I would recommend The Simple Art of Perfect Baking by Flo Braker, who explains the process baking from the perspective of a home baker, who wants to learn the basics of baking (from pound cake to pie crusts and tarts), then go on to tackle more detailed and spectacular creations.

I think Flo and I have different definitions of simple. However, if I were ever hoping to be on a baking show I'd for sure study this cookbook!

Seriously..I bought this book because of the cover :-)..
If you see it clearly, the picture on the cover is really what the perfect devil food cake should be.
And at that time, I was looking for the recipe for the ultimate devil food cake.
Unfortunately, till now I haven't got time to try the devil food cake recipe on this book.(Yes, I'm a very busy woman..haha!)
Oh, and I little bit disappointed with the book because it's lack of pictures. :-(
Well, ok it's a baking book not a photography book. But it's supposed to show you the result of the cake. Am i right?????
However, the direction on how to make the cake in each recipe is well written and very clear. So, I think any baker would like this book
