Oh, how I enjoyed this story! A great romance, some humor, some steam, excitement and a solid plot… Highland Surrender grabbed hold from the start and didn’t let go!

Highlanders are my favorite genre within the historical romance genre, so I’ve read many takes on these lusty men… different settings, different eras, different situations… I'm sure I've read them all. I can’t say that this storyline is all that unique, but Ms. Brogan gave it a fresh voice and it was definitely entertaining.

Our hero and heroine, Myles and Fiona, are what/who drove the story for me. Their actions, their honesty, their hopes and dreams... I adore them both. And with amazing secondary characters, my only question is… when do they get their stories??
One thing that thrilled me BEYOND words was that I do NOT need that kind of drama in my historical romance reads.
This is a solid 4 “BRAVO!” stars, and had there been more Highland brogue, more authentic dialog, it might have even made it to 5. But that’s my pet peeve – I need the “och” and “aye” and “dinnae” and the other words that give the stories a distinctive Highland feel, but that said… Highland Surrender is a truly wonderful story.
So again, I ask… whose story is next, and when??

Oh, the wasted potential!
The story starts out with King James ordering two rival clans to unite in marriage. Fiona Sinclair is to be the sacrifice. She has to marry the son of the man who murdered her mother. She will do this for her clan because they desperately need this truce, but she won't forget what the Campbells did and what they are.
Myles has no desire to unite with the Sinclairs, even if Fiona is beautiful. He decides to make the best of the situation. Now, if he can only break through Fiona's hatred.
The story starts out with such potential! I love a good enemies to lovers/forced marriage. It's my bed and butter. Unfortunately, this book drops the ball, thanks largely to Fiona. I seriously could not stand her! She's a cruel b***h to Myles through 62% of the book. I understand being loyal to your clan and what his father did (he didn't).Blah blah blah. My understanding and sympathy of her situation died after 200 pages of venom. She married a good man who cares about her happiness. The problem was that he was too nice and had the patience of a saint. Somebody needed to put that spoiled girl over their knee. I still don't know what her endgame was. It's death do you part. If you don't want to be miserable for the rest of your life, maybe you should find a compromise or at least be civil
The story finally improved in the last 100 pages. Once she learns the truth about her mother, Fiona no longer needs to feel guilty about her feelings for Myles. Finally, I began to enjoy the story and their romances. There are some good mysteries and intrigue. The secondary characters definitely enriched the story, and I wish the Campbell family members had their own book.
Conclusion: The h ruined a good story and a great H. The author kept the h's animosity going for way too long!

I'm just going with a mini review on this one:
A forced marriage between two opposing clans. Misinformation and lies make for an adversarial relationship to start. As the truth comes to light and Myles and Fiona get to know (yum!!) each other, the marriage becomes very dear to both. Political intrigue, danger, and revelations make for an exciting read!
I highly recommend the audio version! Accents are lovely and the performance enhances this wonderful story. Steal of a deal: If you buy the Kindle version for $2.49 you can add the audio for an additional $1.99!!

She is not too silly (but a little simple most of the time) and he is not too alpha-stupid. There is a forced marriage-of-convenience, a conspiracy plot and a past, unsolved murder.
The enemies-to-lovers storyline is a little uneven in its pacing, the point where they finally fall for each other is a little too sudden. There is the usual to-and-fro and misunderstandings. But all things considered the love story is ok.
I don‘t expect historical accuracy from a romance read, so I am not too fussed, if it isn‘t glaringly obvious. Based on the additional fact checking I did on the side, the major plot points and representation of the historical facts are fairly true to real events.
In case you are wondering, we are in the first half of the 16th century and the reigning monarch is James V of Scotland . He is a contemporary of Henry VIII and the father of Mary, Queen of Scots.

So, bottom line, not bad. I had fun looking up castles and historical details. The love story was ok, the conspiracy plot was ok, Fiona figuring out her life and how she fits into the Campbell clan was ok, too. However, especially there I would have liked a bit more character development and a tad more exploration of her relationship with her mother-in-law and Cedric Campbell, for example. The story telling fell a little flat, I did some skimming in the middle.
I was entertained enough for three stars and would be willing to pick up something else by the author.

