I've stopped panicking now. Not because I'm not scared. I just know panicking won't help the situation. It'll only serve to make it worse. Need to try and remain calm for as long as possible. Control my breathing. Save my oxygen. I breathed in and coughed. The air in here is stale. I hope I'm not in here for long. Please, dad. Don't let me be here for long. Please. I started to cry. Helpless.

The day after his 21st Birthday Party, Todd woke to find himself trapped in a box with nothing but broken memories for company. Told through his eyes, live his fear and feel his claustrophobia as he frantically tries to peace together what happened, who buried him and why in Matt Shaw's new horror novella.
MATT SHAW was born, quite by accident (his mother tripped, he shot out) September 30th 1980 in Winchester hospital where he was immediately placed on the baby ward and EBay. Some twelve years later (wandering the corridors of the hospital and playing with road kill when he was on day release), the listing closed and he remained unsold, he was booted out of the hospital to start his life as a writer and hobbit – beginning with writing screenplays and short stories for his own amusement before finally getting published when he was twenty-seven years and forty-five seconds old.
Once Published weekly in a lad's magazine with his photography work, Matt Shaw is also a published author and cartoonist. Has to be said, can be a bit of a flirt and definitely, without a shadow of a doubt, somewhat of a klutz.
Favourite books "Roald Dahl's Collection of Short Stories" Tim Burton's Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy Anything, really, written by himself. Because he is that good.
This book will leave your mind spinning, trying to figure out what is real and what is a broken memory. A life to let go of after a sorrow to gard to heal from.
"Would my family betray me? Am I worthy enough to be saved? I don't want to die now."
Todd 's living but he isn't. How can he survive the choices he has made? To make sense of a family tragedy, he must first fight his way out the heaviness of life that is burring him alive.
Matt Shaw takes your mind on a roller coaster ride and will leave you grasping at each page. EPIC psychological master piece.
Would my family betray me? Am I worthy enough to be saved? I am scared. Is this really the end of me? But I don't want to die now. These are the questions that kept playing on Todd's mind. His disorientated mind made him question his parent's love for him and his sister's loyalty to him. He regrets the things he didn't do enough to be loved and cherished by them when he was free and able.
As he lay confined in his small restrictive box he tried to piece together why he is trapped here. His memories was fragmented and poisoned by wild hallucinations which only thickens the longer he stays in the box. What is true and what is merely his cruel mind playing games with him? Even so, Todd cherished these broken memories however twisted they are as they are his sole companion to get his mind off his suffocating situation.
What I Liked The author did a great job with the flashbacks. The flashbacks was infused with twisted hallucinations which projects the protagonist's helplessness and the his claustrophobic experience really well. So well that I started having morbid thoughts myself: like keeping a sharp tool hidden on my body just in case what happened to Todd happened to me. This book gives me cold sweat as I do have phobia of being buried alive. Such a sick way to go you know. Worst possible way really. I was all jittery even before I started reading it. I am hopeless I know.
Was I Spooked? Maybe it's because of me having high expectation before reading it and I was fully expecting to be incapacitated by fear after reading it, which is why I was pretty surprised that this isn't the case for me at all. I am not saying that I wasn't the least affected by the sufferings of the poor guy crammed into a small box. I am, hence the earlier morbid thoughts. It could be that it was told in first person's view and the environment wasn't detailed enough to rub more of the fear factor in or something.
Overview In terms of plotting, this book nailed it. It kept me speculating throughout the story and I am glad to say I kept getting it wrong. Now that's a good thing especially when it comes to story with a mystery to solve. I also love all the mindfuckings this book dealt me and it is a good read that kept me turning the pages. I just expect a little more on the fear factor. So this is more like a 3.8 rounded up to 4 stars for me.
About the Ending and in Answer to Author's Note I am much relieved the author didn't go with his initial idea of having a silly ending. The current ending was a good pick as it brought a whole new meaning to the story and includes some moral values as well. I liked the twist where..
Yes I liked the current ending although I don't mind...
Knowing a curious cat like me, I couldn't say no to these wicked films and will absolutely be watching them slowly. I know that this wouldn't be a good idea to dispel my fear of live burials, I just can't stop myself from wanting to know more. >_<;
I am reading this book because of this image and its blurb.... The image disturbed me a lot. Yet I couldn't help but to find it mesmerizingly beautiful.

OMFG this book was totally an epic read from start to finish it had me thinking up reasons for these things where happening. and I was not disappointed when i found out the reason at the end
I'll recommend this to anyone who loves a mindfuck (pardon me) or a book that has you scratching your head while trying to breath.
5 stars is not enough and this will make it into my top 5 reads of this year for sure.
Absolutely mind blowing, head spinning novella by Matt Shaw. A master class psychological horror thriller to read. For me it came out for surprise. It's take me quite a while to understand the main theme of it but while reading the end it got all cleared...
