This volume brings this run of the New Mutants to an end and it was pretty great. After this book, Sam and Bobby get delusions of grandeur and swan off to join the Avengers.

It's a shame the writers didn't bring Illyana and Rahne back, even if it was just for the final issue wrap party. Oh, well, whatever, never mind...

Jumping straight from a dystopian future to an alternate reality, I don’t think that DnA could have hit a more overdone X-Men theme. Nonetheless, they manage to carry it off, with a storyline that remains engaging and fun. I also loved the fact that they really highlight some traditional elements from the classic New Mutants, including the Hellions and a 50th issue “House Party” which feels like a reply to “Slumber Party” way back in the original #21.

I’m really sad to see this new series go, but on the other hand I got 50 more issues of the original New Mutants that I’d never thought to see again!

This was a fitting end to a series I enjoyed reading. While there were was many ups as downs in New Mutants thanks to it being included in too many events, the characters were likable and younger X-Men is a good focus for any story. This story arc not only wraps up the series nicely but wisely ups the stakes and builds off of many previous story threads in a satisfying way. The fact that this is another time travel story is icing on the cake as those have been among the best in New Mutants that I've read. Dan Abnett did a good job taking over this book and put together a solid run. This last set of issues included some of my favorite art in the entire series. It has a bit more shading to it and looks slightly darker but the characters are drawn extremely well in addition to that. If you like the X-Men, this book is certainly worth giving a read even if it doesn't stand among the best books in superhero comics.

Continuing the great x-read of 2017/2018... (and I am very far behind on reviews again so this batch will once again be short. One of these days I will get back to reviewing each volume as I finish them so they don't all sort of start bleeding together in my head as they tend to do.)

Is it strange that I am sad to see a subpar series end?

This volume ties some nice bows on ongoing stories and mangles some others trying too quickly to wrap them up - I'm assuming the series was cancelled with short notice?

Anyway, it isn't awful and I am going to miss reading about these characters together. (As a side note, man do I hate when they put X-characters on an Avengers team but I always prefer my x-books when they are keeping themselves separate from the rest of the Marvel universe...)

Like most of the X-books heading into the post-AvX relaunch, a bit of an abrupt ending to a genuinely intriguing status quo (I'm still not sure I buy Nate Grey's presence, but the idea of, essentially, a New Mutants hangout book is great). Setting up Future Doug as the big bad of this arc is one way to tackle the "Doug Ramsey Problem"; I'm not sure if it works, but it does lead to some fun & relatively unique time travel shenanigans. Art is workmanlike with enough Sienkiewiczian touches (esp. in the Future Doug issues) to make it interesting.

Abnett & Lanning's New Mutants ends with a whimper. We get an interesting time travel/alternate future tale but sadly it deals with my least favorite team member, Doug Ramsey. The promise of a crossover with The Defenders doesn't materialize like it should. The plot was okay but it never seemed as grim as it should have. The art wasn't great and didn't add to the story. Overall, this isn't the best example of how great this team can be.

Marvel really dropped the ball on the last year or two of this book. I had such high hopes, and it started off pretty well - but by the time this instillation came alone, it was toast and being rushed towards its cancellation.
It's especially hard when your favorite characters are treated this way. I hope Marvel does right by the New Mutants again someday.

This final volume of Abnett and Lanning's New Mutants draws on previous storylines to create one last arc that brings everything to a neat conclusion. The first arc, Fear the Future, works a little better than the second, Fight The Future, with some more cohesive storytelling whilst the latter suffers from a rather rushed conclusion. The final issue ends everything well, looking back on all of DnA's run on the book and even tying up a few loose ends to make for a satisfying ending. Artistically, Leandro Fernandez's art is much more palatable than the scratchy Felix Ruiz, and whilst neither are particularly memorable, their work is serviceable and always easy to understand, if a little dark at times. The New Mutants don't really go out with a bang, but neither do they go out with a whimper; just an enjoyable end to an enjoyable run.

Randomly found these single issues in a box of stuff I have at the library.

This arc was entertaining, but man, the New Mutants have all the weird characters. I really liked Dani Moonstar, though, and I would definitely enjoy reading more about her.
