Enter the Regency world of the Writing Girls series in Maya Rodale's charming tale of a scheming lady, a handsome second son, and the trouble they get into when the perfect scandal becomes an even more perfect match.
Scheme: A folly, a swan, a little lie . . . a compromising position
Lady Charlotte Brandon is always up to something . . . but somehow her best schemes for matchmaking often end in disaster.
Scheme: A family feud, outrageously false rumors, a shattered priceless vase . . . an even more compromising position
It's no wonder she's considered by at least one devastatingly handsome man to be devious, destructive, and dangerously appealing.
Scheme: A fox, a rabbit, a childhood foe, and a dashing rogue . . . the proposal to end all proposals
It's high time someone turned the tables on the lovely Lady Charlotte, and James Beauchamp is just the man to do it. Even if it means beating Charlotte at her devious game with a scandalous scheme of his own.
Maya Rodale is the best-selling and award-winning author of funny, feminist fiction including historical romance, YA and historical fiction. A champion of the romance genre and its readers, she is also the author of Dangerous Books For Girls: The Bad Reputation of Romance Novels, Explained. Maya reviews romance for NPR and has appeared in Bustle, Glamour, Shondaland, Buzzfeed, The Huffington Post and PBS. She began reading romance novels in college at her mother’s insistence and has never been allowed to forget it.
I devoured this one with ridiculous speed and eagerness.
As some of you who have bravely suffered through my reviews already know, I tend to place less value on what's written than on HOW it's written. I can merrily forgive certain issues with plot, pacing and even characterization if I'm sufficiently charmed and impressed by an author's writing style. Maya Rodale is among the most sparkly, witty, downright hilarious HR writers I've been lucky enough to come across. Her style reminds me a bit of Tessa Dare's, though with even more of an 'in on the joke' self-awareness.
Lady Charlotte is a mischievous, quirky, fun-loving and ultimately good-hearted matchmaker. She was memorably lively, vibrant and just plain amusing. She reminded me quite fondly of Jane Austen's titular "Emma", in fact. "I wouldn't say that I'm bossy," Charlotte remarked thoughtfully. "I just always know what to do before anyone else does and I do not keep that information to myself." I included the above quote because it nicely sums up both this lovably flawed heroine and the novella's smart, humorous writing style.
So why, despite these fangirl-y raves, did I deduct a star? For whatever combination of reasons, I didn't love the hero nearly as much as I did the heroine. This is primarily an issue of personal preference, though, as someone who wishes there were more adorably sweet, sexily brilliant betas in romantic fiction, so rest assured that you'll likely find him charming, amusing and swoon-worthy! I just happen to be at a stage in my fiction addiction where I've grown weary of the manwhore rakes who are, of course, the VERY most desirable men in all of England and who have already slept with most of the country's pulse-having females prior to meeting our heroine. We learn immediately upon meeting James that he's just been sleeping with some woman he doesn't know well or care about and is being shamelessly flirted with by yet another woman----just in case we didn't know what a stud he is ;) Thankfully, James isn't one of those verbally abusive cads who's a mean-spirited, scarily angry jerk in the name of being 'alpha' (don't get me started on that!), but he didn't really stand out as different for me than the gazillion other reformed rakes with a not-so-secretly decent heart who we've all read about many times before, and I adored Charlotte enough to want her to be with a more unique sort of hero!
Another issue is one that doesn't bother me too much personally but which I feel compelled to warn my fellow bookworms about: This book is one of the more modern feeling historicals I've come across. If historical authenticity is important to you and if anachronistic language and a more relaxed, contemporary feel in your HRs make you cringe, you might want to proceed with caution! And be prepared for some good-natured silliness as well. Hint: There's a chase involving our heroine's beloved pet fox :)
But if you're craving sharp, high energy and clever fun, I'd definitely give this one a shot. It's sexy and passionate without being too explicit and fluffy without being totally devoid of substance. The uniquely amusing, vibrant writing style had me immediately searching for any and all other Maya Rodale books that my greedy Kindle and I could find!
