One girl. Her boat. An ocean of sand to cross.

Norah’s desert world has always been treacherous, with the roiling ocean of sand, giant scorpions, and brutal sandstorms—but now an unnatural famine plagues the desert nations and threatens to destroy all.

Despite being the only one in her village without a sand gift, Norah is chosen with her best friend, Zadock, to sail across the ocean of sand in search of the legendary moonstone, an artifact that could end the famine.

As Norah and Zadock set off on their journey, secret romantic feelings each has suppressed for years rise to the surface. Love weakens sand gifts, and if they act on their feelings, Zadock's sand gift will disappear.

DNF @ 5% or pg. 15 | Clean Fiction - Fantasy

I’ve been attempting to read this book for a while, but I think it’s ultimately just not my thing. For one, I’m not big into the desert or sand and that’s a major part of the book. At the beginning, it felt like I was jumping into the middle of the book and I had a hard time understanding what was happening. Things would probably get better with time, but I don’t think it’s my cup of tea, personally and unfortunately.

Main Content from the little bit I read-
All except our main character have Sand powers to do things like build with sand or move sand (both very helpful in a world surrounded by sand); Love and being in love with someone diminishes someone's gift however;

There's a couple mentions of a moon goddess and praying to her.

FMC has a major crush on her best guy friend and she notices his appearance, warmth, and nearness (up to a couple sentences), but tries to snap herself out of it because of the whole 'love-weakens-someone's-powers' thing.

Clean YA Fantasy

One girl. Her boat. An ocean of sand to cross.

Seventeen year old Nora lives on a plateau surrounded by rolling oceans of sand, (yes a literal sand ocean 😳) deadly scorpion’s, and brutal sandstorms. Everyone has a sand gift except for her. Her best friend is Zadock, and unfortunately that’s all they can ever be, despite what either one of them wants. Love weakens the gifts. There is a famine that has been shaking their lands for 3 years and if that’s not enough the To’Morat are attacking other plateaus to survive and are quickly closing in on hers. Without any sand gifts Nora feels hopeless and desperate to help. She does however, have the knowledge of the stars and knows how to sail the sands. She and Zadock may be the only hope to save their people and are sent alone on a quest across the sands to find the missing moonstone… as long as they don’t let their feelings for one another get in the way.

This was such a unique read. The magic system was cool and characters were likable. I gotta say, this author must have been tasting sand for weeks as she was writing it. It was fully immersive- I felt like I was in the desert and in the sand storms. My eyes felt itchy and my mouth was parched…. Reading a sand/desert book takes dedication but it was worth it. Focusing on themes of forgiveness and love- I couldn’t help but enjoy it! The romance was sweet and clean. Wasnt expecting a cliffhanger, so hoping there will be another book soon! Would recommend 😃

Do you want a fantasy story with tons of your favorite tropes, fast paced, full of action and intrigue, with a sweet romance but yet completely different from the usual plots that fantasy books have? Well then you NEED this story!

I think I kind of went into this book blind, in that it sounded interesting but if you had asked I don't think I would be able to tell you the premise. But it surpassed every expectation I could have had!

Let's start with the world building, imagine dystopian fantasy and these people live on a plateau surrounded by a dangerous sea of SAND! Yes, that's right, sand! Sorry but to me that was so fun, unusual, and surprising, especially since an ocean of water is scary and almost mythical to them. But anyways I loved the world the author created, It's unexpected and she did a wonderful job describing everything so I could imagine what it all would look like. The characters also have sand gifts, and it is very cool to explore a never before seen magic in fantasy, at least for me anyways. And I don't even feel like the gifts were what you would think when you hear sand magic, there are multiple types each with their own unique abilities and uses, and the way they work and what makes them weak is unusual but fit in the plot so well, so it was amazing! And the government system is really well done too, it explains social expectations, what everyone's role is, there is a board who makes the law and enforces it, and everything in between. Nothing is confusing but thoroughly dived into without being overwhelming or boring.

I really enjoyed the pacing of this story, it was fast and things were constantly happening, it was just one thing after another. But it didn't feel rushed, you know? So like in the beginning you get to meet the characters, the world they live in is explained and then some backstory. But you also learn more as you read so it's not an overload of information. But very quickly it picks up and doesn't let up from there, which is my favorite kind of book;) There is loads of action, adventure, danger, war, kidnapping, trust there is never a dull moment. But along with that there is super sweet moments of friendship, family, and finding love. As well as character growth that is beautiful and perfect, betrayal and forgiveness, and truths uncovered. Honestly there is a bit of everything and it was great!

