Citrus Leahy is having a really bad day. First she's late to school. Then she runs into the girl who drives her nuts because she always calls her Orange instead of her name. To cap it all off, when Citrus finally makes it to class, she sees herself already inside. Wait. What? Citrus Leahy has a doppelganger! It's probably aliens taking over the world and her life has just turned totally upside down. Goodbye, normal. Hello, paranormal! Luckily, her crush Aedan has the exact same problem!
MILDA HARRIS has a dog named after a piece of candy (Licorice), was once hit by a tree (seriously), and wears hot pink sunglasses (why not?). She is the young adult author of Doppelganger, Adventures in Funeral Crashing, Adventures of a Graveyard Girl, The New Girl Who Found A Dead Body, and Connected: A Paranormal Romance. She also works in production on television shows like Austin & Ally, Hannah Montana, and That's So Raven.
Mother effer!!! Another effing cliffhanger book!!!! Okay, I’m a sucker for them but seriously, going into this book I was NOT expecting that at all! It was a very nice surprise.
Now on about the book. Citrus, weird name by the way, is your average teen who goes to school, gets her homework done and likes to read during her free time. She flies by under the radar, doesn’t want to get any unwanted attention. Until one morning nothing is the same, not even her. First off she wakes up late which she’s never done but chocks that off to staying up too late to finish a book. She gets to school during her second period only to find out that she’s already attended her first period. What??? what is going on? Then to her horror she sees herself in class! The girl may be wearing different clothes but its her. Before anyone can see her through the glass she backs up only to run into her long time crush Aedan. Another surprise…..there’s another Aedan in class. He tells he what happened to him. How he couldn’t sleep and he went for a run early in the morning only to come back home to find himself already at the table eating breakfast. He followed his double to school and has hidden from him.
Things are getting really weird and its freaking her out. Neither one of them want to be seen by their doppelganger so they decide to leave school. Now what? They decide they need to find out if their friends are okay. Citrus calls Olivia her best friend only to be disappointed because its not her. Now she’s worried about her friend. Where is she? What has happened to her? Aedan calls one of his friends and thinks Dan is the real deal. So they head back to school to rescue him. Except he’s not the real deal! Something weird is going on and they cant seem to get any footing.
They decide that the doppelganger Citrus would be the easiest target. They would snatch her up and see what these doppelgangers have done to the others. None of their plans go their way. They run into the doppel-Olivia. She thinks they are the doppelgangers and wants to leave with them. Aedan makes up an excuse for Citrus to get away. She cant believe he is sacrificing himself. She needs to make sure to find out where they are going so she can help him.
Citrus is now hiding in the woods by the abandon home that is now the headquarters of the doppelgangers. She is too far from the house to know what is going on so she gets closer. She sees that her doppelganger is the leader of the pack. She is trying to get information out of Aedan and when he doesn’t cooperate she breaks his leg. The real Citrus thinks she’s helping out by drawing attention to herself.
The rescue is a bust and she’s strapped down while being blooded. That’s what the doppelgangers feed off of, their real persons blood. Soon she passes out and when she awakes she in a room with the real Olivia and the others that have been cloned. She sees Aedan and runs to him only to have him shun her. He has no idea who she is. Reality sets in and its not to her liking at all. It cant be. The Aedan she knows isn’t the doppel-Aedan, is he????
Citrus inner monologue got really annoying real quick but overall I really enjoyed this book. Can wait for book 2!
I was given a copy of this book from the publishers via NetGalley, in return for an honest review.
"Doppelganger" has been on my wish list ever since I first saw it on Goodreads a year ago. The idea sounded promising and as soon as I saw it posted on NetGalley, I requested it.
I cannot even fathom what it would be like to run into myself. But it seemed like the reactions by the characters in this story were pretty accurate. I could imagine myself freaking out just as Citrus did. I could imagine the completely RANDOM thoughts that were going through her mind, as being pretty close to what I'd be thinking. It made me feel like the characters were real. There are a lot of teen/young adult books out, and it seems like the characters are just cut from a mold. They are all beautiful, amazing, popular (or best friend to the populars) and flawless. This story seemed to really run the gambit of normal teens. And they didn't always have the answers. It was amazing in that aspect.
Another plus that I don't see too often in recent books, I was actually surprised by "the twist." I absolutely didn't see it coming! And it wasn't a twist that comes at you out of the blue or is so unbelievable that it doesn't belong in the story. (And yes, I do realize that it's a sci-fi book in which the unbelievable happens...) It was just the right amount of twist for the story.