Lady Charlotte Brandon had the best intentions when she told Lucy that feathered bonnet was lovely but then it all went haywire and Lucy is now known as Swan Lucy and Charlotte knows she must fix this! Her scheme is simple, lock Lucy and her old fried, James in the new folly and poof, all will be better because surely they will fall in love. But the blasted wind blows her scheme apart and suddenly Charlotte is trapped with James. James who was her dear friend as a twelve-year-old girl but has not spoken to her in eight years after the...incident. The horribly tragic, yet amusing, incident. Confronting ensures and an attraction blooms but the thought most prevalent is to get out of the folly undetected so they are not forced into marriage. Unfortunately, this leads to a new problem that Charlotte is sure she can mend with a new scheme and this one too goes awry. James, however, sees that this pretty, too clever, devious woman is just right for him and he decides to give Charlotte a bit of her own medicine. Can James pull of the scheme of the year and show Charlotte his true heart?
This was a quick, fun read and I really enjoyed it! It is short, about half the file with the rest being excerpts from Maya Rodale's previous and upcoming books, but it worked for me. We have met Charlotte in the previous books but if you have not yet read anything by Maya Rodale, this is a wonderful place to start to give her writing a try! Charlotte is a delight-bold, loving, courageous, impulsive and daring...all very unladylike yet hoping for the romantic love she sees her brother has. She, along with her pet fox, cause havoc all over town yet once James spends a bit of time with her after all these years, he knows she is just perfect the way she is for him. Even though this is short, we get enough of their shared past to move forward but I would have liked a bit more, as always. I read this in one night and I eagerly awaiting the next book in this series! If you need a quick pick me up with a feisty heroine and dashing hero, a runaway fox, and a scheme so romantic it will make your heart melt, this is the perfect novella for you! 4 stars
There aren't enough words to describe just how much I loved this novella. Quite simply I adored it and it only solidified my love of Maya Rodale's work all that much more. Three Schemes was such a cute and charming read filled with humor and romance. My only complaint is that I wish it was longer. I loved Charlotte's antics and simply adored the relationship between her and James. I just wanted more but in a good way. I would have loved to have seen them the stars of a full length novel because Charlotte is hilarious.
As children Charlotte and James were the best of friends but after an incident involving Charlotte's beloved pet rabbit they had a falling out and have not spoken since.
Charlotte is a troublemaker and schemer and is somehow always up to mischief, though her intentions are noble. She considers herself a matchmaker but somehow her matchmaking schemes always go awry.
James has always known that Charlotte is up to no good. She's always up to something and his plans are to stay as far away from her schemes as possible. This backfires on him when Charlotte gets him and herself locked in a Folly during a garden party. Charlotte's goal was to get James and her friend Lucy locked in the Folly, not herself. Now they both must work together and quickly before they are found in a compromising situation and forced to wed.
The hijinks these two go through throughout the novella are laugh out loud funny. Charlotte has the best of intentions but somehow something in her plans always go wrong and because of this Charlotte and James are constantly being thrown together in compromising situations. Soon both are realizing just how attracted to one another they really are.
I loved, loved, loved these two together. Their scenes together were simply hilarious and I found myself laughing out loud more than once. Not only were these two funny but their relationship and chemistry between them was explosive. These two were sexy together. Not only that, they have a bond that transcends the pages.
If you are looking for a quick read that is charming and funny, you definitely won't go wrong with this one.
The summary of this novel intrigued me and led me to think that I might just discover my next favorite humorous author in the historical romance genre. Woe, is me for it was NOTHING like what I had anticipated!
The author's style and way with words leaves a lot to be desired...While reading, I actually had the feeling that I was seeing a reader of Quinn's or Chase's or Medeiros' trying to simulate their humor and wit, but failing miserably! At one point, I thought "Bull, even while drunk, tied to a candelabra and reciting my maths, I could have said that one line better..." and that is nothing if not sad. Sad for the writer, who tried being original, yet ended up the complete opposite and sad for the reader, who cringes and sighs at the site of all this...
