Mike Wingate, abandoned by his father at four and raised in foster care, is finally living the life he always dreamed of — he’s happily married with a precocious 8-year-old daughter, and his construction company is about to finish a “green” housing development that will secure a solid future for them all. But then something from his own past, a past he doesn’t even remember, comes back to visit terror upon him and his family.
Shady characters begin threatening Mike and, when he reports them, the police seem more interested in Mike’s murky past than in protecting him. Now, with Mike, his wife Annabel and daughter Kat suddenly under attack from all sides, Mike turns to Shep, a dangerous man — and Mike’s only true friend — from his childhood days in foster care. Together they will do whatever it takes to protect Mike’s family against the hidden men behind the terrifying warning, “You’re Next.”

Wow! Oh Wow! This book was an awesome thriller! I gave this book 5 stars because it kept me on the edge of my seat and gave me an awesome thrill ride and had to come up for air taking quick breaths of air. It was so suspenseful! I love books like this. I definitely will be reading more Gregg Hurwitz books. It was really planned well. The characters were also drawn out well. I really became to know each character. I can still visualize them in my head, and they made this book so good.
Mike Wingate at the age of four was found on a playground and his Dad left him there. His Dad never comes back to pick him up. Mike is then sent to a foster home. He doesn't remember his last name or address and all what he remembers Of his Dad is the blood on his sleeve. Through out the book he tries to get his past in order and keeps wondering why his father never picked him up or came looking for him. He does meet a friend at the foster home and they become criminals. His friend becomes dangerous.
Mike years later tries to change his past where his friend still is a felon and doesn't want to change. Mike starts a family and has a wife and an eight year old daughter. Mike starts his own construction company. On one of his jobs a company he hired is fraudulent and doesn't use PVC pipes like they are suppose to. Mike is So upset about this. Later some bad guys that are dangerous monsters are after Mike and his family. At first he thinks they are after him because of the PVC pipes but then thinks it might be because of his past. Mike then calls his friend from the foster home and they both do whatever they can to protect his family.
The book is full of twists and turns. It kept me up late at night and the suspense never stops. It goes on and on. The ending was so good also. Afterwards it left with with a really good feeling. Oh Wow! I really enjoyed this book. There is so much more that happens in this book and when you finish it I think your first thought will be... Oh Wow what a wonderful suspenseful book. This book has become one of my favorites. I strongly recommend it.
Mike, Annabel und ihre 8-jährige Tochter führen ein ganz normales Leben, bis plötzlich Jagd auf sie gemacht wird. Jemand will ihren Tod, doch warum?! An sich ein spannender Thriller, zumal sich erst zum Ende hin erschließt, warum die Familie ausgelöscht werden soll. Ich mochte das Buch, aber es hatte auch einige Längen.
A four year old boy, Michael, is driven to an unfamiliar place by his father and told to go play. Afraid to get out of the car he asks his father to promise that he’ll come back for him, and with that assurance he opens the door and runs to the playground. His father doesn’t come back for him and Michael is put into foster care along with many unanswered questions, including what is his last name. As the story progresses to present day Michael becomes a target by the people who know who he is and will chase him down with the sole intent of killing him. Now married with a little girl, Kat who is eight years old he has to try and stay one step ahead of the men on his tail, and keep his family safe. You’re Next is quite the roller coaster ride with tense scenes and some heart pounding action. Although it didn’t quite tick all the boxes, it should appeal to many thriller readers.
What should be a glorious celebration for property developer Mike Wingate, soon turns into a nightmare. During an award presented for he’s green housing project, Mike is approached by a stranger who hints about his upbringing after being abandoned by his father at the age of four. Taken into foster care and given a new identity, Mike has been able to forge a successful career since his traumatic upbringing. But who knows his family history and why are they intend on hurting Mike and his whole family.
Another fast paced thriller that I’ve revisited with the audiobook, with great narration from Jeff Harding reminding why I’d enjoyed this first time around.
With a nice mixture of on the run survival whilst the need for Mike to delve into his past made this a great fast paced mystery. I practically liked his young daughter Kat, who had also been unexpectedly thrust into danger. The threat of their lives feels constantly intense, whilst the conclusion felt satisfying. It’s not surprising that this novel had stuck with me over time.