What a wonderful heartwarming story!
It has been some time that I have read such a sweet story. So full of intrigue, but so tender all the same!
At the beginning I was slightly annoyed with Fiona because she was so convinced of her hatred. She was taught by her whole family to hate all that was Campbell, so when she's force to wed one she devasteted - after ll they brutally killed her mother! So I could understand her anger.
She's a strong woman and she doesn't have any problem saying what's on her mind!
I appreciated that, as the story went on, she changed her views and Myles action were the perfect way to make her change them!
Myles was incredibly wonderful. Here we don't have the classical highlander who's stubborn, inflexible, angry. Myles is the total opposite! He understands what Fiorna is going through and approach her with tenderness. He treats her fairly. He tempts. He cajoles. He presuades. That's not to say that he's a beta. No, no. He's alpha, but a tender one! It was a pleasure to read it!
I loved Vivienne too. She is impish. She's smart and clever. And she becomes Fiona's friend immediately. She's the one Myles go to to get help with wooing Fiona. It was sweet how she explains to him what he got to do! :)
Another thing I appreciated was that there's no love triangle, no love angst dragged forever - just a beautifully told story about sworn enemies falling love!

I loved this book from start to finish. I really liked how it started and loved how it finished.
This story is told in three points of view, which was a great way to break up the story, and gave us a look at all sides so you knew what schemes were being made.
Myles is forced into a marriage and therefore forced into forsaking the woman he thinks he loves. This Union with Fiona is to secure a truce between both of their waring clans. Little do they know they're both being used in an evil scheme.
I have to give it to Myles, he really did try to give it his all from the first day of their marriage. Fiona was not swayed in doing so which caused some tension and issues a long the way.
One of the things I truly loved about this story was the fact that Myles is not the Laird of their keep. His father is very much alive and still the chief in charge. This gave Myles a chance to work on wooing Fiona and seeking advice on doing so. Granted for a while he does play the acting chief role, I was just glad this role did not over shadow his duty in trying to be a good husband. He doesn't put duty over heart.

Not bad
Interesting and captivating book, though but this is my first highlander book. I wish Fiona had more spirit and ferocity but still very enjoyable.

I was pleasantly surprised to find myself enjoying this book. It's a typical Highlander romance setup, but it worked for me. This was my first time reading this author's work. I looked at her backlist and this is one of the few historical romances she wrote, as she mainly writes contemporary romance. I listened to the audiobook and the narrator was inconsistent with the voices in a few of the scenes.
What I liked: (minor spoilers ahead)
- the marriage was consummated on their wedding night (which is very early in the book). There was none of that "hero using his or some animal's blood to show proof of the bride's deflowering" B.S. She did not get an orgasm though, so that was different.
- there is no OW drama. The hero had an affection for a French lady named Odette and had wished to marry her. She's mentioned a few times, but she never made an appearance, which made me think that we can cut her out of the book entirely and the story would be unaffected.
- the hero is patient with the heroine. The heroine hates the Campbell clan (the hero's clan) because she believes the hero's father (Cedric) murdered her mother (the heroine was 10 years old at the time). She and her clan suspect it was Cedric because his broach was found on her body. Anyways the heroine refuses to give in to her husband's seduction or accept this marriage while he tries to win her over.
- she almost escapes. I always enjoy it when the heroine outsmarts the hero and his men in her escape plans. I thank Judith McNaught for that! (A Kingdom of Dreams)
- they profess their love before some plot device forces them to.
- the misunderstanding that could have cost the third-act breakup was cleared almost immediately, so there is no third-act breakup! Hooray for that!
- the politics didn't take away page time from the romance.
- I was surprised who the real murderer was.
- the epilogue isn't a child birth scene. Their baby is already a month old, I believe.
What I didn't like:

Interesting historical piece set during the rule of James VI as the King of Scotland that gets let down a bit by characterization of the leads.
At the command of the King the loyalist Campbell and highland Sinclair clans are to form a truce, sealed by the marriage of Myles Campbell to Fiona Sinclair. The problem is that Myles's father has been accused by the Sinclair clan of murdering Fiona's mother, one of the main reasons for the feud between the clans. In the wake of a mother's murder Fiona and all the Sinclair children have been brought up on a steady diet of hatred for the Campbells and the King.
I liked the setup for this story much more than the execution. Fiona is a believable 16th century woman of the upper classes and only bucks that identity by having a slightly sharp tongue, otherwise she's basically ruled by the men in her life and is mostly reactive to events around her. When she does take action, it tends to be not well-planned, and it leaves her looking feckless. Myles on the other hand is also quite believably arrogant, and seems almost oblivious to his new wife's extremely reasonable concerns ie., that her new father-in-law is a murderer.

