More Than Words

Rate this book
Their online games turn into games of the heart.

A brutal mugging two years ago left Calli terrified to go out after dark, and incapable of real dating. Hanging out with a resentful Chihuahua every night hasn’t filled the void, and all the sex toys from the store she owns could never replace a flesh-and-blood man. An online Scrabble-type site promising anonymous, flirty fun sounds right up her alley. A like-minded geek, that’s what she needs. Unbeknownst to her, the man on the other end of the game is anything but geeky.

Travis is tired of the party scene and women chasing after his bad-boy musician persona. He wants somebody who is drawn to his mind, not his profession, and he might have found her—on the opposite side of an internet game board. After heating up the tiles with Calli online, he’s determined to meet her in person. Touch her in person. And when he does, their chemistry is undeniable. But when he discovers her tragic past he realizes it will take more than words to win her heart…and her trust.

This was a nice, fairly quick read.

Sexy guitar playing hero.

Shy, owner of an adult shop.

Sex scenes were fairly hot.

Throw in the cute dog.

And the cute cat.

Actually, throw in an attack a few years back that keeps Calli indoors at night.

And some sexy games of …

Probably be a 3.5 Stars.

I only have one complaint with Karla Doyle's writing, which is that she seems to put me in some sort of trance that prevents me from putting the book down. I was just planning to read for an hour, and then I swear I was going to be productive today. Between the naughty scrabble, the hot guitarist and smutty scenes, I just couldn't look away!! Before I knew it, I read the whole thing in one sitting. Looks like we're having pizza for dinner:)

Scrabble is HOT.... Word Games are HOT.... Words, used in the right way, are HOT....

But do you know what isn't hot ?!? Two main characters whose actions are, at times, reprehensible.

1. If you have a pet, then YOU are that pet's parent. Assume responsibility.

2. If you have a disagreement with your girlfriend, then deal with it like a respectful adult. Do NOT

As I mentioned in the opening lines of this review, Scrabble is HOT. Word Games are HOT. And an intelligent man who can express himself articulately (a la Will Sumner, Max Stella, Matthew Watkins, Landon Lucas Maxfield) is pretty much the HOTTEST thing ever, as far as I'm concerned. Unfortunately, this novel contained two main characters & several situations which I considered "not-so-hot," hence my lukewarm rating.

“Bare skin for a bare soul”

One year, eleven months, twenty-four days. She hadn’t set foot outside after dark for almost two years. Calli, a prisoner in her own home because of her fear of the dark outside world, her life consisted of her Romance Store and her sister are her only link to the outside world, content with living a life with her constant companion her pet dog, Prince Charming. One night she logs onto an on-line scrabble site, Online games for the friendly and the flirtatious, she meets a stranger who manages to coax her into flirting with him
Travis didn’t know she was a fearful, shy, pasty-faced wallflower. Online, she could be anything she wanted to be, all of the things she dreamed of being. Her true, inner self. No one would ever know.

It’s silly, that the funny-witty-smart-stranger on-line, was into him, she didn’t care he played in the band, she actually liked him. Tired of the meaningless sex, he wanted something more and now this little red rose is offering him everything he’s ever wanted. Intrigued with his on-line partner, he manages to piece together some clues as to where and how he can find her. After some mis-haps he manages to track her down, inviting himself to a real life scrabble game, where all bets were off, it was time to really get to know each other.
“I’m here because I want to be, because you smell incredible and taste so sweet. Because making you come—watching you give yourself over to me—is the sexiest thing I’ve ever seen. Let me in, sweetheart.”

Travis, knew this is who has been waiting for, but he can’t manage to convince Calli. She can’t believe that this sexy man, wants her, fucked up and all. As much as her mind refuses the idea, her body is more than willing to submit. To Travis this is more than a game, and he is in it to win, now if he can manage to defeat her demons as well.
A future with somebody who stimulated his mind and soul, as well as his body. His gut said this was it, she was it.

More Than Words is a HOT steamy read that totally made me rethink how fun playing scrabble is. It had passion, humor and a little suspense but it all ended with a HEA. Really enjoyed this read, Thanks Laci for letting me borrow this book!