It's Todd's 21st birthday by waking up he find himself buried in a box. Bewildered and couldn't grasp the situation he became hectic. He also hallucinate his sister Kayla in there and lot of things or his past life that some of those are he maybe wants to regret. I actually liked the character that portrait Todd's sister Kayla. But the ending of her to me I find it heartbreaking. Didn't see that coming, at least I thought Kayla would made through the end too...
The bottom fact about this tale is that it will certainly make you feel dizzy. As for me I just couldn't help myself but continue my reading till the last page. I felt like I was experiencing the same fate as if it's happening with me too, in Live telecast event. Must read book from the author who knows how to play with human mind gradually but more accurately. Heck of a read that was...
No one likes the idea of being buried alive. Sweating, suffering, losing breath in a small, confined space. A terrifying prospect which is ripe for horror scribes everywhere. Surprisingly, I don't know any author who's attempted it. It works better as a visual plot (see Buried starring Ryan Reynolds or CSI) but in the right hands, it could work as a novel or novella too. Step forward Matt Shaw...we know this guy is diverse, maybe he can pull it off? And he does...sort of.
Todd is a rich kid. Turning twenty-one, he gets a car and is the envy of his little sister, Kayla. Then, he's kidnapped. Told in skewed flashback, where good memories and bad memories intermingle, it's not always clear what is going on. Was Kayla kidnapped before him? Who took him? Will he parents pay the ransom? Questions that dominate Todd as he becomes adjusted to his new, confined home.
The story, from the outset, is claustrophobic. As per the author notes, Matt Shaw intentionally created a jumbled story to give a sense of confinement, a brain going crazy at the prospect of death. Todd is a damaged kid, who feels his sister is the favourite. Naturally, he doubts his father will pay his ransom or even rescue him at all. This breeds doubt in Todd's head and confuses his mind, his memories not always as clear as crystal. The author does this excellently, always goading you with a red herring before relinquishing the truth. As the story rolls on, you're not entirely sure what is happening. Not to ruin the story, but I doubt you will see the ending coming. This is why I said sort of...this ending could have benefited from a little more build. The story was short, excellent too, but it could have been a little longer. I felt it came on suddenly...but then, that's just me.
5* - This was a four star effort for me. However, I had time to think about it and the more I did, the better the story became, hence a 5* review. Anyone trapped in a box would...well, we don't know how they would react. Unpredictable is the best bet and Shaw has produced that here; a story that's unflinching, edgy, terrifying and emotionally wrenching all at the same time. You don't always know what's happening, but stick with it until the end and you shall be rewarded. Buried is confining and short, brutal and sharp, but it doesn't let you down. Another great short from Matt Shaw.
Matt Shaw has the ability to take you along to places where you probably do not want to go, but can't help yourself from following. This author has depth, much more than most people will give him credit for if they only read about how sick his stories are. Add to that the fact that he is a damn good writer, and you are in for a truly scary ride.
And, just as a personal little side note, I had to look up Taphophobia when I encountered it in the story. I was surprised to see it described as an irrational fear of being buried alive. Really?? In my humble opinion, if you think the fear of being buried alive is irrational, you have bigger problems than I can help you with...
Yeah, yeah, yeah, know what they meant, it's just fun to be a wise-ass every now and then...
Intense. That one word sums up buried for me, intense. In this short horror story Todd wakes up the day after his 21st birthday to find himself buried alive. Believing he has been kidnapped we see into the mind of a person forced into the worst possible situation.
His parents are rich they will pay? Of course they will - right?
The book is a claustrophobic journey into his insecurities and reveals much about the human condition. Haunted by hallucinations as the air starts to get low, you will feel yourself there experiencing the horror and dismay right along with him. This is a short book but it packs a big punch and the ending is not as expected.
5 Stars! ★★★★★ Matt Shaw, you did it again! This psychological thriller had me on the edge of my seat. I loved the way the story switched between Todd being trapped in a box, to memories from this past. Almost as if he’s slowly losing his mind, he replays old events and really delves deep into what happened that night. Who kidnapped him, where he is and how these events unfolded?
I didn’t know I was holding my breath until the last word of the last sentence. There was no gore like in Matt Shaw’s other book, but pure thrills and chills. Wow!
Another great story by Matt Shaw. I think he can write anything he chooses.
This is about Todd, who is trapped in a box. He is having many memories and discovering many things. He wonders if he will survive, if his parents will save him. All the things you would do and think if facing death.
This book will make you feel confined, unable to breathe at times, and will make you hope to never be in that position.
This short novella takes around an hour to read. Keeping that in mind, I'm going to try to keep the review short too. Buried is meant to be a horror, and even a psychological horror. Its main theme is the claustrophobia that Todd faces, something that the readers are expected to associate with.
