New characters and new mysteries change Sanctuary forever. The immortalized cavalry commander, Tempus, leaves Sanctuary in the hands of Straton, the witch-cursed Stepson; his partner Critias; Sync of the Rankan 3rd Commando, and Kama, Tempus's daughter. Each feels that being left behind is punishment, and may be correct. Sanctuary goes from bad to worse with the arrival of the ominous Shepherd and a disturbing god. Meanwhile two local girls, Shawme and Merricat, find arcane articles on the Downwind beach that few understand but which the Stepsons' mage believes will shape the fate of the Sacred Band.
This classic Sacred Band of Stepsons story, from the 2012 Perseid Publishing anthology "the Fish the Fighters and the Song-girl, is newly revised and expanded by the author and first appeared in somewhat different form in Thieves' World(R), the million-copy bestselling fantasy series.
Janet Ellen Morris (born May 25, 1946) is a United States author. She began writing in 1976 and has since published more than 20 novels, many co-authored with David Drake or her husband Chris Morris. She has contributed short fiction to the shared universe fantasy series Thieves World, and edited the Bangsian fantasy series Heroes in Hell. Most of her work has been in the fantasy and science fiction genres, although she has also written several works of non-fiction.
Morris was elected to the New York Academy of Sciences in 1980.
In 1995, Morris and her husband and frequent co-writer Christopher Morris founded M2 Tech. Since that time, their writing output has decreased in proportion to the success of the company, which works with U.S. federal and military agencies on non-lethal weapon systems and software.
I have been a fan of Janet Morris and her literary creation known as Tempus Thales longer than I can recall or she would like me to say. The re-workings being done in the realm of Sanctuary and The Sacred Band are nothing short of brilliant. This is a taste to whet your appetite and will have you scooping up The Fish the Fighters and the Song-Girl: Sacred Band of Stepsons: Sacred Band Tales 2 (Volume 2) before the screen fades on your Kindle.
What I enjoy most about these stories are the amazing depth. It is like Dr. Who in that somebody you meet in passing may just show up later to be of great importance and it will take you a few head scratches as you try to remember where this character seems familiar. The cast here is vast and requires the reader to do something that many have forgotten how: LET GO. This story (as with all the others in this glorious mythology) demands that you pay all your attention. The beauty is, you WANT to because it is so vivid and detailed. These are not simply characters, but PEOPLE. You come to know them and this is a tribute to the masterful writing of Ms. Morris because she will be given no leeway if she were to write anything that was against the nature of these people you come to know as a reader.
The Wake of the Riddler is an excellent sampling of Janet Morris' Heroic Fantasy tales of an ancient world that will conjure images of a Rome in all her glory, the beauty and splendor of Troy, Athens, Sparta, and the Greek myths. Her style is classic and literary, but so fun and easy to read. This is Homeric Heroic Fantasy Fiction at its finest, and a welcome diversion from the scores of epic novels that seem drawn from video games, with never-ending battle scenes. This one reads almost like a mystery, with subplots and characters that gift us with sharp descriptions and passages of wizardry, ancient weaponry, and good old fashion lust.
An Epic Story of dark passions, castaways and left-behinds
In Wake of the Riddler, Kama, the daughter of the Sacred Band's commander, comes to Sanctuary, bestselling fantasy town of myth, legend, and chicanery. Tempus has gone north, leaving the town of thieves in the hands of Critias, his executive officer. Crit's problems are many, including Kama. These two have history, which I'll leave you to read for yourself.
Kama, a female warrior and bard, steals this story even from the wonderful cast of Sacred Band characters around her. You'll adore her; she'll make you laugh and may even make you weep.
This canonical story from the bestselling Thieves' World series takes you on a tour through the darkest passions of castaways and left-behinds. And more: what happens in this story is critical to the grand novel, The Sacred Band, which comes after, if you're reading the stories in order. You can read this story alone, or in company with its ground-breaking companions, and get a good idea why this tale is from a million-copy selling series.
Punishment? The ones the Riddler, the Black, left behind are quite sure they are being punished. The very next question is will they live through the experience? The man in the middle is pulled in several directions all at once. The daughter of the Riddler is teetering on the edge of something. Which way will she fall? It is a ring within a ring and nothing is clear. The stage is being set for something, but what?
Was amazing, after a more than two decade break from reading these, to remember was who and what is what; with helpful hints, of course. Bit of a mystery at the end.
A continuation of the stories of the Sacred Band in Sanctuary . . .
This is a continuation of the Sacred Band stories set in Sanctuary. It becomes harder to track some of the backgrounds of the characters and the interconnectedness of the tales as time goes on and the backstory needed to follow the tales becomes more complex . . .