Of course, the book was not flawless. I don't know how many reviews I have written with this same complaint. End the story line when you end the book! It's ok to write a series, and it's ok to have cliff-hangers, just don't stop a book mid-scene. Doppelganger is kind of in the gray area for me with this. It does stop mid-adventure, but it's not like a lot of other books that are out right now, that just stop mid thought. At least this one ended at a good point in their adventure. It's almost like ending a Shakespearean play after an act, and you have to go buy another play to find out what happens. But I guess this is better than ending the play at the end of a scene!
Other than me not liking how the ending was done for this book, I will be keeping my eyes out for the rest of the series. I'm very interested to see what happens to Citrus and the gang. Doppelgangers gets a solid 4 stars from me!
Citrus was a good girl with good grades. she loved to read and never did something bad. but one day, she woke up late, which was very unusual for her. she rushed to school, just in time for her test in third period before she noticed herself already sitting inside the classroom. the girl looked completely like her, even dressed and act like her, but there were something off about her. before she was able to decide whether to confront her doppelganger or to run away, she met Aedan, her long time crush, who also found himself in the exact situation. the duo decided to rescue those they could and find out what the doppelgangers were after.
I received a free e-book from the author in exchange for a review. the moment I started reading the book, despite how the words tend to run over one another, I couldn’t put it down. it was absolutely addictive! Citrus was an average girl whose life suddenly seemed so much more adventurous after the danger started. she was so in luck when her crush was the other person who realized the truth and decided to stay together for safety measures. the plot was such a crazy idea and I was so in love with it! the twists only added to the deliciousness of it. I was very pleased to have the second installment in my possession already when I reached the end of the book, especially when it stopped with such a huge cliffhanger.
Aww, I really enjoyed the book. It's not literary genius, but it is an enjoyable time waster. When reading the blurb for this book, the movie Invasion of the Body Snatchers immediately comes to mind. You know, if it was really girly. Doppelganger starts out with Citrus Leahy, ordinary bookworm, arrives late at school to find that she is already there. Naturally, she freaks out, but then she starts rambling. She rambled a lot. I'm serious, it got sorta annoying, but I get it, shes freaking out. Citrus actually mentions a couple of times that her brain is acting weird. But then, her classmate finds her and they go on a wild ride to find out who their doubles are and what they want. Its fast paced and cute, with some tweeny romance mixed in. And plus, the love interest is totally sweet. If I had a daughter, I wouldn't mind letting her read this. There is nothing inappropriate about this besides the scary aspect of freaky aliens trying to take over our lives. And man, I normally pick up every big reveal at least twenty pages before it happens, but his totally caught me by surprise. It hit me right in the face and left me shouting, "NOOO, IT CANT BE!" And now I am looking for the sequel. Stupid cliffhanger. Review copy.
This is a fun little book. A YA paranormal romance/maybe sci-fi? Hard to place since we don't know what the doppelgangers are. Are they aliens? Are they vampires? We don't know yet! This book follows our heroine, Citrus, a high school girl whose biggest worry to date was to keep her nose out of a book long enough to study for a test. Then the day comes that she is late to school, and while walking into class, realizes she is already sitting in a seat taking the test. Her only consolation is that the cutest boy in school is having the same moment she is. What follows is their adventure to free their friends, discover what is going on and maybe try to escape the "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" moment they are having.
This book is completely harmless. We have a budding romance, teen angst, weird situations and an introverted teen who keeps an inward monologue going through all her surprises. It was quick, likable and easy to read. It ends with a cliffhanger and a lead into the next book. I can recommend it to lovers of paranormal romance and the YA genre. It is safe for all teens. I will read the sequel!
I really enjoyed this book. It was so fast paced that you were out of breathe just trying to keep up with the action. I received this book as a R2R and boy, am I glad I did.
Citrus was just trying to have a regular normal day in her life, but that is NOT what is going to happen. It does not take very long to get involved in the action of having your double sitting in class, taking your test and the ramifications of that to hit the fan.
Citrus's voice is very believable as a high school girl, who believes she is very forgettable and uninteresting to the "popular people". She is trying to figure out a most unbelievable situation.
Who to trust? Or are you just dreaming because all of it seems to be a nightmare that you will wake up from any minute?
i hated the cliffhanger and am waiting for the next one to see what will happen with our heroine Citrus and our rag tag group of originals and what happened to Citrus's mom and why did the doppelganger help them escape?
I'm going to have to think about this one a decide how I feel. I can say, overall I liked it. If you like Milda Harris' Adventures in Funeral Crashing series, there is a good chance you will like this, too.
My main hurdle on loving this, is Citrus. No, I'm not referring to the "Annoying Orange" or some veiled weird inside joke... the main character is named Citrus. Interesting choice of name.
