not a nice Mary Poppins....watch "Saving Mr. Banks" and see how Mary is mean and gruff as PL Travers. If you want to feel good watch the movie! Not for kids or adults. Disney made her loveable, no wonder the author hated the movie. I'm sure I'm not the only one who read the book hoping she'd be like Julie Andrews---not

Well, it's Mary Poppins! Wish she had been around 10 years before I read it when our son was born!

I found this ancient paperback copy in a box of my childhood books in my basement. Now I’m not sure if I ever actually read this book. I know I LOVED the movie, so that’s probably why I got the book. Reading it now, I am put off by how unpleasant and mean Mary Poppins is to the children and the unnecessary racial stereotypes and labels used, not only in the since revised “Bad Tuesday” chapter, but peppered throughout the book. Rarely do I prefer a book to a movie, but in this case, stream the video if you want to share this story with youngsters.

The movie is much better.

I was also surprised to find out that I have an early edition of the book, which includes the only slightly edited edition of the Bad Tuesday chapter, rather than the wholly revised edition from the 1980s. The casual racism sure was something else.

My favourite chapter was the one about the twins (who are understandably absent from the Disney film, and I had no idea existed until picking up this book) growing up and losing their abilities to speak with nature

2017 Review: Bumping this up to 4 stars after reading it again as an adult. Book Mary Poppins is definitely different than movie Mary Poppins, but Sophie Thomas does such an excellent job with the audiobook that I was trying to keep myself from laughing aloud at work at some points.

Definitely not the Disney movie, but still thoroughly enjoyable. Each chapter was a little adventure unto itself. I'm not sure if my favorite part was Andrew refusing to come home without his friend or Jane's confusion over the paper stars, or even the Twins adamant refusal to admit they would forget how to understand the universal language.

Absolutely charming. Mary Poppins is an incredibly funny character. Having grown up with the movie, I enjoyed the differences between it and this book.
