As the beta of the Dark Hollow Wolf Pack, Ian is supposed to be the calm, sensible one, but when a young Hunter is captured, his overpowering attraction to the gorgeous man has him acting way out of character. As a sworn enemy to the wolf pack, the captive can’t be allowed to go free, yet the pack hates to keep Logan imprisoned. The only solution is to convince Logan to agree to mate with one of the wolves to form an unbreakable bond. Unwilling to see him mated to anyone else, Ian makes a decision—he must make the young man fall in love with him and agree to stay on as his mate. Can Logan make this difficult choice and leave behind the life he used to lead? When Ian is captured and tortured by the Hunters, Logan must make the most difficult choice of his life.
This has good ratings but I don't feel like I read the same book that everyone else did. The mates/pets are degraded, humiliated and basically treated like children. I put up with it in the previous two books but I won't be reading anymore books in this series.
A fun (if instantly forgettable) read: bloodmates, Alpha-Omega society, the knot (eep), possessive toppy werewolves and human pets, yadda yadda yadda. One of the better books in this genre that I've read.
Very weird thing with the length though: it reads as 8401 locations on my Kndle, but it's nothing like this. Maybe 2000-something? It's a long-ish short story
This book and I did not get off on the right foot. But sometimes it pays to persevere, and I ended up being fascinated by the characters and liking the storyline. The conflict in this book is a pretty major one: does Logan really believe the things he has been taught as a Hunter's son, or does he have his own preferences, can he develop his own sense of right and wrong? This internal battle is made more complicated by the fact that his transition from a Hunter to Werekin and a wolf's mate is totally involuntary. Contrary to the title, Logan does not have a choice at all.
Or does he? As Logan gets to know Ian and begins to understand with his brain what is going on, the situation develops more gray tones. The problem of being told what to do, of feeling emasculated (in the character's own words) seems to be the same as it was when his father ran Logan's life for him. To have that in a relationship that is supposed to last the rest of his life? How is he supposed to accept that? All of this totally muddles the process of coming to grips with his new life and I can’t blame Logan for taking a while to figure it all out. Learning to be honest with himself is tough enough, having it confused with everyone else's points of view and the chemicals now coursing though his body makes it almost impossible. And when it comes down to the real choice he has to make –in a harrowing story twist – I wasn't sure he was ready for it.
Ian took a lot of getting used to. Yes, he had the best of intentions, wanting to save Ian's life. And yes, he really does fall in love. But the way he goes about it? Biting Logan without his consent, thus setting in motion a chemical/biological change in the man which is pretty significant? Forcing Logan to be submissive, even though the man is clearly anything but comfortable with it? Treating him like a dependent, helpless baby? That did not endear him to me in the least. Compromise is not something that comes easy to him, but it is exactly what he has to learn.
Much like the second volume, this book crosses the line for me, uncomfortably close to non-con. Again, like in the second book, the characters behaved consistently and in accordance with the laws set out for them in this world. The plot with all its twists and a few revelations was interesting, and even though Ian infuriated me, he wasn’t a total bastard and I enjoyed seeing him come to grips with his 'rebellious' mate. As "wrong" as some of what happened felt, it was fascinating enough to hold my attention. If you like stories that are a little 'harsher' and have fewer emotionally soft moments, if you enjoy a 'macho' guy telling a physically weaker man what to do and how to behave, and if you can deal with non-con in the setting of a paranormal werewolf culture, then you will probably like this story.

I loved this book. I liked the series a lot. It´s been getting better and better with each book. Solid story and great development. I did not like the first one too much, but the second and third are very good. May be I should read the first one again.....
«No!» I lupi riusciranno a sconfiggerli? XD
I enjoyed the whole series, which has been getting better with each book. I am new to the MM paranormal genre, but I am really enjoying exploring the offerings. West explores a new side of D/s relationships where the dominant shifter treats his human "pet" in an unusually infantilizing way, asserting the right to make all decisions, and essentially treating his lover as completely helpless. It's a fantasy that I haven't seen explored in any other books, and I thought it was really well done. For a while the pet is too addled by lust to assert himself, but eventually he fights for more autonomy. Unsurprisingly, the couple develops a more complex, balanced relationship. I thought this was done most compellingly with Logan and Ian, though Nicky clearly develops into a (very amusing) force to be reckoned with as the series progresses. His response to Marco's visit to him in jail was priceless. I would definitely recommend the books to those who enjoy the gay/shifter genre, with the warning to expect a pretty extreme form of infantilization at the beginning.
This was very typical Shannon West--blatant misogyny masked by a dick.
I'm not going to do a full review, I just wanted to point out some examples of her insane logic:
Logan had been "brainwashed" by his evil father =/= Being bitten with mind-altering results that force him to be submissive
The wolves claim they are not the monsters Logan's father says they are >>> They kidnap Logan and force the "wolfkin" bite on him BUT apparently he still has the right to consent to mating. HOWEVER as I said before, his mind has been altered and he is under the sway of an aphrodisiac that makes him both overly aroused and submissive.