I received a free eBook from Milda Harris via the R2R Paranormal & Urban Fantasy Fanatics in exchange for a honest review.
In this short, first book of a series, Citrus sleeps late and when she gets to high school, sees herself already in class. She learns that she and several other students now have doppelgangers - identical look alike people who are taking their places. Together with a boy named Aedan, who also has a doppel, they try to take the doppelgangers on and find out what is going on. To be continued in the next book....
Doppelganger: an apparition or double of a living person.
Citrus Leahy is having a really bad day. She's late to school, but that's not the really bad part of her day. When she goes to class she looks in and sees that she is already there! And she's not the only one who has a body double - her crush, Aedan, also has one. What's going on? That's what Citrus intends to find out.
I loved the premise of this book, and the book lived up to my expectations for the most part. Citrus's mental monologues are a bit annoying, but if you can get past that, you will really enjoy this book. It does end with a cliffhanger, but it is a good introduction to the series. I look forward to reading book #2.
I recommend this book to my fellow fantasy lovers out there.
4/5 stars.
I received a copy of this book free of charge in exchange for my honest opinion.
I have been reading up a storm this month and loving it. No dent in the TBR list really as I added about 3 for every book 1 finished. A solid point for the, pro eternal life, debate I always hear coming up. One of the books I read recently was Doppelganger by Milda Harris thanks to NetGalley. I first clicked on this title because, I admit the idea of doppelgangers intrigues me; and the cover reminded me of something from my past and to even now it drives me crazy that I am unable to figure out what that something is. I’ll remember it at the most random time and shout it out for whoever is in the vicinity to look at me like I’ve lost my mind. Either way I was excited to receive this book for an honest review.
This book is not a brand new release. Which is great for me because that meant book 2, aptly named Doppelganger 2, was already out. So I really read both books before I could review. I had to know what happened next. Though that simply means I am now waiting for book 3. I’m focusing my review on book 1 so don’t worry about spoilers. I read through it pretty quickly, the premise is that of a girl, named Citrus, starting out a normal day, all be is a bit badly as she is running late for school. She has a run in with her least favorite person and then shows up unprepared for a test only to see herself through the door already taking the test. Trippy. Is this a dream? Is she crazy? Is it an alien invasion? As she struggles to cope and figure this mess out she finds someone else out in the hall who happens to also be taking a test inside, a guy she happens to have a huge crush on, Aedan.
The idea of the book sounded pretty good and the story moved along well enough. They say everyone has a twin somewhere in the world. What would you do if you ran into your doppelganger? Once I got over the name of the lead character, I give a lot of leeway with names but that was a new one. There was also another character constantly calling her Orange instead. It was a bit of a strange name in a present day non-dystopian novel, to wrap my head around but after the first few chapters it just blended in. She was a bit of a spaz too, which at times could be a bit repetitive but she’s a high school girl who is trying to deal with this supernatural mystery that took over her life and with her teenage girl crush issues. It made me laugh how she is able to realize her train of thought drifts on occasion and how with everything going on thinking about the cute boy beside her should not even be on her mind; which made it enduring. Honestly, I’m not sure my mind wouldn’t wonder in that mess; a way to think about something less freaky and more normal. Because let’s face it in high school what could be more normal than dealing with a crush.
If you found out a doppelganger had taken over your life and at least a handful of others, what would you do? Confront them? Run? I can’t say too much more about the plot without giving away the story. I can say that I think the author did a good job at weaving in fear, the mystery, and the unknown nicely to keep the reader engaged in the story and what happens to the characters. Clearly I enjoyed the book if as soon as I finished it I went to Amazon and bought book 2 to keep reading right away. I give it a solid 4 Stars and look forward to book 3.
If I had to describe this book in one word, it would be "ohmaigawd." Not because I personally loved it, but because that was the mood of the entire thing. There was a lot of danger throughout the course of Doppelganger- although it only felt dangerous towards the end of the book- but somehow the main character, Citrus, managed to keep this ranty high-school-preppy attitude almost the entire time. Let me explain what I mean with an excerpt. This is at the beginning of the book, so it's not much of a spoiler; it's right after she discovers she has a Doppelganger and runs away with a boy who also has one.
"He switched off the car and turned to face me. I kept my head leaned back against the seat, and my head was starting to pound. I knew I was totally going to get a monster of a pimple now, because of all the stress. Probably on my nose, and especially since I couldn't get to my facewash. Still, I tried to breathe normally and concentrate on Aedan as he spoke. I just hoped the pimple didn't show up until after Aedan and I stopped hanging out. Please oh please oh please I told myself. That would be just the thing to push me over the edge right now- dying of embarrassment. I didn't need any more stress."
