Highly recommend for high school or college freshmen, as a reading/writing guide for their phase of education, as well as recommended to teachers of introductory literature.
Pickering puts clearly into words the “culture” of reading—the things readers pick up on without thinking about it, laying them out so that others can train themselves to pick up on the various elements. His observations provided guidance to me as a reader and a teacher.
Another helpful feature of the book is the writing section, which includes sample papers in various stages. Samples are so helpful to my students, and I will definitely share these with them.
The only tip I have for this book is to update the section on MLA formatting to the 8th edition, as it differs significantly from the 7th, described here.
