Three Short Love Stories (12k words total): Mardi Gras Was Over - He arrived on a Harley one dark night and swept her off to Mardi Gras -- then off her feet. Now a lot of years have passed. The Mermaid Shawl - She moved to an island in the Great Lakes to heal from a loss. There she found two great loves -- the lace shawls she designed to sell and the beautiful stranger she pulled from the sea. Sailor's Valentine - Lobsterman Tristan Hancock was a loner with a sordid past, shop-owner Minerva Light was a newcomer with a mind of her own. Nobody in Port St. Magnus was ready for the two of them together. (All three of these stories were formerly part of love, murder, etc. which is no longer available in e-format. “The Mermaid Shawl” is also included in The Mermaid Shawl and other Shawls, Cocoons & Wraps. eBook only)
From the Allegheny Mountains where she grew up, to the Gloucester seaport where she now lives and writes, Kathleen Valentine loves nothing more than listening to the stories that people tell while sitting on front porches, gathered around kitchen tables, or swapped in coffee shops and taverns. Her collection of legends, folklore, and tall tales are woven into her fiction. The award-winning author of novels, novellas, & short story collections, as well as books of knitting patterns, & a cookbook/memoir about growing up Pennsylvania Dutch, Valentine has been listed as an Amazon Top Selling Author in Horror, Mystery/Suspense, Cooking, and Knitting. As a writer her primary interest is delving into the psychology of her characters. Her stories are sometimes mysterious, sometimes funny, usually romantic, and frequently frightening. Her characters range from lost children and grumpy old folks, to mysterious men and women who are not to be trifled with. She lives in Gloucester, Massachusetts, America's oldest seaport.
I really enjoyed the 3 short stories in this book. Yes, they are love stories but not your typical sweet happily ever after kind. These are stories to relax with and enjoy.
Mardi Gras was over is the story that I enjoyed the most. But they are all well written and interesting. The author has a descriptive way with words that will make you feel as if you are part of the story. I definitely plan on reading more books from this author.
If you like short stories, this is an excellent book that you can read in one sitting. I highly recommend this book!
Kathleen Valentine has a deft hand with short stories involving love. Her characters are not all young, dewy-eyed innocents and love is not always the answer to happily ever after. But the stories linger in your memory as something that happened to someone you know. I also like her longer novels but her story collections remain my favorites.