In case you're wondering, almost the entire book is like this. Just previously we were talking about our doubles taking over our lives and kidnapping people- are we really going to worry about pimples right now? And about a million times during the course of this book she went off on a complete tangent that ended in "why is my brain over-thinking like this?" Why indeed.
The progression of the bond between the two main characters was as jittery as the writing. For a half of the book, they're complete strangers running from danger together with nothing other than their current situation in common, then all of a sudden he begins to show major concern and affection for her. I understand that danger can bring to people together, but there was no path between point A- strangers- and point B- in love.
70% of this book was 'meh,' but interesting enough (and kind of fun in a "I love to hate this person" type way with the narration) but the ending really picked it up. This seems to be a common theme in the books I've read lately. The ending revealed secrets, surprises, and interesting plot points that- despite my dislike for the main character and a lot of the narration- actually makes me want to read the second to see what happens.
And while we're on the narration, to be fair, it got better. Actually, Citrus had a lot of good development throughout the course of this book. She started off as a nervous wreck afraid of her own shadow, and ended up as a fairly independent woman willing to lead others to safety at her own expense and throw herself into danger for answers. In the end, I have to say I was proud of her for the steps she'd taken, and whereas she started off this book barely passing for teenage mentality, she grew into a fairly wise young adult by the end, and it was a refreshing thing to notice. I think this will also make the second more interesting, and I plan to pick it up if I ever have a chance. Overall, Doppelganger was a quick, fun read and a good way to pass the time between long books.
If Citrus is having a bad day, well, I'm definitely having a bad read. First, she keeps on blabbing. Second, the first is annoying. Lastly, she is a waste of time!
Doppelganger is written in the voice of the main character, Citrus Leahy, where she woke up in a day that is strange for her. Strange is she's late. Because she said so that she's a good girl and never gets late for school. But knew it was going to be a bad day when she woke up. How strange is that? Totally unlike her, she said. Apparently, totally dumb. Citrus went to school, getting a late slip, and seeing herself in class, answering their World History test. How could that be when she's just outside the classroom? Luckily, (yes, luckily he's character is included or I could have died reading Citrus' thoughts) Aedan Finnegan too got the same problem.
"Don't let them see you," Aedan warned, startling me out of my thoughts on fainting, by grabbing my arm and moving me out of the eye line of the students in the classroom. WHAT?!?!? Others might have enjoyed but Milda Harris wrote Doppelganger to displease me. The annoyance is exaggerated.
The word 'Doppelganger' is gravely overused. We get the point. It's practically the reason why Citrus is being an annoying Orange and runs the whole book just blabbing with her feelings on Aedan and her other crazy sentiments. (She should have remained being a good girl.) Her conflicting and contradicting emotions are beyond irritating. She would just blow you, she's crackpot!
I think Doppelganger would be better without Citrus? Ignominy. No matter, Aedan's character is one of the two reasons why I finished reading this. I like the idea of him. He's cunning, and bonus points on not knowing he's *Spoiler: not Aedan at all. Citrus calls him Doppel-Aedan.* The second reason is, I wanted to know how Citrus gets through the Doppelgangers. But this ends in suspense! Talk about surreal.
While Doppelganger is good on ending being a cliffhanger, it is still not a recommended read, especially for those who don't have much patience to characters like Citrus Leahy. Preferably, I would not read the sequel. I'm positive it's not a help.
Source: Author via Netgalley · I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Doppelganger felt like talking to a 13-year-old girl with ADHD. I realize that the character Citrus is meant to be much older than 13, but she had the mentality of a 13-year-old.
I have mixed feelings about this novel, because the first half of the novel; I am not a fan of, but it becomes pretty interesting after that. I’d probably read the second book just to find out what happens and why it is all happening, let alone my interest in the characters.
The novel starts with our avid reader, Citrus, who is never late for school but just this one time, is. The moment she gets to school things get weird; first the lady in the office erases her as attending when she comes in for a late pass. Then she finds herself in second our taking the test, she’d been so worried about. Then her crush Aedan is beside her, with the same dilemma. He’s in there taking a test too. From there the events get weirder and weirder.
One of the main things that annoyed me in this novel was Citrus and her inability to let things sink in for the first half of the novel. Then we find her fickle heart and the constant change of status on her feelings for Aedan. At the beginning she’s like I have like a half crush on him, then she claims she’s had a full blown crush on him forever, then she drops the hammer and say’s “I’m in love.” It’s been a few hours since the whole thing started.
For me she is redeemed in the end, because she stops wondering about how the doppelganger is doing on her tests and projects, and starts wondering if her friends and family are dead. She becomes realistic and slightly likeable in the end.
