This book presents practical applications techniques for the 6502. Use it and a few low-cost components to build a complete home alarm system (including fire protection), as well as an electronic piano, a motor speed-regulator, a time-of-day clock, a simulated traffic control system, and a Morse code generator. You can also design an industrial control loop for temperature control (including analog-to-digital conversion), and your own simple peripherals, from paper-tape reader to microprinter.
For 1979, this is an outstanding book. Zaks begins by describing input/output chips (such as the PIA, VIA, and RIOT) and how to (6502) program them. Then he shows how to create many hardware and assembly-language based projects, from home alarm systems to DTMF phone dialers (blue boxes anyone?). Some experience with electronics and 6502 programming is a prerequisite.