I'm giving this book 3 1/2 stars, it was a page turner from the first word. If you're looking for a book that will keep you interested and wanting more, then you want to read this. It was a bit long for me, but I totally enjoyed it! Will be reading more from this author!
Wow what a read this was i am still getting my breath back after reading this Thriller by Gregg Hurwitz Your'e Next grabbed me from the prologue & i just couldn't wait to read more Mr Hurwitz is a fantastic author & he does NOT disappoint.
Mike Wingate is abandoned by his father & left in a foster home he thinks he will come back but he never does. While in the home he has no memory of his last name or address all he remembers of his dad is the blood on his sleeve.
While in the home he meets Shep a boy on the wrong side of the tracks & they form a friendship.
Years Later Mike has a wife & family Annabel & kat his daughter everything seems to be okay until he hires a fraudulent person dealing in PVC pipes all of a sudden he gets threats for his life & that of his family.
The Plot deepens when Annabel is shot & the perp goes after his daughter he then meets a person from his past William knows Mike but Mike cannot remember him, anyway William who has CP helps Mike find out who is behind this.
I absolutely loved this book the suspense never waned & kept up a good pace.
Another new author for me, and a author I will read more, as I enjoyed this book, although a tiny let down with the last part of the book.
Thrillers don't get much more tense than when a child's welfare is threatened and in Gregg Hurwitz's You're Next there are two. One is the daughter of Mike Wingate, a property developer who has made a few mistakes in his life, but nothing so serious that his eight year-old daughter Kat should be threatened by two particularly nasty individuals. What is even more worrying to Mike is that the police seem more interested in him than in going after the criminals. The other child whose life has been jeopardised is Mike himself, the novel flashing back to show the strange circumstances in which he was abandoned as a child and left to fend for himself in a care home. There are a lot of gaps in Mike's past and it looks like someone is trying to fill them in for him. And not in a friendly way either, with some very nasty villains.
However in the last quarter of the book we discover why they are after him and I felt that it dipped from here on in. The reason, for me was unbelievable but it ends up satisfyingly enough. When I was in the middle of this book, I would have awarded it the full five star rating but by the end I decided on 4 stars as it was very enjoyable, gripping reading.
Very much in the same vain of writing as Linwood Barclay and Harlan Coben
Property developer Mike Wingate discovers that the estate of eco-houses he has recently built are not as environmentally friendly as he intended. However, it soon transpires that it is the least of his worries, when he finds himself stalked by a sinister pair called William and Dodge. At the age of four, Mike was mysteriously abandoned by his parents and spent his entire childhood in a foster home. Since then, he’s managed to built a decent life for himself with a successful business, devoted wife and daughter. Now, it would appear, something from his mysterious past is coming back to haunt him. Gregg Hurwitz has managed to integrate many of the standard ingredients of an exciting crime thriller into this novel: the secret past that won’t stay hidden, the man on the run from both the bad guys and the law, a veritable miscellany of villains, the loyal sidekick and numerous roadtrips across the south-western states. However, the central premise that underlies the whole story is highly unusual and totally unexpected. In all, exactly the sort of story that keeps the reader eagerly turning the pages.
This is one of the best mystery thrillers I have read this year. The story opens with a distraught father, who finds himself with no other choice but to leave his young son on a strange playground, far from their home. The poor young boy is of no help to the authorities because of his age and unfortunately must be put into the foster care system. His young life, by far, was not at all a great experience, however, he did learn some very valuable lessons that down the road, may just help save his life. When Michael Doe reaches adult hood he try's to leave his checkered past behind. Together with some tough sacrifices, a sealed juvenile record, and a new name, he eventually settles into a safe, comfortable life with a wife and daughter.
Just when all things in his life seem to be going his way, odd things start to happen that threaten to change all that Michael has worked so hard to build. Strangers are following them, odd cell phone messages are being received and his young daughter is assaulted. Confusion and fear for his family force Michael to call on two old friends, one is in law enforcement and one is an ex-con. With their help he discovers that what is happening to them is being orchestrated by someone that has power on a federal level but he still has no idea why. Now in order to protect himself and his family he must pull some of his old, unsavory habits out of the closet and go after this group that is targeting his family.
An intriguing, smart mystery with one heck of a punch ending. The characters are so realistic and perfectly matured throughout this fast moving story line. Scott Brick is far from my favorite narrator but he did a pretty good job with this story driven listen. Highly recommend.
