I loved this book from the first page.

I'm a sucker for a heroine who's a jilted woman, and Darcy James is that: her douchecanoe husband took her sizable inheritance and ran. The one thing he didn't manage to do was convince her to sell the White Birch Inn, which she now runs on her own.

I'm also a sucker for a good, sexy guy with a whole lot of mystery (also: HE IS VERY GOOD WITH HIS HANDS...I mean, good in a way your typical romance hero isn't...just trust me on this...). Darcy is too and starts spying on her tenant, Baxter Smith. But he's more than just a good looking guy, and someone other than Darcy has been keeping an eye on him as well.

This book is, at times, hilarious. Let's just get that out of the way right now: I giggled like a madwoman throughout. A huge part of that is Darcy's voice; although she's damaged and has issues, there's an edge of humor to her that's never lost and it makes her infinitely appealing. Her session with her therapist had me cackling.

She looked up at him, eyes wide. “A date?”
“Oh yes. You remember dating, where you actually sit and talk with someone you like, rather than spying on them?”
“Your sarcasm is really walking the line of unprofessionalism.”

This book is also, at times, suspenseful with a mystery even *I* couldn't entirely predict. While Darcy is determined to figure Baxter out, someone else is pursuing him and isn't above a little blackmail to have her help him out. But though Baxter tells Darcy one story, his pursuer has another one entirely; as our heroine struggled with what was true and what wasn't, so did I, to the point I was cursing the author's name at points as I followed Darcy's emotional highs and lows.

This book is also sexy. I think it will appeal to non-erotica fans because the plot and characters are always, always at the forefront, but it is without a doubt a spicy romance with some explicit--but tasteful--sex.

Did I mention Baxter is *really* good with his hands?

This is probably the most fun book I've read this year and I urge anyone who enjoys a great speculative fiction romp with likable leads, a dose of romance, and a dash of quirky, to check it out.

Darcy James is deeply intrigued by her new renter, Baxter Smith. With his smoking hot looks and voracious reading habits, even after a month of them being in such close proximity he remains almost totally a mystery to her. When they finally bump into each other neither feels like they make a particularly good impression. But when Darcy is approached by a pushy stranger blackmailing her to dish information on Baxter, she suddenly has to choose sides. While I found the start of this book meandered a fair bit the author manages to get a lot of plot hooks and questions bubbling in my mind.

This is a really interesting twist on a shape changer/other worldly style of story. The background is quite well thought out and explained in detail and certainly has a unique look to it. The long scenes of discussion, however, tend to slow the pace of action and romance, but the fresh outlook makes up for much of this. The sex is hot and the characters attraction to each other is well written and believable. There are also some amazingly unforeseen good reasons to have sex in the bath with Baxter that made me both curious and giggle.

Overall this was a fun story and definitely not your standard erotic romance. For readers who think they’ve read it all or are looking for something a little different – this is the perfect book to sit back and relax with.