The saddest part is that, the idea itself was not bad, but so poorly executed, it made you feel even worse for having liked the concept and principle of the thing, yet having to see it blown to smithereens! Choppy and elusive descriptions of the main's identities instead of real character development add to the suffering. The presence of a villain wouldn't have been mandatory, if the plot had at least some inner or even UFO-in-my-kitchen type of unbelievable conflict...alas, the story has NONE! To add insult to injury, there is no saving grace in engaging side-characters or even humorous or dramatic events, because, guess what?! THERE ARE NONE!
I would have rated it a star, but in honor of a rather original idea I shall leave it at two...
THREE SCHEMES AND A SCANDAL is a fun and wildly romantic novella set in the world of Ms. Rodale's Writing Girls series. I've loved Lady Charlotte since she was first introduced. She's headstrong, mischievous, and full of trouble. But, when she does set up the schemes they are always for good reasons (at least she thinks they are). Charlotte thinks that she knows what's best for everyone and that she is the only one who can help them achieve these things. The only man who could possible be the right man for her would find these traits endearing and be more than willing to put up with all the scheming. James, whose known Charlotte since they were children, is just the man for the job. I love the way they reconnect with each other after several years apart and how they realize that they are the perfect match. This novella had me laughing at Charlotte's (and James) antics and sighing at the romance between the two. THREE SCHEMES AND A SCANDAL is the perfect novella for a quiet afternoon with a warm blanket and a cup of tea.
the book girl gives THREE SCHEMES AND A SCANDAL a 5/5
Very sweet and funny historical novella. It focuses on Charlotte, sister of the hero from A Groom of One's Own, who has a tendency to create and perform elaborate schemes. I love childhood friend-to-lovers stories and this one was very cute. Both main characters were deep and relatable and they worked well as a couple. I thought all the different schemes were hilarious and the marriage proposal was one of the cutest I've read in awhile.
This is my first Maya Rodale story, but it won't be my last. This novella features childhood friends who have become estranged until Charlotte's attempt to set up James with one of her friends backfires. A cute, fun story.
Thank you to Edelweiss and Avon for give me the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book.
normally I hate short stories. they eat up one of my library downloads and have no substance. but this one was ridiculous and cute. and now I want a fox.
I enjoyed Maya Rodale's Writing Girls series, so finding this novella was a plus. Three Schemes And A Scandal is a lovely way to tie up lose ends. Take the phone off the hook, kick back, and enjoy this fun, funny story.
Our heroine is Lady Charlotte Brandon, sister of the Duke of Hamilton and Brandon. He's the hero from A Groom of One's Own, the 1st book in the series. Charlotte causes trouble, loves matchmaking, and has promised her long suffering brother no more schemes. She doesn't mean any harm but the tale of the "Fashion Disaster of 1825" will be told for a long time. Things backfire a lot.
James Beauchamp is our hero. He's back in London after a 5 year Grand Tour of the continent. He just didn't want to come home. He notices right away that his childhood playmate has grown into a lovely young woman. Things get tricky as they had a falling out for which Charlotte never forgave him.
Charlotte cooks up a scheme (did you think she wouldn't?) to pair James with her "Fashion Disaster" victim. Of course things backfire and James is drawn into an adventure such as he hasn't experienced since childhood. You'll want to pay attention to a cute part of the plot that is revieled along the way. Don't miss it, it's tragic and funny. Who is George Coney? Has anyone read his autobiography? All will be made clear in good time. Happy reading.
Charlotte is definitely Austen's Emma on crack but that's a fun thing. Not a lot of depth here and I didn't find her highjinx as funny as I'm sure others have but I did love James coming to the realization that she makes his life interesting and fun and that he is the match she needs. I became really fascinated by her loving brother and his wife, how they understand her (a rarity in this world and in historical romance) so I went on to find their story.
This was fun but it took me a bit to get into. I liked Charlotte from when we met her in the series but I feel like it took awhile for me to be invested in her and James, maybe cause we hadn’t met him and gotten to know him like we did her. But by the end I was really enjoying them together.
