Disturbances

Nothing is quite as it seems in this collection of otherworldly short stories.

How does Percival Prendergast transform himself from a meek loner into the world's greatest horror writer?
What did Horatio Winstanley witness in Eastern Europe that affected his whole life and that of his great nephew?
Which of his two futures did Jaysun choose?

Always compelling, sometimes touching and occasionally disturbing, these are stories that will stay with you.

Having already sampled this author’s work in an anthology I did not hesitate in purchasing Disturbances. I was unprepared however for the talent of this new author.
Short stories can be difficult as one has so little time in which to engage the reader but Jenny cracked it time and time again. Every one of the 7 tales drew me in and held me captive until the end . The characters were diverse and interesting and I really warmed to the guest at the ghost wedding and the enigmatic clockmaker. The plots unique and beguiling included futuristic themes as well as more traditional blood curdling twist in the tale thrillers.
Such was the talent of the author that she did not have to resort to violence or bloodshed to chill the reader, the suspense and thrills were subtle and crept up on me as the stories progressed . Not a single word or sentence was wasted, each and every one added to the totality of the story and many of them will remain with me for some time to come. Jenny Shaw is certainly an author to watch out for.

As I review all books I am going to review this but you must take into account that it's written by my daughter. However, I apply the same criteria to her work as to other people's. I found the stories all rather different but all with that slightly quirky, disconcerting element that I enjoy so much. The first, The Ghost Wedding, is a favourite. It makes you wonder! I also enjoyed Fade, set in a cyber environment. Again, what if...? There's a time travel story too, in The Clockmaker.

I found the writing to be consistently good, clear and concise and it put you rapidly in the action. The stories are immaginative and I would be very happy to read more of this quality.

I thought this was a superb collection of short stories and each one was beautifully written.

My favourite was, The Ghost Wedding. The initial scene was set up wonderfully and the atmosphere was just right. I felt like I was in the room with them, gathering around uncle, eagerly waiting for him to begin!

There wasn’t one story I didn’t enjoy though. Each one was completely different to the others in so far as the stories were concerned. However, there was a thread running through them all which I really enjoyed. And that was suspense. I felt the author did a superb job of building the tension in each story,
Very, very enjoyable.

I absolutely adore short stories and Shaw has crafted a truly fantastic selection in this collection. They are all expertly written and the plots are well thought out and stitched together with perfection. I couldn't recommend this more.

A collection of short stories that leave you shivering but wanting more. I particularly like the creepy ‘Lantern Procession’, the clever ‘The Clockmaker’ and the deeply disturbing ‘This is the story of Percival Prendergast’. Good cover, too!

A great selection of well written and engaging stories that beautifully suit the mood if you're looking for dark and twisty.
I found the time travel story particularly thought provoking.
