting for the various characters, as the story jumps back and forth between them.

excellent continuation

Book, four really fleshes out the story in different avenues and really is enjoyable to read.
I’m an old school reader and this story line is pretty good without getting overly emotional or serious about itself. It is a heck of a story so far…