I believe that the author set up everything perfectly for this novel, in tone and setting anyway. Right off she lets you know it’s a YA novel with some comical and some serious parts.
The best part of this novel was the twist towards the end that I did not see coming, and yet I should have. It makes me feel stupid for not noticing before. I also like how it complicates the entire storyline; seriously at the end there are so many unsolved dilemmas, that it frustrates me. Even now I’m sitting here like, “Why??”
There’s a bad habit in this novel of focusing on things that have no importance to the storyline, or getting sidetracked in the characters thoughts about something totally irrelevant. The irrelevant thoughts could attest to the characters personality and how she is constantly side tracked by her battles in this novel. However they were annoying to read.
Can I just say, if your name is Citrus I would call you Orange too. Your parents are practically begging me to do it, so I think the nickname is well deserved.
Sixteen year-old Citrus Leahy is a total bookworm, wrapped up in reading 'The Hunger Games'. In fact, she's so absorbed in reading that shestays up late, oversleeps, and misses the bus to school, which means that she has to bike there instead.
Which means she's going to be really, incredibly late for class. Citrus shows up at the front office tired and anxious to make it to history test on time, but when she gets her hall pass to history, she sees herself in the classroom, already scratching down answers.
Aedan, one of her classmates, is also standing outside the door, watching his doppelganger take his test. Aedan and Citrus are off on a life and death investigation, trying to discover who those doppelgangers really are -- and why they want to take over their lives.
What I liked about this book: At first, I was a bit thrown off by the use of run on sentences. The grammar Nazi in me wanted to pull out a red pen and shriek. Once I let go of that first instinct, I really enjoyed the voice Harris created for Citrus Leahy. The run-on sentences are as much a part of Citrus as the crossed out sentences are a part of Juliette in 'Shatter Me'. The run on sentences capture Citrus' particular brand of neurotic, and I could almost hear here hyperventilating when she got anxious in the story.
When she's not on the verge of an anxiety attack, Citrus is a remarkably resourceful heroine. She has enough quirk and charm to be grounded, and enough spunk and determination to keep me rooting for her the whole way through.
Since I'm a sucker for supernatural/paranormal stories, I enjoyed the idea of Doppelgangers. It treads on some familiar ground (Harris even explicitly references 'The Faculty' and 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' in the story), but does so in a fresh and appealing way.
What I didn't like about this book:
Let's just say the ending is 'unresolved'. I found myself screaming 'Nononononono!' when I reached the end of the book. If you're the type of reader who likes closure, you might want to wait for the next installment to come out before diving into this book. Harris definitely left me wanting more answers.
******SPOILER ALERTS******* The nature of the Doppelgangers isn't fully understood at the end of this book. Are they aliens? Monsters? Human experimentations? Who knows? The little that Citrus does learn about the Doppelgangers doesn't give readers much to go on. ******END SPOILERS*********
Final verdict: If you're looking for a quick paranormal YA read, check this one out. It's full of twists and turns, and Harris has created a loveable heroine. I'll be checking out the sequel.
The premise of this book sounded so exciting, but unfortunately I didn't enjoy this book as much as I had hoped. The plot itself is really good and was what kept me going but the writing style and our main character was what killed the book.
First of, what kind of name is Citrus? It's a bit too special for my liking, and made me frown every time I came across it. Furthermore, Citrus is really annoying and stupid. In the beginning she keeps mentioning that: "I was the good kid". I lost count for how many times she said that. Really annoying. And then there is the part of her "distraction". I was really surprised that even though facing evil doppelgangers, and having no clue whatsoever as to what was going on, her main focus was Aedan, and how hot and cute he was. Seriously, I felt like punching her, because that is just so unrealistic. Even though she mentions it herself, I just couldn't deal with it. And her 'excuse' for it? "I hated being a romantic sometimes. It made your brain go on overdrive even when you had bigger things to think about". I mean, come on, that is really just frustrating and completely unrealistic... She was more concerned about how she looked, behaved and what Aedan would thing of her, than what was going on and her friends and family.
Another thing that really bugged me was Melissa, or Citrus' and Melissas interaction. Citrus really really hates Melissa, and Melissa is portrayed as the meanest girl ever, and the biggest bully, for one reason only, she calls Citrus Orange. Come on. That is so stupid. And then there's the time Citrus question the evil of Melissa, when they try to rescue her, because Melissa says something about being friends. "Or, well, I guess we had been semi-friends a long time considering what she said, I just hadn't realized it." I seriously have no comment on this. It makes no sense to me...
The writing style was OK, but sometimes forced and awkward, and yeah... I was curious regarding the doppelgangers, and that was what made me go on. I probably won't read the next one, even though I have a lot of unanswered questions. Citrus just annoys me too much.
