Nono Nonomiya is a girl-in-disguise pretending to be her twin brother, Nonomiya Yuuta. Because Woman's Ski Jumping isn't an officially recognized Olympic category, despite having exceptional skill she has to cross-dress in order to fulfill the wish of both her father and her brother. After being admitted into Okushin High School in Nagano, famous for its winter sports clubs, and entering the Ski Jumping club, her struggle to enter the Olympics and win the gold medal for Japan truly begins. Lynn Okamoto (岡本倫 Okamoto Rin) is a Japanese manga artist and a former employee of Bandai. His most famous work is the series Elfen Lied, which was adapted into a 13-episode anime series by the studio Arms. He lives in Tokyo, Japan.
3.5/5 Nononono is a sports manga about ski jumping by Lynn Okamoto the author of Elfen Lied. The lead Yuuta Nonomiya is an aspiring and super talented ski jumper. There's only one problem. Women aren't allowed to compete. She remedies this by cross dressing and moving to a different school.
We're introduced to a couple different characters including a sports news editor who apparently has the super power of reading people auras and seeing their potential. There is also new found jump rival Akira Amatsu and forced girlfriend Mikage Kourogi who has forced herself on Yuuta but doesn't know that she's a she.
The volume is fun with good art and a few good competitive jumps as far as sports manga goes it's not super realistic but I prefer it that way it keeps it more fun. Like Okamoto's other work the art is good and the women are sexy. A bit of fan service but not a ton.
Pretty entertaining, although it perhaps confirms my hunch that some sports manga are not really about the repetitive grueling nature of sports. I guess because stuff like backstories or rivalries informing who wins are .. more interesting as a story. but my experience with sports feels contradictory to this, like you can only get so consistent I feel when competing casually, and to be really really consistent and professionally competitive the sport basically must consume you. And even then sometimes things just go poorly when you're competing!
Very awesome manga especially if you love skiing! Great manga and little sad at times😭Really loves the story and art😻😁⛷⛷but the ending was rushed..😢😁🥇👌❤️
Omg omg omg omg omg omg omg omg omg. I can't believe this was finally added to GRs!!!!! I love this series, even though it was cut off because of lack of interest, I loved it! It is seriously the best sports manga out there. Totally!!!!
Oh yeah, warning there are a few "ecchi" scenes in this, just a few.
The Plot Yuuta Nonomiya is in it to win. He's going to the best academy for ski jumping and he's pretty cocksure he's the best. Problem is, Yuuta is not actually "Yuuta". "Yuuta Nonomiya" is his sister "Nono Nonomiya". Nono, for various reason which include losing her brother a few years before and the fate of her father before that, wants nothing more than to go to the winter olympics as a representative of Japan for ski jumping. She wants to regain her family honour. And so she disguised herself as her brother.
Characters Nono/Yuuta: I love Nono!!! Yes she's incredibly cocky when it comes to ski-jumping and yes, later on she hits road blocks particularly concerning her feminine figure and her ability to jump, but the best part is she learns and continues to jump. She doesn't exactly want to be a boy for the rest of her life, but she does want to ski jump and since ski-jumping is only for men, this is the only way she can do it. I like that she's cocky. It's a different take on characters in manga, especially female protags. But also, I like that she has vulnerabilities, and wants to be a girl, and wants to ski jump and wants to be able to say 'I like you' to the guy she likes.
Other supporting characters: These are a variety of ski-jumpers all great and interesting. Some of them are unbelievably ridiculous, and some are very touching. They add a lot of colour to Nono's character.
Setting Japan, obviously, but all parts of Japan where they happen to be ski-jumping.
Writing/Artwork It's a sports manga, so there's a lot of technical language. There's also very emotive scenes. I have to say, with the exception of One Piece's most emotional scenes (the backstory of Ace and Luffy) this is the next best. I loved learning about Nono's past. I nearly cried, it was that good! This was also a manga that made me really want to ski-jump, except I wouldn't because I know I'll flop badly in the first shot, and I cannot stand being imperfect, so I probably won't try anytime soon. Anyway! But the writing is seriously great. Artwork, some of the character's tend to look the same, though there are obvious differences. The main love interest is cute, his hair is as interesting as Sasuke's from Naruto and I really think it's easy to tell Nono in her female form and male form. It's not exactly beautiful artwork, but it's not uncomfortable nor ugly. I find it kind of pleasant. Overall I f***ing love this manga. It's the best sports manga (in my opinion) out there particularly for those who love shoujo manga. It's a shame that the end sucks, because it was cut off and half the plots aren't tied up including the possible romance between Nono and is cute, and before I found out that the manga was finished, I was really interested in knowing what would happen between them, but oh well! I love this manga so much, I even wrote a post about it when it wasn't on GR (but now is), check it out here: http://wordsthatflowlikewater.wordpre...
Nononono is a sports manga where the main character is a girl who lives as her dead twin brother in order to achieve her dream of competing the Olympics (there is no girl sect for ski jumping). The art is not fabulous, but it's bearable. He draws one thing very well and that's the skiing action: those scenes are BEAUTIFUL. I personally loved the comedy and sexual tension with the others until it went WAY too far / beyond my comfort zone with
Overall, I have lots and lots and lots of complaints, but Gender Bender + Psychological = a win in my book, and I thoroughly enjoyed the ride (and wanted to go skiing afterwords).