The FMC, Norah is the outcast, the one who never felt like she fits in. All she wants is to find her purpose, help her people, and to feel loved. Her story is sad, but she is strong, caring, loves everyone around her, and is incredibly smart. Nothing goes her way but she fights every step of the way and never gives up. I loved her and how she grows, when she learns the truth about her past it'd be easy for her to harden from it she instead softens. She defies all expectations and limits, overcoming obstacles and uncovers secrets and reveals the truth for everyone.

The MMC, Zadock is shackled by his father's expectations because of his social standing, but wishes to do what he loves. He is also one of the strongest in their village which puts a lot of pressure on him. He wants to change things and invent but is afraid they won't accept his ideas. But he also cares for his people a lot, enough to sacrifice himself and do whatever it takes to save them. He is loving though he shouldn't be, a fighter, brave, creative, and doesn't give up.

There is another POV but I don't want to get into that as I feel like it was a small plot twist I don't want to spoil. But I really loved it, it was interesting, a great side to get to read from, and includes a side romance which was so sweet and healing for them.

Now about Zadock and Norah's relationship, I loved their friends-to-more journey! Full of forbidden love, the odds stacked against them, banter, history, true love, and cuteness. They are literally the best and it was so fun to read!

I doubt this review is doing this book justice....but if you take anything away take this, YOU NEED THIS BOOK IN YOUR LIFE! :)

Content: No-spice, no swearing, death/mass murder(non-descriptive), past death of a loved one.

This was one of those books not on my radar that now has quickly become a new favorite. What a fantastic young adult fantasy book that gave me all the things I love.

I thought the world was very interesting. I loved the sand concept and the different groups of people mixed with beliefs and how the sand worked for everyone. It was intriguing and while predictably unfolded, still kept my attention and was just a solidly good read.

The romance is sweet, I wish I had gotten a tiny bit more tension or angst from them, but it was really heartfelt. And I’m curious where things will go in book two??

I also loved the three POV’s. They all provided unique angles and seeing the good vs. the misunderstood really shaped the story telling overall. I will absolutely be recommending this one and look forward to the continuation.

Overall audience notes:
- YA Fantasy
- Language: none
- Romance: kisses
- Violence: moderate

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy from the Author. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.Oceans of Sand by Jessica Flory is centered around two people trying to make the world right again.
Can Norah and Zadock find the legendary moonstone?
Norah Saranyi
Norah Saranyi lives in a world where you are born with a sand gift that helps out their village. Along with that gift, no one can love as love weakens the sand gift. Norah is led to believe that she has no sand gift because none of the other ways work out for her. Norah has secretly loved people for years, but that hasn't been helping. See, Norah's world has been experiencing a famine for three years.

One of the things that I like about her is how stubborn she is about anything she thinks is right. Another thing I like about her is how she wants to do what's best for the people in her village even though no one there cares much about her because she doesn't have a gift. Except for a select few people, and they have no way to help her figure out what she is. Maybe this legendary moonstone will help figure out what her sand gift is?
Zadock Penvaren
Zadock Penvaren is the strongest Shaker in their village, so he was tasked to help Norah find this stone. His life was much different than Norah's, but he is still her best friend. Zadock grows into who he is once they get away from the village and where his father, potah, can influence him. Once he is put back under his influence, Zadock tries to please them even if that isn't what he or Norah wants to happen.

These two are very cute together. I love how they try to stay away from each other, but obviously, that doesn't work out for them. These two make a great couple.
The Story
Norah and Zadock's story is both an adventure and a love story. The Adventure because they have a quest to complete and a forbidden love story between the two of them.

Each person born is born with a special sand gift, which usually helps the village out in whatever way their gift can do. They are Shakers - people who can help move ships but also move sand to work well in battle, Absorbers - people who can heal their wounded, Extractors - people who can use the sand to help themselves out or to help out in battle as they use primarily spears, and then lastly they have Forgers - these people can make quartz material or even glass if they are strong enough for that. Everyone in each village has one of these gifts but Norah, which is odd.