I did not appreciate the words at the end of the 3 stories saying click here to continue reading! I paid to read the book. First story had an ending, but was not very long. The rest no endings.
A cute and charming filled with humor and romance. I wish it was longer. I loved Lady Charlotte headstrong, mischievous, and full of trouble. I simply loved the relationship between her and James.
Hello there my favorite couple, Roarke and Eve Dallas. Met again with amazing police leiutenant and her magnificent bussinessman lover. The story continued weeks after the last book ended, and another
My first book in “We Love Lisa Kleypas (WLLK) Year Long Reading Challenge “. I put this on my New Author category. Yes, this was my first reading experience with Maya Rodale’s installment. I’ve heard about her just about early this year (I knew there’s author with her name, but never knew about her works), and when I looked this book had bargain price I grab it fast.
This book was great, great, great!!!! It was sweet romance, funny story, captivating characters and well done executed. But I must admit, the hilarious factor was the biggest reason I picked this one. And what an enjoyable experience reading the story about The mischief Lady Charlotte Brandon and her childhood friend, James Beauchamp.
The book was part of The Writing Girls series but it could be read as stand alone. and it was only 100 pages. The story started in a Ball when Lady Charlotte was creating a scheme for her friend Swan Lucy (Lady Lucy’s nickname – the reason of her name was hilarious) to met the renowned rake, James Beauchamp. Charlotte was design herself as matchmaker for her friend. The scheme involve bribery, secret meeting, a folly, and a key. Charlotte was planning locked the two of them in a folly, with high expectation they will fall in love and happily ever after.
Disaster happen. Charlotte was the one locked with James in the folly. Their encounter was awkward because though they were childhood friend and partner in crime, but they never spoke to each other for years. It was the result of Charlotte’s pet rabbit death, due to James’s friend, Dudley, who roasted the poor rabbit. The incident drove them apart and ever since both of them no longer speak.
Luckly, Charlotte and James was saved from the doomed fate, marriage. They were escape by the high window – Charlotte was, with the dress off, only with her undergarment. Just said that their escaping scenes were LOL moments. Incidents follow days after, and again luck still on her side. But the second scheme, which involve library, drape, illicit encounter, book, and a KISS, made them realize their own feeling. And the third scheme, design by James, was the grandest of all which made Charlotte the happiest girl in the world J
Reading this book left you with smile and laugh. Such a sweet romance with wonderful characters. The story was well executed. It was smooth and poignant. With her great writing skill, Maya Rodale revealed and pealed each characters with every words. And with each words, she showed us the beauty of the era. Yes, there’s some typo, but didn’t bother me at all.
How about the characters? Wonderful. I loved each and everyone in the story. The hero and heroine were amazing. I love that type of heroine. Such a strong, brave, and unique person, more so for that kind of lady at that time. She was trouble, and people feared her. But fortunately she was duke’s sister, and her position made her impossible to hate.
The hero, James, at first wasn’t too lovable. He was such ordinary nobleman – ordinary in the terms of gambling, wenching, carousing, and drinking. And I must admit though I like him a lot but his characters wasn’t deep enough to made me feel him. Despite his imperfectness, he was perfect hero for Charlotte. He knew her. He understand her quirkiness and her need to made everything in life exciting. Dullness was death for her, and James know it.
Other characters were as engaging as the hero and the heroine. Charlotte friends, Hariette and Swan Lucy were great addition. The Duke and Duchess, were interesting enough to made me pick their story as my next Rodale adventure. And the ton. Maybe sometimes she exaggerated their attitude, but their antic totally hilarious for sure.
Overall, Charlotte and James scheming deserved your time. If you loved Julia Quinn’s books made yourself a favor and pick this author.
Though she’s made a promise not to concoct any more schemes, Lady Charlotte Brandon simply can’t help herself. She has a friend in need of matchmaking and she knows just the gentleman who’d be the perfect husband: her childhood companion, James Beauchamp. Only Charlotte’s schemes have a way of going wrong, which is how she finds herself locked in a folly with James. Charlotte certainly doesn’t want to marry James herself, no matter the scandal that would occur if they were found together. She still hasn’t quite forgiven him for the disaster that ended their friendship when she was twelve.
