Object #1

Object 5

Rate this book
Floating World Comics is proud to republish the out-of-print Object 5, the first monograph of illustration and graphic design work by Swedish artist, Kilian Eng. This new edition is a European album hardcover printed at the same size as Object 10. We have also included 16 new pages of artwork to make this the definitive collection of Kilian’s early work.

Kilian’s images present alternate worlds where the environment plays a great role. Many of these sequences present visual stories, without any text. This is connected to his growing interest in theatrical mise-en-scène and set design for film. He is fascinated with the details that can create these imaginative worlds; colors and lighting, dimensions and sounds. His inspiration comes from classic and futuristic architecture, surrealism, science fiction, as well as the different elements and shapes in natural and urban landscapes. Although this book is non-narrative the images flow in a way that takes the reader on a journey through Kilian’s worlds.

Eng's technique and his command of the medium are incredible. fascinating imagery worthy of much contemplation and many sighs.

although these three images are my favorites, they actually don't offer a good representation of the art contained in Object 5. many of Eng's pieces are more playful, more bizarre, featuring individuals turned into colorful objects and comic book hallucinations. but many of these pages also illustrate some lonely figure, frequently attired as Scaramouche (or perhaps his rival, the Harlequin), crossing some strange and wondrous and fearful land. tiny figures overshadowed by alien landscapes or by huge, sinister faces that look somewhere beyond - usually away from the traveler. one gets a sense of the smallness of a single person, alone and moving through space and time, fate unknown. a person is a such a small and fragile thing when compared to the universe - such a hapless, clownish little thing.
