Paul commonly known as Paul the Apostle and Saint Paul, was a Christian apostle who spread the teachings of Jesus in the first-century world Generally regarded as one of the most important figures of the Apostolic Age, he founded several Christian communities in Asia Minor and Europe from the mid-40s to the mid-50s AD.
The main source of information on Paul's life and works is the Acts of the Apostles book in the New Testament, with approximately half of its content documenting them. According to the Acts, Paul lived as a Pharisee and participated in the persecution of early disciples of Jesus, possibly Hellenised diaspora Jews converted to Christianity, in the area of Jerusalem, prior to his conversion. Some time after having approved of the execution of Stephen, Paul was traveling on the road to Damascus so that he might find any Christians there and bring them "bound to Jerusalem". At midday, a light brighter than the sun shone around both him and those with him, causing all to fall to the ground, with the risen Christ verbally addressing Paul regarding his persecution. Having been made blind, along with being commanded to enter the city, his sight was restored three days later by Ananias of Damascus. After these events, Paul was baptized, beginning immediately to proclaim that Jesus of Nazareth was the Jewish messiah and the Son of God. He made three missionary journeys to spread the Christian message to non-Jews communities in Asia Minor, Greece, Macedonia, Cyprus, Judea and Syria, as narrated in the Acts.
Fourteen of the 27 books in the New Testament have traditionally been attributed to Paul. Seven of the Pauline epistles are undisputed by scholars as being authentic, with varying degrees of argument about the remainder. Pauline authorship of the Epistle to the Hebrews is not asserted in the Epistle itself and was already doubted in the 2nd and 3rd centuries. It was almost unquestioningly accepted from the 5th to the 16th centuries that Paul was the author of Hebrews, but that view is now almost universally rejected by scholars. The other six are believed by some scholars to have come from followers writing in his name, using material from Paul's surviving letters and letters written by him that no longer survive. Other scholars argue that the idea of a pseudonymous author for the disputed epistles raises many problems.
Today, Paul's epistles continue to be vital roots of the theology, worship and pastoral life in the Latin and Protestant traditions of the West, as well as the Eastern Catholic and Orthodox traditions of the East. Paul's influence on Christian thought and practice has been characterized as being as "profound as it is pervasive", among that of many other apostles and missionaries involved in the spread of the Christian faith.
“But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. 2 Tim 1:7 " for God gave us a spirit not of fear, but of power and love and self-control"
2 Tim 1:9 "who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he fave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began"
2 Tim 2:11-13 "The saying is trustworthy, for: If we have died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us; if we are faithless, he remains faithful - for he cannot deny himself."
2 Tim 2:24-26 "And the Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth, and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will."
2 Tim 4: 3-5 "For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching years they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry."
I thank God that He has drawn me to love his word more than ever before. I am finding a richness in these epistles that has grown since my first reading of them 20 years ago, and I fervently pray my love for the Word would continue to increase throughout my life. As Jesus said, these words are spirit, and they are life, and what an abundant life they are! This letter could be a letter any godly man might write his beloved son when he knew his time on earth was coming to an end. Paul leaves Timothy with reminders of his great love for him, reminders that he prays for him regularly, and last instructions on how to be effective in this world, how to withstand temptations to worldliness, and to cling to truth. What is also obvious is Paul’s continuing commitment to rescue the gospel from man’s deep-seated and pervasive tendency to add human effort to God’s work of salvation. It seems we will never stop needing repeated reminders that God has saved us, “not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began.” Reading this letter, it is hard not to believe that we are in the end times that Paul spoke of, times when “people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant…lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power.” And “the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander into myths.” Could Paul have imagined the age of the selfie? Could he have imagined “have your best life now” preached in a church? And yet it sounds more like he wrote this after reading today’s newspapers than that he wrote 2,000 years ago. But I thank God that He inspired Paul to write this 2,000 years ago, and that He has preserved it for us to learn from today.
