SPOILER ALERT:

Jade Cannon is described as a smart, pretty girl that is unpopular and picked on by the "mean girls". The head of the "mean girls" is Gloria, whom Jade describes as a "bitch". Gloria picks on Jade almost every single day and for no reason at all. Gloria is at the center of this story and in the very beginning of the book, Jade consoles her best friend Heidi in the bathroom and leans to close to the sink. By doing such, she gets her jeans wet, but doesn't realize this. Jade and Heidi arrive to class late and their teacher wants to know why they are late. Gloria raises her hand and says that Jade is late because she peed her pants. Jade is humiliated as the whole class laughs at her and for the rest of the day, she is snickered at by everyone. Jade has a major crush on Trace, but doesn't think he could ever like her like she likes him because he is popular and hangs out with Gloria. Throughout the story, Trace tells Jade he wants to be with her, but she lets her fears of Gloria get in the way.

This book reminded me of the movie "She's All That". Throughout the whole story I was just waiting for Trace's attraction and love for Jade to be part of a dare, and was thoroughly surprised when that wasn't the case. This book definitely kept my attention and it was hard to put down. This book was enjoyable, but also made me mad at Jade. Jade cared too much of what people thought of her and she had absolutely no self-esteem. She let Gloria's meanness and evilness get into her head and in turn, she pushed away all the people that loved her. Finally, Jade starts to see her self worth and realizes that the people that love her are always going to love her no matter what she looks like.

With all that being said, I enjoyed reading this book and think that it is best for eighth graders and above because of the story line and the cuss words that are present throughout the book. This is a great book to read about bullying and the danger of "gossip". I give this book 3.5 out of 5 stars.

I'm a sucker for cliche but cute romantic comedies, and I think this books truly had potential to be just that.

But the one thing that really kept me from liking the book was Jade, the main character. She infuriated me with the HUGE chip on her shoulder and her CONSTANT hot/cold attitude. Don't get me wrong, I totally understand where she's coming from. To be bullied like that in school, every day for years, would suck the life out of everyone. But I had expected her to be a scared, insecure mouse that found the strength to fight back. Not the dramatic, moody, bitchy psycho that jumps down someone's throat at every single thing - whether good or bad.

The book's saving grace was Trace. What a sweet, sweet guy. What a big dummy (an adorable one) to put up with such drama - from Gloria and from Jade. He was always there for Jade, no matter how badly she treated him the day before. And to go through with it over and over again. Sigh, I need to find myself a guy like that.

Having said that, I don't mind a book being cliche if it's at least entertaining. In this case, I think Gloria was a bit too over the top, and the whole gossip web was a bit too extreme. I think if Charters had toned it down just a bit, it would make for a more realistic high school situation.

I am interested to see Charters' other works and any future works since her debut young adult novel was clearly written to elicit strong emotions from readers. I just wish I connected to the main character more, and in this case, she just gave me a major headache and several bald spots from having to pull my hair out.

Note: I was given a copy of book in exchange for my honest review. A special thanks to the author for offering me the opportunity to read this book.

This book is similar to some of the books I have read before, but not identical. Charters uses an array of information and details about the characters to make you feelike you are connected with the characters. I would consider this book a quick and easy read. To classify the genre, it would have to be realistic fiction.
The way Charters writes, makes you not want to put the book down. I was up till 1:30am last night reading it. I wanted to find out about what was happening between Trace and Jade. Also, there's the sneaking suspension of Jade being kinda paranoid about everything. it shows that she has been hurt way to much, and is scared to let people into her heart.
One of the downsides to this book, is that there are a few misspelled words. I understand that we all miss words sometimes, but when you're reading a book it kind of throws your brain off the tracks.
Another suspecting thing that will most likely nag at the back of your brain the whole book, is what did Jade ever do to Gloria. There has to be some resentment or jealousy somewhere. It's one of those questions that flows through your mind while reading this book.
I would give this book a 4out of 5, because of the suspense of always wanting to know more abou the book, but the misspelled or non placement of words really threw me off sometimes. Anyways, it was overall a really good book and I would recommened it to people.

2.5 Stars

First, I would like to thank the author for giving me a copy of her debut novel in exchange for an honest review. Initial I was going to give The Gossip Web a 3/5 but 2.5 just felt better.

The Gossip Web, all in all, was a cute story. Jade Cannon (the ordinary unpopular girl) is head over heels for the most popular guy in school, Trace Gibson. How do the “populars” feel about this? Well, they hate it and are determined to make Jade's life a complete nightmare. Will Jade be able to overcome her low self-esteem and seize the day? To find out, you’ll have to read The Gossip Web.

Trace’s personality grabbed me from the start. Even though he is what every girl in West Havenbrook High dreams about, he’s down to earth, funny, and you just can’t help but like him. He has a witty charm, and with Charters wonderful description, I could actually see that adorable grin.

The storyline was really cute, and at times I found myself blushing and my heart fluttering right along with Jade. However, it was also the character of Jade that lost me. Her emotions were so all over the place that I just couldn’t relate to her and with the constant jumping around, I found it hard to actually connect and feel what she was feeling. She never stuck on one emotion long enough for me, as a reader, to care about her or what she was going through.

I also found that Jade did a lot of internalizing, which in most cases helps readers to connect, but it was all very repetitive and by time I hit the mid-way mark, I really felt like I was reading the same things over and over again, and even her thoughts were very hot and cold.

As a debut novel, I think that Charters did a great job, and this is a fantastic start, but the overall story and editing could still use some work. If you are looking for a quick “boy meets girl and falls in love” kind of story than The Gossip Web would be worth a read.

Well... It was hard to make it through this one!! I like the idea of the storyline... Typical cliche, not popular girl hopelessly in love with the popular guy. But in this case, said girl comes across as bipolar or something. Too much repetitiveness. Very wordy when it came to voicing her thoughts. The writing was okay and the authors style of writing was okay, but this book is in serious need of some editing. Editing doesn't usually bother me, but for some reason this book is filled with 3/4 signs. (I read a kindle ebook on my iPhone). That was completely annoying!!
