A little romance, a little intrigue, a lot of a good read.

This story opens with Elizabeth on the first leg of her journey to visit Charlotte, with Sir William and Maria. Circumstances cut that trip short and Elizabeth ends up staying in London together with Jane, at the Gardiners, never making it to Kent. A clever recap gives us the history of what occurred until that point.

While out shopping for new music, a chance meeting brings not only Elizabeth and Miss Darcy face to face, but also Bingley and Jane! Setting ODCs onto paths of their mutual romances.

An invitation to a ‘bizarre’ party in London, sets the stage for the intrigue aspect of this story. Determined to clear Georgiana’s name Elizabeth and Darcy, at times butt-heads, at others collaborate in their stratagems to find answers!

The piece of art at the center of the story has an interesting history in regency and is a clever tie-in to the story.

This story is a mix of sweet romance and enough mystery to keep the reader engaged. This third offering from LC, cements for me her enjoyable writing style. I admit, I figured out the culprit early on, but that didn’t take away from watching E&D interact and fall in love. It may be a shorter novel and therefore a quick read, but it is entertaining and a great little escapism for JAFF lovers.

One scene I missed and would have liked to read, which was only ever so slightly alluded to was Bingley’s confronting Darcy with his anger. Another would have been Caroline’s more detailed reaction to her realization what the future will hold for her, but I love seeing her get comeuppance.

... all that my eyes can do is shine their love for you. ~ Author Unknown

In London, Elizabeth Bennet is invited to a very unusual gathering.

Every year, the hostess has paste copies of her jewelry made. Every year, she hides the previous year’s paste copies and gives them to the party guests who find them.

Elizabeth finds two pieces of jewelry, believing them to be cheap imitations. They are not!

The mystery begins:
Why were real gems not safely locked away?
Who placed the jewelry where Elizabeth discovered it?

One of the items Elizabeth found is an unusual, and very personal piece: a lover’s eye.

Her eyes are homes of silent prayers. ~ Alfred Lord Tennyson

The story moves from London to Pemberley. The Darcys host a house party to celebrate Georgiana’s upcoming birthday. The Darcy family jewels will play their part.

When the villain is finally revealed, Darcy and Elizabeth are surprised. I was less so. The thief had seemed clear for several chapters.

In spite of that, I enjoyed this unusual story very much.

A lover’s eyes will gaze an eagle blind.
A lover’s ear will hear the lowest sound.

Elizabeth Bennet’s much anticipated trip to Kent, gets only as far as London, when one of the party becomes unwell.

Elizabeth joins her sister Jane, at the house of their Aunt and Uncle Gardner.

They are thrown into the company of acquaintances, Mr Bingley, who Jane admires and Mr Darcy, who Elizabeth despises.

They also meet Darcy’s sister Georgiana, who becomes a cherished friend.

A bizarre treasure hunt for paste jewellery and the machinations of a blackguard, result in poor Georgiana being publicly accused of theft.

Although the accusation is quickly withdrawn, gossip continues.

Darcy and Elizabeth join forces to smoke out the true villain.
Along the way, Elizabeth and Darcy get to know each other better, argue frequently and fall in love.

Lyndsay Constable’s latest novella, her third book, is equally delightful as her previous works.

Lyndsay Constable has become an author whose works I consider essential reading.

Enjoyable light mystery
Not too difficult to figure out, this novella focuses primarily on events set in London and later at Pemberley after Georgiana is falsely accused of theft. It is quickly put to rights by Darcy, but he is determined to discover the actual culprit, and Elizabeth is determined to have her part in all of it. Along the way, she will fall in love with him.

The book held my attention throughout, keeping me eager to know how it would all play out. I loved it all until the end, as I felt the reader never learns the culprit’s true motive behind the thefts, especially the first one. How did that person know the location and who made them the wiser of it? They had to have known the jewellery was placed there in advance. We never learn these details. I disliked that the thief got away.

While the author considers this book to have a touch of steam, her definition and mine vary I think. This is a clean read in my opinion. I do like this author, but her last two books, while very much enjoyed, did leave me wanting more.

A sidelined journey, a London encounter, a mysterious eye necklace, a jewel heist, and second chances all around in this engaging blend of mystery and romance in a variation of Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice. Lyndsay Constable writes a fun romantic caper that read swiftly, but was thoroughly captivating.