Another amazing book from Paul to Timothy. So much wisdom, instruction, and comfort packed into this short book. Always edifying to read. I hope to go through this book with my young-adult Bible study group at some point!
5 when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also. 6 Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. (2 Timothy 1:5-7)
24 And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, 25 in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, 26 and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will. (2 Timothy 2:24)
16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
2 Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. 5 But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. (2 Timothy 4:2-5)
Warnings: “But shun profane and idle babble, for they will increase to more ungodliness. And their message will spread like cancer.” (2:16-17)
Encouragements: “Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you… for God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” (1:6-7)
Truths: “… the word of God is not chained.” (2:9)
Prophecies: “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine.” (4:3)
Hopes: “But the Lord stood with me and strengthened me, so that the message might be preached fully through me, and that all the Gentiles might hear.” (4:17)
This is one of my favorite books of the Bible, because there is so much richness to it, yet I can hear the urgency of Paul’s voice as he wrote, as he knew the end was near for him. It’s as if this were one of his final letters to write to a beloved son of the Gospel, whom he’d discipled for Jesus Christ. My heart breaks with joy for his having met Jesus in person soon after penning this letter to dear Timothy (at least it seems Paul died soon after this, from what he said in 4:6-8; I have not yet researched the timing of Paul’s death in comparison to when he wrote this book). I will be revisiting 2 Timothy often over the coming years, as I have in the past as well. Like I said, it's one of my favorites. 9/24/18
Paul continues his teaching of Christian living in response to the Gospel, gives more advice to Timothy about his faith, and encourages him to "fulfill [his] ministry."
1 and 2 Timothy are really good books to read, and you can learn so much from reading them. That's all I have to say for now. :)
It tore me apart while reading Paul's goodbye to Timothy, the young disciple who accompanied him during mission travels. "The time of my death is near. I have fought the good fight; I have finished the race and I have remained faithful (2 TIMOTHY 4:6-7)." Apostle Paul was like the National Hero of the Philippines, Jose Rizal. He fought with his written words even if he knew he would die spreading the Good News to the people who would never understand.
Some say that 2 Timothy is Paul's last will and testament. But rather it focuses on encouraging Timothy, a timid yet gifted pastor. Paul wants him to live out his sacred calling in the power of the Spirit. He wants him to make a strong commitment to the Gospel's truth and continue to preach it.
What stood out this time: don’t be afraid to suffer for the Lord (4:5). Paul’s focus on finishing well on his way into Heaven, to be with his Lord, and to be rewarded for his work here (4:6-18). Most unfortunate: Demas
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, II Timothy 3:16 NKJV
In this bittersweet letter, Paul gives his final instructions to his beloved apprentice and fellow pastor Timothy. Paul has been abandoned by all his friends while in prison, and his execution date is near. Paul implores Timothy to leave his church in Ephesus and come to him in Rome.
Paul is exceedingly positive despite his melancholy circumstances. 2 Timoth 2:11 Here is a trustworthy saying: If we died with him, we will also live with him; 12 if we endure, we will also reign with him. If we disown him, he will also disown us; 13 if we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself.
Then Paul closes his last letter with this:
2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God[a] may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
MY BIBLE CHALLENGE: In January 2015 I set myself the challenge to read the complete Bible within a year. I discovered that was an unrealistic challenge, and decided to pick up my Bible as and when I felt ready to read more of it. Here is a link to all the reviews in my Bible challenge so far:
The Second Letter of Paul to Timothy. The following are scriptures form this book that has been a source of direction and inspiration for me:
2 Timothy 1:6-7: Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands. For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
2 Timothy 2:15-16: 15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.
2 Timothy 2:22-25: Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart. But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes. And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;
2 Timothy 3:14-17: But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.
If you want to know where a person's priorities are at, watch what they do when they know they're about to die.
The apostle Paul, responsible for most of what we now know as the New Testament, asked for his books.
"When you come, please bring the leather book bag along with the books I left in Troas with Carpus--especially the parchment scrolls." ~2 Timothy 4: 13 (TPT)
Some translations use the word "cloak," which is apparently due to the very close similarity between the Aramaic words for "book" and "cloak."