This book started out strong but then went downhill some in the second half. I liked the beginning where they were flirting with each other then enjoying getting to know each other (and having some hot loving!).

Then in the second half it started coming apart due to stupid misunderstandings. There was a situation where he pushed her about her phobia in a ridiculous way then acted like an idiot and almost cheated (it went way too far for me). Then instead of talking it out they are apart for awhile, then something big happens and you think they are working it out then ANOTHER big misunderstanding happens just because they did not communicate. It took weeks for them to get back together and by the end I had to wonder how long they would stay together before the next stupid misunderstanding from lack of communication.

The story was still interesting but the end didn't live up to the promise of the beginning for me.

How did I come across this book, you might ask? Well… a very good friend of mine told me her panties caught fire… Mwahahahaha 3:) And this comes from a woman who have read adult fiction books before and she said she didn't get a lady boner, and now her knickers were on fire. WHERE DO I SIGN?

So I kind of knew my panty drawer would have to suffer the consequences if I dared to read this book. OH. MY. GOD!!!!!! This book was much more than... I expected (in a very good way).

Holy Moly Guacamole!!!!

So... one night when Calli is bored out of her mind and because she doesn't go out after dark, she ends up on an online Scrabble site. Where she meets Travis. What were the chances he could be a dropdead handsome rockstar... Calli, you lucky bish. And they start a conversation:

"You’re kicking my ass.
A reply popped up immediately, one that made Calli choke on her root beer.
Want me to kiss it better?"

"Maybe. Depends on what type of kisser you are.
His reply came immediately.
One who pays attention to the woman I’m kissing."

"Now sit back and get ready for it, because I’m going to rock your world…with my next word."

"A gentleman would ease up and give a girl a chance.
Who said I was a gentleman? I prefer to dominate.

She snorted. Ballsy guy. I have no intention of resigning.
Good, I don’t want you to quit. Now submitting, that’s another story altogether.

A shiver rippled through her at the implications. Surely you don’t expect me to refer to you as Scrabble Master T.
Drop the Scrabble and the T.
So I should call you Master?
That works for me.
"

"What do you really look like, Master? She hit send, sat back and waited for the rock star description to roll in.
Short brown hair, hazel eyes. Giant, hairy mole on my stomach and a third arm growing out of my side.
Calli laughed out loud. Travis’ answer was perfect. Ooh, we match. I like a man who’s dangerously hairy and has a nicely positioned third arm.
Damn. Now I wish I really had that extra arm.
"

"For all I know you could be a nutcase, prowling the streets with a beaten-up Scrabble board tucked under your third arm. His reply popped up instantly. So you’ve seen me around."

If I don't stop now, I'll probably get sued for posting all the content of the book.
Is it just me or did I just fall in lust with Travis?!
I'm not the only one. Calli is not only a sapiosexual person, she has a very good eyesight and she plans to use more than words where Travis is concerned.

And who in their right mind wouldn't be sexual attracted to his intelligence. Just look at this:

I just love intelligent guys, I would say he's pretty smart.

JEEZ!!! This guy oozes intelligence...

I wonder how many Scrabble points I would get for the word WOWSERS. That's the best cognitive thing I could come up with after Calli and Travis met. I'll let your imagination run wild, but here's a little help.

WOAH!!!!! I need a cold shower or maybe two, just to be sure. I don't know what happened by the end of the book, who of these two was more stupid, but thank God for Calli's sister.

On other matters, Karla Doyle is working on a new book? I NEED IT LIKE YESTERDAY!!!!!! Go and read a teaser for WIP, and don't forget about that cold shower :)

4.5--Scrabble is SO Hot--Stars!!!

Or perhaps it's Scrabble players that are HOT....or maybe having cyber sex while playing Scrabble is HOT!

“Honestly, nothing was sexier than a man playing guitar. Except maybe a guitar player with kick-ass Scrabble skills and a wonderfully naughty mind who also claimed to be the dominant type.”

