Bloody History

Bloody British History: Plymouth

Rate this book
Part of a brand new series in a vivid pulp style, this book introduces a grim and gruesome Plymouth history, from the early Roman era to World War II. Plymouth has one of the darkest and most dreadful histories on record. Beginning with the discovery of the bones of cave men and rushing through French attacks, outbreaks of leprosy and the plague, civil war sieges and deadly Spanish ships, disasters, demolitions, and the enormous death tolls of the Plymouth blitz, this book will change the way you see the city forever.

I'm a full-time writer still in 'struggling' mode, but things are looking up. I live in Devon with my partner and two wonderful kids and two cats who all interrupt me a lot!

I've written for theatre and won awards, for film and studied screenplay writing, articles for magazines, and local history. And now I'm launching my first fiction books with http://www.forelock-books.co.uk and the work has been wonderful. Always great to work collaboratively with enthusiastic people.

So there's a lot more on the way, more heart and soul to be poured out onto the page, and hopefully the readers will enjoy the new books.

This is one of the best books I’ve ever read. The reason of my loving this book is very obvious. In this book some terrific stories of Plymouth have appointed quite dynamically that made it very spontaneous.I was always a fan of history. It’s because we should know where are we form and what was our past? I read histories of romans, greeks and their heroes, brutalities, murders. A lot of sacrifices and bloody wars were held at the beneath our modern civilization but most of us hardly know their stories. Bloody british history:Plymouth is a documentary history book where the horrific past of plymouth are explained and demonstrated by telling their stories who fought and survived that battle. And I think the most amazing fact of this book is collecting those scary tales and making them alive again. I guess that’s not an effortless job for any writer. People who seek for knowledge should be impressed about the information this book contains. I’m quite wondered how that vast information could be integrated in only 96 pages! And another thing I must mention about this book, that is the illustrations and page designs were so overwhelming that made me feel that those things were happening in front of my eyes. Believe me or not when you'll read this book you’ll be obsessed in it. I’m not a dweller of England let alone Plymouth. But I read this book and fascinated by it. So I think every citizen of Plymouth should read this book. They must know their own.
The most important thing about this book is, it was a gift from one of my best friends whom I’ll never forget. You may choose this book to make a memory of yourself too.

This was a facinating book and all people from Plymouth should read. I was talking with 23 year old Social working student today and mentioed about Sir Francis Drake selling his soul to the devil at Devils point. Response, who is Sir Francis Drake! Born and bred in Plymouth this person. Lots of great facts and places to go once you finish the book for further info.

Great book for those who love Plymouth, and want to learn more about her rich past. A bit like Horrible Histories for Adults.

Nice short history. Easy to read in small chunks as each section is just 3-6 pages. Enjoyable and fun. A lot of it I wasn't aware of- such as how Stonehouse and Bretonside got their names. There were a few parts which were skimmed over that could've benefitted from a little bit more info.

My only real disappointment was that a lot of the history didn't concern Plymouth directly; for example we get a few pages coverage on the D-Day landings on account of American troops being based in and around Plymouth- I would rather have read about what happened in Plymouth, for example there were night fighters based in roborough and a Hurricane crashed into a Church tower killing the pilot- that's not mentioned. Still, overall a good book which is fun to read and an easy read for anyone aged 10+