It may have been years since James last spoke to Charlotte, but that doesn’t mean he can’t still spot one of her schemes a mile away. But the spirited girl he once knew with a taste for madcap adventures has turned into, well, a beautiful, spirited woman with a taste for madcap adventures. And though James hadn’t planned on being drawn into one of Charlotte’s schemes, he soon realizes that he doesn’t want to be without Charlotte, outrageous ideas and all.
With a lot of planning — and perhaps a touch of luck — James will turn the tables on Charlotte, causing a scandal that could win the heart of his beloved schemer.
Like a glass of champagne, Three Schemes and a Scandal is bright, bubbly, and wholly delicious. Charlotte and James’s romance is my absolute favorite story of Maya Rodale’s to date! Charlotte is intelligent, clever, funny, and kindhearted. I almost wish she were real, just so I could have her as a friend. She causes quite a bit of trouble, true, but she always has the best of intentions. James is truly her perfect match. He’s smart enough to keep up with Charlotte and he values her vivacious spirit and sense of adventure. Both separately and together these two were a delight to read about. I honestly could not stop smiling the entire time I read Three Schemes and a Scandal. Ms. Rodale has outdone herself with Charlotte and James’s story, for it is so much fun that I want to read it over and over and over again.
I could detail all the antics that take place in Three Schemes and a Scandal, but even if I could do the story justice by summarizing the highlights (which I couldn’t), revealing what takes place in Three Schemes and a Scandal would ruin the joy of discovery for readers. So I’ll keep mum on the plot and simply say that Three Schemes and a Scandal is one of the best stories I’ve read this year. Charlotte and James’s novella is a must read for anyone who enjoys a lively, entertaining historical romance. What are you waiting for? Pick up your copy and enjoy this sparkling, romantic romp!
Charlotte, the youngest sister of the Duke of Brandon and Sophie’s sister-in-law, is known for her hair-brained schemes. As a child, she and her best friend James were famous for their adventures that ultimately led to trouble. They friendship was solid until the death of their beloved pet rabbit George Coney and the consequent roasting and eating of poor old George by James’ friend, Dudley.
10 years later, James and Charlotte and back together again and both noticing each other in a completely way. While James seems to have matured, Charlotte is still attempting to help others with her schemes and mischief. This led to she and James becoming locked in a folly and ruining the perfect afternoon gathering James’ father had planned.
Their next meeting took place in a library when Charlotte tried to mend the rift between James and his father cause by the folly incident. That led to the destruction of a library and hiding on a balcony because of an adulterous encounter happening in the library.
This novella was so much fun to read. I loved Charlotte’s character from the first moment she was introduced in “A Groom of One’s Own.” She was so spunky and I am glad to see her character has stayed true throughout the series. And James is equally as bad as Charlotte and his love for her, just as she is, is so sweet. They are perfect together. But, Lord help their family members when they have kids!
This novella is not a stand-alone. You must read the other books in the series first, and I highly recommend doing so. It is a great series, well written, the female characters are spunky, quirky, troublemakers and their men love them just as they are.
OMG!! I giggled through this one then wiped away tears at the end. Truly romantic!
Charlotte Brandon's heart is in the right place. If she feels she's caused a wrong, she schemes to make it right but the best laid plans don't always go as they should. To make up for a wrong she caused Lucy Swan, she decides to place the wayward girl in a compromising position that will draw her the attention of a very handsome and eligible suitor - James Beauchamp. When things go wrong, it's Charlotte who faces scandal but her old friend, James quickly covers for her only to put himself in hot water with his father. Now Charlotte must scheme once more to remedy the wrong she has caused James. This scheme does more than put her and James in hot water - it makes them both very aware of a passion neither can deny.