The only reason this was 2 rather than 1 star, is because it was a fast read. I found the story farfetched and yet simultaneously clichéd, with the delayed explanation (of why everyone wants to kill the main character) thoroughly unconvincing and ridiculous. The Bad Guys kept coming back to life like the Terminator, and the Good Guys were way too difficult to kill. The only character who was at all likable was Shep; even the daughter was an irritating brat. In spite of all the suspense and the clunky twists and turns, the ending was what you'd expect from a Hollywood thriller with big stars... The Good Guys prevailed and limped off into the sunset together. Wow, who would have seen that coming?
I became frustrated with the main character early on in the book. He is supposed to be somewhat streetwise due to growing up in foster care. As a child he was able to remain calm in a crises and act with conviction once he'd made up his mind. As an adult, he is reminded me of the annoying screaming woman in bad scary movies. He often acts and speaks before thinking, putting his family in danger as he does so. I probably stuck with it as long as I did because I was listening to the audio book on a road trip from Fort Lauderdale to Winston-Salem, NC. That, and there are some likable characters in the story - his childhood hoodlum friend and the gruff private investigator add some substance to the story. I did fast-forward as I neared home though - I knew I wouldn't listen once I was out of the car.
I have only did a buddy read with my friend Philomena Callan, and that was for a beta read for an author. So wasn't really a buddy read, more like talking together over the book, ideas etc.
This was my first "proper" buddy read
It was nice to be partnered up and choice a book that we both had on our shelves for a while.
I had not read anything at all by this author, so it was lovely for me to be introduced to his way of writing and I have to say, I would definitely read more by him and have some others consequently on my list.
You're Next
I was able to jump right into this book due to the opening chapter when the Father is sat in the car with his child. At a park. The conversation that took place along with the actions of the Father left me wondering what this was all about.
Dropping him off and saying he would be back within a couple of hours I found very strange. So, of course I had to read on.
We see how Mike [the Father] is happily married, with a child. Decent home and seemingly to have no money worries once he hears from the bank. His construction companies job is about to build a "green" housing estate.
But things are not straight forward which brings utter detriment to his family in monetary needs. I could actually feel him sweating.
We also get to read about the abandonment of Mike by HIS Father which we find has a lot of connotations for his family and his families future.
Things turn ugly.
When you are faced with your family being in danger, what lengths would you go to?
He finds himself in a muddy water of life...... will he be able to climb out and his family survive or WHO WILL BE NEXT
I found this a brilliant read, just when the answer came to how his past came back to mind, it seemed a little bit unbelievable, however, all in all, I enjoyed this read.
So you know where I'm coming from: 1) I am a suspense fan; ordinary fiction can seldom keep me interested, and 2) I am a mom of two young children with a husband, a full time job and precious little free time, so I don't like to spend that free time being brought down or caused emotional pain. Therefore, when I read thrillers, I can only tolerate so much stress, violence, and misery. I am a Hurwitz fan so I can attest that he does a good job keeping the thrills turned up and the misery under control. Put another way - I applaud his good taste in not wallowing in violence, gore and depravity. Yes, there is definitely violence, gore and depravity in his books but it is generally bearable and almost never gratuitous. "You're Next" is another excellent Hurwitz thriller BUT it came very close to being unbearable. The suspense is ratcheted up to the point where it is excruciating and I actually had to take a break every now and then - nearly impossible when a book is as full of thrills and twists as this one. So I took away a star because the author just dragged some things out a little too much for me. The book was hard to take. Aside from that, it was as excellent as the other Hurwitz books I've read - intelligent, meticulously researched, chock full of interesting information, addictive, with artfully drawn characters, and satisfying in its conclusion.
SPOILER ALERT: Nitpicking time! There was one other thing that bothered me in this book: waterboarding?! Really?!?! Hurwitz spent all that time building up the two monstrous bad guys and even gave them a blood grudge, and when they finally had their chance to do their thing, waterboarding was their weapon of choice? Please. Hurwitz is one of the smartest guys in the world and he writes great tough-guy thrillers - does he really buy that crap about waterboarding being torture - compared to the other things these bad guys did to people?? And since it's hard to separate waterboarding from its political connotations, it brings up another problem I have with Hurwitz on occasion: his moral murkiness. He seems to get it about 98% of the time but then he'll veer off track. If he could only get his compass straight 100% of the time, he'd be another Klavan. Meanwhile, there are few other writers who come close to him so I'll keep reading!