A Lover’s Fine Eye is a long novella jumps into the P&P story about the time Jane Austen transitioned her story to a new setting. Instead of going into Kent, Elizabeth and her traveling companions stop in London due to illness along the journey. At this point, Elizabeth encounters Miss Darcy a sweet, shy young lady and they strike up a friendship. Elizabeth is well aware Miss Darcy’s brother is the man she has villainized with the help of lies from a smarmy charmer. But, even she, prejudiced against him as she is, has to admit that he’s not much like the man she had built up in her mind and all that Wickham said about him and his sister isn’t adding up. Could she have gotten him wrong?
Then a series of odd circumstances during a treasure hunt game culminating in an accusation of theft during a high society ball put blame on Georgiana Darcy and Elizabeth is determined to partner Mr. Darcy in his detective efforts to get at the truth to save his sister’s reputation and clear her of the accusation.

I love a good historical mystery and it was satisfying to have it meshed with a romance that is a softened enemies to lovers-style with all the enemy part on Elizabeth’s end. It was fun to see her slowly learn the truth about Darcy even as they were hot on the trail of a thief. Interesting that a unique piece of jewelry, a lover’s eye painting, was the catalyst that set the partners in detection and romance together.

All in all, this was a fast read, but fully fleshed out blend of history, mystery, and sweet romance. Whether one has read P&P or not, A Lover’s Fine Eye can be appreciated quite easily and I recommend it.

Charming

I really enjoyed the interaction between Darcy and Elizabeth, as well their fun sleuthing adventures in this unique variation. Written in Elizabeth’s POV, I wish there some explanation about Darcy’s bouts of silence and distance. No Hunsford/Rosings, but Wickham is present in a different way. Whether he is up to his canon tricks with Lydia is not mentioned.

A very interesting and engaging plot

This is another excellent story from this author. There is a lightness to her writing which is endearing and engaging. The story is fast paced with a gentle humour running throughout.

The author has sensibly kept her cast small allowing the characters time to show themselves well despite this being a novella. This is not easy to achieve and the author is to be commended for this.

The mystery element is very unusual and well written.

Towards the end this book seemed to be a little rushed - perhaps there was enough in this book to write a full novel. In particular there is a short scene with a letter which merited more time. At times I also found the insights into Elizabeth's thoughts a little off.

There are some errors in use of words but these do not detract from the enjoyment of this book.

What If Georgiana Darcy Was Accused of Jewelry Theft?

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Source: Review Copy from Author

TYPE OF NOVEL: Pride and Prejudice Variation Novella with some Mystery

THE PREMISE: Trading Hunsford for London, Elizabeth inadvertently brings Jane back into Mr. Bingley’s notice, becomes acquainted with Georgiana Darcy, and attempts to solve a mysterious jewelry theft with Mr. Darcy. What will be Elizabeth’s biggest challenge – clearing Georgiana Darcy’s name or protecting her heart from the falling for a man who finds her barely tolerable…

MY THOUGHTS:

I love when Darcy and Elizabeth collaborate together in any capacity, and I especially love seeing them work together in a mystery setting. The secrecy, the sharp intellect, the sharing of suspicions, the clandestine meetings – every moment is full of intrigue, tension, and emotion.

And that is what I loved most about this novella – all the moments Darcy and Elizabeth shared together. There were so many! Which was a wonderful surprise for a novella. Their exchanges felt electric and full of sparks. From unexpected encounters and private conversations to Elizabeth’s reflections and internal asides, Lyndsay Constable beautifully illustrates Elizabeth’s gradual changes in understanding and her blossoming regard for Mr. Darcy.

Although I loved all these moments and seeing Elizabeth’s relationships with both the Darcy siblings develop in such a genuine and gratifying way, I felt like the mystery elements of the story were a little less plausible. Several characters’ behaviors felt perplexing and inconsistent – such as the extreme reaction and persistent accusation of theft from someone who is giving away an abundance of jewelry and Mr. Darcy’s scheme for a birthday celebration where he invites those who slandered his sister’s name. Not to mention, the Wickham’s part, Mrs. Gardiner’s cautions against Mr. Darcy, and the culprit missing motive.

While I didn’t love as many aspects of this story as I did Lyndsay Constable’s brilliant and creative previous works – Never Inconstant and An Excellent Walker, I continue to enjoy her writing style and portrayals of Jane Austen’s characters. A Lover’s Fine Eye is a great choice for readers who love seeing Darcy and Elizabeth work together and share some stirring scenes.

This variation on Pride and Prejudice involves a fascinating bit of jewelry of a type actually in fashion during the Regency period (and some time before and after the Regency), that I had never heard of. The story is a mystery, but there's no murder, only a couple of jewel thefts. Darcy and Elizabeth team up in order to find the culprit and to restore Georgiana's reputation.

