The Hounds of Set is a Silver Recipient of the Mom's Choice Awards.
Young Alex Chronos always wanted his life to matter. Other than having the full attention of the school bully, he was virtually invisible. He longed for adventure, but adventure, it seemed, never happened his way. That was all about to change.
On the night of his thirteenth birthday, Alex is terrified at the sight of a cloaked figure lumbering on his doorstep. But it isn't the stranger that should worry him. A mysterious package left by the stranger turns his unassuming world upside down. In his quest for answers, Alex finds himself an unwilling traveler through time and space. Suddenly alone in ancient Egypt, surrounded by hot desert sands, the real adventure begins; only things weren't what he'd imagined. His only desire now is to find his way back to his own comfortable world. It seems Egypt has other plans.
This is an adventure book for tweens set primarily in an ancient Egypt in which gods are real and responsible for the everyday life of the people. A miserable 13-year-old boy from a seacoast town in America is suddenly transported through time and space to find himself held prisoner with the god Anubis as Set has trapped and hidden away Osiris and turned Egypt into a place of death and misery. It is up to Alex and Anubis to free themselves, defeat Set, and deliver Egypt. I think this would be a very enjoyable book for a young person. The story is engaging even if a little repetitive in spots. I found myself anxiously trying to predict how they would escape Set's hounds and defeat a seemingly unstoppable god. The book ends satisfactorily but sufficiently open-ended to prepare for the next book in the series.
I got this book through Goodreads giveaway program. When it came in the mail and I saw the cover, I thought, "Poor guy has to self-publish his book, hope it reads ok." I read through the first part and it just seemed like he was trying to hard. Not much flow, quite a bit of clunky description. Still, I figured I could probably hand it over to my kids and they might like it. After the whole time travel thing, the book got much worse. Anubis (who speaks only in capital letters) and Set and a dungeon full of body parts. Gross! After he used said body parts in a little science experiment to escape, I realized there was no way I wanted to waste my time reading any further, nor would I be giving it to my children. Sorry, but this book gets two thumbs down.

I read this book because my nephew told me "I had to read...it's awesome". I really enjoyed it. It was full of action & adventure. What I really enjoyed was that the author took to time to develop the character and allow me to really get to know him. I also loved the development of the friendship between Alex & Anubis. As for the action - it is nonstop and the descriptions were so good, it felt like I was watching a movie. I hope there are more adventures for Alex, I will definitely read.
