Okay, I don't even know what to say about this. It was AWFUL.

So fucking awful that it was almost humorous. HOWEVER, it was also so weird that I find myself wanting to read the second one, just to see where the FUCK this is going.

It's like when someone says, "Hey, do you want to see something really gross?"

Yes, yes I do, actually.

Or when someone holds something up to you and says, "Oh my God, smell this."

And I do. Because I'm ri-goddamn-diculously stupid.

I want to know where this crazy train wreck is going.

For that reason, I am not even going to rate this because - while I WANT to give it 1 star - I also find myself drawn to this awfulness so I'm just gonna puss out and not make a decision.

EDIT 18-Apr-2014: Note review date; add blockquote & spoiler tags re: blurb

Posted 12-Sept-2012: Deceptive and misleading...

I am disgusted and embarrassed to admit that I thought the blurb interesting-but-wacky enough to download when available as a Kindle freebie. But I'll suck it up so that no one else has the same experience, whether for free or not.

WARNING: This particular product is not a romance; there is no sex, no seduction in any form but RAPE. AND MORE RAPE. CONTINUAL RAPE.

Yes, I used caps. Why? Because I want potential buyers to know this upfront. While I firmly believe people can read whatever they wish, that choice should be based on truth, not deception. The author should have been as honest about the repeated rapes as she was about the violence.

(EDIT/ADD: And no, not because I have anything against rape in books (please... P.L. Nunn's Bloodraven is one of my all-time favs. Just didn't expect it in this "book". And if trying to be a non-con/"dark" read, then it failed that as well.)

I am beyond PO'd that I got suckered into reading this, and then kept hoping that with the next page, the story would do a 180 and the off-beat romance would start (not). Like some of the others, I downloaded this after reading the blurb, which is buried somewhere within the excerpt, so allow me:

So I thought, "Hmmm, interesting twist—a bit wacked, but interesting so why not?" Also, the "warning" has such a cutesy, tongue-in-cheek tone, doesn't it?

Here's "why not". This product is not part of a series; IT'S A SERIAL. I won't waste my time explaining the difference. The "hero" says maybe all of 5 words until just before he rapes her anally. (And yeah, I wrote the word--why not when some of the erotica listed here contain it in their "warning"?) No sparks flew between them, unless you count the times he stared at her while she quaked in fear.

The FBI? Nope, sorry—huge no show for me, must have had car trouble. For that matter, where was the romance? Because I got the tragedy. And if I ever had the misfortune to experience such "scorching sex scenes", then I'll definitely be up at night.

It's clear from some other reviews that people didn't read the same book (because this was NOT 449 pages). So I can only presume that the recent change resulted in different versions. I wonder if the formatting got screwed up then? Because the formatting was crap for my download and ended at Location 3040, so I ran a macro and voilà!... I then got 70 pages/Location 1071. So 2/3 of NOTHING got stripped out.

I'm sorry but who indents to 1/4 of a Kindle screen? And at this day and age, are consistent paragraphs for straight text so difficult that several sentences would start in the middle of my screen? Even a manual typewriter had a set Tab key! Finally, how does "Chapter Three" end up in the middle somewhere but there's no other chapter headings?

The truly sad thing about all this? Crap formatting, grammar and punctuation (and I mean to the point that I had to pause and mentally construct some sentences to get the gist) and misleading blurb aside, the storyline concept was good and had such potential! In fact, the beginning was creatively attention-grabbing and the first half was not bad.

Enough. Like the heroine, I need to take another hot shower and scrub real hard.

Three words...REMOVE FROM DEVICE...I finished reading this story last night at 9:32 p.m. and before the clock tripped 9:33 p.m. it was gone from my Kindle forever. I am not even going to rate it, because I honesty don't know what to put.

So what did I like? I'll have to come back to this one...I can't think of anything right now.

So what did I not like? First, the story takes place in Mexico so many main characters do not speak English. So it was a struggle for me to work through the "broken English" and determine if it was an error or was it supposed to be written that way.

Okay now, before I go on...I'm going to add spoilers. The kind of spoilers that tell you that Miss Scarlet did it, in the kitchen with the candlestick...so if you want to read this book and be surprised, shocked, pissed...then stop here and do NOT read the next section.

So overall, the one thing the book did was get a response from me. Seriously, if my Kindle warranty would have covered it, I would have flung the thing across the room and jumped on it for a while!