First read : 2014 | I received this book from Netgallery in exchange for an honest review
This would have been a 5 star for me. But i docked a star due to the writing. Some things were repeated and at one point it seemed like the author had forgotten a line which had written earlier in the book.
That being said i really liked the book and i love how it ended on a cliff hanger. It only entices me to want to read the sequel even more.
Definitely a book i want to add to my collection of paperbacks.(When i buy it)
Second read : 2021
So I don’t normally partake in re-reads of books, mainly because I have so many still left to read. But since this and the 2nd book were on scribd I thought why not? It had been 6 years since I read this and still hadn’t read On The Run. The main question is: Have my thoughts changed since I read this. The answer is Yes and No. In 2014 I gave the book a 4 star rating, pushing onto 5 but the writing wasn’t up to my standard. Now it’s a 3, the writing is definitely not up to standard, like there is a particular moment where Harris writes that Citrus finished her pizza but then a couple lines down says that she takes a bite? There are quite a few similar things like that in the book but won’t mention them all here. Then there is the issue of characters…they’re not fleshed out…take Citrus, she’s a self certified book nerd and has a massive crush on Aedan. That’s all we know because it’s pretty much the only two things about her that kept getting repeated through out the book and we don’t really know much about the other characters. Don’t get me wrong, the idea for the book is a good one, I just feel like the writing let it down. With all this being said, I’m still going to read the 2nd book and I’m hoping that we get to see more of citrus that isn’t just her crush and bookworm status and the other characters being more fleshed out!
This started with a bang. In the first pages, we get a relatable POV character in the form of Citrus: a slightly nerdy teenage girl who loves to read YA fantasy novels. We get the brisk pace that comes with being late to school. We get the shock of her arriving at her classroom door only to find that her doppelganger is already there!
Unfortunately, for me, the rest of the book did not live up the that early promise. The characters all seem to have interchangeable personalities; none of them are the least bit distinctive from each other. Not even Citrus, really. The brisk pace that initially worked would also have been good for the rest of the book if it had been done well. However, it just felt rushed and awkward. This is not a long book, and was made even shorter because I found myself skipping over vast swaths of Citrus' repetitive (and sometimes nonsensical) inner monologue. This inner monologue often consisted of a series of questions. "I felt so afraid. Would I be able to escape? Would I save my friends? Would I ever see so-and-so again? Would I make it to college? How could I think about college now when my life is at stake? I didn't know." There were these kinds of passages over and over, each one more tiresome than the last.
Not having read past the brief book description before deciding to dive into the entire book, I had no idea whether the doppelgangers would be an outside force like, say, aliens, or some kind of paranormal manifestation of Citrus' mental state. I was hoping for the latter, and got the former. Which was actually a blessing in disguise because I don't know how the author would have handled the former. This novel is just straight-forward YA sci-fi. Not terrible but nothing special. A few good elements, but overall just OK, and very much for a younger readership.
Citrus and Aedan found themselves in a very unusual position when they turned up at school one morning to find themselves, or rather their doubles, already in their class. The pair soon realise that something strange is happening in their town and their class mates are being kidnapped and replaced by doppelgangers. How they avoided being taken they don’t know but the race is on to find their friends before something awful happens to them.
This book had me turning the pages from start to finish, I was so curious as to what was happening and where these doppelgangers came from. I haven’t come across a storyline quite like this one before and found the whole thing totally unpredictable. Some of the scenes did drag on and feel a little irrelevant to the story slowing the pace in parts but the ‘need to know’ kept me hooked. One major twist had me really shocked, I did NOT see it coming!
When I was up to 90% (I read the kindle version) and we were at a fairly crucial point in the plot I was devastated to find the book ended and the last 10% was an excerpt from a totally different book…..How can you do this to me??? Book 2 is coming soon……..but when is soon?? I need to know…NOW!!!
Overall this was a very interesting read, it had humour, adventure, suspense and intrigue. It is a comfortable read with a natural voice and I enjoyed it.
This is my first run-in with Sci-Fi. At least I think this is considered Sci-Fi. To be honest I'm still not sure if we are dealing with a paranormal aspect or a sci-fi one. Still this book has intrigue that will keep you turning the pages until the very end.
Citris, and a bunch of kids at her school are being taken over by doppelgangers. For some reason Citrus and Aedan are the only two "real" people that the doppelgangers haven't kidnapped yet. The problem is, that leaves them to figure out what's going on and how to save the others, as well as not get themselves caught in the process. But it's not all bad since Citrus has a huge crush on Aedan and it looks like they are going to be spending some time together. Nothing like a life or death situation to bring people together. Now if only they can live long enough maybe Citrus will get lucky and Aedan might actually kiss her?