More Than Words is the story of Calli and Travis! After being mugged two years prior, Calli doesn't venture out after dark. She lives in am apartment above the "romance" store she owns. Travis is a freelance website designer and guitarist for the band Black Box. He's trying to reform his playboy ways--hoping to find a woman who wants more than his pretty face and quitar playing abilities.

Calli and Travis meet on an online gaming website, playing Scrabble. They exchange witty flirtatious banter while throwing down dirty Scrabble words. Travis does a little internet stalking and finds Calli's romance store. They meet and sparksbingos, triple word scores and double letter points are flying! Regular Scrabble leads to Truth or Dare Scrabble.....

Which leads to no more Scrabble. Calli and Travis literally lit up the pages. Holy Hell were they HOT together. They spend an amazing week together....having sex, talking, having more sex, eating, having sex. Travis discovers Calli's phobia of going out at night and tries to "fix" her. I really felt so bad for Calli. She was so burdened by what happened to her. She just felt stuck....like she'd never get a chance at a real relationship.

Calli and Travis weren't without thier faults though and there were a few times I wanted to slap Travis upside the head....and Calli too. But overall I loved them both individually and together. I loved thier flity banter with each other

"I,uh... can you stop popping your pecs for thirty seconds and let me focus?"

Busted. "Want me to turn around?"

"As if that'll help. Your back is as hot as your front." Her eyes dropped to his low-slung jeans. "Well, almost." A little shake of her head and her eyes returned to his face. "God, I can't even remember what I was talking about.”

and thier off the charts sexual chemistry. This was a super sweet love story! This was my first Karla Doyle read but it definitely won't be my last!!!

Calli is terrified of going out in the dark since an attack 2 years ago. Travis is tired of the party scene. The two cross paths at a game of online scrabble.

I loved both main characters. I felt perhaps they got together a bit too easily but Im not complaining as there were some pretty steamy parts.

I dont know why this book hasnt got more ratings, the writing was easy to get into, it was short and steamy with great banter, lustworthy musician and likeable heroine. What more can a girl ask for?!

This was a great love story. I was expecting a hot read, and it was, but it was much more as well. For a short book, it packed an emotional punch. I felt so bad for poor Calli - debilitated by fear because of random act of violence two years prior. I usually get easily irritated by an insecure heroine, but Calli was just so real in all her worries and doubts, that it was actually charming and sweet. I also loved that Travis was not this perfect, always knows the right thing to say hero. He managed to f-up pretty good several times. Their whole relationship felt very organic, despite the fact they met through and on-line scrabble game (who does that.?). I loved that both Calli no Travis were already looking to change before they met each other, and that there relationship was just the final motivation to push them over the edge. It just seemed more realistic, and touching then all the books were the characters suddenly want to redo their lives because of the person they just met.

Overall, hot, and romantic. Just what I was looking for.

Was about to 1 click buy this book but noticed the $6.79 price tag. Are you kidding me? For 191 pages? Gurl, bye.

Glad I didn't waste my money on this book. Apparently they get into a fight around 60% and he goes and picks up a girl at a bar. He then proceeds to make out with her and tells her to suck his dick. Before she actually goes through with it he tells her to stop but that's still 100% cheating as he and the heroine were still together. Piece of shit wants to get his dick sucked the minute he gets into a fight with his girlfriend? Disgusting. Obviously didn't give a shit about the heroine and I don't care if he confessed to her.

Cute quick read.

Calli is a hermit who never goes out after dark. Travis is a sexy guitar player in a band but secret Scrabble nerd. They meet in an online game of Scrabble that turns a little sexy.

Calli gives him some tips on her location and Travis like a creepy stalker interested guy comes and finds her at her store and begins a relationship with her.

I will say there are some hot scenes between the two of them.

sex photo tumblr_m40yarB51J1r79k32_zpsd0d4f5ea.gif

My thoughts with how this book was lacking:
-The girl owns a "romance store" aka Sex shop but is scared to go out after dark. I understand why she is scared but I'm pretty sure creepier people come into her store than what are just walking around outside.