What's good about the book is that it moves really fast. You don't really feel the need to even take a break from it and can read it in one sitting. The second good thing is that it has this surreal dreamlike execution which gives off an uneasy, creepy vibe that has a lot of potential (although that remains highly unrealized). The third good thing is the few twists that the story contains - interesting, not very expected, and quite well presented. Fourth good thing - you can associate with some (not all) characters and even feel for them.
What's bad about the book is that it does not really fulfill its aim of being a horror or psychological horror - it's just not disturbing enough. Second bad thing - the claustrophobia was not really easy to associate with, and that's coming from someone who actually has a touch of the phobia. The discomfort that Shaw intended for his readers to experience just did not materialize. The third bad thing was that it wasn't a very well written book. Tense errors were abundant and that's a real problem when you've already got a book that's leaping from scene to scene every few sentences. Lastly, the story was interesting enough but its execution was just too blasé to do justice to the genre.
Should you read Buried? Sure, if you: - need something to pass the time on the commute home - need something to read as you wait for your appointment with the doctor/dentist - need something to read while waiting for a flight
Do you absolutely have to read Buried? Nope. It's one of those books that tries hard to be dark, but fails because it's barely disturbing, making it completely passable.
I have to say Matt you surprised me with this one. I thought it was in depth with a bit of trickery, reminiscent of a certain author I won't name names begins with K and ends with G. Well crafted and thoughtful.
I couldn't breathe! Was literally holding my breath as I read!
Another psychological thriller from Matt Shaw. Can this man not write anything that doesn't suck the reader in right from the beginning until the very end?!?! Shaw creates through words an atmosphere of actually being enclosed in a box under the ground. While reading the story, I could literally feel my body tending up! Todd and Kayla are loving, supportive siblings to each other through the story. Their fun loving banter between them is true to my brother and I as well as the protective instinct. Being in a family with just two kids a boy and girl, this story also tugged at my heart and brought flashback memories of my brother and I. Shaw once again writes a horrifying tale that draws the reader into the story making them feel as if they are a silent character in the book watching it all deliciously unfold.
This is the story of Todd. On his 21st birthday he wakes up trapped in a box, about to be (he thinks) buried alive. With only his fractured memories for company, he must try to work out how he got into the situation and why.
Once again Matt delivers. I have got to know his style quite well now, and this was a little bit different in that it had a happy ending of sorts. Well, a 'Matt' style happy ending at least! The journey to get there though was vintage 'Matt'! Blistering, dark, claustrophobic and ultimately very sad. A quick read, but a read that is best read in one hit as it is unputdownable! I love Matt's work and eagerly look forward to each new release, and once again he has not disappointed. Keep them coming Matt - your fan base is growing!
This is the kind of book you have really high hopes for and then something happens and it all turns to shit. Luckily this is a solid, tense read that slowly builds the tension, and you feel as if you're right there in the box with Todd.
This is quite short but it's effective and if it were longer it wouldn't pack the same punch that it does at 93 pages. Shaw has written a terrifying novel that truly meses with your head and even after I read I couldn't believe what I had just read.
It starts off strong and never lets up. You know a story is good when you finish and you're pissed off because you finished it. This is my kind of horror novel. A cerebral novella that sinks in with the force of a sledgehammer.
This is a short book but it packs a mighty punch. The set-up is that the lead character is trapped in a box and we don't know why. As the story unfolds, we are given clues and snippets from his family life. We don't know what is real and what is not and the effect is suitably disorientating. I will not say much as there are twists and turns and the ending is a satisfying one. It is best to read this book with as little knowledge of the content as possible. Be warned, if you're claustophobic, you will feel uncomfortable! A great read that will keep you turning the pages.
I really liked how this short story played out. The author did a nice job of relaying the confusion of being in a small box and not knowing how one arrived there while also showing the desire to get back to normal life. While reading it my mind was contemplating the possible outcomes, and even though I came up with many, I was wrong on all counts. lol
Claustrophobians beware! This story will make you shiver and need fresh air and open skies. Full of mind-boggling twists and terrifying turns, Matt Shaw has delivered a fantastic trip through one of the most base fears almost everyone has, close spaces. I only wish it were longer, no detriment to the material or author. It's just that damn good. I'll for sure be reading more from Master Shaw.
Wow! First of all just the idea of being trapped in a box like the main character in this story is just so completely and utterly terrifying. I absolutely loved this story from start to finish. The ending was so unexpected and surprising. I don't want to ruin it for anyone else so I'll just say it's amazing. Read this book!
If you suffer from claustrophobia then make sure you got some company with you when read this. It's excellent
This review was written before I started to take my reviewing seriously. I would need to re-read the book to give it a serious and fair review so the above review was what I posted at the time.
Clever man, Mr Shaw is. This book had me enthralled from start to finish, playing with my feelings at every turn. I, as usual with Shaw's books, was completely blind sided by the ending; though this ending isn't the usual type of conclusion that he usually punches me in the brain with. Well done, my good man.