RATING: 4 "Delicious & Swoon Worthy Myles" HEARTS!! :)
Unconventional relationships are one of the most fun, and angst-filled romances. And a forced marriage between two belligerent clans, and two very opposite people, is as unconventional as it gets – Tracey Brogan giving us a very entertaining read. I just loved Highland Surrender from beginning to end!
This has so many of my top favourite Historical Romance elements, which is why I really enjoyed its plot. It has a simple, quick flow and is full of deception, malicious schemes, high-stakes and ever rising tensions, but it is lightened with humour, sizzling steam, flirty bantering, and scorching love scenes! Both Myles and Fiona are wonderful, three-dimensional characters with realistic and relatable emotions, making them instantly likeable. Above all, both of them hold their own in this, both individually and as a couple.
Above the usual sexy romance and good plot, what I really enjoyed is the fact that even though the blurb mentions another woman in the picture, that (THANK HEAVENS!!) plot element is ever absent. No unnecessary jealous-woman drama in this one. YAY! :D
Overall, a very exciting and delightful read, with well written main and secondary characters, an intriguing plot and brilliant storytelling. I would love a follow up story. Definitely recommended!

Overall rating: 4.25 stars! I felt like it needed a little over 4 stars, but not quite 4.5? I know, I am weird LOL

My review:
If you like historical romance, enemies to lovers type of story, then this is your book.
This couple started off with a rocky start. The heroine, Fiona, who was around 20? I am guessing, is betrothed to er clan's sworn enemy, Myles. This is a problem because Fiona literally HATES the Campbell clan for she believes that his father, Cedric is who killed her mother all those years ago. The King has ordered this wedding to try to seek peace between the clans. Myles is upset for his own reasons. Yes, he doesn't like their clan at all (and he fears his wife will be an ogre), but also he believes he is in love with another woman in Paris whom he was hoping to wed. Don't worry any of my book friends! She is only mentioned like twice in the beginning of the book. She never shows up or anything or causes any drama. She is simply background info and stays that way :D. So when Myles sees Fiona for the first time, he immediately is attracted to her and so it begins.
If I had to complain about anything in this story, it would have to be Fiona and how long it took her to give in to her feelings for Myles, but when she did, it was simply amazing. Myles never did give up in "wooing" her. I found that endearing. He would get upset and leave at times when Fiona had a certain reaction to his efforts and of course, he is a man and would say something and it would come out wrong, but I do have to say, this man was relentless. He figures if he is to have a wife and spend the rest of his days with her, that he wants her to be as pliant as possible, but then he ends up falling in love with her. I was glad that even when he could have doubted her when things are revealed towards the end, he didn't immediately count her out without hearing her side of things. At that point he was so in love with her anyway, it's like he didn't want to truly believe the worst.
I was really glad I gave this book a shot :) And maybe I'll look into this author's other work!!!

"Despise you? You, who I adore? You, who are giving me the greatest gift of all?" His hand slide forth to caress her abdomen and their child. "Fiona, this has been a rocky path we've traveled. But whatever forces brought you forth to me, I am sincerely grateful." He pulled her closer still. "And if it's truth we are professing, I'd have you know, if given the chance to change the past, I would wed you still."