I don't discourage anyone from reading this, but it just wasn't for me.

5 "farking" awesome stars!

(This review covers all four books)

It's not every day you read a book about violence, abuse, rape, drugs, bunch of criminals and you can laugh your ass off. And when the FBI makes appearence things become really interesting. But after all it's an incredibly beautiful love story, modern version of the Beauty and the Beast.

What I loved most was the writing style and dialogues, their mexican-english was "farking" awesome! And the characters - crazy, nuts - all of them! They were so funny, I adored every single one of them. I even enjoyed Tongue, whos trademark foreplay was black eye, at one moment. The book just wouldn't be complete without him.

There is only one negative thing to say - the cover (and maybe the title - simple "Gringa" will do). There were also some punctuation errors and typos, but I was able to overlook them. The story itself was just so good. It was very emotional and I really enjoyed it.

I got this book free on Amazon so I was skeptical. The typos irritated me but the story kept me reading.
The violence and sex scenes were intense but was a necessary part of the story.
Amazing series. Loved all four books and will definitely read anything this author puts out.
Highly recommended only ...if you can stand the foul language, rape scenes, violence and sex.

Dark and brutal, one woman’s quest for survival by any means will take one down a path of jagged glass, each step uncomfortably painful and gut slashing. Diablo and his minions are vile, evil and abusive, their greatest weapons, fear and domination. They take what they want, when they want it, including Payton, an American on vacation who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. To Diablo, women are toys to be played with and tossed away when he is finished, yet so many of his captives seem to have some strange respect for him, or is it a more understandable fear?

Payton’s only plan? Survive, block out the pain, humiliation and brutal force used on her. Dark humor, defiance and finally a façade of acquiescence are her only defenses. What her future holds is anyone’s guess, but Diablo figures to play a big part. Will the prey turn tables on the hunter?

Right out of the gate, I have to say, this novella will not be for everyone, even the strong of stomach may cringe at the dehumanizing brutality towards women. But one must also note the inner strength of those who must endure this life. Eve Rabi is not writing a bedtime story here, unless you enjoy nightmares. Gringa – In the Clutches of a Ruthless Drug Lord is dark, short and filled with flawed characters, but there brief moments of dark humor that take some of the edge off. Ms. Rabi has sugar-coated nothing, with dramatic and raw scenes, dialogue that feels like a rasping tool on your mind and a perpetual feeling of, wanted to read and run away at the same time. That, if nothing else is the sign of an author connecting and evoking emotions from her readers. Do I wonder where this is going? Yes. Am I afraid of where this may go? Definitely. Will I pick up the next in the series? Yep, someday, if only to see what happens next. Truth be told, I put it down 2 times before continuing on.

I am not sure if I was supposed to take this book seriously but there is really no way that I can. This is more like a parody of evil man kidnaps girl. There is no romance but I can see it happening. Diablo has the potential to be evil but I don't think he wants to be so he loses points. Lol There is not a HEA because there are more books in the series. It is a 'cliffhanger'. No award winning writing on this one.Yup, I am reading Book 2.

Sidenote, this is a short book but is has over 15000 locations. Somehow, the spacing still goes quickly.

Addictive reading.

While having kindle tidy session I found this series it must be two years since I read it, back before I starting reviewing I figured I'd left it on my kindle assuming I'd re-read it at some point, so I did and I have to say I enjoyed it more this time, obviously I must have liked it originally since I bought the series but I've appreciated the humour more this time.
Payton is twenty-one she's holidaying in Mexico and she has the kind of family you're just glad isn't yours. The book starts with her being shot and thrown over a cliff in to the sea, unusual start to a romance I must admit, she obviously survives otherwise it would be a very short series and I have to say my favourite bit is where three mouths later she returns to the village of Siempre wearing a white dress, kids start screaming and she hopes they don't try to drive a stake through her heart, yes, it's that kind of humour.
Diablo returns to finish the job and once you meet his family Payton's no longer seem that bad and she's had enough, she's done, she's not taking any more shit from anyone.
Like I said earlier I've enjoyed it more this time, I've certainly found it a lot funnier.

Every thing about this series is so wrong. Yet, I was completely hooked. I'm ashamed of myself for liking it so much... But, fuck me... I really did. And I can't explain why. I just couldn't put it down. I got very pissed off (especially at the end) but, ugh! I did. I liked it. Ack! I'm going to hang my head in shame now.

