I'm so bummed by this book. The title looked fun and I was expecting just a fun, humor filled romance.
Instead, I got a story that was filled with sexual innuendos such as calling parts of his anatomy "El Capitan" and lines along the following of "El Capitan will rise to the occasion." It was embarrassing to read. Then for some reason, the author would introduce characters that had nothing to do with anything and throw in a short unnecessary story line to go with it. The real story of the divorced couple and their ill child, completely fell flat. For me, the whole book was a flop. Bummed...don't know if I'll try this author again.

Free on kindle. This was not the fun story that I expected. Odd characters all over the place and an uninteresting story. I see many reviewers seem to love this author so maybe she just wasn't for me. I don't plan on reading her again.

Good book

This is book 2 in the "Return to Redemption" series. I can't wait to read book 3. Each book has it's own story, but has characters from previous books or books to be read in the series.

Samantha Rivera' has been divorced from her ex for a year now. They had so many problems and issues that the two of them couldn't resolve, so Samantha finally gave up and filed. Her ex, Nick Rivera' is Latino, and he has a very strong and dominant personality. He has always told Sam this is what's happening, so we are doing it. He doesn't sit down and talk things out. When he was promoted from Philadelphia to California, he listed the house with an agent without telling his wife, made airline reservations for the 3 of them, THEN came home and told Sam to pack up the house because they were moving to Beverly Hills, CA. Sam was livid. She told him that she and their daughter, Dani, weren't going anywhere and for him to go by himself. After the couple lost their baby boy, Michael, and Nick refused to have another baby with her every again, she was done. She then filed for a divorce. Dani is in remission from Leukemia, she has a great doctor taking care of her, and Sam trusts him 100%; so she's not leaving.

When Dani starts acting out, like normal teenagers do, She ignores her daily phone calls from her Dad, starts skipping classes, and begins lying to her mom and starts sneaking out at night. Sam has no choice but to call Nick and let him know what's going on.

Nick Rivera' hates being divorced. He wants his family back together. But he won't bend on having another baby with Sam, nothing will change his mind.

When he hears that Dani is up to no good and challenging her mom, he makes a decision to move back to Redemption permanently, job and all. What he doesn't expect is all the changes that has taken place over the past year. His daughter isn't a little girl anymore, Dani has a boy interested in her, his ex-wife is dating someone, and Sam is extremely independent; whereas for 14 years ago she relied on him for everything. He's not happy with the new changes, he'll never win Sam back at this point. Unless he can give her business advice with her custom made "Worry Pals" but she's already told him to back off once. That doesn't faze Nick.

Sam thinks he married her out of obligation because she got pregnant at 17 years old. But the truth is he's been in love with her since they were kids. She's always felt guilty because he gave up his music career for her, in fact she encouraged him to stay with his band. He took that as a sign that she didn't care about what he did when it came to groupies. But he never cheated on her.

What a couple. She didn't think he loved or cared about her and he thought that she married him because she was pregnant and it was easier this way. That's why she NEVER cared where he went at night after gigs.

Enjoy.

I really liked this book! I'd not read anything by Laurie Kellogg before but when it came up as a free download on Amazon I felt I had nothing to lose by getting it and the title intrigued me.

The storyline is a bit convoluted at times with a lot of secondary characters trying to take over (a bit like a bad soap opera!) but I felt the central characters were strong enough that this didn't matter too much to me.

So the story. Well let's see.

Hunky, possessive, Latino male who knows what to do with what nature gave him in the bedroom (and from the sound of it he got more than his share in the "manhood" department!)who ended up married to his brother's girlfriend after getting her pregnant and giving up his dream of being a rock star.

Said woman who is now his Ex-wife, but who he refuses to view as his Ex, who probably would have stayed married to him if he had let her have another baby and who still loves him as much as he still loves her. Whilst working as a pre-school assistant she has also come up with an idea for a special toy that will help sick children when they are in hospital to cope with their feelings.

Their 14yr old daughter who is in remission from leukaemia and, via the powers of the internet, realises that she may not make it to adulthood. With that in mind she is pushing all of her boundaries in an effort to live life to the full and experience everything now in case she doesn't live long enough to do them later.

So Dad is called in to help Mom cope with daughter and ..... well yes it's a bit predictable I guess but they get their second chance of a happy ever after, eventually.