I've seen that specific scenario with West before, where the bottom is drugged out of his mind, and yet we're supposed to believe he can consent to anything. Lol no.
I know I know...so many hate this due to the treatment of the pets. I didn't. I liked how the thoughts and ideas concerning the pets are shifting - knowing how hard it is to upend tradition - change does not come swiftly! I enjoyed the character and really liked Logan's conflicts - in and out. It made for a novel that kept me going. Yes the dialogue can be stilted, corny, and cheesy sometimes. I can deal with that if I like the characters and they are going somewhere. The underlying social justice/tolerance pieces were o.k. for me - I don't need deep hidden metaphors and meanings in my erotic fiction. Logan was not as "childish" as Nicky was in the first book - a fact i quite appreciated. Overall I still find this an intriguing series and I am looking forward to seeing where it is going!
The series gets better with each book, so I gave book 2, 2 1/2 stars cause face it, Casey was an ass, and honestly Ian is a bit of conclusion jumping ass too but I liked the book and all three, Nicky, Rory and Logan showed they aren't just sitting down and shutting up. There are weren't very many editing issues that I noticed.
I have all 15 books in this series and I enjoyed it. I read the first 7 several years ago and decided to re-read them again since the entire series is out now. There is some redundancy in that each book heavily features the "mating" between the wolf and less dominant partner; however, the individual stories intertwine with a larger story that kept it overall very entertaining.
Book 15 is called "The Final Chapter" but it appears it's just the final chapter for the wolves being the main story as the author now has a new series out called "The Darker Hollow" using one of the minor characters (Mason, a Jax's little brother) and vampires/wolves but still taking place partly or mostly in the same area The Dark Hollow - 2 books are out in that series so far. I'm a little burned out so I haven't bought them and I'll wait to see how many more show up in that one, I don't like cliff hangers and I worry that this will be another long series and the overall story will be left open.
One note of caution, if you are a picky reader (and I admit that I am not but it is the reason for 4 stars), be prepared to get over quite a few inconsistencies in the stories, especially as the series grows. Some are small like the time Zack gets out of the river and "puts his clothes on" but then it's noted he was seen going into the lodge naked; in Connor/Jeremy's story they actually refer to them backwards; in one book Marco says he first saw Nicky in a restaurant but in the original and every other reference it was in a park; in one book Landry says he was not jealous being born a pet but in another it says he was... And there are some bigger inconsistencies you'll have to just get over, like Logan's Mom - in his book it says she raised him until he was 10 but that is not the story given in later books for him or for her.
A roaring improvement to the first two novels in terms of character development. Nicky seems changed (as I said, improved!) and Logan is the first pet to appear to have a real will of his own that he won't just let them beat out of him.
I really enjoyed the book, especially the way there love was mates for life and a lot of jealousy. It was a great read, I read this book 9 times and I'm not done yet.
Loved it, loved it, loved it! I have to say, so far, Ian and Logan are definitely my favorite couple in this series. So beautiful and passionate! I couldn't put this story down!
I have really been struggling with certain aspects of this series but have persevered because they're basically an extremely good read. The issues of concern are of course similar to those mentioned by other reviewers. Now don't get me wrong, I like reluctant slave and dubious consent stories (just so long as it taps into the slave subconscious needs). But the way he wolves force their 'pets' into a 24/7 slave role under the guise that it's for their own good, is extremely demeaning and almost made me want to stop reading. As for the dub con aspect: the pet is hopped up on a mating bite and the effect is just the same as if they had been pumped full of drugs or alcohol, inhabit ions are lowered. Now in the case of the first two books, that's not such a big deal. Nicky would probably have been willing even without the bite because they were blood mates and that attraction is apparently irresistible. In the second book it's a non issue but in Logan's case it was most definitely rape. Before the bite we saw so sign that Logan was even remotely attracted to Ian. Then he's bitten and develops an overwhelming attraction and agrees to actively participate is sexual acts against his own inclinations and with someone he despises. Now I know that not everyone will agree with me but let's look at it from a different angle. If Logan had been fed drugs and aphrodisiacs and then told it was what he wanted and that it was for his own good, we'd be seeing quite a few rants about triggers, victim blaming, Stockholm syndrome and trivialising rape. I guess what really annoyed me was the fact that Logan never pointed that out himself. Call me pernickety if you will, but them's my issues. So, considering my complaints, you might wonder why I've rated this book four stars. Basically it's because the second half of the book showed real evidence of growth in the characters attitudes and the packs sociology. It's extremely well handled. On the surface the series is just as formulaic as every other shifter series that i've read. Mates meet, insta lust/love, hot sex including biting and knotting, danger threatens, mate saves the day and happily ever after. But in the case of this series, there's a heck of a lot more going on under the surface re societal changes in attitude. I hope I'm not wrong about this, but if this growth continues throughout the series, I have high hopes of this becoming one of my all time favourite shifter series. Cross fingers.
The Dark Hollow wolves are at war. The hunters, a shadowy mysterious group of monster hunters who had been at war with the wolves for over 100 years, have been spotted close. The pack believes if they can change the one they have captured into a were, they might stand a chance at survival.