I was not expecting the sarcastic humor mixed with an interesting storyline.
Payton finds herself shot, thrown of a cliff and left to die. She survived the shooting only to find herself back in front of her attempted killer, Diablo.
This story was funny as well as interesting.

"Gringa- In the Clutches of a Ruthless Drug Lord" is not your occasional sweet romance. If you're looking for one, I suggest that you put this down and find another. But if you're not averse to capture bonding, rape, vulgarity, sex and drugs, then by all means read on. "Gringa" is a smart and crude rendition of "Beauty and the Beast". It's an adult mini-series that traces the experiences of a woman who willingly barters herself in exchange for the lives of villagers to- you guessed it- a drug lord. Yes, she is a strong, feisty, foul mouthed character that stands up to an equally dominant man, which makes the story quite exciting. While I found the the drug lord to be revolting in the first instance, I began to empathise with him towards the end of the story. Rabi leaves the story at such a point where you would be keen to learn more of what would become of the relationship between 'Gringa' and the drug lord. I enjoyed reading "Gringa" and would definitely be picking up the next book in the series.

'Gringa, Vol. #1' was a sexy, wild read--fast, very visual and wild bookish romp. Loved the pacing, characters/characterization, especially the heroine, and the sassy, often smart-*ss, dialogue. Extremely visual, I could see it as a film (or television series). I really loved the conflicted and complex main character; she is oh, so strong and sassy, yet vulnerable. I read it on Kindle and the pace, dynamic action, seamy, often entirely hilarious, and very entertaining dialogue, made for the perfect forget about reality read. I liked the length; I appreciate a fast-paced serial novelette. I'm really looking forward to the next sexy, spicy, dark racy read and have already bought 'Gringa - In the Clutches of a Ruthless Drug-Lord Book 2' (Gringa Series) by Eve Rabi. I am very interested to see if the dark and disturbing, yet sexy, strong, Diablo and the blonde Payton end up together.

This was raw, gritty, and a bit humorous. I enjoyed it immensely. Diablo is one mean Mexican drug lord and Payton, poor Payton, even in death she cannot escape him. This is definitely one that made me immediately want to pick up the sequel. Unfortunately, even as quickly as I one-clicked the next in the series, I just couldn't give it five stars. While I understand why the Mexicans in the story spoke in broken english, Peyton had no such excuse, and her excessive use of the word, "eh" was aggravating (along with a few editing problems, for me to knock it down a rating). Still, an enjoyable, dark read that tempts you with a bit of a cliffhanger.

4/1/2013:

Another unbelievable occurrence with respect to Amazon and authors.

This book was originally sold on Amazon - complete. Recently, customers who had this book in their libraries were notified by Amazon that there was an available update. No problem - usually.

Seems like the book was split into 4 parts by the author, and when you 'updated' your copy, 3/4 of the book was eliminated - forcing you to repurchase the other 'parts' if you actually were motivated to reread this.

See comments for further discussion.

He’s a ruthless, drug-lord who kills at the slightest provocation; she’s a foul-mouth, twenty-one year old who takes crap from no one. Put them together and watch the sparks fly.
And fists.
Add their greedy, backstabbing, amoral families to the mix and you have mayhem.
Add the FBI to the mayhem and you have tragedy.
A modern–day, love story that will have you laughing, crying and wanting more!

Great book. I would actually like to give it 5 stars but something's are far fetched but did not keep me from enjoying the book. It is bat sh@t crazy and has some jerry springer moments but it was a wild and interesting ride. This is mildly dark. But can still be upsetting to some readers.

Speechless!

This is the first book I've read by Eve Rabi, and so I had no idea what to expect. In spite of myself, I couldn't stop reading, though it could have used a little more character development, and some of the storyline was pretty unbelievable!

That being said, there was something about it that just held my interest, to the point that when I came to the end of the book, (though in my defense, it WAS a cliffhanger! lol) I had to get the next installment and continue reading!

It has some humor, sarcasm, murder, gore, rape, and with all of that, obviously some bad language, but for whatever reason I was compelled to keep reading. So, yes, I enjoyed the book, except the cliffhanger, but hopefully I won't be left hanging with book 2!

Okay. I want to review all four books in this series in one review since the entire story spans all four books. These are full books, not novellas, with each book a little longer than the last. However, no matter how many pages, the book reads quickly, because you can't put it down.