THREE SCHEMES AND A SCANDAL is like the cherry on top of a wonderful dessert! As if we hadn't already had enough fun with the Writing Girls, Charlotte's story is the crème de la crème! Reminiscent of classic romantic comedies such as BRINGING UP BABY starring Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn, this delightful novella kept me giggling and happy straight to the end with the most romantic, and nearly tragically planned proposal in print.
I highly recommend THREE SCHEMES AND A SCANDAL by Maya Rodale to anyone who loves a truly uplifting, fun-filled, and seriously romantic story to lift their spirits and leave them saying, "Awwww!" Enjoy!!
***No ARC, this one, I bought for my own enjoyment and so glad I did!
Charlotte and James used to be partners in crime during their childhood days. They were always together getting into all kinds of adventures. But after James went away to school at age 15, and Charlotte discovering her beloved dead pet rabbit stolen from his graven and roasting over a fire by James and his friends, their close friendship ended.
Now eight years later at a garden party to celebrate Lord Hastings newly built Folly, Charlotte comes up with a plan to match her friend Swan Lucy and James together in hopes that they will fall in love and them marry. Well that plan pretty much ends in disaster as she is the one who gets locked into the Folly with James and they try to figure a way out without being seen.
It is one hilarious misadventure after another as Charlotte’s infamous schemes keep throwing her and James together; proving that even after eight years apart, they still feel something for each other…more than they had realized.
James and Charlotte’s sweet romance is fun to watch unfold as they start to see that they could be each other’s perfect match. For those who are looking for a light historical romance read with a feisty heroine, a devilishly handsome rake, swoon worthy romance, and enough humor that will have you laughing often be sure to check out this novella. It is a short read, but still entertaining.
I absolutely adored this charming & romantic novella . Part of the wickedly exciting Writing Girls series . Charlotte & James were childhood comrades in adventure .Until Char discovers James & his school chums roasting her pet rabbitt over a spit . Eight years go by & she decides to play cupid by fixing him up with her friend Swan Lucy . Hilarity ensues as yet another one of her infamous schemes goes awry . Catastrophy is averted with no rabid swan , no rabbitt fricasee, & no weddings . Instead , James notices that his childhood friend has grown into a very beautiful woman . But the object of his desire is no ordinary woman so James knows he must make a grand gesture to win her heart . Much to the delight of readers , James engages in a scheme of his own to win her heart . This funny & engaging story reminded me why I love Maya Rodale's writing so much . I've read all of the books in her Writing Girls series . And I must say she keeps getting better with each book . Looking forward to the next story from this wonderful author.
Thanks to Edelweiss & Avon Publishing for allowing me to review this book .
While a short read, I didn't notice a lack in the story or character development. I was a little confused in the beginning because of the way the chapters were laid out (as my copy is an uncorrected proof, I'm not sure if it is still like this), it was difficult to get into the story at first. Once I did, I really enjoyed Charlotte; she is the type of historical heroine I enjoy reading about--take charge, fun, quick witted, and unwilling to let society get in the way of her desires. James was the perfect mate for Charlotte, in that he did not try to change her or himself to fit in the proper notion of what love is.
Even if you have never read any of the other Writing Girls books, you can still read this one. I've only read the first one, A Groom of One's Own, and didn't have any problems. It would probably enhance this story if you had read the others, but again, it was not necessary to the overall understanding.
THREE SCHEMES AND A SCANDAL by Maya Rodale is an interesting historical romance set in Regency England. A novella that is a quick fun read. 3.5 of "The Writing Girls",but can read a stand alone. See,"A Groom Of One's Own", "A Tale of Two Lovers", "The Tattooed Duke" and "Seducing Mr. Knightly". Charolotte grows up finally. Fast paced. Filled with laughable adventure, passion, and love. A must read especially if you enjoy laugh out loud situations as a young lady schemes. Follow,Lady Charlotte Brandon, and James Beauchamp,a younger son as he encounter a few of Lady Charlotte's schemes and a scandal. Fun read! Very relaxing read. Received for an honest review from the publisher and Above the Treeline. Details can be found at the author's website,Avon Impulse, an imprint of Harper Collins Publishers and My Book Addiction and More.
