Descended from ancient shapeshifters, Hardane could take on wolf form to stalk the darkness. But as a man he had long, sinfully black hair and a body to entice any woman.
He appeared to Kylene in her dreams, then rescued her from certain death at the executioner's hand. He was promised to another, his marriage destined to end the brutal warfare between their two peoples. But no matter what the danger, no matter who tried to stop them, he would spirit her into the night and tempt her with a love like no other. . .
Just finished this one, and have to say, I am constantly amazed at the critisisms launched by book reviewers....such as, it didn't bring anything new to the field. Ummmm, books have been written for thousands of years, there are no NEW stories, only variations on a theme...look closer, no matter what the story, it's all been told before. When I read a book, I want to be entertained, taken somewhere other than MY reality, and in this book, Amanda/Madeline succeeded admirably! I loved this story, loved the heroine, loved the hero, and the story held me captive all the way through. Yes, you know it's going to work out, and maybe you have an idea of HOW it's going to work out, but what matters, at least to me, is that the getting there kept you interested, right to the end, and this book did that for me. It is definitely a keeper, and I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in paranormal fantasy w/a medieval feel to it. Great read!!
It was fantasy/paranormal with a medieval feel to the alternate universe.
I probably should have given it 1 star because I had to make myself finish it, but I always feel too guilty giving out 1 star.
The first half of the book was all about: Is Kylene the destined mate of Hardane? Well, obviously, since they are the hero and heroine, so it didn't need to drag out for half the book. It was boring! And when the question was finally answered, it was anti-climatic. I expected way more drama and suspense.
The second half of the book was basically about staying out of the clutches of the villain (The Interrogator) and escaping his clutches when they fell into them. Seriously pointless and I couldn't understand why the villain couldn't have been taken out sooner.
I read the Kindle edition in a couple of days. Kylene is being held captive in an apparent case of mistaken identity when the shade of Hardane, heir to the throne of Argone, appears to her. She is later rescued and the adventure begins.
Typically I find Amanda Ashley's books a little heavy handed when it comes to the whole soulmates and HEA endings, but in this case it really works. Kylene is not your typical tough as nails heroine, as she admits to being afraid and sometimes ...gasps... actually acts selfishly or pridefully. Likewise, Hardane while brave, handsome and strong appears to be both sensitive and fallible.
PROS : solid character development, action-packed, interesting plot twists, cover model CONS: unfortunately said action often bookended by sex scenes (makes you wonder if villains are waiting for them to finish prior to attacking), some of the subplots fail to advance the story and some of the minor characters seem superfluous, although maybe this is a set -up for their own stories later Fans of Maggie Shayne, Christine Feehan (Dark series) and Lynsay Sands' historical romances will probably love this one. Content : portrayals of violence including bloodshed and battle, attempted rape, mild descriptions of sexual intercourse
I picked this up from the library on a whim, and that's about as much investment as this book merits. The perspective constantly changes from one character to another in a confusing jumble, new plot elements are introduced suddenly and without motivation or foreshadowing, the protagonist is passive and uninspiring and the plot twists are predictable cliches. That said, it's fine for a casual read in the fantasy-romance genre. It just doesn't bring anything new to the field.