I found this book extremely funny in places, had some steamy sex scenes and was generally, from my point of view, a good read.

I think this book is a great example of chick lit. It has just the right amounts of romance, conflict and sex. It's not explicit like some romance novels are, but it has just enough sex to keep it interesting.

It can be confusing who's who at times, but I just have to stop for a fraction of a second and think wait who's Haley again and then it clicks. I have been thinking of creating a little family tree of sorts to remind myself who's who in the town of Redemption. Kind of like a residence listing with a short description of who they are. So-n-so is so-n-so's sister who passed, parents are... and is tutoring/dating so-n-so. So-n-so is the HS guidance counselor. Wish me luck in finding time to do that!

I have really fallen in love with this town of Redemption. Laurie Kellogg's intricate and involved storylines make it realistic. It's never just one bad thing that happens at a time in real life and Kellogg doesn't shield us from the drama of the "real life" of Redemption. I like how she alludes to a past history and just gives us a taste so I'm eager to keep reading and find out just what did happen! The flashbacks don't take away from the story they are like puzzle pieces being fit into the big picture.

All in all, a good quick read! I'm glad I got this as a free download and I'm happy I took the time to borrow the first book in The Road to Redemption series A Little Bit of Deja Vu, also a good quick read. Now it's on to The Parent Pact.

SAMANTHA IS A VERY STUPID WOMAN, SHE HAS KNOWN HER HUSBAND SINCE CHILDHOOD BUT SEEMS CLUELESS ABOUT WHO HE REALLY IS. SHE MADE ME SICK IT WOULD SERVE HER DUMB-ASS RIGHT IF HE NEVER GOT BACK WITH HER. SHE SHOULD TRY HARDER TO BE A GROWN UP BUT HER UPBRINGING WON’T LET HER. STORY LINE WAS A BIT REPETATIVE BUT CUTE-N-SEXY ANYWAY. ;D

This book was ok. I loved Nick's character and liked Dani and Ryan too. Sam was a bit too whiney. The author went a bit overboard with the happy endings for everyone. There were moments that were laugh out loud funny which made it more enjoyable.

Wow you never want your child to get sick. When it destroys your marriage is just as bad. You then have lost part of your support. Sam and Nick are lucky to have a second chance at everything they wanted. So is there daughter.

Entertaining

Another well written story about a Redemption couple although the constant miscommunication gets frustrating when the characters are supposedly nature and intelligent.

Not a bad read but didn't blow me away. I haven't read in 7 months since losing my Dad and so I wanted something short that I could dip in and out of for a long road trip. This fit the bill. It all gets wrapped up a little too quickly and neatly in the epilogue for me.

This mostly fun book was slightly less predictable than some, although you knew who would end up with the leading woman from the beginning. There was too much detail in the sex scenes, but they didn't seem as obscene as some other novels. I can't say I loved the book, but I didn't hate it.

The Great Bedroom War is book 5 in the series by Laurie Kellogg. It is a run series to read and makes for enjoyable summer reading.
Nick Rivera returns from Los Angeles to try to reconcile with is ex-wife, Samantha and to be closer to his daughter, Dani. He still owns half interest in the house and has been paying the mortgage all along, so he sees nothing wrong with his sharing the house with Samantha and Dani.
Samantha loves Nick but believes he married her only because she was pregnant. He wants to control every aspect of her life and she resents this. His move to Los Angeles was the last straw. He took the job without consulting her and she does not want to leave Redemption and neither does Dani. She feels like he is a puppet master and she is the puppet. She wants to have another child but Nick doesn’t. He is afraid he will lose Samantha or the baby will have leukemia like Dani did. However, he does not tell Samantha what he is thinking. So, she divorces him. She is not pleased with his reappearance nor with his moving in with her. There are only two places for him to sleep- the sofa or her bed!
Dani is their thirteen year old daughter. She has just returned to school after being home schooled for three years while she fought leukemia. None of the students nor teachers know about her leukemia, only the school counselor and principal know. She hasn’t even told her best friend Haley. She has just started to fall for Ryan Fuller. Ryan isn’t doing well at school and is absent a lot. Without finding out why, Samantha tries to get Dani to break up with him. Nick sees that if they try to break them up, Dani will just be stubborn enough to do something drastic.
Can this family find way back together or will they completely shatter?