The first 38% was depressing. I wasn’t enjoying it. But after that it started getting good. And as the story progressed it got better and better. One reason it got better was because good guys were doing some smart things and there was hope. The last several chapters were so intense I could not stop reading.
A guy and his family are on the run from bad guys and cops. The plot is complicated. The events and motivations are well thought out. Both sides do smart things. I liked that the ending was complete and happy for the good guys.
A negative is that I did not smile during this book. I prefer books where I smile because I’m surprised or enjoy the dialogue. I don’t want to fault the book, I’m just saying what kind of book it is.
I like that the author did not use artificial cliffhangers to build suspense. For example, one chapter ends with bad guy walking into a hospital room. The next chapter continues with him in that room.
AUDIOBOOK NARRATOR: Scott Brick was excellent.
DATA: Narrative mode: 3rd person. Unabridged audiobook length: 14 hrs and 1 min. Swearing language: none that I recall. Sexual content: one sex scene with vague details but no sexual language, another sex scene referred to. Setting: current day plus a back story set in the early 1980s, mostly California. Book copyright: 2011. Genre: suspense thriller.
This is my first Gregg Hurwitz novel and if his others are anything like this I will be reading a lot of them. I love an action/thriller that hits the ground running and then takes me on a roller-coaster ride through the rest of it. This is that kind of novel.
The only part of Mike Wingate’s early past that he remembers is that his father took him on a long drive when he was four years old, dropped him off at a playground and left him there alone. From there he grew up in foster homes. He and his best friend Shep have an unbreakable bond but they go their separate ways when they are grown. Shep moves towards a life filled with crime while Mike works hard to better himself. When Mike’s family is terrorized by unknown men he has to leave his critically injured wife behind and go on the run with his young daughter to protect her from harm. As circumstances force Mike to think like a criminal to stay one step ahead of the men who are after him and his daughter, he calls on his buddy Shep to help him out. The only thing Mike knows for sure is that he is running from a past he doesn’t remember and he has to find out why in order to save his family.
From the intriguing prologue and on through the novel it seems that the author’s words just effortlessly spill upon page after page creating this fast moving novel.
This was the first book I've read by this author and I enjoyed this one a lot. I loved the strength of the various relationships that the MC had with all the different characters. They were well drawn and through them I could see why the MC did what he did. I always love when these things support each other.
I was glued to this story and stayed up late just to get it finished. There were a lot of things going in the story, but that is not a negative for me. It kept things moving and I liked the creative turns the plot took. So, 4 stars.
IF YOU'RE IN A READING SLUMP OR JUST LOOKING FOR A BOOK TO READ THEN PLEASEEEEEE READ THIS!!! I swear this is THE best novel I've read in 2017 so far!!! I was hooked from page one and literally couldn't put it down! This book is just so freaking good and I swear you won't regret reading this!!
I thought this was a very well written story. The plot moved along at a good speed . The characters were realistic. Mike Wingate was abandoned by his father at a foster home when he was four. As he grows up in the school of hard knocks he befriends a fellow foster kid named Shep. As they grow up, Shep becomes a felon, while Mike settles down with a wife and daughter. Then out of nowhere his life is threatened and he must do everything he can to keep him and his family alive. He turns to Shep for help. Mike's past, which he remembers bits of pieces of before being abandoned by his father, seems to come back to haunt him. As he struggles to stay alive, pieces of his past begin to unfold. As a reader, I was very engaged in the story. I just wish Shep had more involvement in the story. He's portrayed as a badass, and although this comes through in the story, I wanted to see more of it. With that being said, I would recommend others to read this book.
Mike always thought bad of his father for abandoning him at a park at 4 years old. Growing up with a new name starting fresh. Mike has a wife daughter and a business to run. But soon he's being stalked then told he is next. Next for what? With his daughter and wife he must protect them and also find out why someone wants him dead. Could it be from his father's past or his teenage years when he was getting in trouble he don't know. But soon he finds out. The motivation to why he must die was blah. The action that lead up to it was interesting to read about. To see how much Mike had to fight to stay alive and protect his family. It was just a okay thriller to me. Maybe if the reasoning was something worthy of a interest I would have given 4 🌟. Just interesting. I'll check out more books by this author.