For three years, the world has been going through a famine, and somehow Norah and Zadock think bringing back the second moonstone will fix everything. It does, but now something is amiss, and it's up to Norah to figure it out.
Five Stars
Oceans of Sand by Jessica Flory is a wonderfully written fantastical world. I can't wait to jump back in it with the second book when it arrives. Ms. Flory is a great writer; I know this book will find a great audience. Norah and Zadock's story is fantastic, and I love their sand gifts. I am giving Oceans of Sand by Jessica Flory five star rating, and I am encouraging and recommending everyone to buy a copy of the book as it is that wonderful.

Thank you for dropping by! I hope you enjoyed this review of Oceans of Sand by Jessica Flory.

Wow! This book was fantastic!!! I was sucked in and invested by chapter 6, and couldn't put it down by chapter 8. I stayed up way too late finishing it!

The Plot:
Norah doesn't have a sand gift. In a world where you sail on the sand, and sand provides everything for the growth of society this is a bit of a problem.
Zadock is the strongest shaker in their city, but he has a weakness. He cares for Norah.
In a world where love weakens a sand gift their relationship cannot survive.
But is the world going to survive? There's been a 3 year famine and the To'Morat are out to wipe out plateaus and villages in an effort to gain their supplies to sustain their kingdom.
To'Rahn, Norah and Zadock's home is ripe for the picking.
Norah and Zadock embark on a desperate quest to save their people. Will they survive the challenges they face? Will they find a way to make peace and not war? Will their love strengthen or weaken them?

✍️The Writing: I loved how in the first few chapters you can emotionally connect with the characters. You feel their struggle with their affection for each other, with Norah and her sister, and how love just wants to rise in their hearts. The Dual POV really helps you love both Norah and Zadock. Zadock had my heart from the beginning and Norah soon snagged it quickly as well.
The suspense in this book was real, and so was the intensity of many of the moments. I could not put this book down! It drew me in right away and kept me reading chapter after chapter. The plot was amazingly thought out, and I loved that I couldn't predict everything.
I loved the character development and seeing the changes in many of the characters. It felt realistic, but also fanciful enough for a fantasy book. There is a very well written antagonist in this book. The development of that character was 👌👌
The magic system was unique and I thought it was such an interesting way to use sand. Granted it took me a while to stop thinking of the Anakin Skywalker meme every time I read the word sand, but I got use to it and the writing easily distracted me 😂.

💋The Romance: This is a clean fantasy romance book. The only expressions of physical affection included are a kiss or two. The romantic tension is real though. Your heart will be invested for sure in these characters and their love.

⭐Overall theme and message: Norah is different from everyone, yet she still tries to learn new things and find new strengths. I love that life lesson, that when we don't fit in, we should try and do something different and focus on our strengths not our weaknesses. I also love that the characters learn more about love in this book. Not just romantic love, but love of family.

Age Recommendation: I would recommend this book for someone ages 14+. There is quite a bit of battling and war happening in this book. Some of the scenes could be a bit intense for a younger audience.

⚠️Things to be aware of:
Because of the withholding of love built into the society some of the character's behaviors can come across as emotionally abusive.
There is death, war, and fighting in this book.

OCEANS OF SAND
by: Jessica Flory

-I give 4.5 stars!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

~Love weakens his magic, and survival is far from guaranteed…

-OCEANS OF SAND, is thrilling, fast-paced, intriguing story to jump right in and read. You see, it’s about one girl, her boat, and an ocean of sand to cross, while being caught in a crossfire between forbidden feelings, an unforgiving desert, and starving nations willing to do anything to survive. Her biggest wish is to have a sand power so she can feel she is a contributing part of the community and standing true despite obstacles along the way.

My friends, if you are a fan of fantasy filled with mystery, danger, secrets and love mixed in, then you will want to read this story asap.
Watching flawed and endearing characters come to discover the true meaning of sacrifice-and that love can heal the world was quite thrilling. I loved how this story was filled with dear messages of beautiful forgiveness, a fierce determination to help others, and the power of love. Through much heartache and danger, there was such strength in characters not giving up. This is a fantastic story with great world building, a roller coaster of adventure, deep character growth, fascinating sand magic and with a dose of romance worth reading! ✨🙌🏻📚❤️✨

“You, my wild girl, are perfect.”

•Content: Toxic parental relationship, magic, Death with blood, murders and raidings, character gets Slapped twice, attempted murder multiple times, fantasy violence, some blood, kissing (some make outs).