This was really "The Great War." The Bedroom part was mostly in the numerous flashbacks! The over abundant amount of flashbacks hindered me from developing any continuity in the plot. Also, there were too many other characters & couples to keep track of, it was more like a soap opera. It seemed like it was one act after another of a jackass making decisions for his ex-wife that gets her so upset that he is making all the decisions, that you begin to wonder if this is really going to have a happy ending. It is hard to believe that anyone as intelligent as the author paints him to be, that at some point he doesn’t figure out to present the info and let her think about it and decide on her own! [Which he finally did!]
When Adam gave Sam the ring, I almost quit reading, but at that point I had invested so much time that I continued. And I’m so happy I did. The revelations in that last chapter had me tearing up and outright crying with enjoyment because of the emotions the characters were revealing about themselves and their feelings for each other, some of which had purposely been hidden for the wrong reasons and had contributed to many of their past problems.
Because of the 2 negatives mentioned at the first of this critique and because I felt cheated for enduring 7/8ths of the book before getting to the fantastic part, and, being a romantic myself, wanting to read more about this really romantic stuff, I only gave it 4 stars. If halves were available, I would have made that 4 ½ Stars. Having said all that, I would highly recommend that you read it.

This book is a view into the lives of another family in Redemption, Pennsylvania. Samantha is a divorced preschool aid with a teenaged daughter, Dani, who is in remission for leukemia. Nick is her ex who currently lives in California but moves back to Redemption when Sam tells him he needs to be closer to his daughter so he can help Sam take care of and watch over her.

Sam and Nick have been divorced for a short time. Sam doesn’t realize it yet but she’s still in love with her ex and she wishes he loved her as much. Nick has loved Sam from the moment they slept together 15 years ago and hopes he can convince Sam to take him back.

Comedy ensues as well as some drama when Nick moves back to Redemption (into the house with Sam and Dani). These two characters will frustrate you with their banter back and forth and then you’ll turn the page and be laughing.

There are some really serious moments when it seems like Sam and Nick are thisclose to admitting to each other they’re still in love with one another. Then Nick does something Sam considers stupendously stupid to make her angry with him.

This really was an enjoyable book. You’re pulling for Sam to keep her independence and yet you hope Nick finds a way to convince Sam they belong together.

This was a fun enjoyable read; there are some serious issues that are addressed in a non threatening way that did not take away from the lighthearted feel of the story. Nick and Sam were going through something that I think most couples face, lack of communication. I always find it funny comparing what they said versus what they were thinking. I have to admit, Sam often got on my nerves with some of her behavior because I truly felt that Nick had no clue on many of the issues regarding his behavior, however, Sam admitted to playing games. I often found that Ryan and Dani were more mature and insightful than Dani's parents. This is the third book that I have read from this author and I have enjoyed them all. I know that this is the 2nd book in the Redemption Series, and I had already read books 3 and 4 prior to reading this one, but it did not take away from my enjoyment or ability to follow the story. I can now see how some of the characters were mentioned in other editions of the series, but it did not take anything away from reading them out of order. This author has an easy style of writing that draws you in and gets you vested in the characters and the storyline. You will enjoy this read.

I'm still reading this book. And I admit I read book 4 before this book 2. And while they can be stand alone books, I really like consistency in names.

In this book Casey (from book 4) is Casey Olsen but in Book 4 she's Casey McIntyre. And no - the name change was not due to marriage or divorce from what I can see. In Book 4 Casey had never been married. Doesn't make sense. I like the names to stay the same.

OOOOOKay. I finished this book rather painfully. I read books 4&5 and loved them. This one was tedious. The premise was just so boring and the book was stuck. Nick wants Samantha back. She thinks he doesn't love her. Over and over and over again. The secondary character development wasn't as great as books 4 & 5 either. I think it's that portion though that makes me rate this lower than the others. The weaving back and forth between storylines (especially in book 4) is what kept me not wanting to stop reading. I would be hooked. With this book I'd find myself reading the same paragraph over multiple times cause I was not hooked. Bummer :( I had high hopes.

Samantha Rivera was a divorced mother of a teen daughter; she was trying to move, but she wasn’t entirely over her ex.

Nick didn’t want a divorce, but his accepting a new job in a new town without telling his wife was the final signature on the papers. As a Latino, he was raised to man up and take care of his family no matter what.

