In an instant, everything a man loved was taken away by a Kalku, wielding command over creatures of lore. Fleeing from death with his daughter on his back, he was swept off his feet, and forced to watch as his child died and had her body used to create an anchimayen. That moment, he swore vengeance.Years later, he’s tracked the Kalku down and forged a contract with the forces of Hell itself to get his revenge. However, the price of power isn’t cheap. Can he get revenge using the Mad Jester, before he falls into the depths of insanity? This is the first story of over 9,000 words in the Neverliese series, a collection of dark short stories that have a paranormal base, dealing with creatures of lore and otherworldly spirits.
Super descriptive scenes that detail the destructive and violent end to many, many lives. The author is also very good at defining terms, though IMHO there are so many titles and names that it does become confusing. It also makes me wonder 1) where the author gets these terms, and 2) if it's actually necessary to remember these things.
Although I can appreciate the plot of this book (revenge at any cost), I felt like this short story dragged on. That sounds harsh to even me, but I suppose it's mostly because I couldn't "get" the story. Anyhow, this story is seriously creepy and, sadly, even more evil :(. Unfortunately, I think my unlike/distaste for this story is partly due to the fact that I have already read Arcane Advent #1, which has roughly a similar story, and found that to be a great read.
Oh well; I would still recommend this book to apocalypse fans and it is well written, just not my cup of tea.