I enjoyed it thoroughly, though there are a couple holes in the story - the biggest one being how the culprit got their hands on the first set of jewels to hide them in the first place. That was never explained. I also felt that Elizabeth is a lot more stubborn, rigidly so, than in the original, though it seems necessary to this story's outcome. She also seems to go beyond the bounds of propriety a few times, in ways I like to think Jane Austen's Lizzy would not. Overall, though, an enjoyable read, about a little adventure, and I like that it relies on that bit of jewelry history, for extra interest. It's a quick read. Recommended.

Meeting by chance in London after her trip to Kent is cancelled, Elizabeth and Georgiana Darcy become good friends. Knowing the sisters means there is no chance avoiding the brother, thus Elizabeth and Darcy are thrown in each others path again. Elizabeth is astonished that the gentleman is not that haughty as she got to know him but that he deeply cares for his sister and can be quite talkative and at eases when he is among friends.
One evening, when they are all together at a ball, Georgiana is accursed of having stolen a necklace. Darcy and Elizabeth decide that they have to discover the truth and to clean Georgiana's name. While working together Elizabeth gets to know Darcy better and begins to like him. Can these feelings one day even become love? And what about Darcy's feelings? And there is also the mystery about the necklace the two have to unravel.

The story is very well written and the mystery about the necklace and the lover's eye is really thrilling. The solution was a little unexpected for me but after reading quite understandable.
I very much liked the interaction between Darcy and Elizabeth and their dialogues. They were witty and fast. It was a pleasure to read it.

I also really liked that Elizabeth gets to know another side of Darcy while becoming friends with Georgiana and she thus overthinks her picture of the gentleman. She discovers on her own that Wickham must have told her lies. With her better understanding of Darcy Elizabeth slowly begins to appreciate him and shows signs of admiration for him.

Darcy on his part is able to convince Elizabeth by his actions, this means many misunderstandings are solved because Darcy shows by his actions that he is not the man Elizabeth thought him before.

In this story there are no of the known villains (Wickham has a minor role) but one uninspected. This means ODC can develop a relationship by solving the mystery and is not interrupted in the process of getting to know each other better.

I really enjoyed the story and therefore highly recommend this book. If you like Darcy and Elizabeth solving a mystery together you should read it, too.

Elizabeth Bennet finds herself in London rather than in Hunsford and a chance meeting with Georgiana Darcy puts her back in the presence of Fitzwilliam Darcy. Elizabeth realizes over time she may not be the best at sketching characters as she and Darcy work together (because she insists) to solve a mystery.

The story starts with a cancelled trip to Hunsford while already traveling not far from London, so they are stopping and Elizabeth is staying at the Gardiner's in London. Jane is also there (like in the original Pride and Prejudice).

Elizabeth and Jane are out shopping and they encounter Mr. Bingley and Miss Darcy in a shop. I found this scene to be written quite funny. This chance encounter between Miss Darcy and Elizabeth was beautifully done. AND, of course they form a friendship which puts Mr. Darcy often in her paths.
Jane and Bingley are besotted like before, nothing new on that account.

Mr. Gardiner, Mrs. Gardiner and their nieces got invited to a ball which includes a jewelry hunt. Yep, you have read right. Bizarre, but I liked the idea how it came upon that Georgiana is accused of theft at a ball.

At this point ODC (Our Dear Couple) is working together to find out the real culprit. How I love when they join forces and are working together to resolve a mystery or something. Not at all angsty. (Gladly, sometimes I prefer not angsty.) Both working together was well done except for Elizabeth who really could annoy me at times. And a sweet Darcy, though he still showed sometimes some of his haughtiness and proudly manners, but not much.

As for other character's; No Kent Relations in the Book. Miss Bingley is present and terrible as ever. No Surprise there? Mrs. Gardiner is a much present character and a wonderfully person, how devoted an aunt.

So, I do have three critiques though. There are in my opinion questions left unanswered. First, I would have loved to read Mrs. Gardiner's reaction to ODC's betrothal? Second, what of Miss Bingley's reaction to Jane and Bingley or Elizabeth and Darcy?
Third, After they found the culprit the story felt rushed which was sad.

I loved that Lyndsay Constable included the Lover's Eye Brooch History for us to read. (Something so important in the whole story!). Thank you. It's interesting to know people wore these things, I wouldn't now that I saw pictures.