“Thank you.” I smile sideways at him, a real smile, unguarded. “For catching me.” Zadock smiles back.
“Always.”

•Shoutout to @swoony_reads_society for a great story picked for book club for the month of July!📚🥳✨

This book quickly sparked my interest with its unique world. There are so many fascinating concepts in this story. I was intrigued with the ocean of sand, the sand gifts and especially the forbidden love. It was easy to get immersed into this story. I loved following these characters on their perilous adventure. The plot was fast paced and unexpected. This story surprised me with its twist and turns.

I really enjoyed the theme of love in this story. In this world love is seen as a weakness and forbidden. But by the end, these characters will come to fully understand the supremacy of love.

This book has 3 POVs. The two main POVs were my favorite! The third POV was very interesting and I feel like this character has a lot of potential and I hope we get to see more growth in book 2!

I appreciated that this book stayed true to YA with its romance. It was sweet with just the right amount of angst and heartache. This is a book I will gladly hand to my kids in a few years. They currently think anything with romance is gross!

📖
🔥kissing, one scene with a female character changing and dressing a male character while he is unable to use his hands (very PG & nothing else happens), when kissing the male character puts his hand under the back of female’s shirt and touches the skin on her back.
🤬no language though the word “speck” is used and it seems to be a curse word in their world.

4.5 stars and a very entertaining and solid start to a new fantasy series! I was hooked within the first 20ish pages and it was fast paced from there.

Norah is a strong leading character and honestly Zadock is a co-lead and less of “just Norah’s love interest” and I love that. At first, I thought the ending was wrapped up a little too neatly, BUT that cliffhanger!?!? WHAT WAS THAT?

I recommend for anyone looking for an easy clean YA read with a unique magic system. I look forward to seeing how the author builds out this world.

If you enjoy high-stakes fantasy adventure with teenaged protagonists, Dune-like dystopian vibes, and forbidden love, then this book is for you! The world building is top notch, the romance between Norah and Zadok sizzles while still remaining a clean read, and the plot has enough twists to keep you guessing right up until the end. I listened to the excellent audiobook narrated by Chloe Bright and truly loved it. Oceans of Sand was a 2023 Reader's Favorite winner for YA epic fantasy—and it's a well-deserved accolade. Highly recommended!

This was a great book and I overall enjoyed the plot of it. It is a great book for anyone into adventure, fiction or romance. The one thing was that there were so many characters that it was hard to keep up with and some of the location names were similar so it all kinda blurred together. It wasn’t so good that I would reread it but I would recommend.😜

I adore this book. It has fun characters and a unique magic system. The world is very immersive and inventive.

The romance is sizzling sweet. There are so many fun moments between Norah and Zadock where the romantic tension is SO GOOD. Side characters who should also get a shout-out: Shrey and Motah, Norah’s family members, and, Lylahn, a girl from another tribe. Imwraeth is a great third POV character to round out the story.

This is a story of adventure and romance with strong themes of forgiveness, sacrifice, and the power of one. Great for anyone who likes light fantasy. Totally clean. It isn’t a fairytale retelling but gives a vibe like it could be while being fresh and unique.

Prepare to be completely immersed in Norah's desert world, living on a plateau and being the only villager without a sand gift. The challenging desert life is made harder because love and affection deludes the villagers sand gifts, and without them, no one will survive the harsh conditions that are declining rapidly.

Absolutely love sand worlds! This book reminded me of a mix between The 100 and Sand by Hugh Howey. But instead of sci-fi, the author added a fantasy twist. I loved how she created a magic system around the well-developed sand world. The characters were fun to read and relatable. And the ending was a wild ride, all the way until the last chapter!

5 Stars.

🏜️ The vibes:
- sand powers
- YA fantasy
- multi POV
- Closed door
- Themes of forgiveness

🐪 My thoughts:
In this YA fantasy, the premise is that there’s sand magic and love is frowned upon and discouraged because sand magic weakens and ultimately disappears when love is present. So what is Norah to do when she finds herself seeing her best friend Zadock - who is one of the strongest sand wielders) as so much more than just a friend?