Ian, the pack beta who has no mate has been chosen for the job. He lost his female mate almost a year ago. He still mourns for her, and he doesn’t want another mate, but he might not have a choice. If they can't find a wolf to mate with the prisoner, they will have to kill him. Ian agrees to go see him before he makes his choice.
Logan is filthy dirty and refuses to talk, but Ian admires, that even outnumbered, the man won't back down. Ian makes his decision to change the prisoner, but Logan has to agree to the mating. He must choose Ian as his mate, because the bite can't be forced.
Logan Winters has resigned himself to death after his capture. They had beaten the heck out of him to subdue him but that was it. Logan wanted to have his father love him. His father is the head of the hunters but has never shown Logan love. He wanted to belong. When the wolves offer him a place to belong and love will he take that chance? Have the one thing he always wanted love?
Logan’s Choice is the third book in the Dark Hollow Wolves series by author Shannon West. This is the best book in the series so far, if you ask me. We have a ton of emotional angst with Ian and Logan. I have always wanted Ian to find love since finding out his mate died and seeing how lonely he was in book one.
He is the logical, kind member of the pack who always puts everyone else before himself, and he deserves to have a mate just as kind. Logan is confused as heck when we meet him. When the wolves change him and he finds a real home for the first time, he also has the chance to prove how loyal he can be. He is a good man and has a huge capacity to love. Logan and Ian's relationship isn't always easy, but their connection is absolutely beautiful.
As the war between humans and wolves escalates, I'm on the edge of my seat to find out who will survive and who gets the next mate in this amazing series. 5 shooting stars
Considering the other Dark Hollow Wolf Pack’s books I read in this series, Logan’s Choice is probably the one who has also another plot in parallel with the one about an Alpha man meeting his soul mate. Ian is the Beta of his pack, the second hand to Marco, and he is also the only young widower, having lost his wife five years earlier. The woman was his blood match, so Ian knows there will be no other for him, and when someone has to be picked as the one to turn an Hunter captive, to avoid killing him, Ian agrees not only to turn Logan, but also to make him his pet if Logan agrees. Now, truth be told, asking to a man in “heat” if he wants to have sex with Ian, isn’t exactly giving him a choice, but fair enough, Logan enjoyed it.
While nor Ian or Logan had same-sex relationship before, this is not a gay for you story; Ian admits that, for werewolves, gender is basically just another attribute, like hair or eyes color: there is no prejudices, and they can mate with men or women, according to who they desire; it’s attraction that leads their bodies, and if they are attracted to a same-sex partner, their mind doesn’t prevent them from following their desire. For Logan is different, considering he has an homophobic parent.
The subplot about Logan being an Hunter, and his behavior once he will face with the chance of abandoning everything he knows to become Ian’s pet was well played, according to me; it was enough believable, cause it wasn’t an easy decision for Logan, and not something that could be easily replace by good sex only. Ian, on the other hand, was this strong man who was able to balance his desires but also his duties as Beta of the pack.
spoiler i think I like the controversial couples that appear in this series. And this one it was indeed very controversial for the fictional universe. I have easily gone through the books so far. The writing is very nice and the flow of the plot is good. It can actually give me some surprises, when things are coming without expecting them. And this i think is a lot saying about the book, since i have read lots of shifters books, and I kinda start to make a bit of a pattern. But the author's style is quite different and refreshing.
I loved the story of Ian and Logan. I also enjoyed the development of the previous characters from the first 2 books. The pets want more from their relationships with their dominant partners and after some mishaps and adventures it starts to become clear that the pets are more than just brainless toys. Slowly they chip away at the almost slave-like conditions they have been subjected to and prove their worth to the pack and their lovers. I'm totally loving where this series is moving...can't wait to read book 4.
So far this is my favorite of the four Dark Hollow Wolf pack books. Logan and Ian are both very likable as the main characters. It's encouraging to see that the so-called "pets" are fighting for their rights as human beings - They are given more say in what goes on about the community and given personal rights like the choice to wear whatever clothes they want rather than the standard black leather pants and collar. It is also fun in this book to see what Logan's choice will be although we tend to see what is coming.
My opinion on this whole series can be found in the first book's review. That opinion applies to this book and I saw no point in saying the same thing over and over for the next 6 books.
Summary: Enjoyable story but disturbing themes that is potentially offensive to some readers. Even without the mating bond, Logan still behaves like any wolf's pet.
Ian and Logan are my favorite couple of the series. Their story was the most appealing to me.
Oh my gosh each of these stories in this series continue to draw you in deeper and deeper into the lives of this pack and their fight for survival. This story adds new twist and turns to the story. The complexity of this new relationship along with all the dramatic aspects of this story made it hard to put down. I can't wait to read the next installment.
Rory's speech at the end redeemed this book. I was so pissed off throughout it at the way the "pets" were treated. By the end though, it was much better
I am so happy the pets are finally going to get the training they should have had and deserve. Self defense and combat training. I hope to see Nicky beat some fckin ass in the future.
This book gets an extra due to Logan. He isn't content to sit around being a "pretty pet". He and Nicky both push for changes in the way human "pets" are treated.
