I feel like I gained a new perspective on the book of Zechariah. This book was fantastic. Very clear and concise and also tied into other parts of the Bible.

The book of Zechariah is much like the book of Revelation in terms of focusing about the return of Christ. And the rule that will come under the Second Coming.

The book ends with the King of Kings (one of my favourite songs) “The Lord will be king over the whole earth.” 14:9

Zechariah is yet another prophet. I'm never going to remember all their names!

7:10 - Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the alien or the poor. In your hearts do not think evil of each other.

In January 2015 I set myself the challenge to read the complete Bible within a year. I discovered that was an unrealistic challenge, and decided to pick up my Bible as and when I felt ready to read more of it. Here is a link to all the reviews in my Bible challenge so far:

Zechariah is the longest of the minor prophets, fourteen chapters. It is set after Judah's return from Babylonian exile and concerns their difficulties in rebuilding the temple and troubles from surrounding nations.

Zechariah also contains enigmatic and spectacular prophecies regarding the coming of God to rule the world and subduing all nations. It gives a beautiful glimpse of what a world ruled by God will look like:

Zechariah 8:4 Thus says the Lord of hosts: 'Old men and women shall again sit in the streets of Jerusalem, each one with his staff in his hand because of great age. 5 The streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in its streets.

There are also many prophecies about the coming Messiah, to be the Savior and Shepherd of Israel. The prophecies tell of Jesus' first coming and entering Jerusalem on a donkey, and His second coming, landing on the Mount of Olives. I can hardly wait!

This is a collection of fantastic imagery, a miniature Ezekiel or Revelations. There are strange visions emphasizing God's power over the entire Earth, the reconstruction of the temple, and featuring Joshua the high priest and Zerubabbel the king.

Jersusalem will be restored. “I will be for her an encircling wall of fire...and I will be the glory in her midst. Later it is stated “Not by an army nor by might, but by my spirit” which is much stronger than any Earthly force, and the source of all regardless.

This is another messianic book and the judgment of all the nations is also emphasized. “Tyre built herself a stronghold, and heaped up silver like dust, and gold like the mire of the streets. Lo the Lord will strip her of her possessions, and smite her power on the sea, and she shall be devoured by fire.”
Tyre was the rich capital of commerce, but all of her wealth could not save her from being destroyed, a fate that would be shared by other ancient rich cities such as Carthage and Corinth. The only wealth that lasts forever is virtue.

The Messiah is portrayed as powerful, formidable, “his dominion shall be from sea to sea, and from the river to the ends of the earth” yet he is also portrayed as “meek, and riding on an ass, on a colt, the foal of an ass” emphasizing the value of humility carried to an unbelievable degree in the life of Christ, and not only in his entry to Jerusalem.

The end of the book emphasizes the persistence of Jerusalem in the face of the wicked, maintaining itself all the way until the last judgment. Such patience is a trial, it's martyrdom, “I will refine them as silver is refined, and I will test them as gold is tested” It is very clear that Jerusalem symbolizes the faithful, but it is also easy to see how many people could have confused such powerful imagery, and prophecies with the literal Jerusalem, leading to a worldly pride which turned the entire city into one giant idol, and as God wills it, idols have to be destroyed, if only so we can focus on the proper object of our hopes and worship.

The Douay-Rheims de-familiarizes everything! Also it had been a long time since I read this book of prophecy. Going to live with it for awhile.

“Spending time with the Bible every day doesn’t go unpunished—you can’t get away.” —Milosz, quoted by Kamienska.

". . .the lines attack like birds of prey, any time, any place." Kamienska, about poetic inspiration, but it applies as well to Bible verses in the memory.

One more book and my journey of reading the Old Testament from beginning to end will finally be complete! 🙌🏽
14 chapters | book 38 of 39

Reading Zechariah is a unique experience.
What to expect:
🌳 non- linear flow of thought
🧺 Crazy visions that are as weird as my dreams after taking NyQuil
🐴 Startling imagery that are almost jump scares
💜 I found a verse that reminded me of my Velcro students (see below)

To quote the BibleProject devotional video: We’re invited to look above the chaos & hope for the coming of God’s kingdom.

My favorite verses:

“After a period of glory, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies sent me against the nations who plundered you. For he said, “Anyone who harms you harms my most precious possession.”
‭‭Zechariah‬ ‭2‬:‭8‬ ‭NLT‬‬
https://bible.com/bible/116/zec.2.8.NLT

“The Lord says, “Shout and rejoice, O beautiful Jerusalem, for I am coming to live among you. Many nations will join themselves to the Lord on that day, and they, too, will be my people. I will live among you, and you will know that the Lord of Heaven’s Armies sent me to you.”
‭‭Zechariah‬ ‭2‬:‭10‬-‭11‬ ‭NLT‬‬
https://bible.com/bible/116/zec.2.10-...

“Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin…
‭‭Zechariah‬ ‭4‬:‭10‬a ‭NLT‬‬
https://bible.com/bible/116/zec.4.10.NLT

““This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: All this may seem impossible to you now, a small remnant of God’s people. But is it impossible for me? says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.”
‭‭Zechariah‬ ‭8‬:‭6‬ ‭NLT‬‬
https://bible.com/bible/116/zec.8.6.NLT

““This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: In those days ten men from different nations and languages of the world will clutch at the sleeve of one Jew. And they will say, ‘Please let us walk with you, for we have heard that God is with you.’””
‭‭Zechariah‬ ‭8‬:‭23‬ ‭NLT‬‬

^^^^ This one reminds me of my “Velcro students” that follow me around and visit me constantly at school. 💜

Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion!
Shout, Daughter Jerusalem!
See, your king comes to you,
righteous and victorious,
lowly and riding on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

The most important book for Christians among the other twelve books of minor prophets. There are so many signs that prophecies the events of the holy gospels, from Jesus Christ’s arrival to Jerusalem to the death of Jesus Christ by the Roman spear. It also prophecies the comeback of Jesus Christ and the judgemental day. I think this is the most important book for Christianity after the book Isaiah. The moment that God himself promises that he would come to rule in Jerusalem himself, shows us that Jesus Christ is God. So let’s praise our mighty Lord… .

I honestly had no idea that this book was so cool. Zechariah sees so many prophetic visions that I had/have so many questions about. It was quite interesting to see how Biblehub (https://biblehub.com/) explained it. I also didn't realize that so many messianic prophecies were in Zechariah. What a gem :)

My favorite part was when God called me the apple of His eye (Zech 2:8) ❤

Sidenote: The reason for such vague and short and "eh" words on each of these books, is because I wasn't challenging the study of the Bible when I read these. I was challenging myself to read the whole Bible in a year because I knew it would be discipline to keep at it daily. I do, however, plan to pick up a book and study what it is saying. Those will be longer reads and more notes.

So here is my review from my "Read the Bible in a Year" challenge. Usually just snippets of thoughts and random things I liked about the book itself. Nothing in-depth.

So here is my review of Zechariah.

These last few books of the Old Testament are always overlooked. This was beautiful.

It's hard to call Zechariah a "minor" prophet when there seem to be more phrases from this text quoted in the New Testament than most of the other minor prophets combined.

Or maybe it's just that it contains some of the Old Testament's most significant references to Christ (or at any rate, references that are applied to Christ in hindsight).

"Look, your King is coming [. . .] humble and riding on a donkey."

Certainly one of the most significant passages in the Old Testament if you're reading it in light of the Gospels.

"Return to Me," says the Lord of hosts, "and I will return to you," says the Lord of hosts.
Zechariah 1:3

As much as Zechariah tells of the terrible things that will happen to these nations, you can still see that God loves and takes care of and has mercy on his children.

"I will strengthen them in the Lord
and in his name they will live securely,”
declares the Lord.

9,9 "Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, lowly and riding on a donkey, a colt, the foal of a donkey."

Brilliant! Said around 450 years before it actually happened.

The book of Zechariah is the thirty-eighth book in the Bible, and it is found in the Old Testament. It is a book of prophecy. The author is the grandson of the priest, Iddo, named Zechariah who prophesied to Israel after they returned from their Babylonian exile. Because of his lineage, he was also a priest.

The prophecies of Zechariah are mostly dated, save for his last few. He prophesied around the same time as Haggai, and he encouraged the Jewish people to rebuild the temple. His book contains the most messianic prophecies of any of the minor prophets. The book of Zechariah showcases the theme that God remembers His promises and will make them come to pass.

Zechariah prophesied to a discouraged people. Because of this, discouraged people can find encouragement in his book. Some of his messages of hope include the second coming of Jesus, which is relevant even to believers today. Hope is a major theme of this book, and I really love that message.

The book of Zechariah is a prequel to the Book of Revelation. The prophet Zechariah reveals how the Lord Jesus Christ rules over the universe. He uses metaphors to explain to our finite minds of the readers. The Lord sends His angels throughout the earth patrolling the earth and keeping order. Unfortunately, the author pictures that we may have a difficult time understanding. As they relate to the times, we must begin to understand the times in which they are written. Please read to gain a deeper understanding how Jesus rules the world and not the powers which are visible to the naked eye.

This was an easier read than most of the other prophetic books. The prophecies especially at the end we're much more clear to see what it was referring to which was very helpful. And that made me understand a little bit better about what draws people to the prophetic books cuz it's a puzzle it's figuring out what things align where and what could people be referring to. Still not my favorite kind of book of the Bible but this one was better.

Reading the BOOK OF ZECHARIAH brought tears to my eyes. No words could describe God's unconditional love for Jerusalem and the entire land of Israel despite of the constant disobedience, pagan practices and incestuous lifestyle in the past. "I will strengthen Judah and save Israel. I will restore them because of my compassion. It will be as through I had never rejected them, for I am the Lord their God, who will hear their cries (10:6)."