🐪 I loved the sand magic. The four types of sand magic were so interesting to me. The world building wasn’t overwhelming but it was enough for me to feel like this was really well thought out. I loved the sweet feelings that Norah and Zadock started feeling around eachother. And that feeling of “they can’t be together and I’m super distressed and how are we going to find a solution here” was exactly the type of conflict/angst I enjoy.

🐪 When we hit a third POV- I was straight up shocked. Like oh hi. Who the heck are you? And that journey was totally unexpected but super interesting.

🐪 I think this book is very unique because I feel like it can be enjoyable for a wide age range. The main characters are 17 years old so I feel like the target audience is probably in that age range. However, I am in my 30s and I really enjoyed this book also. It did feel young in certain points, but it felt refreshing to read something different that was super wholesome in content and in the main plot themes. The themes are so wholesome in fact, that I would (and do) compare it to a Disney animation family movie type of vibe.

🐪 Ok. This will sound wild but hear me out. Two movies this book reminded me of was Moana and Encanto. It’s very hard to explain why but bear with me. The idea of the land dying and needing to leave to find salvation…. It reminded me of Moana several times- going on an epic journey to save your land and people. Also Encanto because everyone has powers/gifts but Maribel (as is the case with Norah). Finding self worth when others don’t see it- a huge theme in both Encanto and in this book. Now nobody come sue me for todays wildddddd similar connections. 😂🙈

I love being a member of the Swoony Reads Book Club because I get introduced to books that aren’t on my radar or books that I wouldn’t normally be drawn to—books that I end up loving! Our July pick, made by the lovely add name and handle, was Oceans of Sand, a YA fantasy, by Jessica Flory. I don’t read a ton of YA books or fantasy books, so I was excited to check out this book. Well, I ended up loving it.

I adored both Norah and Zaddock. Their friendship was so strong and so pure. My heart ached for them as they had to hide their true feelings for each other. I loved how both Norah and Zaddock grew individually and together throughout the story. Their relationship was so beautiful.

The world building was phenomenal. From the vivid images of the oceans of sand to the sand gifts magic system to a world without love, the written words swept me into the story and hooked me from the start. I loved seeing how Norah and Zaddock handled all the challenges and blessings of their world.

Flory did an amazing job balancing the adventure and intrigue of the story with the deeper messages of love and sacrifice. It was beautifully written. The romance was so sweet and added so much to the deeper messages. I was rooting for Norah and Zaddock from the beginning.

I am so glad I read this book. It was so good, and I can’t wait to read the next book in the duology.

I was very impressed that this was the authors debut novel. I feel like I connected with many characters, felt lots of emotions, and was very interested in the world the author created. She did a great job world building without it ever being boring. I loved the setting and the magic system! I found it all really unique. The role the moon played on the gravity of the planet was so cool. I loved all three POVs and the many villains present in the book. I was very invested in the two romances. I enjoyed the role love and forgiveness and mercy played in the book. I like the engineering ideas and not relying too much on the magic. I like the thoughts the author presented of where does actual strength come from? And what attributes really make for a good leader? Read this book for adventure, epic magic, romance, politics, and a cool setting. I appreciated the cleanliness of the romance and language.