A Lover’s Fine Eye

A delightful “Who done it?” type story. No death occurs, but a thief has infiltrated the high society in London. Finding themselves at an unusual fashionable ball where part of the evening’s festivities is finding paste replicas of the owner’s real jewelry pieces, Georgiana is accused of stealing a real gem necklace versus one of the fake paste gem necklace hidden during the “gem hunt”. Needless to say Georgiana is embarrassed, Darcy is livid, and Elizabeth who found the two white boxes is convinced she will discover the real culprit behind the crime. She had given the box to Darcy to give to his sister since she didn’t find anything during the jewelry hunt. It’s the “Lover’s Eye brooch” that Elizabeth kept that start the two on their hunt. As our team of sleuth experts set their sights upon discovering who the thief is, the unlikely duo begin to fall in love. As Darcy sets the stage for discovery at Georgiana’s birthday celebration at Pemberley, Elizabeth is not to be left out of discovering the thief. The discovery shocks everyone including his witless family. The outcome: the thief was identified, Lover’s Eye brooch returned to its owner, and Darcy’s fine eyes Lover’s Eye brooch completed by the London artist along with the owner’s fine eyes as his in their HEA. If there was a clue given as to the thief was, I missed it and was surprised when it was revealed. Late night reading I guess, or a well written tale. Me thinks it is the latter!

A silly story

Two stars for good writing and good editing. Elizabeth's trip to Hunsford to visit Charlotte is cancelled due to Maria Lucas' illness. Elizabeth stays in London with Jane at the Gardiners' home. She meets Georgiana Darcy accidentally at a bookstore when they're reaching for the same novel. A friendship ensues, and Darcy is happy to see his sister bonding with the friendly Bennett sisters, and his feelings for Elizabeth grow. Meanwhile, Elizabeth still has a very poor opinion of Darcy, but she gradually sees that she's misjudged him.

The plot centers around a theft of jewelry, and Georgiana is initially suspected. Elizabeth is bound and determined to prove Georgiana's innocence, and her determination reaches a degree that crosses the line into silliness. There are too many ludicrous situations to count. There's a most unlikely invitation to a high society ball. There's Elizabeth's behavior at this ball, especially in the library. There's Darcy allowing Elizabeth to attend a meeting he arranges with Wickham. There's a meeting with an eccentric artist that's utterly strange and creepy. And on and on.

Although the writing is good, the story got so weird that I started skimming, and just wanted the book to be done. This book isn't presented as a comedy, so I expected it to make sense, and it just didn't. I don't recommend it.

There's a mystery to solve in this one. A jewel thief must be caught, which forces Elizabeth into an increasingly enthusiastic partnership with Darcy. She is not on her best behavior in this variation. While her stubbornness is useful in the end, it was difficult to sympathize with her anger. Points for originality.

𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄

While Lizzie is disappointed to see her scheduled travel to visit her friend Charlotte halted, staying in London at her relatives house with Jane is an opportunity she is determined to enjoy.
She did not expect to encounter Mr Darcy’s sister nor find her so pleasant and kind.
Without the well-known disastrous Rosing Park proposal nor the letter, Elizabeth is still seeing Darcy as the haughty deceitful fellow she believes him to be through her first assumption of his character and the vile rendering Wickham added to the picture.
I loved to watch her work everything out on her own as the further she get to know Georgiana, the more she also had to acknowledge Darcy is much more than the sum of his faults real or imaginary.
As next to his sister and his environment, he is no more the cold aloof fellow she believed him to be, he shows a side of him full of protectiveness, care and fairness all the while they banter and she realizes how wrong she has been about his character.

The investigation part is also fun as they learn to work together to piece the clues they find along their inquiries. It then slowly improves her opinion of the man to change her regard completely.

This story has Elizabeth staying in London at the Gardiners, due to Maria Lucas becoming "coach sick" while on their way to Kent and Hunsford. Jane is already visiting with her aunt & uncle.

There Elizabeth first meets Georgiana when they both are looking for a novel to read in a book store. Bingley happens to be nearby so Jane meets him and discovers that his sisters have not told him of her presence in London.

Elizabeth and Georgiana develop a close friendship. Thus, when the Darcys are invited to the famous Chinington Ball at the end of the season, Elizabeth and Jane soon also receive an invitation. Now we come to the center mystery of this story. This ball is known for Lady Chinington hiding paste copies of her real jewels and having her guests search for those and then wearing them for the rest of the evening. However, at this ball several real pieces are found to also be hidden. Georgiana finds one and is accused of stealing it.

Although G. is cleared her reputation is smeared. Darcy and Elizabeth find themselves teaming together to find the real thief. Elizabeth learns that Darcy is not at all what she thought of him after that infamous insult. And Darcy finds Elizabeth is an equal partner in solving the crime. Time is first spent in London but the action soon moves to Pemberley as a house party forms to celebrate Georgiana's birthday. A tradition of displaying some Darcy jewels sets the stage for the possibility of the thief to make a reappearance since many of the guests at this house party were also present at the Chinington Ball.