Their teen daughter has a tendency to get sick and has been acting out, being a real brat. It could have something to do with her lack of a male role model. Well, that was just another incentive Nick needed to return home. The two must set their differences aside to do what’s best for their daughter, but Nick hopes that this will be his golden chance to get his family back.

I thought this was pretty good. I liked the personable effect from the characters, but the overall story got long-winded and overly complicated with the history and various characters.

This was an okay returning love story. It was obviously meant to tug at the readers’ heartstrings with the child’s illness and love lost. But, for me, this was mildly amusing.

This book was a great bore. I'm sorry to the author who probably spent a lot of time on this but there were just too many story lines to follow. I lost track of who was pregnant with who's baby, who was getting married, divorced or dying. And I didn't find it at all steamy like the other chick lit books I read. It took me so long to read this book due to the unattraction I felt to the male character. I don't know if it's my taste in men or how annoying this character seemed. The whole premise of "latino pride" and naming his male parts just threw me off. There were no "moments" for me in this book just torture. I think the only character I minded reading about was Sam and Nicks daughter Dani. I was interested in her illness and how she was going to progress.

If you want to read a book about a couple that gets divorced after 14 years of marriage due to horrible communication skills- go ahead. If you're looking for a book with steamy hot men and love scenes- go somewhere else.

I am not really that great with expressing myself via written word but I LOVED this book, as well as all of Laurie's other books. She has the ability to weave a really nice love story, fiction and spicy romance without you even realizing it. I look forward to the turn of every page and it only took me 4 days, while doing other things, to finish as usual. Sam, the woman in the story is such a wonderful person. She was strong and loving and so easy for me to like. Nick, the man in the story was real. Made mistakes like men do but made you love him dispite those mistakes.
If you are looking for a good story, thats a quick read I would recommend this book as well as any of Kellogg's others.

I enjoyed this story. However there were times when I was confused. I mean there are just SO MANY CHARACTERS. I don't know how many times I had to stop and reread the paragraph because I couldn't remember who exactly the person was in relation to the story. And i have a hard time believing that Sam felt that Nick was too controlling and made her feel like a whore because he hade her come like 5 - 6 times before he actually screwed her. Really??? Can I have him? He can control me anytime. Oh, and not to mention the over the top, fluffy happy ending. I mean everyone ends up super happy and super successful and don't forget multi-millionaires.
Anyways, I may not sound like it but I did enjoy it and really liked the characters even if the story was predictable and unbelievable.

I really liked the storyline of this book. Nick and Samantha are divorced but still love each other. They have had a lot of tragedy in their lives and they still haven't dealt with most of it. Nick moves back into Sam's house so he can help and spend more time with their teenage daughter. You can't help but like Sam because she is hard working mother and loves her daughter so much. Nick is just a dream except he doesn't talk about his feelings. Watching them deal with their daughter was humorous at times but heart wrenching due to her being sick. I really enjoyed this book and loved the epilogue so you get to see a glimpse into Nick and Sam's future but also their daughter Dani. Great book looking forward to reading more in this series.

I'm not really sure about this book. Maybe this wasn't as entertaining as the rest, even if they weren't spectacular either, because it just felt like reading through someone's life.

It's all about misunderstanding and not getting what the other person really wanted. It's like sending your husband out for mayonaise & he brings home Miracle Whip. He wasn't listening & then says "I was just trying to do the right thing... I can never do the right thing for you & all you want to do is kick him to the curb for not listening in the first place.

It's the same old boring thing with ups & downs & to fix it all the author gives them a great sex life... Oh well.

This was a hard book to rate because I didn't love it but I didn't hate it either. I thought the plot was good, and I liked the writing style even though the book seemed a bit slow. I think what killed it a bit for me what the h, Sam. No matter what Nick did, she was never happy with him. She was so proud and stubborn that she would try find ulterior motives in everything little thing he did for her. I felt like she was very self-absorbed and everything had to be about her. It drove me nuts. I couldn't understand why so many guys seemed to like her when her personality was just annoying. Other than the pace and an annoying heroine, I liked the actual story.

Absolutely fantastic

Wonderfully written. Laurie Kellogg knows how to write about the dynamics of families struggling through hard times, while still showing the humor families need in those same times. I have read several books in this series and have loved them all. She takes me from laughter to tears and back to laughter every time. This series full of feel good reads with strong, likeable characters and situations that are dealt with by people everyday. A must read for anyone who enjoys reading.
