Brontës of Haworth Moor: How the Three Daughters of a Country Parson Became the Most Revolutionary Novelists of Their Time

"Fans of the Brontës’ novels will appreciate the lively portrayal of their creators, relatives, and friends in this informative, involving family biography." — Booklist, Starred Review

In 1820, the Brontë family traveled to their new home on the edge of Haworth Moor. There, the Brontë sisters and their brother were given the freedom to explore and expand their imaginative minds, providing the inspiration needed to create literary masterpieces that would be enjoyed for generations to come. In The Brontës of Haworth How the Three Daughters of a Country Parson Became the Most Revolutionary Novelists of Their Time, Diane Browning brings to life the world of the young Brontës. After the death of their mother at a young age followed by the loss of their two oldest sisters to tuberculosis, Charlotte, Emily, and Anne, along with their brother Branwell, discovered that play-acting, games, and writing brought a welcome distraction and joy into their lives. Browning captivatingly reveals how these activities, along with their life on the moor, their brief stints at boarding schools, and their experiences as teachers and governesses, greatly influenced their novels. Though the Brontës’ lives included sorrow and heartbreak, the three sisters achieved their childhood dreams of publishing their writings to great acclaim, despite being unknown, unconnected, and unmarried women. The Brontës of Haworth Moor brings to light all that Charlotte, Emily, and Anne had to overcome to become celebrated authors whose works are still read over and over again almost 200 years later.

A lively and informative group biography of the Brontës written for young adults. I would definitely recommend it to young people who have enjoyed reading Wuthering Heights or Jane Eyre as teens as I did. This has motivated me to read the remaining Brontë novels that I've been saving up for 25 years, and to seek out an adult Bronte biography. If anyone reading this can recommend one, please let me know. This would be a good book for English teachers to be aware of to recommend to interested young readers of classic literature.

I tried to read this briskly, but found myself not interested in rushing through it. It changed lots of my opinions about them for the better, and I feel I know and like the family much more now!

I knew absolutely nothing about the Brontës nor read their books so I’m glad to have read what seems to be a realistic and informed biography. The style of writing seemed dry and rushed for
most of the book. I have read a number of short biographies geared toward children and they are much more story-full. I think the downside of the authors desire to not speculate events and feelings (perhaps as a reaction to the sensationalized Gaskell biography) causes the writing to be sort of wooden. At times it seemed repetitive. It felt as if the book finally found its wings in the epilogue.

I do plan to read more of the author Diane Browning as she is purported to be a great children’s book author!

Reading about some of my favorite people in history was easy and fun with Diane Browning's account. I loved learning more about the Brontes (brother and father included!) and their complex yet simple lives, beliefs, and outcomes. I would have loved a greater emphasis on Emily, who is my favorite, but I understand there's not as much available about her!

Very good introduction to the Brontë family, their situation, their tragedies and their father who survived all his 6 children and his wife.