Like I said I am not exactly sure if we are dealing with a paranormal element or a sci-fi. I was intrigued the whole time just trying to figure that out. I am sad to say that the ending was a little abrupt, and I still don't know exactly what these "doppelgangers" are. Still there is a fair amount of action mixed with humor that kept me reading. I also think that this could have been a little better if it was just formatted differently. For example, if the author used italics in places it would have flowed better.
Overall I liked Citrus and I can't wait to see what happens next.
Doppelganger seemed like an intriguing and fun read, that ultimately fell short of expectations. This one is a hard one to review because honestly, there wasn’t much I liked.
The main character, Citrus, was horribly annoying. I guess I could say that the voice of the novel was unique or interesting, but it wasn’t in a good way. Citrus is an airhead and a motormouth - everything she thinks could be condensed in about half time, ridding the novel of the unnecessary rambling and maybe making her connection to the other characters more memorable. It was easy to forget she cared about anybody but herself and Aedan with all the dribble in the way.
All of the people in the novel felt two dimensional - they were nowhere near fleshed out enough, and came out bland and dry with no real flavor attached. I struggled through a lot of this book, there was just nowhere near enough of anything to keep me turning the pages.
The above paired with the author’s writing ability, was a recipe for disaster. Too many adverbs, not enough detail, and words/actions that repeated over and over again. To top it off, the story ended without any real explanation, on a cliffhanger to boot - albeit a bad one, as I have no desire to read on to find out what happens.
Overall, I’d give this story two stars as it was only just bearable. If you’re looking for a story about doppelgangers, there are much better ones out there so keep looking.
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review, thank you!
Citrus is already having a bad day, but things take a turn for the worst when she see's herself, already in class, making her History test. She's got a doppelganger...
I think this book would work better for teens a bit younger than YA, as the writing and story seem a bit too childish for YA. There's a lot of repetition, mostly at the beginning of the story. Citrus repeats over and over who her crush is and what nickname she dislikes. (and this while the world may come to an end!) Also, the main characters make some very illogical decisions. Like, it's so important I tell you this now, but I can't speak while we're driving. But as the characters are sixteen, I guess it's meant as a YA after all.
My biggest problem with this book however is that we don't get to know anything really. It's very short, on my eReader it was only 130 pages, but there's going to be a sequel! Why not just make it a bigger book. The ending was quite abrupt, and not a single question as to why the Doppelgangers are here is answered... I'm always a bit disappointed if I'll have to buy another book to find out, especially as I don't really care for the characters and their childish/stupid decisions while faced with Doppelgangers.
As you can probably tell these are two installments in a series so I don't want to talk too much about what happens, I'll tell you a little bit, but to be honest I found the interaction between the characters to be just as good as all the action. Citrus begins her day by running late to school and bumping into Melissa in the principal's office, as usual Melissa refers to her by the unwanted nickname of Orange, which I found cute and funny, but as you can imagine Citrus adds it to the list of annoying things happening to her today. When she finally makes it to class she sees that she is already in her seat and taking her test. Huh? As she is trying to wrap her mind around the fact that this could happen, and then the fact that it is happening she is joined in the hall by Aedan who also has a double in class. Together they flee the school, but end up returning for friends and others including Melissa much to Citrus's dismay. I found the dynamics between the characters to be authentic and I loved watching the dynamics change as they came to know trust and be skeptical of each other, not only do the dynamics for the group change, but the dynamics between other character such as between Citrus and her friend Olivia change as well. I liked the pace and the dramatic feel of the events. I felt like I was right there with the characters. I am very curious to see what happens to them next.
Citrus was over an hour late to school. She somehow overslept even though she's never been late for anything. Worried about being late to her World History exam, she rode her bike the few miles to school and ran to the office to get a late pass, but the secretary seemed confused when checking the attendance sheet.
In too much of a hurry to pay attention to anything but getting to her test, Citrus ignored the secretary's confusion and ran to class. But what she saw when she got there was nothing she was expecting. She was already in the classroom taking her test.
How could she have been late to school...but also be taking a test at the same time? Confronted in the hallway by a boy she's had a crush on forever, Citrus realized that something strange is happening. Now she knows that she isn't the only one with a double somehow.
Citrus must uncover the secrets behind the Doppelganger's taking over the school and try to save herself and her friends at the same time.
This was book one and I really enjoyed it. I'm very excited to read the next one!
