Pacific Northwest private detective Scotia MacKinnon is hired by the victim's brother to investigate the "accidental" death of Tina Breckenridge, a sailing instructor, who supposedly drowned near her abandoned boat, following a trail of frustrating dead ends, threats, and crime as she and her assistant retrace Tina's final moments. Original.
This is the second book in the Scotia MacKinnon series, and I like it even better than the first. I quite enjoy watching the ever professional and competent P.I. Scotia work a case. She is pragmatic and smart and just feels like a real person. The mystery was an interesting one and although I had kind of worked out what was going on it was still fun to see how Scotia figures it out. The story really picks up speed towards the end to a particularly well-done conclusion. All in all, a great addition to the series and I can't wait to read the next one!
I really enjoyed this book, set on San Juan Island, not all that far from where I live. The descriptions of the area (and the weather!) ring true. I found the main character, Scotia MacKinnon very engaging, and look forward to finding more books in this series.
When Tina Breckenridge disappears, supposedly drowned, her brother doesn't believe it, and hires Scotia to find out the truth. As Scotia digs into Tina's life and past, and the people connected to her, she discovers secrets — secrets that someone is willing to kill to keep from being revealed.
Not the best mystery I've read lately, but I thouroughly enjoyed references to the setting and area (San Juan Islands and adjacent BC area). This was also pleasant read following other gruesome murder mysteries I have delved into recently. I will look for Duncan's other books- Entertaining, quick reads. I will keep my eyes open for the author the next time I am in Friday Harbor!