SPOILERS and book notes:
I like that Norah and ZAdock have been bffs there whole lives but only recently has she been seeing him romantically. Zadocks power is to shake the sand. I love the world. An ocean of sand. And villages are built on different plateaus. But the sand has a sucking quality and Norah’s dad fell in and got sucked underneath. Sand storms!! How scary!! They kill if you care caught in them. The weather wardens can normally predict them so people can be inside. But they are caught unaware on the sand ocean! And love weakens the sand gift???? What the crap that is so sad. And zadocks was weakening so we know he loves Norah… there are 4 abilities with sand: Shakers can move the sand. Forgers can turn the sand into quartz or crystal. Absorbers can absorb the sands energy and heal with it. (Most rare. And then Extracting: they take energy from the sand that makes the stronger and faster. most houses are made of quarts. Moon is out 2weeks a month. And when it is, sand floats and steps bounce bc of the gravity pull of the moon. The sand is burning hot and only fire ants can walk on it and survive. There are creepy scorpions that have deadly stings too. The students practice sparing and honing battle skills with their abilities bc they might be attacked from other villages bc of the famine. Ugh it’s so sad that love makes people weak. People need love!!! So then bc of this the council just chooses your partner so there isn’t love. And then there can be strong sand people to defend the village. They pair strong sand people together to keep the sand gift strong. Imwraeth is a third POV from the conquering tribe To’Morat. He is an extractor that has a heart condition. If he didn’t extract energy from the sand he would die. They are pillaging and conquering plateaus to survive. I like that zadock is a want to be engineer and try to make inventions that lets the people rely not so heavily on the sand powers. Holy cheese wiz i did not think I would be crying in this book. Zadock gets anointed with another chick and Norah gets anointed with NO ONE. She doesn’t want to be anointed to anyone but zadock anyways though. Ugh they are star crossed (or forbidden) lovers now. Not just friends to lovers. Bc Zadocks dad won’t let them be friends anymore now that he is anointed to lame other chick. But now they are an adventure to get the moon stone on a small boat sleeping on one pallet. Hehe and she has to help him change and they have to cuddle for warmth… and they can’t love or ZAdock can’t use his sand powers!! What is happening??!! Norah is captured and learns she is a Sustainer. A fifth sand gift that had been lost until now. It keeps plants alive in the desert. It keeps unpredictable storms from happening. Imraeth is such an interesting character. Naive and not strong. Kind of selfish… but he is falling for this captive healer that is supposed to heal his heart condition…. He murdered her whole town. I don’t know how to feel about him. I like that zadoch uses engineering to save Norah. He doesn’t just rely on his shaking to solve everything. Work smarter not harder!!! Norah thinks that ZAdock is dead. And runs himself ragged just to get back to her. And their reunion is EVERYTHING. ““DON’T TOUCH HER!” What? I freeze. That was… It couldn’t be…” ““You’re alive?” I breathe. Tears pour down my cheeks. I drop the spear and run to him. I throw my arms around him and sob into his neck. He smells so good, feels so warm. He puts his arms around me and holds me tight, and I wish this moment could never end.” I love zadocks nickname “Wildgirl” for Norah. And then when he tells her he loves her and they kiss!! And plants grow!!! AWwww. With two moon stones now love makes the sand gifts more powerful. And I love that FORGIVENESS is a big part of feeling love. To feel complete love, you can’t hold grudges and not forgive. Ya know? I love that Imraeth is powerful leader even with his heart defect. He and Lylahn kiss. Power couple. Awww Nora and zadock get annointed and have so many cute kissy moments as they travel from plateaus helping with plants. He is an engineer now too. Good satisfying conclusion but also now people across the ocean coming to take Norah?!? I love the idea that strength does NOT come from the absence of emotions such as love and peace and forgiveness. It does NOT come from being physically perfect. You can have strength even with a physical handicap (Imraeth) bc his strength comes from love and loyalty to his people. To making choices as a leader that make his people better. And Nora and zadocks strength come from love and sacrifice and forgiveness and mercy! The world does not put that much merit into these attributes. They are very underrated with their impact on a good society.

I was pleasantly drawn into this beautiful fantasy! I loved the cover and knew this would be one I needed to read more about! @jessicafloryauthor really packed a punch with her debut novel!

I haven’t read a fantasy in while so I was so ready to dive in to this world of sand and all it’s powers!! I found all the different sand gifts fascinating! The author was very descriptive with the gifts and the way they are used!

I loved Norah and Zadock!! They were a dynamic duo! I felt for Norah throughout the whole book! She was the only one who didn’t have a sand gift and she was sort of an outcast bc of it. But she was still determined to learn how to protect her family and people! I loved her determination! Zadock was the absolute sweetest hero! Every girl needs a Zadock!! They were childhood best friends and shared a secret love for each other. Zadock was the strongest “Shaker”( one of the sand gifts) and there was one thing that made your gift weaken… Love.

So when they are sent on a mission to find the second moonstone to help save their people and restore peace among all the lands, things get interesting. As they cross the dangerous ocean of sand they are faced with dangers of all kinds! And it was a action-packed ride that kept me on the edge of my seat!!

I loved the additional characters! Imwraeth was such a complex character and I loved watching his transformation throughout the story! His storyline was written so well!! I loved the sisterly bond between Lylahn and Kaera. They go though so much heartache, but we’re strong and never gave up, no matter the danger they were in!

The fight scenes were so interesting and had me turning the pages to see what would happen next! You will loathe the bad guys and root so hard for the good ones!