-For her to be so scared of everything its kind of weird to give her information to a complete stranger.

- She seemed a little too trusting

If you want a cutesy NA HEA story than this is a safe bet.

Yummy Goodness!!!!

My body gave this 5 stars! I loved this book. One word sum up "STIMULATING". It had everything I love in a book. Hot sex, love, and dirty talk. O the dirty talk was fabulous. I fell in love with both Calli and Travis. It was not only steamy, but I really enjoyed reading it. I was in the middle of this other book and happen across this piece and I couldn't put this book down. I am sorry I stink at reviews (I'm a new reader and definitely not a writer) so I can't get all technical on ya, but man you have to be dead not to enjoy Calli and Travis's story. Calli is sweet but with a freaky side and Travis is just yummy all around, who doesn't like a sexy, smart and talented guy that's confident in bed. I am immediately on to Game Plan.

“Honestly, nothing was sexier than a man playing guitar. Except maybe a guitar player with kick-ass Scrabble skills and a wonderfully naughty mind who also claimed to be the dominant type.”

This book is PERFECTION! I absolutely 100% LOVED this book. Five Shining STARS!

More Than Words is the story of Calli and Travis, who meet over online scrabble. After exchanging nothing more than some clever scrabble words and flirtatious banter, Travis decides he wants to meet Calli. After doing a little investigating, he finds that she lives only a short distance away and sets out to discover who his scrabble partner really is. It’s not long before these two come face to face. Travis is a sexy, smart, guitar player. Calli is a witty, sweet, “romance store” owner with a tragic past. While both characters have their own hang-ups, the chemistry between them can’t be denied.

“Her eyes were closed. Tit’s heaving. Mouth open as she panted and moaned. Hot, damn hot, but not enough. He wanted her desperate. Wanted her to fly off the edge for the sheer pleasure of the fall. With his left hand, he reached up and rolled her nipple between his fingers. She arched into the touch. He squeezed, she gasped. He plucked harder. She moaned. Fuck.”

Umm…fuck is right. Calli and Travis had chemistry from the start but holy hotness when things got started with them it was blazing. Every single scene I loved. These two together are just HOT. They left me smiling, giggling, blushing. My husband kept asking me what I was reading after I smiled at my kindle for hours. Even when Travis makes a couple bad decisions and I wanted to knock him upside the head, I was still convinced these two belonged together and was pulling for them the whole time!

“No amount of jerking off made the ache go away. He needed to fuck her. Craved it. Her pussy, so tight and perfect around his cock. Made for him. He couldn’t remember any woman before her- couldn’t imagine ever wanting anybody else.”

Did I mention anything about the dirty talk? Totally covered. Apparently Calli's a fan. So am I!

“I want to…ride your face…while you….fuck me with your fingers.”

More Than Words was fun and sassy and so freaking sexy. It was witty and charming. The back and forth banter between Calli and Travis was so fun and well written I was giddy while reading it. The chemistry was totally believable and so freaking hot. I seriously loved these characters together and can’t wait to read this author again. Karla Doyle, you ROCK my world.

What a sexy read involving scrabble lol!

Calli doesn't go out in the dark since she was assaulted. Travis is tired of the vain sluts who only like him because he's in a band. Calli and Travis meet while playing online Scrabble and start to chat. Things heat up pretty quickly online. Once these two meet in person it's like fireworks! Travis brings out the sexy in Calii that she didn't even know was there. And Travis realizes he's ready for something much different that his norm. These two are so incredible cute and hot together.

Calli has been attacked two years ago and is scared now to go outside after dark. She has no social life whatsoever, except running her romance store with her sister, the very sexy Caitlin. She spends her nights in her appartment with her chihuahua Prince Charming and plays online Scrabble.
Travis is web designer by day and bassist in a rock band by night. He is tired of the meaningless encounters and easy lays and plays online Scrabble for the fun of it.
One night they play together and chat and they are immediately attracted to each other. Calli leaves a few clues as to how she could be found (by giving the slogan of her store) and Travis «internet stalks» her and discovers that the store is actually close from where he lives and decides to pay her a visit.