Anyway, the editor of the TPT has this to offer:
"It is fascinating that the aged Paul, nearing death, found his heart attached to the manuscripts and books that undoubtedly expounded on the Old Testament writings. He knew Jesus intimately, yet longed for more revelation of the written Word until his death."
I don't recall the exact source, but I remember learning some time ago that C.S. Lewis, in the last months of his life, spent a substantial portion of his time re-reading his favorite books. I've little doubt this would have included parts of the Bible.
If I have a choice, when it's my time to go, this is how I want to go, too. Don't get me wrong. An exotic adventure or two wouldn't hurt, either.
But quiet pleasures, with time for contemplation of the things that have made you into the person you are, is critical at any stage of life, but especially (perhaps) the end.
Sometimes I'm just as inspired by the subtle details in Scripture, like people asking for their book bags, as I am by the BIG details.
The book of Second Timothy is the fifty-fifth book of the Bible, and it is the sixteenth book of the New Testament. This book is the second letter that Paul wrote to his disciple Timothy, and it was written by the Apostle about four years after the first. Paul wrote this letter during his second imprisonment in Rome and he is thought to have been beheaded by the emperor Nero soon after.
Second Timothy was written at the end of Paul’s life, and it is full of encouragement to keep the faith. Paul seems to know that his time is short and seems to be getting his affairs in order. The solemn tone and the ample encouragement is directed at Timothy to help him keep pushing forward even after his mentor’s death.
Death is certain for all of us, and to hear Paul talking about having finished his race well really puts into perspective our short lives. His encouragement is bolstering to those who are currently struggling and is a reminder that we will all one day ‘finish the race’ so we should keep pushing forward. The amount of encouragement in this letter really makes this a favorite, as I have struggled with suicidal thoughts and depression. It is good to know that one who faced so much hardship was still encouraging those weaker and younger than him even right before his death.

I found this work of immense interest and importance. The compilation of historical accounts, wisdom & proverbial insights, and thought provoking texts, along with descriptive and informative footnotes, are of great value. Explanations, including varying scholarly views depicting the material related in this book, are available for each of the 66 individual books of the Bible. This book is but one of the individual 66 books/letters which were written by forty different authors over at least 1500 years in three different languages on three different continents, which comprise the Bible. Read for life-related reasons and personal research. Overall, a great resource for the researcher, enthusiast, and devotee.
From the Promise Keepers Men's Study Bible, KJV: "Second Timothy contain's Paul's parting words to his younger associate, Timothy. By "listening in," we can gain wise and godly counsel that is as relevant to us today as it was to Timothy in the first century. This is a powerful manual for spiritual combat. It encourages us to be diligent and courageous and to make the most of the opportunities that God has given us."
This was encouraging to read as our age gets increasingly confusing and causes an increasing amount of fear. Sometimes this leads people to doubt the Church, or to leave it, and I was encouraged by reading 2 Timothy 1:14-19, but especially v. 18-19. “…[heretics] are upsetting the faith of some. But God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: ‘The Lord knows who are his,’”
2 Timothy was another great book of the Bible. In few words it said a lot. I think 2 Timothy showed us God’s love and had some good advice. It also talked about about how most people will act in the end times and that we shouldn’t be like them. This was a great book that I took a lot from and I think everyone should read it. I give 2 Timothy 5/5 stars.
The reading of God's Word is so remarkable that there is nothing that I can say to make it any better. Please, if you are a lost soul, turn to God! He can heal you and give you the greatest peace that you will ever know!
1:5 faith that started with a grandmother and a mother 1:10 Jesus abolished death 2:15 rightly dividing truth 2:23-24 don't be part of useless fighting 3:2-5 avoid people like this 3:16-17 the proper use and value of scripture 4:2 be ready
Loved this letter from Paul to Timothy too!!! The warning that "all that will live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution," (3:12) rings so true.