Things I loved:
🩵Multiple POV
🩵Friends to lovers
🩵Also enemies to lovers! 😉
🩵Adventure
🩵Danger
🩵”Wild girl” 🫠🥰🥹
🩵The rainstorm 😍😉🔥
🩵Mystery
🩵Sand powers
🩵The kiss🔥🔥
🩵All the plot twists!!

If you love a fantasy filled with mystery, danger, secrets and love mixed in, then read this asap!!!

Thank you to the author for letting me have an arc copy! All thoughts and opinions are my own!

This YA fantasy was fun for the whole family! The world building was incredible and the story was engaging. The characters were relatable. The lessons of love and forgiveness were powerful.

Told from multiple points of view.

Expect;
- Friend to more YA romance (MMC & FMC)
- Forbidden love (in so many ways)
- One bed
- Forced proximity (one small boat)
- Enemies to more (side character romance)
- Chosen one
- Coming of age
- Happy ending

- epilogue leads into Book 2

Intimacy: Kisses only (A female friend has to help a male friend dress but averts her eyes, clothed male & clothed female share a bed - only sleeping & snuggling happens).

- No profanity

PG violence:
Nations are at war and there are casualties and fatalities. Prisoners are executed including women and children. Homes are burned. Assassination attempts on a ruler’s life. Talk of sacrificing one character to save others. Fighting with sand powers and spears. People with defects cast off the plateaus to their deaths.

Content:
Grief over death of loved ones. Mother drinking tea to prevent pregnancy, Heart defect. Death of characters who fall into the sea of sand. Sand creatures (including a giant scorpion).

Religion: The characters in the book worship a moon goddess. Based on the book it seems she is real in their world (not an idol) and that she actually has powers and directs her people toward goodness. The prequel portrays her as a loving and benevolent force of goodness in opposition to a real force of darkness.

NOTE: In the book, love weakens characters’ powers so people choose not to be loving, even towards their own family members and may even give up their children to avoid loving them. However, the book ultimately shows the power of love and forgiveness to heal.

PS. The Prequel novella (The God Heist) to this book is absolutely incredible. It isn’t necessary to understand the book, but I loved having the background and history- so I highly recommend it. It was a fantastic story!

Norah is the only one in her village with no sand gift but she was asked to go look for the legendary moonstone with her best friend and the most powerful sand shaker in their village, Zaddock. Despite their feelings for each other, they knew they can’t voice it because love will weakens the power of sand gift. During their mission to get the moonstone that claimed can save their world, Norah was kidnapped and that’s when she knew her real gift.

Wow. That was my first word when I finished this book. I never thought to finish it in one sitting. It was so good so intense and ugh I just love the second half of their adventure. The first half of the book mostly about Norah’s life at home, school where people treat her like she’s not normal and I felt her and at one point she’s became so relatable to me. She’s one of the best FMC with her character that never gives up and always wanted to help the others even though she had no power or gift. I love her relationship with her little sister and they always make me cry everytime they say love to each other 😭 and then Zaddock, I like his determination to find her after he found the moonstone. Their chemistry is absolutely amazing!

The supporting characters, Imwraeth and Lylahn are the additional ones I never thought would be so good in a story. The fighting scene had me edge on my seat and when I’m about to be happy with the ending, the epilogue erased my happiness because man, there’s no way I’d be able sit down after that ending. Aahhhh I need book two asap! I would recommend this book in a heartbeat to everyone who loves fantasy!

Fantastic audiobook!

Partial review:
Must read!

This story was so great! I have never been a fan of desert settings. I think they are fun to visit in a fantasy book, but I gravitate more toward lush greenery. This book completely changed that for me! This world is so interesting! I love that villages live on huge desert plataues and they travel with sand surfing boats! That the ocean is a far off scary place to people who have only ever known sand. It's a different, refreshing story.

Also, does anyone love atla? Love the idea of sand bending? The entire magic system is sand based, and it's epic! The amount of things that Jessica came up with that sand can accomplish is mind-boggling! Fan-freaking-tastic!

Oceans of Sand is a romantasy that's super clean content wise. Do you love Kiera Cass' characters and style of writing emotional depth? Then you have to read Jessica Flory's writing (which may be better) In this story marriages are arranged by the government, think matched meets the giver, with our two main characters being childhood best friends. Who are star crossed lovers that can never be together, but when her mother gives them an epic quest to save the world that may all change.