I loved their chat, it was hot and funny, I could have been satisfied just reading that. But then they met.... and I was glad that they did because the chemistry between those two was off the charts.

Travis is my fantasy man come true: a geek, funny, smart, sexy, protective, experimented, dirty talker, a musician AND tattooed. I want a Travis! I was hooked from the very first line he wrote during their chat:
She rolled her eyes at the screen, typed her message in the chat pane and hit the send key with gusto.
You’re kicking my ass.
A reply popped up immediately, one that made Calli choke on her root beer.
Want me to kiss it better?

Calli has never been the same woman since her attack. She is shy and not so experimented in the sex department although she owns a romance store and has sampled quite a lot of her goods (just to advice the customers better of course :))
She has always lived in the shadow of her sister who is the exhuberant one and who gets all the sexy men. So Calli has some big self esteem issues. But with the anonymity offered by the internet she can be her real self and she becomes this fun and sexy woman. With Travis she dares to open up and be more confident in herself.

The sex scenes were some of the hottest I have read recently.

I highly recommend it!

"The songs I played tonight, the ones I wrote-that's the music I want to make. You're my muse, Calli. For my music, for me, as a man. Everything's better since I met you."

QUICK THOUGHTS:
This book was fun and steamy from the get-go. I loved that Travis and Calli fell for each other over online Scrabble. Not only were they a little sweet and nerdy, they were like wildfire between the sheets. Whoo-wee! This book did not skimp on the sexy times.

I was plowing through this book at light-speed, completely loving it when-BAM!-one of my bugaboos popped up that changed my level of love. I cannot stand sex scenes that happen in the hospital after an accident. Dude, I cannot believe that anybody would get off when they are busting stitches for nookie. Uh-uh. No way. I can't suspend my disbelief for that crap.

For some reason, the last quarter of this book seemed to lose some of its fun. The last little hiccup for the couple didn't ring true as a believable reason for them to be apart and not communicate for so long. Also, their reconciliation was more on the sexy and dirty side instead of the sexy and sweet side.

I really did like this story and this couple and I'm up for more from this author, for sure.

This book was such a fun read. The way the characters met was fun and creative, and the sex was smoking hot. I also liked the secondary characters, Prince Charming and Kersh. (The pets.)

I liked Travis a lot. He'd lived his life making mistakes and wanted a change, so he went looking for it.

Calli was struggling to overcome a traumatic episode, and took a chance when she wanted to spice up her love life. Enter the smoking hot sex scenes!

I thought the ending was a little bit cheesy, but that's OK--I like cheesy! I do think some of the end could've been cut out, maybe twenty five pages or so, and the pacing would've been a bit better.

All in all, a quick, fun ride!

Okay. They are playing dirty anonymous online Scrabble. IT'S MY PERFECT BOOK. And I really love Karla's voice--it's funny and quick and simple but still sophisticated, which is not an easy feat. I found both characters sympathetic and believable--even though it would have been easy for her to let her heroine to fall into a "victim" role. The sex in this book (and her first, too) is crazy-hot. I had some mild credulity issues with some aspects of the plot, but they actually didn't cramp my enjoyment of this book, which I would definitely recommend.

This was a great story. Travis is a sexy, tattooed, scrabble playing musician and Callie is a sweet and slightly neurotic woman that owns a Romance shop (aka sex store)...how could you not love this couple?!?!?!

Seriously though, both leads in this story are great. Callie is a real sweetheart but she suffered a brutal attack near her apartment. Now she can't go out side after dark without full blown panic attacks. It doesn't help that the man that attacked her was never caught and could still be out there. Since she can't go out she spends a lot of time at home trying to find stuff to do. This leads her to an online scrabble site and her meeting Travis.

Travis is a musician but has come to dislike the groupies and the unfeeling sex that goes with the lifestyle. He meets Callie online and they strike up a conversation while playing scrabble. He finds he likes her and uses clues she gave while they chatted to look for her. He finds her, which kind of freaks her out a bit but they work past that. They start to see each other and at first Callie doesn't let Travis know about her issue with going outside after dark. When he does find out about it he's actually ok with it and wants to continue to see her. He also wants her to feel safe going out and tries to encourage her to go out with him protecting her.