Gringa- In the Clutches of a Ruthless Drug Lord is the story of Payton who, while on a family vacation in Mexico, is shot by Diablo, a ruthless drug lord. After he shoots her, he throws her off of a cliff and into the sea. Well, she survives because, well, it would be a pretty short story if she didn't. Payton is very likable, her family, not so much.

When Payton returns to the village, she encounters her family. They are shocked, but not terribly excited by her return. The day of her return, she encounters Diablo again. He is surprised that she is alive, and she is pissed for obvious reasons. Feeling she has nothing to lose, Payton gets in his face and tells him off. Diablo threatens to burn down the village if Payton does not return to his home with him and his HORRIBLE family. After hearing the pleas of the people in the village, she decides to go with him.

After returning to his home, she is ignored by Diablo during dinner, and his "mother," who is a total bitch from hell, and his "sister," who we soon discover he is sleeping with, make fun of her and threaten her. As she is getting ready for bed that night, Diablo enters her room and has sex with her against her will. Over the next few nights he does the same, and she just lays there and blocks it out.

While swimming at the rock pool, she is confronted by thirteen FBI agents and their guns. They persuade her to meet with them the following day. She tells Diablo she wants a massage, so he sends her (with one of his men) into town. While the guard waits, she meets with FBI agents Depp and Grey. They talk her into planting listening devices in Diablo's home and getting close to him so that he will talk about certain crimes that he has committed.

When she returns, she decides to butter him up, so she dresses sexy and attends dinner with "the family." Diablo is unable to take his eyes off of her, and she decides to go to her room and prepare for his next visit. While getting ready for bed, Diablo barges in and rips her clothes off. Then, he... well, it's not good. After this incident, she withdraws, and he notices.

At this point, I will only touch on the important events in the story. Since I am reviewing more than one book in this review, I don't want to go into too much detail with the rest of the story, as that would spoil the first three of the four novels.

After Diablo and Payton have a violent confrontation at dinner one night, EVERYTHING changes.

Payton learns that his real name is Diago, and what she believes about him is not true, or at least, there are reasons why he is the man he is at this time in the story.

They slowly form a bond, and even though she is still working with the FBI, she feels guilty. She finally gets him to open up about the specific crimes the federal agents wanted to hear about, but she is not wearing her listening device.

Eventually, this story turns into a shit storm of activity that will stress out the reader, if that particular reader happens to be emotionally involved in the goings-on of the characters.

Told from Payton's POV, the narration is hilarious and real. I fell in love with Payton in the first chapter. There are a handful of lovable characters and more than a handful of characters the reader will love to hate.

The Gringa books are funny, refreshing, entertaining, and sweet. I wasn't expecting too much from the first book. I had never heard of the books or the author. I was sucked in, and after the sort of cliffhanger at the end of the first book, I had to see this story through to the end.

I recommend this series to anyone wanting to read something new and refreshing. I don't consider this a book about a woman with Stockholm Syndrome at all. It does not seem like that when reading it. I consider this a love story about a young woman who finds out just how strong she is and a man who needs real love in the worst way.

Hold onto your sombreros for a wild ride!

I was completely bowled over by the Gringa series of books. The tale put me through the emotional wringer, but oh what a truly amazing love story! I understand why it was an Amazon best seller last year. Although it contains violence, some of it sexual, murder, drug references and profanities, it also has laugh out loud humour, tender scenes and characters I grew to love, despite their faults. It is a compelling and unforgettable read.

In Gringa, Payton, a young American, is vacationing in Mexico when she is mistaken for a spy and shot by Diablo, the local drug lord and then, to ensure that she does not survive, he throws her over a cliff into the sea. However, Payton survives, nursed back to health by two locals. She returns to the village to ensure that her family is safe, intending to return to the US. Unfortunately Diablo reappears, threatening the villagers with death if she does not agree to become ‘his woman.’ Payton agrees to his blackmail to save innocent lives and returns with him to his home.

Many have likened Gringa to Beauty and the Beast, but it also has elements of Alice falling down the rabbit hole and entering an alternative reality of larger than life characters: Diablo, the terrifying, tattooed and pierced drug lord; Christa, his sadistic mother; his sister Santana, with whom he appears to have improper relations, and a posse of violent outlaws. There is also Payton’s own dysfunctional family, comprising her bitchy and selfish stepmother Elaine and step-sister Paris, her weak father, Austin her brother-in-law, whom Paris stole from Payton, and baby Liam, her nephew.

