Il senso di disagio e di vaga inquietudine, se non addirittura di irritazione, che quasi tutti proviamo guardando nelle gabbie dei giardini zoologici le grandi scimmie antropomorfe - gorilla, scimpanzè, orangutan - ha probabilmente ispirato questa classica "avventura nel tempo" che vede un gruppo di esseri umani sperduti in una società completamente "scimmiesca". Ma se lo spirito del romanzo e le peripezie dei suoi protagonisti sembrano appartenere al genere avventuroso, il loro significato è in realtà di bruciante satira, e a spese non del gorilla, ma dell'Homo Sapiens.

Lyon Sprague de Camp was an American author of science fiction, fantasy and non-fiction literature. In a career spanning 60 years, he wrote over 100 books, both novels and works of non-fiction, including biographies of other fantasy authors. He was a major figure in science fiction in the 1930s and 1940s.

Strikingly original for having been written in 1950. A bus load of various people fall into a sinkhole in Ohio and wake up millions of years later.

Pierre Boulle, the author of Planet of the Apes, pilfered a lot of ideas from this book. He then added a preaching layer to his books that no one needed (and that the latest Planets of the Apes movie trilogy almost completely got rid of - thank you, Hollywood, for your allergy to thinking!!).

This one is better. Pure and fun SF adventure.

Another science fiction novel I read a long time ago that I don't remember much about except for liking it. 25 people sleep 1,000,000 years and awake to find a very different world, in which evolution has done some strange things.

L'idea di partenza era intrigante, gli elementi per fare qualcosa di corale ed epico c'erano tutti, ma si riduce a 2-3 personaggi ben caratterizzati e il resto tutti cartonati!
Un gruppo di viaggiatori, diviso tra scienziati di varie discipline, commercianti e turisti, durante un incidente sul loro bus, si ritrova accidentalmente esposto ad un gas capace di causare una sorta di stasi biologica che dura un milione di anni, e quando escono dalla galleria in cui l'incidente era avvenuto, scoprono quanto sia cambiato il mondo intorno a loro, facendone gli ultimi rappresentanti di una specie estinta...
De Camp si impegna come può, e si vede, nel cercare quel minimo di veridicità, ma questo libro fu scritto nel 1939, non gli si potevano chiedere conoscenze che, anche a livello enciclopedico, avrebbero richiesto decenni di altre scoperte, dalla geologia all'evoluzionismo. Diamine, mancavano ancora due anni all'ingresso dell'America nella seconda guerra mondiale e l'arma nucleare era un'idea esotica.
E' un romanzo avventuroso, la cui vera pecca è l'essere troppo breve. Qui, il paragone con "The Architect of Sleep", in cui il protagonista si trova in un mondo dominato da procioni evoluti, è impietoso. "Architect" punta tantissimo sul worldbuilding e lo fa guidandoci scoperta dopo scoperta in un volume lungo. Qui, è tutto affrettato, tutto spiegato come in una visita al museo, privo di emozione; è invecchiato male perché all'epoca l'idea dei gorilla (e non solo loro) eredi del mondo era qualcosa al limite del fantasy, e bastava l'idea a giustificare i difetti della storia e la mancanza di caratterizzazione di quasi tutto il cast umano.
qui non si percepisce l''alienità' delle civiltà degli animali evoluti, dobbiamo prendere per buona la parola di un paio dei gorilla e gli stessi membri delle altre specie sono giusto dei villain generici, e il protagonista ha addosso un plot armor imbarazzante.

I've had a copy of this novel for at least twenty years and finally decided to read the thing. It's an OK read, but seems rather stiff, and not particularly imaginative in 2026.

In einem Tunnel eingeschlossen und der Einwirkung eines neuartigen, tiefschlaferzeugenden Gases ausgesetzt, überleben die Insassen eines Linienbusses unentdeckt den Zeitraum einer halben Ewigkeit. Als diese Menschen - eine bunt zusammengewürfelte Schar von Männern und Frauen - schließlich erwachen und an das Licht der Sonne treten, gibt es die Welt, die sie kennen, längst nicht mehr. Die Natur hat sich weitgehend verändert, und die Erde ist menschenleer. Jetzt wird die Welt von Wesen beherrscht, die längst das Erbe der Menschheit angetreten haben.

Ein Vorläufer von "Der Planet der Affen", unterschiedliche Storys, aber das Thema ist das Gleiche und ich bin kein wirklicher Fan von beiden. Ausserdem ist der Roman aus medizinisch-wissenschaftlicher und logischer Sicht kompletter Quatsch. Man schnüffelt also ein bisschen Gas und schläft dann 1 Million Jahre lang ohne Wasser- oder Nahrungsversorgung, auch dürfte es ein kleines Problem mit dem Sauerstoff in dem Tunnel geben. Von geologischer Seite her wollen wir das Ganze mal gar nicht erst betrachten. Knappe 2 Sterne, aber auch nur weil ich Rieseneichhörnchen und Biberoide (lol) mag.

Un autobus carico di gente resta bloccato, da un crollo, in una galleria. Uno dei viaggiatori era uno scienziato che portava con se un gas sperimentale, il cui involucro si rompe. Tutti cadono in una specie di sospensione vitale e si risveglieranno svariati millenni più tardi in una Terra ben diversa da quella che ricordavano, nella quale i Gorilla sono i principali animali intelligenti.

Un romanzo che anticipa di diversi anni Il Pianeta delle Scimmie e che è molto meno pessimista, e forse anche per questo, meno interessante.