Unfortunately drama sets in and there are relationship issues that they both unintentionally cause. Travis ends up getting to be a real hero for Callie in a time of need but misunderstandings cause the relationship issues to continue. Fortunately there's some help from a certain cupid and they get another chance. Things are cleared up and a very good HEA ensues.

This was a great read...I just loved it and will reread in the future. I'd recommend it. Thumbs up! :D

3/19/14 - Just finished a reread of the book. I still love this couple and think the book is great. I love their interplay with each other and the connection between them and was happily satisfied with my reread. <3

Travis is the newest addition to my Fictional Men Harem, which incidentally is growing by leaps and bounds. There's just so many amazing fictional men out there in the book world!

I had to add him in because not only is he a rock star musician with tattoos who writes songs but he's also a wizard at scrabble, designs websites during his off hours AND has a cat!!! Men with cats - gets me everytime. I heart Travis.

Calli was also a wonderful character and slightly incongruous - she owns a `romance' shop AKA sex shop, blushes easily, also a wizard at scrabble, afraid of the dark and has a possessive chihuahua named Prince Charming! That is freaking hilarious.

I like that the author took these two slightly off-the-wall characters and threw them together in a story that was as straightforward as they come. There was some drama but this didn't detract from the growth trajectory of the characters as they get to know one another. It was all about Travis and Calli and how they're good for one another.

I also liked Calli's sister, Caitlyn and hope her story gets written too sometime in the future.

First off, let me say this:
Hottest. Scrabble game. Ever.

I enjoyed this book immensely, much more than I thought I would. The intimate moments were more than hot. Calli turned out to be much more passionate, and just plain sexual, than I thought, especially considering the trauma she'd been through. And with the issues she was struggling with, Travis seemed to have a lot more baggage than Calli. I think I perceived it that way because his issues seemed to be preventing the couple from moving forward more often.

Calli's sister, Caitlyn, plays a significant role in the story. I worried briefly that she would turn into the typical petty sister character, out to steal Calli's man. Instead she plays an important part in bringing the couple back together. I'm hoping she gets her own story.

To sum up, I really loved this story and I'll be attempting to keep up with this author. I'm off to buy her other book.

This has been on my TBR list forever!! I am so happy I finally got to read it because I really liked it. Callie is scared to go out at night because something terrible happened to her in the dark. So she doesn't really have any friends or anyone to talk to except her sister which at the beginning I didn't really like but she was ok by the end of the book. She plays online scrabble and actually meets someone there. He finds her in real life and hit it off. Now if Travis weren't so dang hot and yummy I would probably be creeped out that he basically cyber stalked her to find out who she was ( I know I know if he wasn't hot...). Any way I loved Calli and Travis they were so sexy together. This author wrote some damn steamy sex scenes in this book I would most def read another of her books!!

HOLY SH*&%#$$%#T! I LOVED this book. Seriously, if Ms. Doyle wrote an adaptation of the phone book, I'd read it at this point.

It's smart and sexy and funny. Travis is scrumptious and the man knows how to talk during the sexytimes! Calli was hard to get at first but I understood why she was as hesitant as she was. Her self esteem was in the crapper and it was nice to see her very slowly come to realize she was attractive and loveable.

I loved this one... great story...solid story and even though things did happen fast it just felt right to me. I'm going to read whatever she writes from here on out. I'm sold on Ms. Doyle and I hope I continue to be.

H goes out to a bar and makes out with a random girl. he then tells her to give him a bj!! before she actually does it he tells her to stop! seriously that's freaken cheating! Are we supposed to be OK because he actually stops it before ow sucks it! Hell no! this is not for me!

After reading some mentally & emotionally draining stories, I needed something to lift up my spirits. This book did it for me, it's exactly what I needed. I especially liked the beginning with the early flirtatious banter online between Calli & Travis. It was just an overall sweet story.