If you like historical romance, enemies to lovers type of story, then this is your book.
This couple started off with a rocky start. The heroine, Fiona, who was around 20? I am guessing, is betrothed to er clan's sworn enemy, Myles. This is a problem because Fiona literally HATES the Campbell clan for she believes that his father, Cedric is who killed her mother all those years ago. The King has ordered this wedding to try to seek peace between the clans. Myles is upset for his own reasons. Yes, he doesn't like their clan at all (and he fears his wife will be an ogre), but also he believes he is in love with another woman in Paris whom he was hoping to wed. Don't worry any of my book friends! She is only mentioned like twice in the beginning of the book. She never shows up or anything or causes any drama. She is simply background info and stays that way :D. So when Myles sees Fiona for the first time, he immediately is attracted to her and so it begins.
If I had to complain about anything in this story, it would have to be Fiona and how long it took her to give in to her feelings for Myles, but when she did, it was simply amazing. Myles never did give up in "wooing" her. I found that endearing. He would get upset and leave at times when Fiona had a certain reaction to his efforts and of course, he is a man and would say something and it would come out wrong, but I do have to say, this man was relentless. He figures if he is to have a wife and spend the rest of his days with her, that he wants her to be as pliant as possible, but then he ends up falling in love with her. I was glad that even when he could have doubted her when things are revealed towards the end, he didn't immediately count her out without hearing her side of things. At that point he was so in love with her anyway, it's like he didn't want to truly believe the worst.
I was really glad I gave this book a shot :) And maybe I'll look into this author's other work!!!

This was a brilliant highland romance. Brogan takes the story of ‘marriage by order of the king’ and runs with it. She mixes romance, history, and battle scenes together to create an intriguing tale. She weaves together an intricate story and develops the land and scenery to support it.
The characters in this novel were well put together and developed in a manner that makes them seem real and believable. I really appreciated how the heroine was able to stand on her own, rather than being a meek heiress with others waiting on her. The male lead was also a well-rounded individual who was easy to like but that was not a pushover.
All in all this was an awesome trip back in time and a brilliant escape from reality.

It was an okay read.
Nothing spectacular happened.
No tug of the heart moment as you would normally expect from an arranged marriage.
No misunderstanding which was what I was hoping for upon reading Odette's name. It's like she didn't even exist. He was having a relationship with her but suddenly, she was out of the picture. No news or whatsoever.
The mystery behind her mother's death wasn't even intriguing. The suspect? meh.
The act treason was not hugely dealt until the last few chapters.
Overall, I'd say it wasn't a boring read, more like so - so.

HERO:
I really LOVED the hero, Myles Campbell, the eldest son of the Laird & Earl Campbell, and I thought his approach with Fiona was just perfect in every step of their relationship. I felt sorry for the warrior because although he was taken aback, and very attracted to Fiona (since the beginning), for her beauty and fiery spirit, he was also in for a rough ride due to her scorn. I liked his strong principle and belief in marriage. Once he said his vows, his mind was set toward Fiona and he left his previous love behind and put everything into making his marriage work. He was constantly trying different strategies to make Fiona warm up to him. Myles is was a strong, confident and humorous man who had a great depth for compassion and love. He was immensely patient with FIona as he worked hard to reach out to her and persuade her that their marriage was one worthy of love and happiness.
HEROINE:
Fiona was beautiful, passionate and fiercely loyal to those she loves, namely her family and clan. She was devastated to have to live with her sworn enemy and worse that her new father in law was responsible for her mother's death. Whenever I became annoyed with the way Fiona treated Myles (believe me her tongue had a sharp edge that could cut down any man), I thought about her pain which was palpable, as she mourned the death of her mother. It's hard to dispel years of being taught to hate.
However, when Fiona learns the truth surrounding her mother's death, she finally allows herself to love Myles, and her new family, and this part of the story is simply MAGIC. The love between the two is shared like a flood, and you just feel their absolute bliss and elation. The two give in to each other and there are moments of ecstasy, with steamy love and intimacy.
This story captured my attention from beginning to end. I was sad that it ended, but so relieved there was an epilogue. I would really LOVE to see this made into a series. There are many elements that just worked out so nicely in this story. This novel is very well written and enjoyable. There are many side characters to the leads who are wonderful and interesting. There is humor, persistent romance, great family moments, treachery, but also tragedy that make this a great, Scottish adventure.
By the way, the narrator was FABULOUS! I will be looking for other books narrated by Sarah Coomes…she's simply amazing and she really brought all of the characters to life. This was a nice little piece of delicious.
I will also be looking for other books by this author….I'm impressed.