This was a sweet story and although we have a mystery there was no real angst for me.

A few smiles are added when Elizabeth "finds" a black book with pictures of congress between lovers while searching for jewels at that first ball. And of interest is the true story of a piece of jewelry known as "Lover's Eye".

This book is a delightful mystery! Elizabeth's trip to Hunsford is cancelled when Maria Lucas becomes ill on the trip to London. Elizabeth stays in London and during a trip to a bookstore, she and Jane accidentally meet Georgiana Darcy and Mr. Bingley, and later Mr. Darcy. They all begin to call on each other and become friends, although Elizabeth is still wary of Darcy, she really likes Georgiana. After an embarrassing incident at a ball, where Georgiana is erroneously accused of attempting to steal valuable jewelry, Elizabeth and Darcy have to work together to set a trap for the actual jewel thief. It is quite a surprise to find out who it is! I didn't see that coming.

Elizabeth gradually comes to realize that she did a very poor job of sketching the characters of people in Hertfordshire. I really liked seeing her gradually realizing that Darcy has many good traits and developing feelings for him. The book is primarily from Elizabeth's point of view, so we don't see much of Darcy's thought processes as he grows to love Elizabeth and decides he wants to marry her. I would have liked more romance time between Elizabeth and Darcy.

It was fascinating how the Lover's Eye brooch was woven through the story. I had to look up pictures of Lover's Eye jewelry to get a better idea of what they were like.

Once the culprit was unveiled, I thought the book ended too abruptly. I would have liked to see the loose ends tied up a little better, and see the disposition of the thief. But it's not enough of a complaint to take off a star.

I highly recommend this book!.

SO, LET’S SOLVE PUZZLE TOGETHER AND BE PARTNERS!! WHAT SAY YOU, DARCY!

It took some time for me to warm up to the story. Yet, after chapter three, it became a page-tuner. Low-angst, highly humourous. This is definitely on my reread list whenever I need a good laugh.

This is a very cute and witty and bright and energetic Lizzy that I adore her so much. And I quote here,“[…] you must never apologise for making people laugh. The first lesson in having good humour is to always pretend you were fully aware of your jest, even if it was truly unintentional.”The wit of course comes from the author whom I suspect would be this intelligent Elizabeth herself in real life. The murmur inside her head is as entertaining as the speeches she speaks aloud.

Don’t want to mention any of the plot since it would ruin all the fun. Highly recommended to who desperately needs a reprieve from the chaos in life.

In this story, Elizabeth attends the Chinington ball which is famous for a fake jewelry treasure hunt. She happens to find two jewelry boxes and gives one to Georgiana, who promptly gets accused of theft. Darcy and Elizabeth work together in order to find the real perpetrator. One of the clues is the lover's eye brooch in the other box Elizabeth found. Lover's eyes were portraits of people's eyes that they usually gave to a loved one who might wish to gaze into your eyes when you are away.
When Elizabeth insisted that she should stay and stand guard in a deserted room in a crowded house in the middle of the night because what could go wrong? But it all works out. This story was creative and amusing, not very angsty.
Steam level: Elizabeth reads a book with illustrations, that's about it.

I enjoyed “A Lover’s Fine Eye” and Lyndsay Constable is an author I’ll be reading in the future.
To be honest, I loved her “Never Inconstant” and thought to give this P&P variation a try (I haven’t read the "Excellent Walker".)
There were some very fine moments in this and I liked that the friendship between the two women helped Darcy, opening his eyes. I also liked the mystery/theft in the plot but I’d hope for some more angst.
I had to sigh at some of Elizabeth’s actions considering the era and I'd like some more...romance in that story-- that’s the reason I give it 4 stars.

This is one of my favorite variations to reread. It's just so FUN. ODC have such great chemistry and I can't get enough of them working together. Is it a bit ridiculous? Sure. Is it supposed to be? YES. It's low angst without being boring, which is a problem (to me at least) when authors try to make their story so light there's zero conflict.

I also found it hilarious how this Darcy dealt with his Jane/Bingley interference potentially blowing up in his face. I think my only complaint is I just wanted to read much, much more about this ODC.

Interesting but flat somehow. I think the story needed a full novel length.

Propriety was thrown out. Elizabeth traveled to Pemberley on her own with the Darcys and Mrs Annesley. Darcy and Elizabeth were constantly together with no chaperones.

I found the large wardrobe in the drawing room very unbelievable but the author needed Elizabeth to hide in it.

Also Darcy needs to run far away from this Elizabeth just going on the very long rant, I mean letter, she wrote telling him where to look for the stolen jewelry. She just had to get in that he should have listened to her. It was unattractive at best.
