There's something wrong with Hazel Atherton—she just knows it. She's not a kid anymore, but she's not grown-up either. Hazel hasn't ever kissed a boy and she's not sure she ever will. Although that doesn't stop her from thinking about Leo in the class above. Hazel wishes she could talk to her mom about it—but these days her mom is too busy hanging out with her new boyfriend. Hazel is 13, she's never been kissed, she's the newest in her friendship group of four girls, and she's the last in this group to get her period. She's anxious to grow up, but not sure if she's ready for it.

While Hazel is trying to find her place with her new friends, her mother has a new hippy boyfriend who Hazel hates, and she's also dealing with fallout from a 'hot' list some of the boys at school post.

Waiting For It approaches a variety of topics in a subtle but effective way, including the pressure to 'grow up', peer pressure, fitting in, and maturity.

I read this book at the same time as two of Perry's other titles in the Girl V World series: I Heart You, Archie De Souza and Invisible Me. Each of the books is told from the perspective of a friend in a group of four girls, aged 13.

Hazel Atherton is not the most popular girl at school, but she’s not the least either. In fact, she’s number 17 on the cruel ‘hot list’ the boys have tacked to the School Events noticeboard. But Hazel cares less about what the boys think than about where she sits amongst her friendship group: Alice, for example, was the most popular girl at primary school, but on this list she hasn’t even made the top 20! A lot of things are changing now that the girls are in high school. How do you work out what it takes to ‘fit in’ while still being true to yourself?

Waiting For It has a very simple storyline that incorporates friendship negotiation, crushes on boys and family relationships with realistic dialogue and characterisation. There is no swearing and minimal slang, but the prose is accessible and not didactic. It is the kind of writing that kids will enjoy, but which will also be palatable to parents and school libraries. Given that the protagonist is 13, the ideal reader is probably 11 or 12 – on the cusp of the changes experienced by Hazel and her gang, and looking for guidance.

The Girl v the World series aims to be funny, inspiring and heartwarming. The protagonists are fundamentally strong, smart girls, even if they’re not always making the right choices. Boys are, of course, on their radar, but their friendships are equally significant, and their self-respect refreshingly solid. As the series slogan states “You’ve got to be strong to take it on”.

I lked that it was realistic and I thought it was an amazing book. The main character is a smart girl who wants to be like everyone else but still be herself. She reminds me of myself.
I would definitely read it again.