This has such a lovely cover and I was hoping that the story inside would be equally appealing. Turned out that it didn't really do a lot for me though, unfortunately. Overall I'm left with a feeling of frustration.
Historical Romance, set in Scotland in the reign of King James. First problem: considering it's a period piece there doesn't seem to be a lot of actual History here. If the romance had been stronger I might have overlooked this but at least give me one or the other, if not both
Biggest problem however, was that I didn't actually like the leading lady, Fiona. She and Miles (from an opposing clan) are forced into marriage by Royal decree and it's hate on first sight (from her point of view) even though there's nothing actually wrong with Miles (or his family). He bends over backwards to try and make the marriage bearable for Fiona but she seems bratty for the sake of being bratty to him. Her family hated his family so by proxy she's going to make his life miserable, just because she can, not because he gives her any reason to. This goes on until well past the half way point by which time I was thoroughly sick and tired of Fiona and her constant negativity. Almost two thirds of the book before I got any romance, which incidentally was so sudden a change in attitude from Fiona that I got whiplash...
Instead of of hoping they'd sort out their differences and get it together I actually hoped Fiona would make a run for it or that Miles would ditch her. I don't think that's the desired reaction for a reader of romance. The story got a bit more interesting from that point on but by then it was too little, too late.

How did I ever miss this book?
2012? Also, why only one? Where has this author gone. This was great! It had romance, mystery, stellar historical settings & history & the characters were realistic for their times and it was steamy!

We meet the Cambells and Sinclair’s in the mid 1300s.
They despise each other. From a long ago love affair gone wrong to two clans vying and backing different kings.
But marry off these two King James does.
I loved Myles, he was supremely patient, and surprise.....kind.
Fiona was the tough cookie. Her mother had been murdered and she was raised in the knowledge that her new husband Myles Cambells father had done it. She fought that marriage and Myles for a good half of the book, but a long the way we watch them fall, and intrigue abound.
This book also had fabulous supporting characters.
My only complaint is why did the author stop? This book deserves many, many spin offs! Ahem, Robert? Anyway well done.

This was a very well written story. It was a Historical Romance. Gotta love those big, burly, & sexy Highlanders. So, two clans were enemies for many, long years. They decided they should finally try to make peace with one another. One clan offered the oldest sister to the other clan to be the Laird's bride. They both agreed and the two married. Surprisingly, the Laird accepted the situation and was really trying to make the best of it. She, however, would not allow herself to accept the truce with the Laird or anyone else in the clan. She, you see, had had it drilled in her head since she was a very young lass, that the clan were the enemy by her father....for killing their mother years ago.
The plot thickens, then thickens some more. Suspenseful indeed. Definitely worth it. A beautiful love story was born and an old score put to death.
This book is a Stand Alone. I was totally bummed out about that cuz I want more!! Oh well, we can't have everything.

It started a bit slow for me, but then turned quite enjoyable.
It has the often used trope of "Marriage by King", which I love, and the characters "hating" of each other for a while.
Thankfully it didn't have the screeching annoying bratty heroine you also find a lot in same type books, and it didn't have a total arsehat hero either. Both quite nice actually. So I enjoyed it very much.
It was a refreshingly smart highland romance.
It has the often used trope of "Marriage by King", which I love, and the characters "hating" of each other for a while.