Oceans of Sand is ultimately a story of forgiveness and redemption. Love conquers all and strength is not as important as it seems. With a character with a chronic health condition learns they aren't broken and don't need to be fixed. That part really touched me.

Jessica Flory’s new book Oceans of Sand is an interesting one. It contains themes of love and forgiveness in a culture where not expressing love is the status quo. One of the things I loved about the book was that the younger generation saw the problems with their society and looked for ways to make changes. The book does have a surprise ending which leads me to believe a book 2 may be coming.
There are a couple potential areas of concern for some audiences. The characters regularly use what could be considered expletives - using the name of their God more like a swear word than in reverence. There is also a section in the book where a male and a female character are sent off on a journey together (alone). During that journey both characters become wet in a storm and need to change clothes. Because the male character needs to use his hands (and focus) to keep their boat from faltering, the female undresses the male and puts dry clothes on him. While nothing happens between the two characters, some may feel this behavior is inappropriate.
While the book is very well-written and enjoyable, I’m not sure I would place the book in a K-12 Christian school library. Librarians can always read the book for themselves and form their own opinion.
I received a complimentary copy of the book. This is my honest review.

Wowza, what a brilliantly written debut novel! I’m not a big fantasy reader, but as soon as I read the description of this book I was so intrigued and knew I just had to read it! And I am so glad I did!
The world building in this book is phenomenal, and the author described the setting so brilliantly that I could totally picture the story world in my mind!
Oceans of Sand is told in first person POV (my personal favorite!) from the perspective of three different characters. I loved Norah and Zadock, and I was surprised that I quickly came to love Imwraeth as well. This author did a wonderful job of crafting protagonists you will love, and villains you will detest.
I also loved the sweet, slow-burn, friends-to-lovers romance in this book.
I also found the different sand gifts to be absolutely fascinating to read about!
Oceans of Sand is an enthralling and unputdownable read, and I enjoyed every minute of it! Though, I must say that cliffhanger ending threw me for a loop and I NEED the next book ASAP!
I most highly recommend Oceans of Sand! If you like no spice YA fantasy you will love this book.

Note: this book features battle violence, and the characters worship a moon goddess.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author.
My review was not influenced in any way. All thoughts and opinions are one hundred percent my own

Oceans of Sand
Despite the only woman being without a sand gift, Norah is sent on a quest with her best friend Zadock to look for the second moonstone which could end the famine plaguing their land. While alone their secret feelings for each other rise to the surface and if they act on their love, Zadock could lose his sand gift. The two of them face villains and an unforgiving desert, giant scorpions and sandstorms and warring nations and they both realize that love is the greatest power of all not weakness. Oceans of Sand, is out now. If you enjoy fantasy it’s definitely worth picking up.

Pros & Cons
I love the world building and the different sand gifts. It’s different than a lot of fantasy young adult or adult that’s out these days. My favorite character of course was Norah. She’d do anything for those she loves. I also enjoy the fact that the theme is that love is strength not weakness. The epilogue left for a sequel. I would have preferred that it stayed with just Norah and Zadock’s point of view. The third point of view from The Favored One, I felt was basically a bad guy who didn’t want to be a bad guy and couldn’t take control.

Overall
Overall I liked it. If you’re in the mood for a fantasy check out Oceans of Sand which is available now.

There are books you read...and then there are books that keep you up all night until you can finish them. This is one of those that I stayed up way too late because I could not put it down!

Jessica nailed it with her debut novel! The world she created, the magic that sustains it, and the characters we follow are all just amazing! I never once thought to myself "this can't be real" because everything was described so well that I was just there along the characters on this adventure of a lifetime with them.

Norah is such a beautiful character with such strength and resilience. I love the friendship between her and Zodock! They are so sweet with each other and I love that they have such a great camaraderie and devotion to each other outside of the feeling that emerge as you read the book. Zodock is such a protective hero who absolutely wants to keep Norah safe at all costs. I loved seeing him do all he can to make sure Norah is going to be happy and cherished.

I loved that this book takes you on a an adventure across oceans of sand where Zodock and Norah not only have to find themselves and what direction their lives should go, but also save their entire world. No pressure right?

Seriously if you are looking for the perfect romantic fantasy adventure give this one a go! Her world she created is like none other I have read before and I enjoyed every single minute immensely. This is one where you will definitely already be counting down to book 2 like I am!