In this, book 1 in the series,Diablo subjects Payton to physical abuse, including rape and she also witnesses violence, drunken behaviour, drug taking and profanities. Christa and Santana resent and despise her, although fortunately Payton benefits from Diablo’s protection. Servants Rosa and Maria become her confidants as she struggles to accept her situation. Even at this stage in the tale, however, there is still humour in the madness, much of it dark, such as Payton’s thoughts when Diablo makes his nocturnal visits, but some of it light, such as the chattering and antics of the Maria and Rosa.

You will need to read the other books in the series to find out what happens next, but I can tell you that they are all worth the read! They are not all as dark as this first book, although there are certainly some dark moments before the tale reaches its conclusion after many twists and turns. One of my best reads ever. Eve Rabi is an amazing author, spinning imaginative tales which touch on so many human emotions.

2 1/2 stars really but I rounded up because there's enough here to intrigue me and keep me reading.

This review contains minor spoilers.
I don't exactly know what to make of Gringa; it deals with serious subject matter to say the least - but the writing style is tongue in cheek - so it comes across like a politically incorrect B movie - the kind that would develop a cult following - like "Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!" or "The Rocky Horror Picture Show". Which is why - despite my self appointed title of "the probability police" - I was able to keep reading even after the opening scene where the heroine Payton is shot 3 times in the chest at close range with a 9 mm pistol AND thrown off a cliff and not only manages to survive but does so without the intervention of a level 1 trauma center. Luckily for Payton, that bullet apparently did not blow out the back of her chest because she was able to recuperate in a tepee in the mountains of Mexico with some sort of opium administering "nurse" and her hygienic partner who spits all over the place.

The writing style is very fast paced and it makes the story seem almost surreal. Within 1 paragraph Payton is reunited with her family, wanting a steak, having a steak, asking for butter and gagging on her steak after spending months with her vegetarian caregivers. If felt like being caught in a whirlwind. The writing style, lack of detail and use of humor kept me from taking it too seriously - so the serious subject matter didn't pack the punch it could have if handled differently - which I'm assuming was intended.

I got a kick out of the arguing, pronoun abusing maids. Diablo is an interesting character. After deciding he wants a relationship with Payton that doesn't involve her being dead - he actually treats her very well - except for the rapes of course; but then you sort of get the impression that he doesn't entirely "get" that it's rape either. He seems to think that since she agreed to be "his woman" that it goes with the territory. The fact that the agreement was brought about under duress with threats of death not only to Payton but to the population of an entire village, including Payton's family - also seems to elude him.

I'm definitley entertained and curious enough to keep reading.

While in vacation in Mexico with her family, Payton is mistakenly believed to be a spy by a crazy druglord. That`s bad. Then Things get worse, and worse.

I started out loving the protagonist, Payton. She`s got a big mouth and a Murphys Law outlook on life. But!! To call this a modern day love story!!? Who the hell came up with that idea? Have you mixed up you`r books? Are you insane? DAMN! Thats crazy! If this is a love story let me tell you how these young lovers met. He shoots her 3 times in the chest, throws her off a cliff into the ocean and then rapes her over and over again when she survives... Must be true love I tell ya!

There are some hilarious secondary characters in this book. Teacher turned crazy hermit and the two girls at the ranch with theire crazy English, loved that!

I saw a review that said this book had great sex scenes!? LOOOOL! That is so, so not true! There are no sex scenes in this book, only short rape scenes. No fancy rapes either, just standardized raping in this book.
(I`m sorry if I offend anyone by saying this, if you do not care to read about rape, then do not read this book, because you will be offended, mostly because of the flippant way it`s done.. Like it`s nothing)

I can`t quite wrap my head around this one, `cause I like Peyton, but the bad guy/"loveinterest" (giggles and rolles eyes) DIABLO(hey, it fits!), looks like a coconut with a fucked up afro according to Peyton. Damn, but she`s funny.

After being raped over and over she for some inexplicable reason stops being funny. Go figure! I`m hoping she`s going to perk up now in the second installment. I can`t take this seriously because it`s pretty sic, so I`m just going to roll with it. Hoping for more LOL`s and less rape.

That should be the title of this book btw: LOL`s and rape, ho ho ho.