Book Review-Highland Surrender Summary
Fiona Sinclair, is duty bound to marry the enemy of her clan, who was responsible for their mothers murder. The last thing she wants to do is marry the murders son, but King James has commanded it to happen, so in order to protect her clan. So Fiona goes ahead with marrying the enemy, never realizing that the enemy, Myles Campbell is not what she expected. Myles is frustrated that he is forced to marry a woman from a enemy clan, when he would prefer marrying a woman that he cares for. But when the King commanded this of him, he knew he must obey his King's decree, no matter how much he doesn't want to. his wife, Fiona, is furiating, stubborn and willful. She has a pride streak a mile wide, and is quite resistant to him, but he can't resist her, she is feisty and passionate. Two warriors of two seperate clans, forced into an alliance, and a union that will test their loyalty and honor and will the matters of the heart win...
The Hero
Myles Campbell is his fathers son, and as the eldest has always done what was commanded of him. He grew up with love from his parents who taught him honor and courage. Myles is a man that has been taught to lead, and takes command of every situation, and when he marries a willful lass, he is determined to reign her in. But he soon learns that his wife is not the typical highland lass, that she despises him, but there is a desire he feels for her despite her hatred of him and everything Campbell. Myles was a magnifiscent hero, and what a character he was. He was so patient with Fiona's antics, and loved seeing him so patient and understand of her, despite her "willful" nature. He is hardworking and has integrity.
The Heroine
Fiona Sinclair, has grown up with the hatred with the Campbells, even though she was once betrothed to Myles before her mother was killed. She is furious that her brothers are forcing her to marry a man she despises, and that they would throw her to the wolves. Fiona hates Myles and doesn't hold back anything from him. She is full of pride, willful and stubborn, and sees a traitor around every corner. She is quite hard headed at times, but she is also honest to a fault and acts on what she believes is the right thing. I had some issues with the heroine, but her actions were quite entertaining, and her character is definitely very spitited.
Plot and Story Line
This is the first book that I have read from this author, and I was able to read it in audio book format. It has been a little while since I have had the chance to read a audio book, and now that I have started it up again, I want to continue, I had forgotten how much I enjoy listening to audio books, especially since I do a ton of walking, but I decided to try this story out, and I just have a incredible weakness for a sexy highlander. I had no problem reading this one, and it didn't take me very long to get through it, and as a whole, I really enjoyed this one, but I did have some issues with it. Numnber one is the heroine, she really bothered me quite a bit. Now I love angsty romances, but this one I had a more difficult time with. She was pretty conceited, and not willing to compromise or work with Myles very well, and he was a angel compared to what she dished out. I just had so much sympanthy for the hero, because he was trying so hard to forget about the hatred between the clans, and accept their marriage. He understood that it wouldn't be roses and daisies, but he never gave up trying to make their marriage work. And even though he could get a bit impatient at times, he still came through as a honest and loyal soul that you just admire from the beginning. She does have hard feelings, and I understood why, but I had the hardest time fathoming why she could be so harsh at times, but don't worry, she isn't like this through all of it. She does redeem herself to me, and proves to be quite the heroine, and by the end I just ended up loving her character. What I found admirable about this story and the way that the author writes it, is the way she protrays human faults and attributes, how you see the positive and the negative. Other than this heroine, I had quite a fun time with this story. The narration was done really well, and she is very talented, and I loved the way she put in place the scottish brogue, which was a delighful touch. Highland Surrender is a love story that is about facing your fears and finding love when you least expect it. A story that test the dedication and loyalty to ones heart. If you love a good historical romance, with a fresh voice, this is a story you need to put at the top of your list. I do hope this author plans on more historical romances,
The Cover
I adored this cover, and ever since I first saw it last year, I wanted to pick up the story. I love her dress, so elegant and classy. And her hair is such a beauitful golden red, if only I could make my hair look that well done. I love the pose of the hero behind the heroine, and those shoulders--delicious.

I adored this cover, and ever since I first saw it last year, I wanted to pick up the story. I love her dress, so elegant and classy. And her hair is such a beauitful golden red, if only I could make my hair look that well done. I love the pose of the hero behind the heroine, and those shoulders--delicious.

in between 3 and 4 i thought its just be some bridgerton-esque trashy historical romance but like this actually had a good and exciting plot so

This story grabs you straight out of the gate, and doesn't slow down until the last twenty percent. This is a lovely story of a strong young woman who is wed against her wishes to a dashing young man of her clan's enemy. Fiona does not meekly accept her fate and proceeds to get her self in a pickle in a hurry. Myles, her husband didn't ask for this thankless duty either and is much put out at having to leave a love in France to return to marry this prickly, shrewish woman. The villains were Fiona's own brothers, though we learn early on that they are not of one mind in this or other things. John regrets having to sacrifice his sister for the "greater good" of their older brother's machinations.
I liked the pacing of the story, and was kept intrigued by a good bit of mystery within the story, (I did not pick out the true villain immediately). I enjoyed this author's voice, the tone just elegant enough to ring of old worlds. I was glad the author didn't give me reason to disrespect either character and loved the steamy romantic encounters they had once Fiona realized she had had the good fortune to marry a kind and generous man.
All in all I enjoyed this very much, if this author writes more historical's I will be sure to read them.

His eyes darkened. He smiled and shrugged the garment off his shoulders while she pulled at the sleeves. It fell away from his arms, and he plucked it from her hands to toss it aside.
Then he caught her face in both his broad hands and tipped it up. His grip was made of steel and yet gentle as a breeze. His lips hovered near hers. They drifted over her cheeks and eyes as if he could breathe her in.
All in all I enjoyed this very much, if this author writes more historical's I will be sure to read them.