I came across this book whilst browsing Netgalley back in the summer. The title and cover caught my attention, it wouldn't be the most outstanding cover I have seen on a book but I found it unusual and intriguing. Reading the synopsis intrigued me more, so I requested it and was lucky enough to get accepted.
A fast paced story. Filled with the incessant, random ramblings inside the main characters head. I persisted with the book as in between Citrus rambling away to herself there were some interesting parts of the story... Or so I kept wishing for. I don't see this as being a young adult book. The writing style is very simple, the romance is innocent and the violence is non existent. It was a quick, easy read, but unfortunately didn't live up to the expectations I had hoped for.
Each to their own, everyone has different likes and dislikes, you never know if you will like it until you try it. I shall leave that decision in your hands.
Congratulations to Milda Harris, may you have many future successes!
Citrus is having a rather strange day. First she oversleeps and then when she rushes to her World History Class so she isn’t late for her exam she realises she is already in the class. Well, Citrus’ doppelganger is. Thinking she has lost her mind she bumps into her crush, Aedan. Weirdest thing is that his doppelganger is in class too!
Aedan and Citrus spend their day trying to work out what the doppelgangers want, who is real and who isn’t and what is happening with the world?!
I really enjoyed reading this, and particularly liked the twist in the end (no spoilers). Citrus’ overactive imagination and her fear of getting pimples whilst with the boy she likes is hilarious given the situation and the fact that there are more important things at stake. I can’t wait to read the second book in this series to learn more about the doppelgangers and to find out whether the ‘real versions’ manage to escape or not.
Favourite quote: Somehow, I had pictured this moment in my head, sitting alone with Aedan in a car, as so much more romantic. Of course, we hadn’t had evil doppelgangers in any of those dreams either, but that was a technicality.
'Doppelganger' is a fun and interesting young adult paranormal novel that follows Citrus Leahy in her once ordinary teenage life - only to one day discover that she has a doppelganger. As if being a teen in high school wasn't bad enough, now Citrus has to deal with the weirdness that has invaded her life.
I think the concept behind this novel was a really interesting one that is new to the genre, which makes it refreshing and unique. The tone was pretty light-hearted and fun, which made this an easy read for me. The characters were pretty stereotypical without any real depth or originality to them, but it didn't bother me much due to the overall feel of the book. The writing was well done, although parts of the narrative did seem a bit cliched at times, and the flow of the story felt natural and easy. Overall, this was a fun book that dealt with a great new topic for young adult paranormal fiction - one that I would like to see more of in the future.
Disclosure: I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Late to school one morning, Citrus discovers that she is already in class. Standing outside her classroom door she sees herself, or someone who looks just like her. She is not the only one so it seems. Aedan, the hottie who she is secretly crushing on has the same problem. This book will take you on a roller coaster ride with plenty of twist and turns. Citrus will learn that you don't know who you can trust. Who is a Doppelganger? What exactly are they, what do they want and where did they come from?
I really enjoyed reading this book. It reminded me right off of Invasion of the Body Snatchers meets The Faculty. It is a fresh new twist on sci-fi. Citrus is a loyal girl who will do anything to save the people that she loves. This book surprised and shocked me at times. It ended with a cliff hanger so now I have to read the second one immediately. I recommend this book to anyone who loves a clean YA thriller.
I received this book from Netgalley for a fair and honest review. This in no way influenced my review and thoughts of this book.
I actually loved this book! From the description I thought it would be okay and all, but it grew on me. I thought it was very original and felt real. Aedan, or should I say Doppel-Aedan, and Citrus didn't fall in love at first sight, they began to love overtime; I loved that! You wouldn't believe how tired I get of books where the main characters fall in love when they barely know each other! When I got to the part where you find out that Aedan is not the real Aedan, I was completely shocked! I really didm't see it coming! I guess that's why you call them doppelgangers, right? All and all, it was a great book that I really enjoyed reading. I would have liked it to be a bit longer to see what happens next, but based on the plot I think it was a good length. I'm really looking forward to the sequel and hope to read more of the author's books. So, what are you doing wasting your time reading my review? Go read the book!

I really enjoyed this book told from the perspective of a bookish and socially awkward teenage girl. Citrus; great name, by the way, makes an excellent heroine with believable angst ridden situations that enhance the drama and humor in the story.
I liked not knowing what exactly those doppelgangers really are. It gives me a great incentive to read further into the series to uncover that mystery and a few more. I have a suspicion as to what they are, but I'm not going to share that here. I like reviews that don't give too much away, even if that includes guesses as to what's going to happen next. I'll be truthful and let you know if I was even close, as I continue on reading the series. Yup, I'm hooked. Doppelganger is a speedy to read, delightful YA Paranormal / Sci-Fi Romance suitable for all ages.
