Ryohgo Narita (成田 良悟, Narita Ryōgo) is a Japanese light novelist. He won the Gold Prize in the 9th Dengeki Novel Prize for Baccano!, which was made into a TV anime in 2007.[1] His series Durarara!! was also made into a TV anime, which began airing January 2010
There are two traits found in most of Narita's works: * Narita writes extremely fast, one volume a month if he wishes - with tons of spelling errors and missing words as a tradeoff. The editors like to leave them sometimes just for fun, though. * His work titles often have an exclamation mark at the end (i.e. Baccano!, Vamp!, Durarara!!, etc.).
Ah, light novels. They’re always a quick read but even Durarara!! one of my favourite stories, has begun to frustrate me with how little it thinks of its readers. We got the same copy pasted paragraph about Celty’s character as we’ve have in the past two novels at least and that is my biggest complaint about this book. Celty is one of the main characters, I don’t need nearly a page explaining that she isn’t human, if I don’t know by now leave me behind.
It’s clear that the author is sort of moving the book along the way that the fans want at this point. He mentions in the afterword that he wants to tie up the story even though he originally intended to give several characters their own novels & arcs before. This means that several of the newer characters are left feeling pointless and underdeveloped, but still get enough pages devoted to them that they feel like a waste of time.
The chatroom is not used NEARLY enough. I understand that most of the characters have moved away from it but it was the gimmick that made Durarara!! unique in the first place. There’s no reason it should be used so little even if at this point its mostly the newer cast frequenting it.
We get a lot of boring Anri and Saika stuff this volume, which I’m not a fan of. I’m sure Anri has plenty of lovers though so that will be great for them. It just sort of dragged for me, I consider her one of the weakest characters who has very little motivation or real connections. The book always talks about her amazing relationship with Mikado and Masaomi but honestly the three have very minimal chemistry or interest.
The novel is clearly setting up for it’s final arc, starting a lot of threads to be tied up and completed. I have no doubt that volumes 12 and 13 will be full of action and conclusions. Which means not a lot happens in this book until the very end when it’s clear that some big events are being set in motion.
I’m excited to be nearing the end of the series after being invested for nearly a year. Izaya and Shizuo continue to be the characters with the most exciting development and arcs in my opinion so I hope to see more of them. I know Izaya went on to get a spin-off series but I’m not entirely certain if I’ll pick that up just yet.
Till the middle of this book the story just went along with some boring glimpses into Anri's psyche and her mental process. Then came the 1vs1 battle between Kida and Chikage, and the battle got top off with the emergence of Rann Izumi's gang. That got me all hyped up. But no, it's not the end yet. We have yet to see true firework. The first few sparks have been fired up, and two bigger-than-normal sparks could lead to two ultra-destructive explosions, First spark is Shizuo's liberation, and that means...I'm sure you know...Izaya won't live to see light the next day. The second spark is...omg...Kujiragi KISSED Shinra, and I don't know how thirsty she is for him-be it out of love or of obligation as a Saika holder-but if she dares to kiss him in front of Celty she is guaranteed to face a battle bordered on life and death. It seems all sparks will blow up at once at the next volume. I can't be more hyped up at this moment.
It wasn’t bad, but it mostly sets up the ending of Durarara!! which will consist of the next 2 volumes. After reading this one, you’ll be eagerly awaiting volume 12 in order to get some answers.
