I very much enjoyed this little action adventure short, but you really must take it in the manner in which it is meant, pure escapist adventure fun. Much like Indiana Jones movies or Romancing the Stone, they and this book, are not meant to be realistic portrayals of treasure hunters/archaeologists. You are to sit back and enjoy the adventure, no matter how unrealistic it may be.

In this case, psychologist Daniel has saved up for his vacation and it’s rather a dud. The place is a dump there is nothing to do, but he’s kind of getting into pina coladas and reading on the beach when Hawk runs into him, literally. Before he knows what hit him, he’s back in Hawk’s room getting sexy and the next morning a gun-wielding thug is threatening his life if they don’t give him the treasure, and he finds a giant ruby in his pants. He’s then forced to go with Hawk to find the treasure as the bad guys now think he’s Hawk’s partner and will kill him as well if they don’t come though.

Hawk is one of those devil may care guys who always has a grin and is sure he’s going to get out of the trouble he’s in and has a “plan” to come out on top, usually by double crossing someone, but he’s sure it will be fine and no one is really getting hurt. He’s sure this is his last gig, he can get enough treasure to pay for grad school and he’ll be out of the game, well, except maybe for that bad habit he has of stealing watches. But he can’t help it. Daniel is the opposite, he works hard, he lives with his cat, he contributes to his elderly parents retirement home bills and he wears sweater vests. Once he gets going, he’s also a tiger in the sack which changes Hawk’s perception from a guy he can use to further his plan, to someone he genuinely likes.

There is a grand finale in the cave, with guns, blood, and Daniel becoming the kind of hero he think only exist in movies. I was starting to fear that perhaps there would be a slightly too pat easy solution for the men at the end, given this takes place on a South Pacific island and neither Daniel nor Hawk live in the same place, but I thought it was handled well, without an easy out, but perhaps feasible, in that action/adventure HEA way that enjoyable movies have. The author also did some great descriptions of the island, the beaches, the jungle and how Daniel experienced it, both the good – gorgeous beaches and sunsets – and the bad – mosquitoes the size of humming birds and sand in uncomfortable places.

I liked both characters, and even though you only get Daniel’s POV, you can see his exasperation with Hawk and the mess he’s gotten Daniel into, and yet he is also attracted to the boyish charm and enthusiasm which is so different from his own staid life. He knows he’s walking into trouble, but Hawk is just so damn adorable he can’t help it. This is a perfect read when you are looking for fun and adventure and are ready to set aside a bit of everyday logic and just go along for the ride. I was left smiling at the end which is always a good thing.

From the blurb, I had a feeling before I started reading The Ruby that this was going to be a unique story. The blurb does a great job at describing it, but what it doesn’t tell you is how much fun, sexy and flirty this story really is. Between the romance, adventure and wall to wall action, The Ruby kept me on the edge of my seat and left me wanting more!

There is a lot of adventure and action in this book. It keeps referring to ‘Indiana Jones’ which is one of my favorite movie characters, but in my opinion, it reminded me more of the eighties movie, Romancing the Stone. Now when I was a teenaged girl, I LOVED this movie probably because I can and still do identify with the heroine, Joan Wilder.

In many ways Daniel is a lot like Joan. He’s extremely responsible and has a tendency to put his own happiness on hold to please others. Although he’s only thirty, he dresses much older and takes life a little too seriously. Taking this vacation has been the most spontaneous thing he’s done in years and unfortunately for him, the resort and the island he’s staying on it’s anything like he thought it would be. So, basically although he’s on vacation, Daniel isn’t having a good time.

Hawk reminds me of Jack Colton in the movie. Like Jack, Hawk is very spontaneous, smarter than he lets on, he’s not always truthful…but not quite a liar either. Hawk is extremely sexy, doesn’t take himself real seriously and just a whole lot of fun.

I loved the dynamics between Hawk and Daniel and between the sizzling chemistry they had between the sheets and the great way they ended up working as a team, The Ruby left me with a huge smile on my face. My only slight complaint about it is: I WISH the story had been longer. I was having WAY too much fun reading The Ruby for it to come to an end! If you like to read a sexy romance with a lot of adventure, then The Ruby is the perfect book for you. I only hope the author takes pity on this reader and one day writes more on these two heroes, they were simply fabulous! Highly Recommended!

Quiet, reserved Daniel is on his first vacation in ages, one that took him forever to save for, and it is turning out to be a major disappointment. The island is beautiful but the resort is a dump and his big plan to pass the time is to sip pina coladas and read until he can fly back home. Before he even cracks the book open he is literally knocked over by a movie star gorgeous man named Hawk. The sexual sparks fly and they barely make it through one drink before Daniel follows Hawk back to his room for an unforgettable night of hot sweaty sex. The next morning leaves a lot to be desired though when three armed men break down Hawk’s door and threaten to kill both Hawk and Daniel if Hawk does not deliver the treasure he was hired to find. Speaking of treasure, when Daniel finally get his pants back on he finds the largest ruby that he’s ever seen in his pants pocket. Daniel demands answers from the elusive Hawk. Instead of running the other way as fast as he can, Daniel allows Hawk to pull him into this mystery and embarks on the greatest adventure of his life.

Daniel does come out of his shell towards the end of the book and it was a joy to see but it is Hawk who made this book for me. He’s gorgeous, charming and sweet and he remains a mystery. Just because he manages to steal three watches from three different people in a couple of days doesn’t mean that you can fault him. He has to keep up his skills, you know, just in case. This ruby is his answer to getting out of a life of crime. Separately and then together these men find more than they ever expected.

If you are looking for a light, quick read with some adventure, a little romance and a nice HEA then this is a great book for you.