Well, some of it is far fetched. Some of it is just depressing. Some of it was predictable. But overall, I still say it’s awesome. It kept me interested, and was fast paced. I love the characters. The plot was great.
“You’re next” by Gregg Hurwirz trails Michael Wingate—a real estate developer who thinks he has his life made, until two thugs called William and Dodge track him down and threaten him during his award ceremony with the governor.
Mike quickly goes over possible motives. Can it be connected to the sudden discovery of PVC pipes under his newly-completed green house land? Or is it somehow related to his past—where, at age four, he was mysteriously abandoned by his father at the playground even as he noticed that his father sported blood on his shirt?
From there, circumstances gradually worsen. They start sneaking into Michael’s house. They hunt down Michael’s eight-year-old-daughter Kat, while she’s playing on the school playground. They make it a point to murder Michael’s wife Annabel. And they refuse to respond to Michael’s attempts to find out what they want. The only thing they make clear is they want to kill him.
As Michael goes on the run, dragging Kat along with him, he has no one to lean on but Shep—his old childhood friend raised alongside him in foster care—and Hank, a private investigator hired by Mike. The only problem Mike keeps running into is that the hunt for him is deeper than just shady characters, as high-level police cops start chasing after him as well.
With no one to trust and his life on the line, Mike must figure out what’s going on before the killers catch up to him.
If you like thrillers like I do, then you will devour this. This is my third favorite book of the season. It has all the components: non-stop action, an elaborate cover-up, and a main character who has no idea what’s going on. Highly readable.
You're Next is the consummate thriller novel; the main character Mike W is a 'getting there' middle-class builder with a 'fosterling' past, a beautiful yet precocious daughter and a wife that matches. Somewhat randomly his family is tormented by a pair of dicey strangers, and he has to call on his dubious childhood friend 'Shep' to help them out.
Everything about this novel is the ideal crime-thriller, a good balance between creep factor and straight out action, pure-evil bad-guys and desperate good guys all combine to somewhat satisfying read.
I only have a few complaints...
First the title - honestly YOU'RE NEXT. That has got to be the ugliest title splashed across the book I've ever seen.
Second - this book is actually too polished. All the chapters, events, characters developments all feel straight out of a book on how to write a thriller novel. I felt like the book was a soul-less product, planned edited and executed. The good guys were too perfect, even their flaws were crafted perfected to keep the book comfortably in the 'commercial novel' zone, the bad guys were (evil) cardboard.
Last (but perhaps not least) You're Next is too long. Less time could have been spent on Mike's past, as all this essentially did was introduce us to Shep and explain Mike's background which probably could have been done quicker. By the time the plot was finally revealed it all became very long-winded and verging on unbelievable, certainly not a plot-line that skillfully tied together multiple themes and characters in an intriguing story.
Basically if crime thrillers are YOUR thing YOU'RE NEXT will be a good read. If you prefer something a bit more original - not for you.
Ack. Ok I hate giving up on a book when I am so far into it but after about 300 pages in I.COULD.NOT.GO.ANY.FURTHER.MUST.PUT.DOWN.NOW.
It had potential. Boy did it have potential. With every turn the book took on a new direction and I kept wondering where is it going now? And then finally I realized I DIDN'T CARE ANYMORE and had to stop reading. I had to. I physically could not keep reading it.
A stranger recognising Mike at a party leads to the destruction of his family. From criminals to the police, all are after him. Why do they want him? Could it be connected to the mysterious disappearance of his family when he was 4 years old?
I am so gutted this book is over. It was absolutely filled with twists and none stop action. So much going on, Mike was a phenomenal character, the lengths he went to, to protect him family. His loyalty to Shep, and Shep's loyalty to him was absolutely beautiful.
It's a bit difficult for me to rate this book. The parts I liked, I really liked. But there were parts that I didn't like, too, so I'm settling for 4 stars. I found the dialogue to sometimes be totally unbelievable. It also seemed as though the sex scene had been randomly tossed in for no good reason. However! I really liked Mike and his friend, Shep. The ride to the end was definitely a roller coaster!
